Disclaimer-I do not now nor will I ever own Inuyasha or any of it’s parts. However Chidori is mine and I don’t like sharing. Leave her be!

`Things were as they should be' she told herself that same thing over and over again. She'd been telling herself that for three years now. That's how long she'd been here in this time, trapped and no hope of returning to the life she once knew. Things had happened so fast and now the days seemed to slip by in an odd sensation that left her mind in the same fog it had been in since the defeat of Naraku.
Things had been strained the week before the final battle, tensions running high and people irritable. Kohaku's death had Sango's `blood lust' screaming for vengeance and had Miroku doing everything in his powers to save Sango from herself, while Inuyasha's heart was broken yet again by finding that Kikyo had simply used him to get to the shards Kagome carried. And she had been sure Shippo would hate her forever because she had taken him to the only place she could where he would be safest, the Southern Tai's lands. It turned out that Shippo was destined for something far greater than anyone had planned, he would be the Sesshomaru of the South, a powerful Taiyoukai when he reached his maturity.
Kagome's tail twitched as she wiped the tears from her eyes. Yes she had a tail now, one more thing to add to her new life. She was something of a mix between youkai and human now, but really neither at the same time. The way she understood it in her own head; she had to be a human miko, pure of heart and soul, in order to protect the jewel. However living here and facing the dangers that were required to protect it meant she had to be more than human to live long enough and have the strength to do so. She saw herself as a mix of Inuyasha and Sesshomaru. She had Sesshomaru's markings on her face and the abilities that came with all high ranking Inu youkai, yet she had ears that were black like Inuyasha's. A small sigh escaped her as she thought back to the battle that had changed so much and left nothing as it had once been.
In the end it had been Sesshomaru that had protected her and caught her when she fell. It wasn't that Inuyasha hadn't tried; it was just that he couldn't protect everyone and he couldn't save her. He had seen the fall of Kikyo and what little of her soul flow back into Kagome. `He still blames me for her death I bet. Kami, I didn't know that would happen.' Another sob like sigh, threatening of tears, escaped her trembling lips. She thought she was done shedding tears for him even as they prickled at the backs of her eyes.
Another deep breath and she continued her thoughts trying in vain to make sense of them. Power, she had needed something else to truly defeat Naraku. That's why the hanyou had no fear of her. He was certain that she wouldn't be able to channel enough power into herself to kill him and save the youkai and humans she felt so much for. Chidori, another hanyou who had been raised in the Southern lands, came to the group with the idea and abilities to teach her how to use youkai energy and apply it to her innate abilities. By doing this, she would have enough power to defeat Naraku. Apparently, the demon had destroyed her home and forced her to seek shelter elsewhere. Of course it required a few things form the youkai whose energy she was barrowing as well.
All she needed to do was find a person, or youkai, with the strength to bind them together and direct her power. Miroku and Sango had been injured and lacked the physical strength to do more than just stand when they tried. Shippo would have been strong enough to hold Kagome's power, but lacked the ability that comes with age and training to direct it and he wasn't there anyway, leaving Kagome to rely on Inuyasha whose heart was being pulled in different directions.
When she bound herself to him, she felt like she was being split down the middle. She felt his pain and anger tear through her mind. On the outside Naraku was being purified, but it was a slow melting process. Inuyasha wanted it to be slow and painful, so it was giving Naraku time to slice off the pieces that were being melted. The real problem was that Kagome's soul was being sucked out of her body and being feed to the scattered remains of a dead priestess. Inuyasha was trying to return Kikyo to this world, but either didn't realize or care that it would mean Kagome's death in the end if he were successful. She ran her fingers over the scars that were on her wrists and hands; left by the very person sworn to do her no harm.
In order to bind two people together, blood had to be shared. She'd used a knife to slice open her and Inuyasha's palms. During the binding and splitting of her power, Inuyasha's claws had dug into her wrists. The more she resisted the tearing and splitting inside her, the tighter his hands held hers.
It had been Sesshomaru that had forced the hanyou off her by knocking him unconscious and throwing him aside. He easily slit his hand and pressed them to Kagome's bleeding palm and wrist. His presence alone calmed her ragging mind and racing heart. Carefully, he gathered her close to him and held her there with his tail, while reconstructing her scattered thoughts together. Gripping tighter to him, she let him take control of her body, mind, and power. Naraku vanished almost instantly in a bright blue light, and his demons were annihilated shortly after their leader fell. Whether it was Sesshomaru's doing or simply that they couldn't exist with out Naraku, one really knew. After the battle, she remembered seeing Chidori carry Inuyasha away in order to tend to his wounds. She hadn’t seen either one since.

“Something troubles you. What is it?” a male voice asked as strong arms circled around her. Somewhere in her memory she had felt his presence as it climbed the stairs, heard the door open, and knew that all too familiar scent. Still she jumped slightly as his hands came to rest on her waist. He chuckled in her ear, “You really should pay attention to those extra senses.”
“Just remembering things better left in the past.” She leaned back against the warmth and comfort he often gave her when she needed it most. Pressing against him more when his mouth brushed her ear again, releasing feelings better left for other times. She never did figure out when it was that she fell for this unyielding, tall, arrogant, devilishly seductive youkai that now held her and her rapidly beating heart.
“Things like that are better left in the past.”
“Any news?”
With a deep sigh that he kept to himself, he allowed her to change the subject, “Shippo is doing well in his training and gaining quite the respect of his people. The other lords are hesitant, but will come around when the time comes.”
She smiled at the way his voice changed slightly at the excitement of a fight, shielded well beneath a cover of a mere second thought. She had seen a change in the cold Lord over the last year. Although he still rarely allowed others to see any emotion besides cold indifference, he would often soften and could even be sweet in some ways. Not that she would ever tell him that. Who would have thought the she would come to love Sesshomaru?
“And the others?”
“Your humans are making a life for themselves. The hunter is pregnant again and keeps wishing for you to visit.”
“Maybe someday I will. That'll be their second child.”
“Perhaps it is time we had one of our own.” He whispered it so lightly that she might have missed it if she were still human. She felt herself still against him and swallowed hard.
“I'm not sure what they would be. I don't want you to hate our child if it turns out to be a hanyou.”
“You are not human anymore. The proof of that is evident in your markings and scent.”
“Nor am I youkai. I was once human, but never a youkai. I think your blood did something to me that day. I feel different and it's not just the added abilities and physical stuff either. I think that's why I keep trying to remember what happened. I don't know what I am and I don't know what our children will be. Are you willing to risk having a baby if I can't grantee it wouldn't be hanyou or human?”
She turned to him just before starting that question and watched as emotions rolled through his eyes. Shielded well so that no one else would know, but she could see them. Maybe that was another thing that intrigued her about the youkai before her. His façade of ice was only so no one would truly test him, but fear him. Only those who were stupid enough to think they could win did not fear him and fools often fall upon their own swords.
She saw in passing seconds the shock, anger, and fear that he would not speak of to anyone including her. Finally he sighed as he pulled her down on the bed they shared.
“I expect higher standards of those I associate with. This means anything that is weak or a waste of my time I despise, however I have come to realize that not all strength is physical and sometimes it is not a youkai that is stronger than a human. I will accept any pup you give and treat them with the respect that they will earn on their own. You have the word of this Sesshomaru.”
During his little speech, he had pulled her to his chest and laid them both down upon the bed. Upon finishing his statement, he turned them so she was beneath him and kissed her. Nibbling lightly on her lower lip and dragging his fangs over the slightly abused flesh, he pressed a little harder as her hips jerked in an involuntary reaction to his ministrations. He continued his assault on her lips and neck as her fingers dove deep into his silky tresses. Her nimble and graceful fingers embedded in his hair, gently pulled and tugged his head where they wanted him to go, lightly grazing her claws over his scalp, ears and neck. A low growl escaped past his lips and had her breath catching in her throat.
His fingers were successfully undoing her kimono as she pushed his yukata off his right shoulder when all hell broke loose in the castle. She barely had enough time to cover the exposed swell of her breasts before the door was thrown open and a twelve year old Rin came in with an almost lifeless Jakken in her arms.
“Papa! They got Jakken!”
“Stay here and do not leave. I will deal with him when I get back.” he kissed Rin's head as he ran out of the room, ripping the dangling sleeve off as he reached to retrieve Tokoujin. Rin ran over to Kagome and laid her head on her lap. She ran her fingers over the girl's hair and back hoping to soothe her frayed nerves. It had been a rare thing for anyone to get close enough to actually make it into the castle, but it did happen. Even rarer was it that they would get to Rin, Rin's servants, or herself before Sesshomaru or his armies found them first. Jakken's state of health was a warning that these people were not to be taken lightly.
“Rin, come with me.” Kagome whispered as she stretched her senses out around her.
“But Papa said to stay here.”
“Please Rin. I need you to hide and keep Jakken safe. Come with me, Papa will know where to find us again.” She smiled as she took the young girl's hand and ran to one of the secret passage ways. Only a handful of people knew about this particular one. It led from Sesshomaru's study, Rin's room, Kagome's private rooms, two of the dojos, and to a secret hiding place under the castle that uses the castle's water supply as an escape route. Gently she lead Rin down the first se of steps. As she neared the bottom landing she felt a presence behind her. The pure hate and violence radiating off of it stole her breath.

“It's been a long time miko.”
She heard Rin's scream as she shoved the intruder back and told Rin to run. She could hear the strings of curses coming from behind her and ran faster, nearly pulling Rin along with her. She knew it was over just before they reached the river when Rin fell. Both girls went down hard, as Jakken's body was thrown to the river bed.
The hooded figure laughed as Kagome pulled an unconscious Rin to her breast. “Did you think it would be that easy to escape? To rid the world of evil? To save your friends?” His voice seemed to echo through out the cavernous space. Just as mysteriously as he had appeared, he disappeared. Kagome knew better than to trust her eyes. She use her extra senses and concentrated on the one person she could still trust to save her. And when this was over, she was going to have to do a lot of sweet talking in order to keep from getting yelled at like a small child…
Sesshomaru… Sesshomaru… Sesshomaru!

I'm a little busy at the moment.

I need help…

They will not make
it to the upper parts of the castle. You will be fine.

We would be if we
were still in our bedroom…

*snarl* Where are you?

Don't get angry. I did what we always said to do. I took the secret passage down to the river with Rin. Sesshomaru, they knew about the passage!.
These people whoever or whatever they are have something very personal against us… He was waiting for me.

Who?

I don't know. He was just there… I couldn't sense him…

Rin?

She's okay. Took a nasty fall when we hit the wet ground at an all-out run.
Damnit!

Kagome?

Losing… strength… hurry Sessho…

“Now, now, now, we can't have you doing that can we?” The voice finally stopped echoing and when she opened her eyes, all she could see was the lower half of his face. He was holding some sort of blue sphere, blue because it was taking her miko powers away from her, the color of her miko heritage. “Getting help will only slow me down and ruin my plan. It's you I want miko, that little girl you have there means nothing to me. Course she must mean something to Fluffy… Opps, guess I shouldn't have given that away? Good night Kagome.”

She never got a chance to duck as his fist flew out of the black cloak and connected with the side of her face. A black cloak with a red fire rat lining… the last thing Sesshomaru heard clearly before he lost their connection was,

Inuyasha, why?

It was taking too long to fight all these insignificant demons. He had more important things to do then slaughter these pitiful excuses for youkai. A slight whispering of wind had his fine hairs on the back of his neck rising in warning. He crouched just as a very large bone boomerang hurtled past his head. Looking back over his shoulder he could see the monk and hunter destroying the other demons leaving him to get to the river. His eyes meet with the woman and he gave a slight nod of his head and ran to the closest entrance.
He could smell Rin and Kagome's blood on the ground and a fierce low growl, promising of pain and massacre, rolled out of his throat. That's when he heard the movement and leaped upon the small heap of flesh near the water's edge.
“Forgive me, my lord. He was stronger than I expected. He knew our castle's secrets… tried to keep Lady Rin safe… took them both out by way of the river.” Jakken pointed his little battered and bloodied hand towards the river exit.
“How is it Rin got away from her attacker with you? Who attacked you?”
“The miko protects the child. A light of blue surrounded her when the coward tried to use his claws on her. Bastard son… he was the one who was hiding in the caves… had to weaken the miko's strength… used a magic crystal sphere…” Jakken's last breath had passed from his body. As he pulled the buddle of skin and bones to his chest, the warning hairs stood again.
A low laugh started, and grew louder, bouncing off the walls of the cave.
`This must be what Kagome meant.' He closed his eyes and used his senses to find the source of the voice. Another growl was let lose as he found the crystal sphere, black as ink, mixed in amongst the rocks.

`I’d heard you'd gone soft. A Taiyoukai that shows affection? Pathetic.'

`Stealing a mate and child and using magicks to speak, some might call you a coward.'

`Bastard! We will meet again Fluffy! I'm not done playing with you yet!'

`I wait for the day.'

He then shattered the crystal into tiny pieces and the voice stopped. He carried the broken body back up the stairs and met the only two humans he considered worthy of his time, besides his daughter and mate, at the opening. They crossed to him and then followed him toward his study. Neither mentioned a word about Jakken, nor asked about Kagome or Rin.

“You seem to have had a vermin problem. Sango and I were on our way to visit Kagome. “
“You came armed to see my mate?”
“Naturally I never leave home without some form of self defense.” replied Sango in a nonchalant tone. “What happened here?”
“It appears a former ally has taken it upon himself to attack my home, kill some of my armies and servants, and then to abduct those dear to me.”
“Kagome would have been on the way to the river exit with Rin, only a handful of people know that and even if the attackers did find the caves, there's know way they would know which one to take…” Sango said aloud. “Who would do such a thing…” she trailed off as realization dawned on the only one who knew the caves better than Sesshomaru or Kagome.
“They could have just gotten lucky. Maybe Kagome thought they would be safe because no one knew about them.” supplied Miroku, hopping he sounded more convincing aloud than thought. ~*nope*~
“Kagome said he was waiting for her. Despite your reservations and inability to see what is clear, the intruder was identified by Kagome and Jakken. It was the half breed.”
An eerie silence fell over the room. Finally after awhile, Miroku asked the question he knew his wife would not, “So what do we do now?”
“You will do nothing. This is between me and the half breed.”
“Kagome is our friend and we care for Rin too you arrogant, prideful,-”
“Dear Sango let us not annoy the Taiyoukai even if what you say is true.” Miroku smiled at his wife and winked at Sesshomaru so his irate wife wouldn't see. “I think your healing skills could be used in the hallways.” leaning in to whisper, “It'll give you something to do with your hands.”
“Fine, I will help find Kagome though.”
“Of course we will.” he said as he pushed her toward the door. Turning back to the youkai, he pushed the hair off his forehead. “Time for a hair cut again, a pregnant woman is a handful. Mood swings, headaches, irritable, and not at all predictable… well maybe some things don't change as much in three years as they seem. So how can we help?”
“I will find my mate and child on my own without you or the hunter.”
“Of course you'll find them. When do we leave?”
**snarl**
“Listen, I understand that you can do this on your own. It took me four months of trying to convince Sango to leave our first born with Kaede for a night. After that battle three years ago, she seems to have developed a sense of fear about losing those she cares for… me as well if I'm to be truthful. I'm not saying you couldn't have handled those demons on your own, we all know you could have, but how much time did they make you waste? I know you'll be wondering later tonight `If I had just been a little quicker, if I had more time, if I had taken that corridor instead, if she had just stayed where I told her-“
“How do you know she didn't listen?”
“With all due respect my dear Lord Sesshomaru, but it is Kagome of which we speak and although I'm not one to speak ill of her, but when has she ever listened? The list of questions you ask yourself will go on I'm sure, but if you let us come along, we can help you deal with the insignificants while you save you wife and daughter. You still get to be the one that holds them in your arms at the end and you still get to be the one who saved them again.”
“You talk too much monk.”
“Probably, but generally it means I'm right.”
“Personal experience is a dangerous thing to wave under someone's nose.”
“It's also convincing and rings of truth.”
The two looked at each other for several more minutes, Sesshomaru looking bored and Miroku smiling coyly, as if he was just waiting for an answer he already knew.
“You realize that if you come you will have to fight against another `one you care for'? Can you fight against him?”
“If it is him who took Kagome and Rin, then he is no longer our friend. Will you be able to grant Kagome's request when she asks you to spare his life?”
**more silence**
Sesshomaru gave a slight nod and stood. “Be ready to leave within the hour. I hope you still have the firecat.”
“Never could leave her home. She smelled the trouble about two miles away…” Miroku shrugged his shoulders as Sesshomaru disappeared into a wall. He went to tell his wife that they were leaving.

************way down the river**************

“You will do as I say or the child will suffer greatly wench.”
“You'll have to get to her first. What's the meaning of this? Why did you attack us?” Kagome asked still unable to believe that Inuyasha had done something like this.
“You are needed to perform a ritual that should have been done long ago! I will have what is coming to me!” his hand shot out and slapped her hard across the face. With a wicked smirk he grabbed her hair, pulling her close enough to whisper in her ear, “Did he comfort you at night with his human hating? Did he tell you how he used to treat your kind in his younger days while he was fucking you? Did you enjoy it with your new youkai blood?” He hissed the last between clenched teeth.
Kagome's blood was heated with the anger of being attacked in her own home and of being unprepared. Adding insult to the injury was the fact that she had been taken by someone she trusted and now was suppose to serve their attackers' purpose. Suddenly the heat of fury and pain washed through her and she grabbed at the only thing she could, slicing with her claws, and carved angry lines down the side of Inuyasha's face.
Hissing now from pain as Kagome made for another swipe, he punched her hard in her unprotected stomach. She fell to the floor of the boat, gasping as he raised his hand to slap her again. She faded into unconsciousness as she heard him call for ropes to bind her.

She woke to a gentle shaking and hearing her adoptive daughter's cries. Reaching out a hand, she stroked the hair, dirt, and tears off her face. Since her hands were still bound, she lifted her arms and placed them over Rin's head. Pulling gently, the girl huddled closer to her body and soon the tears stopped. Together they slept in the comfort of each other and waited for Sesshomaru to come for them. As both faded into a dreamless sleep, Kagome looked around for anything that she could leave as a sign of their passing. Inuyasha may have lost his senses, but he was never as stupid as everyone believed either. He wouldn’t leave their scents behind to guide Sesshomaru to them before he was ready. Smiling to herself she whispered and incantation into Rin's ear and kissed the young girl's forehead. In the morning Kagome would ask permission to clean up near the river and allow Rin to leave their mark. Many things change in three years and one of the larger changes was Rin's developing miko abilities. She was showing promise and even if she failed, or the marker was destroyed her magical aura would not be easily displaced without a formal cleansing. Sesshomaru would know that Rin had done something here or by some chance this group had the needed abilities to cleanse the area it would appear to pure. Sesshomaru had witnessed many cleansing since Rin and Kagome had both begun training their innate abilities.
`Please hurry Sesshomaru. I'm worried about al of us…l'

`Do not fear, I will find you both and see you again soon my love.'

Perhaps she dreamed his response or perhaps it was real. Sesshomaru was never one to use affections with anyone but Rin, and even then it was odd sounding. As her eyelids drooped she began to plan how to keep her and Rin safe and together. Tomorrow was going to be a long day.
