A Light In His World of Darkness
One-Shot
For weeks he'd been watching. Watching the same girl go in and out of the same tavern styled bar he ventured in. The same night of each week for a month she'd gone in at the same time, sitting at the same place, ordering the same drink, leaving at the same time, with the same indifferent look on her face. Oh how he was compelled to watch her week after week of the same routine. He never tired of watching her not even for a second.
So strange for a creature of the night to be so infatuated with a mortal without feeling the thirst, no need whatsoever to taste the oh so familiar blood. Not once while watching had he the urge to stalk her in the darkness and then wrap his strong arms around her fragile frame and sink his teeth into her neck, sucking the warm blood from her. Strange. What was so interesting about this female mortal that captivated him? He didn't even know her name. Yet he felt compelled to watch her, talk to her, to...feel her.
It was on this night as he watched her the need to talk to her, to be closer to her was at its strongest. Finally after an hour or so he stood from his usual dark corner table he walked over to the young woman that had mesmerized him for so long. Without a word he sat down next to her in the booth and looked at her. She had just now removed her eyes from her drink to look at him with her brown eyes.
What should he say? That he, a vampire wishes to get to know her? That he had been watching her for weeks and suddenly felt compelled to talk to her? All the time he sat there she, not once, looked at him with a questioning manner. She had the same indifferent look on her face as she watched him, as he sat there poised and unmoving. Finally he opened his mouth to speak.
“Your name?” He asked. Minutes he sat there silent wondering what to say and this were the best he could come up with? How pathetic of a vampire was he that a mortal could leave him speechless. Of the years he'd been alive, the things he'd seen, the only thing he could come up with was `your name?' Oh how the other immortals were laughing at his weakness.
“Kagome.” She said as she returned her gaze to her drink.
`Kagome' He thought in his mind, a beautiful name, and one that suited her well. Still he was left with nothing to say. His years of wisdom couldn't help him now. What could he say to a woman he'd just felt compelled to be near? He was still curious as to why he even approached her in the first place.
“Why is it that you're here alone?” He asked, yet another brilliant thing to ask. He was starting to feel ignorant, something that he hadn't felt in years.
“Why do you ask?” She looked up at him for the first time with something besides indifference on her face. She too was curious of him. Why he had approached her. Why he had sat in silence before finally speaking.
“Just curious.” The words left his lips and he watched the girl with great intensity. What was it about her that had him so enthralled?
“I'm always alone.” She replied. “And you? You have not given your name or a reason as to why you are talking to me.”
An intelligent one, this mortal, her responses were quick. “Inuyasha.” He introduced himself. “I'm still at odds with myself as to why I approached you.”
“Really?” Kagome asked. She turned to look towards the bar. “What is it exactly you hope to figure out by approaching me?”
“I'm not sure. I just...felt compelled to.” Inuyasha replied. How he wanted to slap himself. Not one intelligent sentence had left his lips since he started this conversation with this woman, this Kagome. What was it that he wanted from her, certainly not her witty comments and her truthful words?
“I think I will leave now.” Kagome scooted out of the booth seat. She walked over to the bar to pay her bill. Not looking back, not even once, she left the tavern bar leaving Inuyasha.
How long he sat there he did not know. It felt like an eternity. Finally he stood once again compelled by his need to be near her. He followed her scent out of the bar and down an empty street. Her intoxicating scent led him to an apartment building. Through an open window he could see the figure of the woman he had followed. He could vaguely see her shadow, as she got ready for bed.
Effortlessly he jumped onto the fire escape, inches away from the window. Without being noticed he slipped in through the window and into the chair that was a few feet from the bed she was about to lie in. She had her back turned to him, just finished tying her hair into a loose ponytail. She then turned around and gasped as she saw him.
Her first reaction was to hurry and pull on a robe to cover herself. She was wearing an almost see through baby blue spaghetti strap nightgown. Once the robe was securely wrapped around her body she looked at him with anger. “How did you get in here?” She asked, no fear in her voice whatsoever.
“I think the question is why am I here, not how.” He replied. Inuyasha stood from his seat and approached the young woman cautiously. He stopped when he was a centimeter away. He could hear her steady breathing as if his ear were right next to her mouth. His hand left his side and he unloosened the robe, slowly opening it and letting it fall to the floor. He placed his hand on her shoulder and trailed it down her arm, feeling her warmth.
Oh how he missed the warmth, the very feeling of being alive. Now he was feeling it through her. His gaze never left hers. She stared at him in awe. She shivered as his hand trailed down her arm, finally encircling around her waist. He pulled her closer and nuzzled her hair. Closer, much closer. He wanted to feel more of her. He leaned down further and brushed his cheek against hers, then finally pressed his lips gently against hers.
The incredible pleasure he felt. Electric shocks jolted down his spine as the warmth slowly entered his body. She was enveloping him in her warmth. She too felt the same electric shocks as his cold lips touched hers. Even though his body was cold, she felt very hot.
What reason did she let this man not only get away with breaking into her home, but let him kiss her. She didn't even resist at all. No, she practically invited him the moment he sat down in the booth with her. She felt his other hand wrap around her waist, pulling her even closer if that were possible. Hesitantly she placed her arms around his neck and stood on her toes to press into the kiss.
It was at that moment Inuyasha realized what he was doing. He'd heard stories from ancient immortals. How their loneliness reached its limits and they found a human to `entertain' them. Eventually they gave them the `dark gift' as they called it and gained a companion for a while. Long enough for the immortal to occupy themselves or long enough for the new immortal to be taught what needs to be taught and then leave to enjoy the world in a new light.
Was this what he was doing? Was he unknowingly searching for a companion to end his loneliness? Had it been eating away what was left of him that he unconsciously searched for someone who would peak his interest and keep him interested for a few years? No, this was more than that. He wouldn't use her for his own selfishness. He wouldn't turn her into what he thought to be hell but was too weak to end his so-called `life'.
Slowly he pulled back away from her lips only to look at her glazed eyes. How long did he stand there looking in her eyes? He stepped away from her only to realize that dawn was approaching. He couldn't leave her without an explanation, but he couldn't reveal to her what he was, not just yet. Leaning in close, his lips next to her ear he whispered.
“Until next time.” And in the blink of an eye he was gone.
Kagome stumbled back bumping into her nightstand. She turned and sat down on the bed. She couldn't believe what she just did. A stranger broke into her apartment and then she let him kiss her. She picked up her robe from off of the floor and placed it at the edge of her bed. Standing up she went to her window to shut it then crawled into bed, still confused by what happened. Hoping a good night's sleep would answer her question, she succumbed to exhaustion and fell asleep.
-----------------------------
The following week the young woman that had so enticed him wasn't waiting in the tavern bar as she had the previous weeks. Disappointed, he decided to see if she was at home. Quickly he ran to the familiar apartment building that Kagome lived in. He jumped onto the fire escape and looked in the window. She was sitting in the chair across from her bed reading a book with a lamp as her only light. She was wearing the same nightgown as before with no robe.
He gently tapped on her window startling her. She dropped the book and quickly stood up facing the window. Recognizing him instantly she opened the window. “What are you doing here?” She asked taking a step back so he could walk in. The breeze from the window reminded her that she wasn't wearing a robe.
She went over to her bed to grab her robe but was stopped when Inuyasha grabbed her arm. As last time he ran his hands up her arms and on her shoulders. He wanted her. He hadn't felt this way since he'd been alive. He wanted to reveal the very nature he was supposed to keep hidden from the world. No one was supposed to know he existed but he wanted her to know. And for her he would break the rules.
Kagome shivered as his hands ran up her arms. Inuyasha pushed her back to sit on the bed. She looked at him questioningly and patiently waited for him to speak. “I'm a vampire.” Inuyasha admitted. He looked to see what her reaction was. A tiny smile formed on her lips.
“I didn't think you were human.” Kagome said with a hint of amusement in her voice.
“You believe me?” Inuyasha asked shocked. Most humans laughed it off thinking it as something clever to say.
“Hai, I believe you. How else would you have gotten up here when the ladder to the fire escape is broken? And then last week you disappeared within a second, and your skin is so cold.” Kagome grabbed his hand to touch the cold skin. “I didn't really believe in vampires before this...”
“You don't care?” Inuyasha asked.
“Should I?” Kagome asked. “Is there a reason your telling me this?”
How could he explain that he wanted her? A vampire who she had just met briefly a week before desired her in a way a vampire usually doesn't. Lust was a feeling vampires no longer felt once they died. Yet he lusted for her, needed her. His body craved the feel of warm skin. His soul or what was left of it wanted her and all of her for the eternity he would live through.
“Loneliness for vampires comes often, because we live for so long. We watch as humans die and desire them for companions but can't bear the thought of them dying in a lifetime. But we don't want to turn them nor can we stand the company of other immortals. Or at least that's how it is for me. I want no one else's company. I want you and only you throughout eternity. Vampires usually don't have the need for lust but you bring it out in me. I lust for you, I crave you.” Inuyasha let it all out. All he could do now was wait restlessly for her answer.
Kagome sat still, contemplating what he said. He just told her was a vampire, not only that but he lusted for her, a feeling vampires no longer have. What could she say? She just met him last week and only talked to him for a couple of minutes and then shared a kiss before he disappeared. She looked at him.
She looked at his poised form. He was tall maybe six feet. He had long black hair and piercing brown eyes. His skin was tanned. She assumed he had just fed. He was built strong and statuesque. With his vampire blood he was perfect. He would never get older. He would never change at all. Only his personality would change year after year but his appearance would always stay the same.
She knew how it felt to be lonely, to be alone for so long. She was always different from everyone. After a while she just kept to herself, eventually having little to do with anyone as possible. She grew tired of things the way they were and went to the tavern style bar every week on the same night in hopes of finding something new, something more exciting.
And here it was in front of her, a new life, a more exciting life. Did she want this life, to be bound to a vampire and maybe changed into one later? Could she live with it? Having to kill mortals to survive? Would she do all of this for him? She gazed into his eyes seeking the answer she needed. She grabbed his hand once again to feel the cold skin.
“And if I agree to be your companion, what happens then?” Kagome asked.
“That can be decided later. I don't want to think of those things until the time comes.” Inuyasha said. “Nothing is decided until we discuss it. If you choose to be with me, nothing will be definite. You can stay human if you'd like. I will endure the pain of watching you grow old if I must. With my remaining days until I wish to end it, I'll spend it thinking of our times together.”
Kagome brought a hand to his face and gently brushed her fingers along his chin. Inuyasha grabbed her hand leaning his face into her palm, letting her warmth surround and comfort him. When he opened his eyes to look at her there was a smile on her face. Her gentle expression was still unread to him, was she rejecting him? Accepting him? He patiently waited for her answer.
“I'm yours.” She finally whispered.
Inuyasha cradled her face in his hand. That was the answer he'd been hoping for. He didn't know what he would do, should she reject him. Luckily it didn't come to that. He leaned forward to brush his lips against hers. Something he'd wanted to do since last week. Now she was his, as he was hers. Companions they would be, lovers. Throughout time they would be together enjoying the sights, the new ages.
Kagome hesitantly kissed him back. She was still very new to being intimate. This was the only time she'd been this close to a guy. Inuyasha was her first kiss and soon to be first and only lover. Other people would think she was rushing but the loneliness inside of her was threatening to consume her, besides there was a connection between her and Inuyasha, one that was quickly formed but would be hard to break.
They both sat on the bed in each other's comfort. They would have an eternity together to do things, to learn more about each other. Tonight they wanted to simply be close to one another.
I know I've been gone for a while. Lately I haven't really found any inspiration or motivation to write. I wrote this because I wanted to see how I wrote when it came to...deeper stories. Hard to explain. I wanted to see how well I write a story like this and hopefully it was good. I wanted to see if I could write a deep connection well and of course it was about vampires because I love vampire stories. I do have to say Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles influenced me to write this but nothing was taken from her writing. I just admire it.
Sorry I've been gone for so long. I'm back from vacation (obviously) and am starting to work on my fics. It may take a while because I've got horrible memory and forgot where I left off. I should stop putting myself in these situations but I love to write. Thanks for those who reviewed even while I was gone, the same great reviewers, and readers!
I'm glad you appreciate my work and hope you enjoy this one too.
Oh and I hate to put this here but I'd appreciate it if people wouldn't use my e-mail addresses to send chain letters and stuff. I hate to be rude but it needs to be said.
And another thing if you don't like my writing then don't read it. It's as simple as that. You don't have to leave reviews of what you didn't like. No one said you had to read the lemons I write or anything. I write what I want to. I don't want to be rude but if people are going to leave me reviews that isn't constructive criticism then what's the point? If you think you've wasted time reading my work then why bother wasting even more time leaving a review complaining about it? Sorry to those who do like my work, I don't mean for you to read this but it does need to be written, for my peace of mind if nothing else.
THANKS SO MUCH!
