The Answer:
“What?!” Kagome asked incredulously.
“Well its rather simple dear, wish for the well to stay open. It would use the wish and keep the well open. Then you don't have to choose,” Mrs. Higurashi sat back and smiled.
`Can I do that?' She stared at her mother in amazement at the simple plan her mother presented her.
“Well quit looking at me as if I've grown another head; go see if you can make it work!” Mrs. Higurashi waved her hand at her eldest and stood up to rinse the tea cups. Without a backwards glance, Kagome sprang to her feet and headed towards the door.
“Thanks, mama! You're the best,” she called over her shoulder as the screen door slammed shut behind her. Kagome ran to the well house at full tilt and sprang into the time opening without a second thought. Pink light engulfed her body and just as suddenly, receded.

“You can come out now, Inuyasha,” Kaede said as she continued her gardening. With a grumble and a few muffled curses, the hanyou dropped out of his tree.
“What the hell do you mean `I finally made a good choice'?” Inuyasha demanded of the elder miko.
“Inuyasha,” Kaede said planting her hands on her hips, “if you can not see what that girl had done for you, you are hopeless.”
“What the hell are you talking about, old woman,” he growled.
“That girl has done what not many others would do. She has accepted you for what you are and while I fail to see what she would possibly love about someone as rude and uncouth as yourself, she apparently does,” Kaede stated. Her aura flashed as she wagged her finger at the irate hanyou.
“Just what are you getting at?” Inuyasha asked as his ears flattened back. “Inuyasha!” Kaede practically spat, “Kagome loves you! Can you not see this?”
Inuyasha crossed his arms and stood back. He looked at Kaede with complete disbelief. Kagome's love was something to be hoped for, but never obtained, especially for him. Kaede sighed.
“Apparently you do not see it, although the rest of us do, along with your own feelings for her.” Inuyasha glowed as red as his haori and muttered a `keh.' “You'd better tell her before she decides what to do with that wish.”
“Keh! I don't know what you're talking about,” Inuyasha bit out. The blush that had appeared on his face only deepened as he protested. Kagome's scent wafted to him on the breeze. He started in the direction of the well as Kaede's words drifted out to him.
“You will loose her if you don't say anything.”

Inuyasha jumped into a run that would lead him quickly to the well. `Well, that didn't take very long,' he thought. He reached the well just as Kagome's head poked over the rim of the wood.
“Oi! What do you think you're doing, running off and not telling me,” he scolded more on principle than anything else.
“Ahh!” Kagome gave a little shriek and lost her grip on the ladder within the well. With a gasp, she lost her hold and fell back into the time slip, or she would have if Inuyasha hadn't caught a hold of her hand and pulled her out of the well.
“Don't scare me like that, baka!” she exclaimed as the hanyou set her on her feet.
“It's not my fault that you're a clumsy human,” Inuyasha smirked at the look she gave him. “So what did you go home for? You couldn't have needed anything already.”
“If my mother hadn't come up with a great idea, I swear,” Kagome muttered as she started walking towards the village.
“You swear what?” Inuyasha smirked at the girl's rising irritation.
“I swear I would make you suffer, that's what!” Kagome grit out stalked away from him.
“And how do you figure you'll manage that?”
“Urg! I don't know, I just will!”
“Yeah whatever. A great idea, huh?”
“Yeah! Tell me what you think when I'm done,” she said excitedly forgetting her irritation.
“Okay,” he said as he fell into step beside the girl.
“So you know how when you have a problem and everyone says you should have someone else who is outside the problem look at it and tell you what they think?”
“Uh, yeah,” he answered. He had hardly understood anything the girl had said. Inuyasha blinked as she continued just a quick.
“Well, I went home to talk to my mother about what to do with the jewel. I told her that you didn't want it and that I didn't know what to do with it because it is so dangerous and using would close the well. She said I should just use the jewel to wish for the well to stay open!” Kagome grinned hugely at Inuyasha when she finished.
“Uh, I guess that would work,” he started.
“Think about it! I get rid of the jewel and the well will stay open and that means I wont have to pick between my family and you!” she smiled triumphantly.
“Me?” he asked, giving her a sideways look out of the corner of his eyes. He saw her blush prettily and look down for a moment.
“Uh, well yeah. You are my best friend, after all,” she said smiling shyly while mentally slapping her forehead for the slip. “So what do you think about the wish idea?”
“I guess it would be fine,” he said feeling a little disappointed that she wouldn't just choose to stay with him. “What side would you choose to live on?”
Kagome tilted her head to the side and thought about it. `Darn. I still have to choose,' she thought. The pair approached Kaede's hut where the elder miko was still gardening.
“Oh, you've come back, dear. How was the talk with your mother?” Kaede asked pausing in her work to look at the pair.
Inuyasha leapt up to sit on one of the fence posts while Kagome launched into her rapid-fire explanation again. He was a little frustrated that the young miko hadn't answered his question. He snorted as she continued talking about her great wish idea.
“Hmmm,” Kaede murmured, as she thought. “It might just do the trick, but child, where will you stay? You still need to finish your training. Power like yours needs to be controlled.”
“Yeah,” Inuyasha broke in during the slight pause. “The village is growing and needs another strong miko. That and you wanted to learn how to fight. You can't go back yet,” he finished.
“Oh, stop making excuses for why you want her to stay,” Miroku called out as he and Sango walked towards the herb garden.
“Can it, monk,” Inuyasha growled, glaring at Sango. The exterminator wisely turned her giggle into a cough.
“Excuse me,” she said covering her mouth as she smiled. Miroku's grin grew wider at the hanyou's discomfort.
“Hi guys! What do you think about wishing for the well to stay open?” Kagome asked, oblivious to the exchange.
“I think it's a great idea, Kagome-chan,” Sango said moving to stand next to her friend.
“It would do, but you could,” Miroku began slyly, “always wish for…”
“Shut up, you pervert, we don't even want to hear it,” Inuyasha cut him off before something lewd could come out of his mouth.
“Inuyasha! You wound me! To think that I, a humble monk, would have impure thoughts,” Miroku said dramatically clutching at his chest.
“Says the monk who's getting married next week,” Inuyasha rolled his eyes and crossed his arms over his knees. “Your problem, bouzu, is that we know you for what you are, a perverted lecher,” Inuyasha glared at the monk.
“Inuyasha, stop…” Kagome started.
“You seem a little grouchy today, Inuyasha. Shouldn't your mate be taking care of that?” Miroku grinned wickedly. “Oh, wait, you can't because you haven't claimed her yet.”
Sango gasped and latched onto her fiancée's arm to drag him away from the growling Inuyasha. Miroku just grinned as Inuyasha unfolded his arms and gripped at the post he still crouched on.
“Houshi-sama!” Sango would have scolded more, but the deepening growl from Inuyasha had her saying something about needing to talk to the builders. The two left Inuyasha still fuming and twin expressions of shock on Kagome's and Kaede's face.
“Inuyasha, stop clawing furrows in my fence,” Kaede frowned at the hanyou.
“Keh,” he muttered without looking at either woman before leaping from his perch and heading quickly into the forest.
“Claimed who?” Kagome asked.
“Inuyasha should really explain it, but suffice it to say, he is nearing the age in which many, but not all, youkai would look for a mate,” Kaede said. “It is said that inu-youkai are exceptionally devoted partners.”
“Really?” Kagome inquired, surprised.
Kaede nodded and said, “Go after him, dear. He should be the one to explain this to you.”
“What do you mean?” Kagome questioned as she turned to go into the woods, but Kaede had already turned back to her garden. Kagome shrugged and walked off.
