Chapter 11

As they approached the village on the outskirts of Inuyasha's forest, Kya became more and more nervous. What would happen when they reached the village? The others all had a relaxed air to them. Even Ayame seemed not to care that in moments they would be surrounded by humans. Kya could not continence it. She was starting to panic. Her whole body was wound tight and she had started to shake. She clenched all of the muscles in her body trying to appear calm as she tried to repress her fears.

Inuyasha was ahead of the others as they walked at a sedate pace to the village. He was the only one to notice that the closer to the village they got, the more upset Kya started to get. He could tell that she was struggling to calm herself. Moments passed as he waited for Ayame to speak to her. He would have maintained his distance if a faint hint of blood had not reached his sensitive olfactory senses. The smell had him lifting his head to sniff out which direction that it came from. It took him only moments to trace it back to Kya. None of the other demons in the group had yet caught the scent. As Inuyasha glanced at her, he saw one lone drop of blood edge from between the tightly curled fingers of her clenched fist. He made a split second decision. In the blink of an eye he was at her side and then she was in his arms as he bounded away from the others, taking just enough time to yell back at the others to go on to the village without them.

As he jumped into the forest named for him, he could hear Kya began to struggle in his arms as Ayame called out to her. He could hear Kagome step in to tell the wolf demoness that Kya would be fine. Inuyasha was not concerned that they would be followed. The humans could not track them even if they wanted and having told them to go on he knew that Kagome would take the others all in hand and lead them on. Besides, he had other matters to attend to. Such as calming the woman in his arms.

"Oi. Bitch calm down. We're just going to talk." said Inuyasha to the still struggling Kya.

Kya refused to calm and continued to twist in his grasp, making Inuyasha fearful that she would fall from his grasp and harm herself. He leaped high into the air raising Kya higher on his chest. He was carrying her in the bridal fashion and this made his next move somewhat tricky. His head twisted to her and he nipped her on the neck as he began to growl. As they landed, Kya held still and silent in his hold. Inuyasha paused and released his brief hold on her neck. He looked her in the eyes to see her reaction. Her eyes were wide and staring, locked onto his own unblinkingly. He humphed as he carried them quickly to the goshinboku. Upon reaching his tree, he launched them high into its branches seeking its concealing privacy. He found a comfortable branch and sat down putting Kya across his lap. He grabbed her still closed fists and brought them close to his face as he pried them open. Once this was done he could see the deep wounds her claws had inflicted. Blood welled and pooled in her palms.

"Bitch what the hell did you do this for." questioned Inuyasha of the silent Kya.

"I. I.." Kya struggled to speak and phrase a coherent answer.

"Come on you can tell me." Inuyasha coaxed.

"I'm scared."

"What the hell are you afraid of. We're only going to a village not fighting a bunch of demons carrying shards."

"That's the whole point. We are going to a village. A human village." cried out Kya before she got herself under control to finish. "I told you most of my story but not all of it. You remember me saying that it's been almost two years. The best part of that time was the months I spent with the wolf tribe. All of the time before that was very hard. I was lost here. I could not get back through the well. I wasn't sure what to do. I tried to go to a village and see if anyone could help me. That first time was the worst. The villagers were all screaming at me and then they tried to kill me. I wasn't prepared for that kind of attack. It took a moment before I ran. The next time was hardly better. I guess around the fifth time I got used to the reaction. I started to avoid the villages and human contact. I still met some on my travels but most treated me the same as the people in the first village. It hurt."

"There is nothing to be afraid of here." said Inuyasha seriously. “Look I know how you feel. I have been here my whole life. I know how most of the humans act. They are scared of us until they need our strength. Then once we do whatever job they need then they get scared again. You can't let that bother you. Just keep yourself together and don't fall apart. You have to be strong. Besides, you have friends now. We won't let anything happen to you. Ok."

"Thanks Inuyasha. I appreciate your helping me." said Kya as she pulled her hands into her lap. “Well uhm...I guess we better go find the others and I need to wash my hands." So saying Kya nimbly jumped from the tree and in a flash was gone.

Inuyasha sat for many moments cradled in the branches of the goshinboku. He was absorbed in thoughts of his past. His life had been very hard until he met his friends. However, he was from this time. He knew how people here reacted to his kind. He could only imagine what it was like for Kya. He was angry on her behalf even though nothing could be done for it.

A gentle breeze began to stir around him causing the branches to stir and a warm ray of the sun to glint in Inuyasha's eye. This made him sit up and swing himself to the ground. He scented the air and headed in the direction Kya had taken. The least he could do was take her into the village so she would have a friend by her side.

Kya was heading toward the smell of the human village when Inuyasha appeared by her side. His sudden appearance startled her. She had been deep in her own thoughts and he had come from downwind. He reached out and took one of her hands in his own to inspect. The wounds to her palms had already healed. Inuyasha shook his head in satisfaction as he released her hand to fall back to her side. He then turned from her and continued to walk in the direction of the village. Kya followed him in silence coming up to walk at his side. She wondered why he had followed her. Her mind puzzled over this for one moment before she realized that he was escorting her into the village so that she would not have to be alone. This made her smile.

She was still smiling as they entered the village. As soon as the villagers spotted them many yelled a greeting to Inuyasha and inquired who the demoness at his side was. Inuyasha did not answer, preferring to walk on ahead and let them find out on their own. Kya however was speechless. These people were being so nice. One child even stopped her to tell her that she was very pretty. Kya thanked the child and then ran to catch up to Inuyasha who was waiting by the door of a nearby hut.

As she neared he held up the mat that served as a door and ushered her in. As she crossed the threshold and stepped to the left to let Inuyasha enter her eyes were drawn to the old woman who gave off a pulse of power. Kya bowed her head to the old one and waited for her to speak.

"What the hell are you doing bitch." questioned Inuyasha as he sat near the back wall of the hut.

"Shush Inuyasha. She is being polite.” stated the old one. "Child my name is Kaede. I am the villages Miko. Kagome has told me that you name Kya and that you are from her time."

"Yes Miko-sama." replied Kya still bowing her head respectfully.

"Please come sit near me and call me Kaede-obassan as the rest do."

Kya lifted her head and took her place by Kaedes side. She was very thankful for all of Ayame's help in learning customs for their country. Kaede was giving her a small smile and her one good eye was twinkling as she looked at her.

"Well child Kagome has told me some of your story. So far the tale has been interesting. Please tell me the rest."

Kya again told her story. She left out what she considered the non-essentials, which included the fifteen months that she had wandered around Japan, trying to learn her own way in this strange time. As Kya told her tale, she could see Kaede nodding her head in spots and looking thoughtful in others. As she came to a close Kaede stared thoughtfully into the fire in front of her. Finally, she lifted her head to look at Kya.

"Kya I am not sure why you were brought here. Only that you were brought here for a reason." stated Kaede as they all looked at her.

"What do you mean Kaede-obassan." asked Kagome.

"Somehow the energy of the well is speaking to Kya. The well itself chose to let her through and into our time. When she felt it, the well was trying to speak to her soul. It seems it wanted her to know that she has a job to do. Kya herself must determine what this is."

Everyone sat in silence contemplating this thought. Moments passed as each traveled into their own thoughts. Suddenly Kagome looked up and announced that she was going to go home now. She announced to everyone at large that she would be back in three days. Goodbyes were given all around as Kagome took her leave to travel home. After Kagome had been gone for a few moments the rest of the group began to split up and head in opposite directions. Inuyasha stood and announced that he was going to patrol the forest; Miroku said that he was going to the temple to meditate, Sango was going to the nearby stream to wash her cloths and Shippou was going outside to play with Kirara. Ayame and Kya stayed with Kaede to get better acquainted.

They spent the rest of the afternoon in Kaede's presence. They talked for many hours discussing the future and Kya's presence in the past and what it could mean. Kaede filled them in on all of the things that the small group of shard hunters had not in the past days. She told them of Kagome's arrival and how they had been hunting for the shards for so long. They were told of Kikyo and how she and Inuyasha had been tricked by Naraku. They learned many things before the helped Kaede prepare the evening meal. It was a quite affair for them all. As they finished everyone prepared to sleep. Kaede crossed into the sleeping room of her hut as the others, except Inuyasha who propped up against the wall, lay around the fire.

Kya lay for hours trying to sleep before giving up and quietly making her way outside. Breathing in the clean air, she sprinted into Inuyasha’s forest and made her way to a tall tree some distance from the well. She leaped nimbly into its branches and found a comfortable spot. Leaning back she shut her eyes and let her thoughts flow like water through her mind. She didn't concentrate on any single thing. Instead, she just let the ideas jump one to the other. Just as she was starting to fall asleep, she thought of how nice Inuyasha had been to her that morning. She had been grateful. He must have known how petrified she was at the time. She thought of how calm he had been and patient. On a small sigh, she slid into sleep with a thank you on her lips.
