Chapter 3
"Inuyasha.....OSWAURI! OSWAURI! OSWAURI!"
"Moumuffkinmitch!"
"I told you thirty minutes ago that we were tired and hungry. But nooo the great Inuyasha just has to keep pushing us on until we all collapse.” yelled a very angry Kagome as she knelt down to the depression in the forest floor that held Inuyasha's body.” Don’t you think that I want to find this shard too? My birthday was a week ago and I only got to go home for a day. One day. I hardly had any time at all to see my family."
As the spell wore off Inuyasha sat cross-legged on the forest floor. His arms crossed with his hands in the sleeves of his hoari. His head was bowed and his long silver hair covered his face as he sat in silence. Kagome was standing right in front of him ready to yell some more as Miroku, Sango, Shippou and Kirara looked on. She was opening her mouth to scream as Inuyasha spoke up.
"Feh, fine we'll stop and rest. I'm sorry you can't keep the pace. Just as soon as we get this shard you can go home. Ok."
"Thank you Inuyasha." replied Kagome calmly as the fire left her eyes. "Ok guys lets make camp and get some food."
The group split up to make the camp ready. In less than half an hour everyone was sitting down to eat. They had so much practice with it now; even Shippou could do it with his eyes closed. As the meal came to a close, the sun was setting overhead. The weary group of shard hunters lay on there blankets and began to fall asleep. All except the lone hanyou guard. Safely ensconced in a nearby tree nearby he kept a watch over the area even as his mind began to wander.
"It has been three years since Kagome broke the seal that held me to the goshinboku. Three long, long years. So many things have changed. Like my attitude. When she first let me loose, I was the grumpiest, moodiest hanyou known to human kind. My temper was short and I was so rash. Now look at me. I still have a temper don't get me wrong, but now it is tempered by these moments of deep thought. Shippou would have laughed his head off two years ago to see me deep in thought. Now he tries to act like me thinking before he speaks. Look at him. He has grown a good bit. He reaches mid thigh on me now and his hair is much longer. He has gotten much better at his foxfire and he is just a good kit. Not that I would ever tell him that. It's funny how he doesn't sleep with Kagome anymore. I guess he just got to old for it."
His eyes turned to the next three in the group. "Ah Sango. You at least still look and act the same. A pillar of quiet strength. I don't think the others even realize how they lean on you. You give comfort just by your courage. I have never seen you back down. I admire your guts in following your quest even when everything has looked down. I just can't believe you still care for that hentai Houshi. Ah Miroku. My friend. I bet you have never realized how much I do value your friendship and acceptance. Never realized how much I worry for you. The day Kagome found a way to slow the Kazanna I gave thanks to Kami. I had begun to get afraid that we would not save you in time. Now at least we have a chance. I am so glad. You too look the same my friend only a little more careworn. One day my friend I will help to remove that look from you. Heee! You are really desperate when you grab Kirara. Haa. Haaa. Look at her biting your finger. Smart move cat. Glad we still have you with us. Only one left to contemplate. It all comes back to her."
His eyes drift to the sleeping form of the Miko. Three years have changed her the most. Gone is the young lady and in her place is a woman grown. Kagome had grown a little more and now she stood as tall as Inuyasha's brow bone. Her hair had gotten longer and her body now had a woman’s curves. Inuyasha could admit she was a beautiful woman, but not for him. Things had changed for them everything had changed a year ago.
Had it only been a year. Sometimes it felt like a millennia. They had finally collected the last of the shards and found Naraku. The final battle had commenced as the evil hanyou had taken the shard from Kohaku's back and left the boys lifeless body on the ground. They had all attacked at once ready to cut Naraku down when suddenly Kikyo appeared and started firing arrows at them. Everyone had gotten out of her way and regrouped. As they began to attack again, one of Kikyo's arrows had grazed Kagome's arm. Inuyasha had quickly gotten her to safety and then started back to face Naraku. As he neared, he saw Naraku obliterate Kikyo's clay body. Souls flew thru the air. One snapped straight into Kagome. The missing chunk that she needed to be whole. They continued to battle hard. Just when it looked like they would win and it would be the end, Naraku somehow got his hands on Kagome and grabbed her jewel shards. They redoubled their efforts to kill Naraku before he could fuse the jewel and absorb it into his body. They did not make it. His evil laugh rang across the battleground as he held up the finished jewel. There was only one thing left to do now. Therefore, they did it. Kagome fired of an arrow and shattered the jewel again. As pieces flew in all directions Narku made his escape. They had not seen him since.
After that Kagome's powers had grown. She had found a way to slow down the Kazanna to buy Miroku some time. She also confessed her love to Inuyasha. She then asked for his love in return. It was the hardest thing in the world for him to do but somehow he found the words to tell her no. She cried and said that it was because she was not Kikyo. He tried to explain that that was not the case at all. She never understood as he told her that what was in his heart was love, just not the kind she was hoping for. He loved her as his best friend and sister. She loved him for himself and made him feel normal. She made him comfortable and happy. She just could not make his heart thump faster with feeling's one would have for their mate. He was sorry that this was the case. She had run away crying. She went back to her time and had not come back for over two weeks. When she did, she was quiet and things changed between them. They still talked but she was not his friend anymore. Sometimes she could not even look him in the eye. He really hated that.
He was sorry that it had come to this. He still wanted her as a friend. He would always be hers. Always protecting her when she needed it. Just not as her mate.
With this as his last thought, Inuyasha fell into a light sleep. As always protecting those he cared for.
Next Day
The day had dawned clear as the inutachi made its way to the village where there was supposedly a jewel shard held by a moth youkai. They were making good time when suddenly Inuyasha scented something on the breeze he had not had to smell in awhile. As he turned to yell at the others, he caught a foot in his back on his kidney and then he heard Kagome say "Kouga-kun."
