Return.

On the third day of chopping trees for lumber, around dusk, Sango and Miroku returned.

I can caught their scent on the wind, and knew that they were near the village. Probably trying to fine Kagome, Shippo and myself in all the wreckage. I figured that they would assume that we had died when they didn’t find us there, and I really needed them here. Kagome needed someone who could actually dress her wounds properly. And I needed Miroku here to help me with this.

Dropping the wood I was about to chop, I bolted towards the-what-used-to-be-village.

When I arrived there, some huts were still smoking slightly, the ones that had not yet been on fire when I had found Kagome. The place looked worse without the fire. The huts turned to burnt piles of ashes, the ground scared. Half burnt, and completely burnt bodies littered the area, and I had to look away before the image could make me sick. The scent on burnt human flesh and fear still hung heavy in the air. Along with anxiety, and shock. Those two I had assumed were from Miroku and Sango who were somewhere searching for us in the debris.

I found Miroku first. He was the closest to the entrance to the village. He was standing above one of the many burnt bodies and praying softly. I’d help him bury the dead later, first I needed to get Sango to properly bandage Kagome’s wounds. I couldn’t just do that myself, in order to do that then I would have to remove her shirt. I had Shippo bandage then first, but only roughly, and then put another shirt on her.

Even if I didn’t like it, the pup had already seen her naked, as he bathed with her and Sango all the time. So it was really not a problem. And considering the pup only thought of Kagome as a mother, my youkai side wasn’t getting overly aggressive to the pup seeing her naked.

Plus this pup was kind of like my son in a way too, if I was going to have Kagome as my mate --as I was determined to do once I found the right way to tell her how I feel-- then the kit was pat of the package. I could handle that.

“Miroku.” I said loudly, and he jumped, whirling and gasping for breath.

“Inuyasha?” he asked cautiously. I could tell from his scent --and his expression-- that he wasn’t entirely sure that I was really here. “Is that you?”

“No.” I snapped quickly, rolling my eyes. “I’m Santa Claus.” Kagome had explained to us was ‘Santa Claus’ was last Christmas. . . She had to explain what Christmas was to us as well.

“It is you!” He stepped forward, as if to embrace me, then stepped back. Either he wasn’t sure if I was real or he wasn’t sure if I’d like the contact. “You’re not dead are you?”

“Do I look dead to you Miroku?”

“Well . . .”

“Don’t answer that.” I hissed. I had caught my reflection in the river on the way here. And in some way I did look kind of dead. My eyes had been dull, my ears slightly dropping, my hair was tangled more so then it usually was, my face was pale and coated with sweat. I was skinnier then usual. I hadn’t eaten much in the week I had been gone, and I hadn’t eaten anything for the four days I had been taking care of Kagome, I was more worried about making sure that she was feed first. The skin of my cheeks were slightly sunken into my face, the bones jutting out more.

Actually . . .I probably looked more dead then I did alive.

“What happened?” he asked.

“I don’t know.”

“I meant to you, but I’m guessing you were applying that to what happened to the village right?” I nodded. “You weren’t back when this happened?” I shook my head, not trusting my voice right now. This smell was making me sick. “Then . . .is Kagome . . .?” he couldn’t say it, just like if she had of been I wouldn’t have been able to believe it.

“No. She’s fine . . .or rather, she’s alive.”

“What happened to her?” his relief strongly present on his face.

“I don’t know that either, but she got torn up pretty badly.” Shippo had told me the extent of her wounds. Her legs scratched all the hell, the forearm on her right arm broken, then there was her shoulder. “Shippo had come to fine me when he saw that the village was burning and destroyed. He said he wasn’t sure if any of you survived it. When I found her, she was half buried in burning wood, and had a sharp piece of wood sticking out of her left shoulder. She’s been asleep for a while now, unable to do much of anything.”

“Where is she?”

“In a cave not far from here, Shippo’s looking after her. I’ve . . .been busy.”

“Trying to find who did this?”

Actually . . .that hadn’t even crossed my mind. I was so concerned about building Kagome a home to live in that I wasn’t even thinking about hunting down who did this. I knew it had to be a who, which meant that the who was a demon. Demonic aura was almost completely covering the area. These were demonic flames.

“No. I was actually building a better place for us to stay in.”

“Ah.” he nodded, understanding the necessity of this. “Maybe it would be best if we go find Sa-”

“Inuyasha!” Sango’s cry startled me, I hadn’t smelled her coming. And then when she ran towards us, and launched herself at me, I was so frozen in shock that I almost toppled over, sending us both into the ashes. “I-I thought you and K-Kagome . . .” she didn’t finish her sentence. I had never seen the slayer like this before.

“Uh . . . Sango?” I wheezed, she was crushing my lungs.

“Sorry!” she yelled, jumping back from me and looking down in embarrassment. “I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have done that. I just thought that you and Kagome had . . .died here with the rest of the village.” she looked up, and just then noticed that Kagome wasn’t with me. “K-Kagome? Where is she!? She . . .she’d didn’t . . . .did she?”

“No.” I said quickly, shaking my head. “But we need to get out of here. This smell is making me sick.” My stomach rolled as I said this, and I had to fight to hold down what my stomach wanted to heave up. Even if there wasn’t anything in it to heave.

“Okay. Kilala!” Sango yelled, and the giant cat appeared out of the diminishing smoke. She roared quietly, rubbing up against my leg, and I scratched her ear a little.

“Missed you too.” I murmured to her, as Miroku and Sango climbed onto her back. “I’ll be in the trees, you should be able to follow me there. Every once in a while I’ll jump past the tree tops, just to make sure you’re going the right way. Sango, I’ll need to you properly bandage Kagome’s wounds when you get there.”

“Her wounds?” her expression turned worried and shocked, and anxiety growing. She was concerned as well.

“Nothing life threatening, but I was unable to bandage then properly.”

“Why?”

“Uh . . .” My face felt hot, but I knew the blush would not reach my cheeks, they were to shrunken and malnourished to show my embarrassment. “I don’t think . . . Had she been conscious . . .” I sighed. “ I do-”

Miroku took over for me. “Kagome may not have been practically happy about Inuyasha removing her shirt to bandage her wounds.”

“Oh . . .” she nodded in understanding. Glancing at me and I could tell she was fighting a grin. The grin may have been kept off her face but it was still evident in her eyes. I turned away from the amused look, finding not particularly funny about the situation.

She spoke again, making me turn my head to glance at her over my shoulder. “You look horrible Inuyasha.”

“I know.” I sighed again. I was going to have to eat something before Kagome awoke, she’d beat herself up with worry if she saw me like this. And that would only maker her condition worse.

Sango confirmed what I was thinking, as she repeated what I had thought, almost to the exact words. I nodded, thinking it best that Sango look after Kagome until I was . . .looking better. Because I felt fine, almost as if nothing was wrong with me. If not for the way I looked I would have assumed that nothing was wrong with me.

“Lets go.”

I silenced them as we approached the entrance of the caves, the entrance that was half hidden behind a mountain of ferns and trees. Holding said ferns aside, I allowed them to step into the dimly light cave first. We moved through the semi-darkness quietly, and when we entered the giant bubbled out cavern at the end with was light with the brightest fire, Sango gasped.

Kagome lay near the fire, her skin pale against the orange glow, unhealthy. She was in her sleeping bag --her bag had been in the forest, apparently she had gone to the Goshinboku to look for me when the village had been attacked and then ran back towards it to try to help-- and her shoulders, which were visibly above the green fabric, were bare. A bandage loosely put on around her left one. She hadn’t moved an inch since I brought her here three days ago. She hadn’t even woken up.

“Out, Out, Out.” Sango ordered, pushing Miroku and myself out of the cave. I could tell by the look in her eyes she planned on bandaging Kagome.

But my youkai side did not like leaving her along for very long. And I had already used my quota for leaving her by herself for the day.

I growled back, forced red into my eyes, then forced it to flash back out. Make her think I was on the edge of losing it, then she’d let me stay. And when she complied she still pushed Miroku out. Good idea, stupid perverted monk.

I settled in the far corner of the room when the least amount of fire light reached. I watched intently as Sango worked on getting Kagome gently out of the sleeping bag. Just as slowly and gently she started to remove her bandages. Then I realized what was wrong. Kagome was to heavy for Sango to hold up and bandage at the same time.

“Here.” I murmured quietly, trying not to disturb the kit who was curled up into a tight ball on a bed of furs.

I slide in beside her, and pushed her away, taking Kagome’s full weight on me. Honestly I had no idea why Sango was having such a hard time holding Kagome up. She was light as a feather.

“Thanks.” she whispered back. And I heard the exhaustion in her voice.

She proceeded to remove Kagome’s bandages again, and before I knew it I was staring at a complete view of the top of Kagome’s breasts.
Quickly I averted my gaze, looking down at the floor instead of what Sango was doing.

Time passed quickly as I stared at the floor, and it wasn’t until I felt myself sag towards the floor did I realize how tired I really was. I yawned --unable to stop myself-- and waited for Sango to finish. When she did I moved towards Shippo and curled up against the wall. I picked the kit up, and placed him gingerly in my lap. He snuggled closer.

Sango eyed my weirdly, but when I told her the only reason I was doing this was because the kit needed to sleep neck to someone and Kagome wasn’t exactly “cuddling material” right now, that I was his best option. She nodded, and headed to get Miroku after placing Kagome back in her sleeping bag.

I was half way asleep when Miroku and Sango returned. They settled for bed quietly.

I was asleep before they could even tell each other goodnight.

And while I slept, I dreamt of things that disturbed me.
