The day had been hot, and as the sun fell and night gre upon them, the wind grew cold, frighteningly cold. Sesshoumaru looked down at the young child beside him. Her eyes were barely open, but she made no complaint, nor asked for him to stop. She kept well at his side, sometimes her small hand clutching in the silk of his hakama. Reaching down with his single arm, he wrapped her up, lifted the exhausted and sweaty child and placed her upon Ah-Un.
The great beast gave a low moan, a sound that of a thank you almost. For the youkai dragon too had seen how tired the child was. The two headed beast turned one of its heads back, nuzzled the now sleeping child's neck and shoulder gently before turning back to the path in front of it. Watching the taiyoukai in frint of him, Jakken used his Staff of Two Heads to lever himself upon the great beast as well, taking his place behind the sleeping child.
Sniffing the cold night air, Sesshoumaru motioned for Ah-Un to stop. Leaving his pack behind, the silver haired inuyoukai went on ahead. There was blood in the air, blood he knew. His brother's among the scent of humans, and one young kitsune youkai. His brother's pack must have been hurt badly.
Through all his posturing to the contrary, the cold, distant youkai truly did care as to his brother's welfare. Oh he meant what he always said, when the time came, he would surely be the one to deliver his brother the killing blow. If he had his way, that time would not come for centuries. Though this secret he meant to keep from everyone, unless things between he and his brother suddenly changed. With a mental sigh he continued his trek, things never would change between them, time had proven that already.
"Kagome, you're hurt," Sesshoumaru heard his brother say as he came upon the dark side of the camp.
"Inuyasha-"
"Don't lie, I can smell your blood," the hanyou grouched.
Sesshoumaru watched, his face stoic as his brother stopped the miko from wrapping his wounds as he searched out hers. The hanyou growled, a low angry snarl when the wound was revealed, a deep gash stretching along her hip.
"The youkai did this to you?" he growled low, as he began leaning closer to the wound, following the blind instinct that told him to close her wound the inu way.
"Well sort of," she said, her brow furrowing as he moved closer still. "It happened when he threw me into the tree- Inuyasha what are you-?"
Kagome gasped at the first touch of his tongue, the other's of their group already bandaged and asleep. At first his gentle lapping hurt, the would too fresh, too painful. But soon the feeling became warm, soothing, making her sleepy. The low growling, almost a purr coming from the hanyou made her drowsy, her eyes drooping, the times between her eyes being open and closed lengthening.
Inuyasha caught Kagome, laying the girl gently back upon her sleeping bag as she slept. Once he had her moved, her wound mostly closed, he covered her with his haori and stood. He had smelled his brother's scent since he first came within reach of the camp, though he knew they were all too injured to fight him well, if at all. Nodding to the tree in front of him, he hopped up into the tree and settled himself upon a thick branch.
"What do you want?" he asked gruffly, though his voice quiet.
"I scented your blood, your packs blood. I was curious," Sesshoumaru answered after settling himself near his brother, his voice cold and indifferent.
"Look bastard, they can't take anymore fighting and I - I can't fight you."
A single delicate silver brow arched at his brother's sullen confession. The suprise in his face soon turned to concern as he noticed something. His brother not only wasn't looking at him, but also didn't seem to be focuing on anything else. In fact, when he thought back, his brother had been using his nose the entire time when finding the girl's injury. Waving his hand in front of his brother's face confirmed his suspicion, Inuyasha had been blinded.
"What youkai have you been fighting?" the taiyoukai asked, a hard edge to his voice that hadn't been there before.
"Some poison youkai, looked like some sick cross between a bull and a wolf," Inuyasha answered tiredly, sounding defeated and angry.
"A wolf with horns, it's two back feet hooves?" Sesshoumaru asked quickly. "The poison came from it's upper fangs as well as it's horn tips?"
"Yeah, you fight it before?" Inuyasha asked with a low growl.
"No, but I've heard of these abominations. Did you kill it?" Sesshoumaru asked, the tone of his voice telling Inuyasha his answer was upmost importance.
"Before or after the fuckin' thing blinded, speared and kicked the shit out of me? It damn well threw Tetsusaiga a good mile away. It took me three hours to find the damn thing."
"Did. you. kill. it?" Sesshoumaru asked again.
"No! Alright, I didn't kill the damn thing, he got away!"
"Inuyasha, this creature cannot be allowed to live."
"I know damnit, it had jewel shards."
"That's not what I meant," Sesshoumaru growled. "If you do not kill him, then you will remain blinded, none of the wounds brought about by fang or horn will heal. For the poison to be cured the creature must be killed, there is no other alternative."
"And how the hell are we suppose to find it, let alone fight it?" the hanyou growled low, agrily.
"Finding it will not be a problem, it will come to you. I will fight it," Sesshoumaru said, a snarl escaping his tight reign.
"Careful Sesshoumaru, someone might think you cared about us," Inuyasha jested sarcastically.
An uncharacteristic snort was his only answer. Sesshoumaru watched as Inuyasha's eyes grew heavy, the hanyou nearing an exhausted pain induced sleep. Once his brother was asleep, and past the point of being able to be roused, he took the hanyou down out of the tree. Laying his brother next to Kagome, he watched as Inuyasha curled next to the girl in his sleep, wrapping his arms around her and drawing her close to his body.
"Kagome stay back!" Inuyasha snarled at the girl as he and his brother moved closer to the bull-wolf youkai.
"Inuyasha be careful!" she cried out, doing as he asked, though her bow was drawn and aimed.
The youkai had crashed their camp just moments before sunrise, expecting to find them already dead and ready to eat. Not expecting to find a taiyoukai, healthy and more powerful than any he had ever encountered before ready to kill him on firt sight. This youkai proved to be a challenged however, as it had already been fighting them for nearly two hours.
Sesshoumaru snarled low, angry, his eyes glowing red as he slashed his sword. Millions of energy daggers sot through the air at the youkai, slicing through the beasts left shoulder and laying open the skin on his back.
"Inuyasha," Sesshoumaru's voice rumbled with the effort it took not to fully transform into his true form.
"I smell it," he affirmed. "Wind Scar!" the hanyou bellowed as he slashed his own sword.
The strikes of golden power slashed across the ground like angry claws, the energy ripping through the youkai and seperating bone from bone, the body torn in several pieces, though the beast remained alive. Walking up to the creature, Sesshoumaru held the hilt of his sword tightly and speared the blade through the bull-wolf's head and deep into the ground below.
"Miko," the taiyoukai commanded. "Come take the shards."
Kagome nodded, putting her arrow back in its quiver and slinging the bow over her shoulder as she jogged up to the carcas. She had barely covered five feet before another bull-wolfd appeared and launched itself at Sesshoumaru. With no time to think, only to react, the girl raised her hands, palms out to Sesshoumaru and screamed his name.
Pink light exploded from the girl's body, not just her hands, engulfing Sesshoumaru and the creature. The inu taiyoukai watched in fascination as the creature launching at him was dissintegrated in senconds, the warmth of the miko's power turned on him. His arm felt, numb, tingling as though it were slowly awakening. It was then he noticed that it was his left arm he was feeling this from, she had returned his arm!
Looking back, he noticed the girl still locked in the throes of her power, unable to control it's force. She was struggling, he could see. Sweat beaded upon her brow, as her body trembled and her eyes wide in fear of her power possibly tearing her apart. Calmly, Sesshoumaru walked back through the range of her power. Wrapping the girl up in his arms, he tipped her head to the side, biting into her neck, pinching a nerve without breaking her dleicate skin, he knocked her unconscious.
"What the hell was that?" Inuyasha asked as he came closer, his sight fully returned. "What the hell did you do to her?"
"She is merely asleep brother, there is no need for concern. Tell me, has she ever been trained with her powers?" Sesshoumaru asked as he passed the unconscious miko to his brother.
"As far as I know, Kaede-baba has only trained her in herbs and being able to sense things. Fire arrows."
"Not in how to use her raw power?" Sesshoumaru asked.
"Not that I know of."
Sesshoumaru woke, his eyes opening in the golden glow of the late morning light. He never would forget how his arm had been returned to him, nor how he had come to be accepted by his brother's pack. It was a strange thing. Looking down, he found Rin still asleep in his arms. Kissing her hair, he joined her for a bit more sleep.
