A Heart's Game
Summary: a heart will play many tricks upon an unknowing soul and there is no way to tell a true love from fantasies of the mind.
Kagome finds out the hard way that InuYasha may not be the one.
*******************
Her heart bled like rain pouring from the heavens above. The wind howled with the screeching intensity of a thousand dying wolves.
The clouds were black as night, considering it was midnight.
She was running, but from what wasn't known, at least not to anyone other then herself. No one saw her tears or her pain, she hid it so well. She collapsed against the cold, frozen ground. She raised her head to the pouring heavens and cried.
“Why?! Why did this happen to me?” she sobbed as the rain hid the tears.
Oh bleeding heart inside me
Why do you torture me so?
Stabbing relentlessly
Such a painful bliss I know
The rain seemed to be the only one to have any pity on her.
She didn't understand why it happened that way. Everything had been so perfect, and then fate decides to take everything away.
The rain beat down on her as she sobbed.
Those memories of them flooded back.
It was all her fault.
*****************************Flash Back************************************
Kagome was walking to the hut, from the bone eaters well, when she heard some unusual noises. She decided to check them out before returning. And as fate would have it, her heart shattered.
There was Kikyo and InuYasha, in on of the most loving and knowing embraces she'd ever seen.
She literally felt her heart, what was left of it, shatter in her chest.
But what is this?
A jewel inside
Something seems amiss
As the jewel is shattering slow
InuYasha was holding Kikyo, his face nuzzled into her clay neck.
She could hear what they were saying clearly.
“....... Kikyo I'll never leave you again, I promise”
He breathed on her neck in a raspy breathless voice
“I want your promise. Your full promise”
Kagome felt her heart shatter even more.
`NO HE'S PROMISED TO ME' her mind shouted, but her mouth wouldn't move to say.
“Is that what you want?”
“Hai, that's all I want”
“I, InuYasha Taisho, son of the ruler of the eastern lands and heir to the western lands, promise myself to you Kikyo. I promise to be with no other and stay with you until death.” After making his speech he sealed his promise with a lustful kiss.
Crystalline tears formed in Kagome's eyes and blabbed to InuYasha that she was there.
“Ka---Kagome, I uh, I didn't know you were ...” he was cut short.
Kagome did the one thing that came to mind before running.
She slapped him, hard. Tears streamed down her face as her hand connected with his face in what seemed like slow motion.
“I hate you” she whispered. If not for the complete shock and silence surrounding the forest, not even InuYasha would have heard her statement.
That's when she ran, fast and hard.
Oh heart what painful days beckon me?
As the day dons upon us
Is this the days of reckoning?

*****************************End Flash Back*************************
It was still pouring a flood's worth. Kagome had given up all hope of being happy. She stayed in her same spot for a while, sobbing to the heavens.
A rustling followed by a blood-curdling scream was heard.
A piece of InuYasha's haori was tossed aside, followed by his head.
His head rolled to the side as Kagome screamed in horror.
A second scream was heard followed by a body being flung outward towards Kagome.
The body landed on her, toppling her over. She screamed and threw the body off.
Kikyo's blood spewed on Kagome's body as she was throwing her off.
Watch as the punishments handed out
People try to escape it
Some even cry out
Though they are the fools whom created it
Kagome stumbled to get up, but when she finally gathered herself, she bolted.
It wasn't long until she ran out of strength to run on.
No village in sight. No hot spring to relax in. Not even a simple lake or river. She sighed and sat on the edge of a rock.
Tears sprang from her eyes once again. She didn't bother to stop them, no one would see. This time she didn't have her friends to cheer her up. She didn't even have Shippoe to cuddle with.
She had nothing.
Oh heart what fortunes do declare?
None of which I see,
But all is pain and misery
All was once silent
Until a noise broke through blissfully
A laugh, heard amongst the crowd
“I suffer naught, for I refused its rude beckoning”
Is the words ruptured aloud.
Or at least she thought she had nothing.
Warm, strong arms wrapped around her frail body.
She felt hot breath on her neck.
“Kagome” the voice breathed.
She tried to turn in his grasp, but he wouldn't allow her.
“Come with me Kagome, stay with me” he begged
“Kou—Kouga?” she questioned
“Hai, come back with me, InuYasha and that dead priestess are no longer of any consolation.” He said calmly.
“You.... did you?”
“Not me, but some one who hates them just as much”
“Who?”
“Don't worry, just come with me”
She looked down at his hands. Blood.
He lied.
“Kouga, you did this. You killed them!”
“So what if I did. You would have. I see the look in your eyes every time they are together. That acid look, hatred and resentment.
It was only a matter of time, but you would have.”
“Kouga”
“Come with me Kagome, there is no reason we can't be happy together.”
“No”
“What?”
“No. I can't not with you, not now not ever”
“I don't....”
“Of course you don't. I still loved him, no matter how many times I say I hate him it doesn't change my heart!!! NO, that's.... that's just it, it's a hearts game. That's it, that's all it is.”
“Kagome, I still...”
“I know, just go.”
He left, utterly confused and heartbroken, just like she had started out. But she had figured it out. It had been a hearts game all along, never real, never fake, just a simple game in which no one wins and everyone looses.
I regret nothing for refusing its stay
Allowing it to leave that same dreaded day
Refuse it
And you shall regret it
Permit it
And you shall suffer it
Either way you lose
The game you heart will choose.

A/N I know.... it didn't make that much sense
But I wanted to kill them in this fic, so I did.
