Chapter Four:
Traveling Together:
A bright light assailed Inuyasha's closed lids, jolting him awake. 'Huh? That's strange… I thought for sure I was awakened by a light just now.'
Looking around he saw no light and everyone was still sleeping. He decided to re-stoke the fire and settled back against his tree, trying to figure out what had wakened him up. 'If it was a light it's gone now. But what the hell was it?' He thought confused.
Inuyasha looked around for any signs of anything amiss, but found no scents and no traces that anything had actually happened.
He settled back against his tree and closed his eyes again but kept his ears alerted for any sounds.
Kagome woke just long enough to shift a little closer to the source of the warmth she felt against her. Her eyes sleepily took in the relaxed face of the boy next to her. 'He looks so peaceful,' she thought sleepily. She moved the arm that was across her shoulders, to her side so that he would be more comfortable. She pulled the sleeping bag up a little higher and then snuggled back into sleep.
Inuyasha's eyes opened the minute his ears had picked up the sound of Kagome shifting. He watched her stare at the guy's face a minute, and smile. Then she pulled the cover up a little, and snuggled back into sleep.
His eyes narrowed at the sight before him. He growled low in annoyance that Kagome was snuggling with that stupid mercenary. He stood up because he knew that he wouldn't be getting anymore rest tonight. 'I can't sit here and watch her snuggling into him without wanting to tear him apart! But I can't do that because it would hurt and even kill Kagome… Damnit, we had better find Naraku and get this curse removed soon!'
Inuyasha decided to walk off into the woods and search around a bit to see if he could find any clues, either about what woke me up, or where Naraku was hiding.

About an hour before sunrise Bankotsu felt a warm, slender body pressed against his chest and his side. Not used to that unless he had been to a bordello, which he hadn't been to one in a long time.
He opened his eyes and gazed down at the girl sleeping next to him, with his arm around her. He thought back to the previous night and remembered how they had ended up in this position. 'After all it wouldn't do me any good to keep her alive, if she were to get a cold and die on me any ways, right?' He tried to reason with himself.
He smiled at the thought that she had obviously snuggled closer to him in her sleep in an effort to warm up and be more comfortable. She had even moved his arm so instead of being across her shoulder, it was down by her side. He felt his face melt into a smile.
His eyes widened when he realized what he was doing and his smile fell. 'What is wrong with me? I smile because a wench is snuggled into me?' Shaking his head to clear it, he ordered, 'Snap out of it now Bankotsu!'
Snapping out of what ever had begun to overcome him, he quickly masked his face with a blank look and let his eyes wander around the sleeping occupants of the camp.
Once again he noticed that Inuyasha was missing and got a puzzled look on his face. 'Now where did that stupid mutt run off to?' he thought as the muscle beside his jaw ticked.
XOXOXOXOXOXO
"Let's see how well you survive now Bankotsu. You may be a tough opponent on your own but with little miss priestess by your side during battles you will be weakened greatly." Naraku taunted as he watched them through the small girl's mirror.
"Kukuku! And you Kagome are going to be the real target. Now that Bankotsu is weakened due to my binding spell, I can attack directly at you. If I destroy you he will also die." His eyes gleamed with malice. "Yes I will attack you soon… But for now I shall sit back and enjoy the show."
Naraku cackled evilly again as he walked down the halls to his hidden rooms, deep inside his castle.
XOXOXOXOXOXOXOXO
Back with the Inutachi and the Schichinatai Bankotsu sat by the tree wondering where Inutrasha had once again disappeared to and why.
He felt movement from the girl against his chest and realized she must be waking up. He snapped his gaze to her face and saw her eyes slowly open. He heard her sharp intake of breath and smirked.
After opening her eyes, which were met by brilliant sapphire blue ones, Kagome realized she was leaning against a man's chest and sat up straight.
She blushed and mumbled, "I'm sorry I didn't mean to sleep all over you like that."
The man chuckled, a deep, surprising sound. "S' okay, I didn't mind at all." He smiled charmingly at her and teased, "In fact I quite enjoyed it." as the hand still by her side lightly squeezed her hip.
Kagome and Bankotsu's eyes widened slightly as they felt a jolt of something go through them at the touch.
Kagome's blush deepened for a second and then disappeared. She snapped her head up to look at him and demanded, "Hey! I didn't say you could touch me you know. So hands off unless you want to have a dirt pie for breakfast."
Bankotsu's chuckle rumbled again as he looked into her eyes. He teased playfully, "Aw come on now, you know you liked it." with laughing eyes.
She warned, "Bankotsu..." hands on her hips glaring at the man before her. She fought the urge to roll her eyes. 'Really does he have to act like such a child all the time?'
He smirked, holding her gaze. "I got you to stop being embarrassed, didn't I?"
Sango had woken over an hour ago and came back from tending her bladder. She noticed a member of their group was missing. She walked over to Kagome and asked, "Hey where did Inuyasha go to?"
Bankotsu informed her, "He had already left when I woke up this morning." His shoulders lifted in a careless shrug. He turned back to Kagome. "We need to go wake the others so we can eat and start our journey."
Kagome protested, "What about Inuyasha?" She stomped her foot petulantly. 'No way am I going to leave without him!'
Before Bankotsu could say anything, Inuyasha stepped out of the trees and bushes. "I am here Kagome."
She smiled at him and nodded.
Rolling his eyes, Bankotsu took Kagome's hand and went around waking up his men.
Bankotsu woke Renkotsu and ordered, "Get up and be ready to leave. As soon as everyone eats, we are leaving!"
Renkotsu grunted and rolled out of his bed. He walked over to the fire.
Bankotsu lead Kagome over to Jakotsu and squatted down. He poked his friend in the shoulder. "Up Jakotsu - now!"
Jakotsu mumbled sleepily and rolled over.
Shaking his head, Bankotsu warned, "I am only going to say it once more Ja. Either wake up now or else!"
Jakotsu mumbled again and began snoring loudly.
Bankotsu rolled his eyes. "Alright I warned you" He pulled back his free hand and slapped Jakotsu on the ass hard enough to redden his hand and make Jakotsu jump awake from the impact.
Jakotsu whined, "Damn it Bankotsu! What did ya do that for?" Jakotsu stood up and pouted his lips. He reached back rubbing his now sore backside vigorously to take away the burning sensation.
Bankotsu laughed as he stood up. "I warned you Ja." Turning serious he ordered, "Now get ready to leave, because as soon as everyone has eaten, we are leaving."
He turned around to walk away and warned over his shoulder, "If you fall asleep again Ja, I will use a bucket of ice water and fish - now get moving!"
Bankotsu led a wide eyed Kagome away by the hand.
Still rubbing his tender backside Jakotsu glared at his big brother and mumbled, "Stupid rude awakenings. My ass still burns." He pouted. "Big brother is so mean."
Bankotsu chuckled as they walked away back over to the tree so that Kagome could collect her belongings.
Kagome recovered from her shock and lightly scolded, "Couldn't you have just nudged him awake or shaken him?" She packed her belongings.
Bankotsu chuckled, before saying, "I tried that remember?" Seeing her raised brow, he explained, "Ja isn't the easiest person to wake up, in fact, if he was any harder to wake up - then he would be like me."
Kagome laughed. "You're not a morning person, huh?"
Bankotsu's arms crossed over his chest as her stared at her, eyes and voice were stern. "Anyone who wakes me up, unless specifically told to do so, is taking a risk of getting beheaded."
Kagome's eyes widened.
Bankotsu laughed and assured her, "I'm just messing with you." He turned serious and continued, "But, I can become a grumpy bear when woken up."
Kagome laughed nervously and stated, "I will be sure to remember that."
Bankotsu smirked. "Don't worry about it. You are the only one who could safely wake me up."
Kagome guessed wryly, "Because if you kill me then you die too right?"
He nodded. "And because waking up to such a pretty girl mellows me out some." He winked at her. 'Heh, she clearly has no idea how to react to me… it's amusing to watch.'
Her eyes widened and as the fact that he'd just given her an unexpected compliment sunk in. Her cheeks flushed.
He sent her a charming smile. "Come on Kagome, breakfast should be ready now." He led her away by the hand. 'Hm for some reason I enjoy holding her hand now.' He thought smugly, 'Probably because it pisses that stupid mutt off to no ends.'
Inuyasha woke up Miroku, by nudging him with a foot. "Better get up now unless you want to travel on an empty stomach monk."
Used to Inuyasha's gruff manner Miroku grumbled and got up. He nodded to Inuyasha, and then they walked over to the fire.
Kagome and Bankotsu passed out fish, nuts and berries, and then everyone sat down and ate.
Sick of fish Kagome filled her stomach on just the nuts and berries.
After everyone had eaten Bankotsu stood up and informed the group, "We leave in ten minutes so you had better be ready." He led Kagome back over to the tree by her hand to wait.
Kagome picked up her yellow bag and put it on. She grabbed her bow and arrows.
At the same time, Bankotsu grabbed his Banryu and hefted it onto his shoulder.
Kagome looked at the man beside her. "I'm ready, we can leave now."
He nodded and reached for her hand again.
She inhaled deeply and then entwined their fingers.
He smiled and led her over to the others by the hand.
Inuyasha scowled when he saw their hands entwined, and barked, "Let's get going!" His jaw ticked. 'Why do they have to hold hands?'
All of the humans and the hanyou set off on foot.
Kagome and Bankotsu led the way holding each others hand, with Shippo on Kagome's shoulder.
Too annoyed to stand by Kagome because she wasn't even throwing a fit over the hand holding, Inuyasha walked behind with Sango and Miroku with Kirara on Sango's shoulder.
Jakotsu and Renkotsu walked beside each other bringing up the rear.
Half way through the day they stopped by the river to refill their canteens. When they were about to leave again, Kagome froze and looked at Bankotsu. "I sense the sacred jewel!"
