A LOVE THAT TRANCENDS TIME…

Author's Notes: This story is strictly fiction, the end of Inuyasha hasn't been released yet so if this is way off, it's just a story, my original ideas. DISCLAIMER: I DO NOT own Inuyasha or it's characters, nor am I receiving any compensation for this story, but I did try to stay as true as possible to the characters in the anime (a few changes though). Chapter 1

The end of things as we know it…

The sun fell below the horizon as the group of weary travelers made their way back to the village. A new peace seemed to have fallen across the land, as the evil youkai Naraku had been defeated. Kagome glanced around at the unique group that traveled together. Inuyasha walked beside her, quiet and seemingly lost in thought. Behind them, the demon exterminator Sango was helping the houshi Miroku while trying to avoid his wandering hands. Every once in a while Miroku would look at his right hand in disbelief, the telltale covering and sealing beads were gone, all that remained was an ordinary hand. His curse had been lifted after the death of Naraku.

Self assured and silent, Sesshomaru walked several steps ahead of the wolf youkai, Kouga.

At the outskirts of the village the young kitsune Shippo came flying down the road "Kaaaaaaggooommeeeee!!!!" he yelled in delight.

Smiling, Kagome caught the ball of fluff that flew into her arms. "Hello Shippo."

"You're okay?!" Shippo looked up with his big blue eyes.

"Hai" Kagome nodded. "Naraku is defeated" she said simply.

"Sesshomaru-sama" Another small figure giggled and ran down the road to meet the group, a huge smile on her small face. Kirara the fire cat youkai followed closely behind Rin, having stayed behind to guard Kaede, the old priestess of the village.

"Hello Rin. Are you well?" Sesshomaru greeted the young girl who stopped in front of him.

"Uh-huh. We played hide-and-seek with Jaken" Rin said giggling again, as she spied the green servant panting heavily and hurrying toward the group, using his staff as a cane.

"I see" Sesshomaru half-smiled at Rin.

"Master! Rin, come now the master is surely tired and won't want to visit with you." Jaken caught up and chastised the girl who looked up adoringly at Sesshomaru.

"It's alright Jaken" Sesshomaru nodded as Rin happily took his hand as the group continued walking into the village.

"Kagome?" Kouga asked as he fell in step beside her. When she looked over at him questioningly he continued, "may I speak with you privately?"

A growl from her other side made Kagome turned and look at the silver-haired man walking beside her, fangs barred. "Inuyasha! Stop, please." Turning back to Kouga "yes."

"Oh no you don't!" Inuyasha stopped and turned to face Kouga and Kagome. "No way wimpy-wolf is taking you away, Kagome."

Kagome allowed Shippo to hop to the ground. "Inuyasha, Kouga isn't going to take me anywhere, he just wishes to speak with me."

"Keh" Inuyasha scoffed. He crossed his arms over his chest.

Kouga smirked "what's the matter, dog-turd? Afraid Kagome will go with me and leave your sorry butt behind?"

"Not a chance, wolf-boy!" Inuyasha unconsciously placed his hand on the sword Tessaiga at his side.

"Excuse me!" Kagome stood between Inuyasha and Kouga, who were each glaring hatefully at the other. "Kouga, I'll speak with you and Inuyasha, I'm not going anywhere with anyone, okay?" She reached out and placed her hand on his arm in a peace offering.

"Hhmmmmpph" Inuyasha turned and stomped off toward Kaede's hut, Shippo on his heals. Kagome's eyes grew wide, she was actually able to talk with Kouga without using the s-word to force Inuyasha to let her.

Kouga grinned and turned to Kagome. "Thank you. Let's go sit and talk." He pointed to patch of grass under a nearby tree. They walked over and sat down.

"What do you wish to talk about, Kouga?" Kagome asked once she was comfortable. They watched the others disappear into the village.

Kouga's expression turned serious. "How many shards of the shikon jewel remain until it is complete, do you know?"

"I, I" Kagome was confused by Kouga's question. Reaching under her shirt, she pulled out the nearly complete jewel. "I'd say probably two, maybe three shards I guess until it is whole again. I don't really know for sure"

"Wow. Kouga looked in awe at the jewel. "It's so much more than what I had." Kouga had a jewel shard in each leg and one in arm until they were brutally stolen by Naraku and he was left for dead. Kagome and Inuyasha found Kouga and nursed him back to health. "What do you plan to do when it is complete?"

Kagome replaced the jewel under her shirt and looked thoughtful. "I honestly don't know, Kouga. I haven't really thought about it, or wanted to before now."

Kouga reached over and grabbed Kagome's hand "stay here, with me. I love you, Kagome. I will do my best to take care of you, make you a good life here. I want you to be happy, Kagome. I owe you my life."

"Kouga" Kagome pulled her hand away. Neither noticed the red-clad figure with silver hair standing and listening behind a tree about four feet away. Inuyasha had to resist the urge to go and strangle Kouga. He didn't want Kagome to know he was spying, he knew she wouldn't be happy. With a sigh she began "You are a very good friend and ally to have. You helped us defeat Naraku, and we will always be grateful to you for that. As for my future after the jewel is complete, I don't know what is going to happen. But I can't be with you like that, Kouga. I don't want to hurt you and I'm sorry, but I don't share your feelings in that way."

Kouga interrupted quietly "It's because of mutt boy isn't it? He began to grow angry. Inuyasha's ears perked up at this turn in the conversation. "No, it isn't because of Inuyasha." Kagome made a point to use his name in the conversation. Inuyasha's ears drooped. "I care for him a great deal, but he has issues with Kikyo that have to be resolved. I don't know what's going to happen, Kouga, but all I can be is your friend." Kagome stood to go join the others at Kaede's hut. She didn't notice the flash of red that took off to beat her there.

"I'm sorry if I scared you, Kagome. Please remember that offer will always stand." Kouga stood as well. "I must go rejoin my pack, what's left of them. We have some rebuilding to do."

Kagome nodded "Goodbye, Kouga, good luck. Remember to stop by and say hi once in a while." Kouga took Kagome's hands in his once again.

"If you need anything, you know where to find me." With one last squeeze of Kagome's hands, he began a quick run away from the village. Without the jewel shards in his legs, Kouga is not nearly as fast now as he once was. Kagome walked slowly into the village where her friends and the other villagers were busy preparing a feast in celebration of their victory.
