Chapter 14


The week passed by far too quickly for Inuyasha and Kya. Ever since the morning they had spent frolicking in the clearing, they had spent each day together. They tended to act like small pups let loose on an unsuspecting world. They spent a lot of their time chasing each other through the forest. Inuyasha was always in the lead with Kya following. She was fast and could almost leap as high and as far as he could. This was great for Inuyasha. Usually unless he was alone he never got to run this fast or jump this high. With the others he was always forced to hold back. Especially with Kagome on his back. She liked the feel of flying just not too high or too fast. With Kya he got to do both and she did it with him. It felt good to be so free. Inuyasha was coming to really care about Kya. She had the ability to make him laugh at the stupidest things. She could just look at him and cross her eyes and he wanted to laugh; it was great, but most importantly to him was the fact that he could just be himself.

Oh don't get me wrong Kagome was his friend and to an extent he could act like himself; but not fully. There were things that he wanted to tell her when he was with her but there always seemed to be something in the way. Be it her school, the rest of the group or himself having to save her from some threat. So he could never get things out. He could not even get that far with Kikyo. She had always held him at arms length when she was alive.

With Kya it was different. He could tell her things and she understood what he meant. When he felt like being silent she did not press him to say what was on his mind. This made him open up even more. He told her all about his childhood. How his mother had died and he had been left alone to fend for himself. He told her about Kikyo and then he told her about Kagome. She never said a word. She just let him get it all out and left it at that. Inuyasha appreciated that she could do that. It was a great ability to listen to him and not offer up advice like everyone else seemed to do. Being able to talk to her and play as he never had before made him happy.

The day that Kagome returned they had spent the day showing Shippou how to stalk small game. The kit was ecstatic, being able to have two adults spend the day with him showing him how to do something useful. They had bagged three rabbits and Shippou himself had caught two fat doves. They were laughing and complementing the kit when a familiar smell hit all three of them. Like a shot the kit was off as the two adults followed. As they came to the edge of the clearing surrounding the well they heard him cry out to the young Miko climbing from the well. She immediately kneeled down to hug the boy and give him a lollipop stuffed into the pocket of her jeans. Shippou was gesturing wildly to her, obviously telling her about his lesson in hunting. Kagome asked him a question and he pointed to the pair standing at the forests edge. Kagome waved and called out as they began to walk towards her.

Inuyasha glanced at Kya out of the corner of his eye. She was smiling at Kagome but looking somewhat sad. He hoped that it had nothing to do with him. Even though he was sure that it did. With Kagome gone he knew that he had changed somewhat. He was pretty sure that Kya was wondering would he now change back at her reappearance. He wanted to reassure her that he would not. Kya was his friend and even though he now had an obligation to protect Kagome he would not lose that friendship. They were still some feet from Kagome when he looked at Kya and voiced a low growl. Kya looked at him and smiled. She knew exactly what he was trying to say. She gave an answering growl as she walked on to Kagome's side.

Later after dinner the girls all went to take a nice long bath at the nearby hot springs. Ayame had opted to stay with Kaede as she had everyday since their arrival. Apparently Kaede was teaching Ayame some things about healing youkai. This made Kya laugh seeing her sister so attentive to the old miko. Who would have thought that Ayame would be so enthralled with healing. Kya did not think Ayame had even noticed that she was making a new friend in Inuyasha. Sango had sure noticed though.

"Kagome you would not believe the way Inuyasha has acted all week." said Sango as she lowered herself into the spring with Kya and Kagome.

"What did he do this time. He didn't terrorize Kaede did he." asked Kagome.

"No not at all. Quiet the opposite. He has been gone a lot and when he is around he smiles and I actually heard him give a real laugh at a joke. It startled me so bad that I thought he was ill."

"What he smiled."

"Yes. I think that someone has made a friend in him and changed his attitude."

"Who?"

"Well look straight across from you and you'll see her." finished Sango as Kagome looked at Kya.

"You got Inuyasha to smile and laugh. Are you a witch." laughed Kagome. "I have tried to get him to loosen up forever. Your here for a couple of weeks and you do it in no time."

"I think it is only because I can relate so well to him. I mean we are both hanyous. We have a lot in common." stated Kya as she shrugged her shoulders in and eloquent motion.

"I am glad that he has you as a friend Kya. He needs a friend that will relate to him. I am sure by now that you know what happened between us. Shippou tends to have a big mouth. We were friends and now things are just too tense. We can hardly speak to one another and he needs someone to be there so badly. I hope that he can depend on you."

"Of course he can Kagome and I hope all of you feel like I can be your friend."

"Thank you Kya. Now let’s talk girl talk. Let's talk about if Sango has finally worked up her nerve to grope Miroku like he does her."

With that said the fight was on as all of the girls began to kick and splash at one another. It was not long before all of the girls were tired. They quickly finished bathing and returned to Kaede's hut. As they reached the door Kya said her goodnights and then leaped out of the village to find a comfortable tree for the night.

After the first night that she had slept outside, it had become a habit between Inuyasha and herself to meet at the goshinboku and talk for hours. They would finally cross to different trees to sleep for the night. She assumed that after he had told her of his duty to protect Kagome that he would not be joining her that night. That is why she was so surprised to see him waiting on her. As she sat down beside him he smiled.

"Keh. Surprised you didn't I." he said.

"Yes actually you did. I had thought you would be watching over Kagome." said Kya with a smile to soften the words.

"Well she is safe enough with the others in the village. Besides with us out here no youkai can slip past us."

"Hmmm that would be very unlikely." Kya thought quietly for a moment and then eyes shining she asked, "Hey Inuyasha you want to go for a run." Before the words were even out of her mouth she was already off and running. With a laugh Inuyasha began to give chase as the night closed in around them.

The next morning Inuyasha woke Kya early to head back into the village to rouse the others. It was not long before they were all outside the hut and ready to go. Shippou ran right to Kya and hopped on her back as Kagome did the same for Inuyasha. Kya had to laugh at the sad look on his face. She knew what he was thinking. He was upset because he knew that as soon as they started out Kya was going to run and leap flat out. Shippou loved to fly almost as much as they did so he would not complain as they soared through the air before coming back to the earth. Kagome on the other hand would probably scream bloody murder if Inuyasha were to try it.

As Kirara took to the air with Miroku and Sango on her back; Ayame followed by Inuyasha and Kya carrying their cargo broke into a run. Moments later Kya gave a quick motion to Ayame. Ayame broke into a huge grin as Kya took to the air. Higher and higher she flew. As her feet touched the ground she broke into a fast run. Upon seeing her leaving them behind, Inuyasha gave an inaudible growl that only youkai could hear. His frustration rumbled in it. It took only seconds before Kya's infectious laughter floated back to him. He could not help the smile that graced his lips as he heard the sound.

By noon they were already some ways from the village. Since they were making such good time, Inuyasha magnanimously offered to stop early for the midday meal. The others, stunned at first, all spoke at once to thank him for his gesture. Inuyasha took it all in stride as they found a clear spot in the forest they were currently in. Kya and Shippou went to gather wood as Inuyasha found a stream to get water. It was not long before the group was seated comfortably eating their meal of ramen. As they finished eating they were all too comfortable to move. Miroku was discussing with Inuyasha where they could stay for the night, as Kya decided to egg Inuyasha on just a bit.

"Hey Kagome." she called out.

"Yes." Kagome said as she turned her head to look at Kya.

"How come we always have ramen. I mean we have only been with you guys for a couple of weeks but we have ramen all the time. Do you guys not eat anything else?" Of course Kya knew the answer to this. She had already been told of Inuyasha's obsession with ramen and how the others were sick of the food.

"Well we would eat something else but this is Inuyasha's favorite so we tend to have it often."

"Huh. I'd say you have it often. I think I have had it everyday. How can you stand it?" Kya began to giggle to herself as she noticed Inuyasha starting to get annoyed. She decided to push just a bit more. "I think that we should throw all the ramen out and find something fresh to eat. I'm sure that it can't be healthy to eat this garbage all the time." That is all it took she knew Inuyasha was really peeved at the slur to his beloved ramen.

"Oi. Bitch." he called out to Kya.

"Yes Inuyasha."

"You will not even think about throwing out my ramen. There is nothing wrong with it, it is not garbage, and I am sure it must be healthy. I'm certainly doing ok so it must be fine."

"Well Inuyasha I can't agree with that. Look at you over there. Your slurping those up so fast it's a wonder that it doesn't go up your nose." Kya had stood by this point and was walking over to Inuyasha. As she stood over him she leaned in just a little. "You know I bet that the ramen has made you slow jijii. In fact I can prove it."

"Keh and how will you do that." Inuyasha said as he looked into Kya's eyes. He could tell that the rest of the group was watching in fascination. Leaning in close to hear and see exactly what Kya had planned to do.

"Well I bet I can do this." so saying Kya reached up and gently began to tweak both of Inuyasha's ears. As he reached to grab her hands she jumped back and with a triumphant smile she said "Ha. Ha. Jijii you can't catch me."

Suddenly her laughter cut off. The group of shard hunters all turned to look at her face. They saw her leery expression and followed her gaze to see what could be causing her anxiety. Their gazes looked onto Inuyasha as he stared into Kya's eyes. He had a huge fanged grin on his face and his eyes were twinkling wickedly as he looked at her. Everyone was shocked to see that look on Inuyasha's surly face. Inuyasha decided to break the silence that had enveloped them by throwing his head back to laugh. The others all joined in with his deep chuckles. All except Kya. She had seen the look deep in his eyes that spelled payback in a big way. As he continued to laugh Kya started to ease just a little. She had even started to chuckle herself. She saw Inuyasha's ears swivel in her direction a split second before his head came up and his laughter died. The others continued to laugh for a moment before they once again caught the silence coming from the pair of hanyous. They looked between Inuyasha's now serious expression to Kya's wide-eyed gaze back at him. They heard Shippou whisper a quick "Uh-Oh" just as Inuyasha began to speak.

"Run." he quietly said.

"Excuse me." said Kya with a shake of her ears as if she had not heard him.

"I said run." so saying he jumped to his feet and bounded in her direction.

He missed her by a hair. As Kya had seen him pounce she had ran for dear life. The chase was on and Kya was determined not to be caught. The others all sat stunned as the two quickly dashed away into the forest. Kagome turned stunned eyes to the others to see their reactions. Miroku and Sango were wearing the same look that she was sure was on her own face. She shook her head and started to speak as she looked at Shippou. He looked like he wanted to laugh. Kagome started to ask him but called for Sango's attention instead.

"What the heck was that." Kagome asked Sango and Miroku.

"I'm not sure Kagome-sama." said Miroku with a frown.

"Me either. I have never seen Inuyasha behave in such a way." said Sango.

"You don't think he is going to hurt her do you." Kagome said looking upset at the thought. Laughter brought her head up to look at Ayame who had a gasping Shippou at her side with Kirara.

"Kagome-sama. Please forgive our laughter at your fears. We tend to forget that you three are human and as such miss some of the things that we do." said Ayame.

"What do you mean." questioned Kagome as the three humans in question all turned in Ayame's direction.

"Well Kya was trying to push Inuyasha's temper. She effectively issued a challenge. Inuyasha was giving her warning growls to leave him alone that she ignored. She knew that he would want to get her back but when he laughed he lulled her into a false sense of security. Then when he told her to run he was growling at her she better if she knew what was good to her. I still don't think Kya realizes what she has done." said Ayame with a shake of her head as she wondered just how much more to tell the others.

"What do you mean she doesn't realize." asked Kagome.

"By questioning his speed she was challenging him to prove that he was strong enough to lead. If they had been alone no problem, but instead she did it here in front of us all. So now he must prove that he is faster then she is. Do not worry however, he will not hurt her. It's not the way these things are done."

The others all continued to ponder upon Ayame's words as she laughed quietly to herself. Poor Kya she did not realize what she had done. She was from the future and had limited knowledge to how things were done with other demons. In normal situations a challenge like that issued from a female was to gauge if a male was suitable to mate with. It was just lucky for her that she had done it to Inuyasha. At least he was her friend and knew that she did not know what she had done. He would catch her and explain away from the others. That way she would not be embarrassed in front of her other new friends.

It did not mean that Ayame could not wait to tease Kya herself. Ayame could not wait for the ribbing she already had planned. She continued to laugh to herself and wonder how far Kya would get before Inuyasha caught her.
