Chapter 25


Kagome had wasted no time when Inuyasha told her to leave and go home. Standing as quickly as she could she ran from the hut not even stopping to tell anyone goodbye. She couldn't belive that Inuyasha was letting her return home for a whole month. Three days were still his limit on how long she could stay gone. He always told her how they had to complete the jewel and find Naraku. Kagome agreed so she always returned on time. Hmm...but who was she to look a gift horse in the mouth. This was more time that she could spend with Yusuke.

Reaching the well she jumped straight in. The blue lights of the time slip enveloped her caring her forward through time to deposit her genltly at home. Scrambling out of the well she made her way into her house calling out to let her mother know that she was back home. Running up the stairs she reached her room and grabbing the phone called Yusuke's number. It rang and rang and rang. No one answered. Putting down the phone in disappointment she noticed mama standing in her doorway.

"Yes mama."

"Kagome were you trying to reach Yusuke."

"Yes mama but he is not at home."

"Oh. Honey what are you doing home so soon. I thought that you would be gone at least a week."

"Well I thought that too but Inuyasha sent me home. I told him I only had a week to stay and then I needed to be home for about a month so that I could get ready for my tests and college entrance exams. Do you know what he said. He said 'Keh. Well maybe you should just go home then.' I was so surprised that I just came straight on home."

"Well that is good honey. You haven't gotten to spend this much time at home in years."

"I know mama. I was really hoping that I could reach Yusuke and let him know that I am still here. I guess I will just try to reach him tomorrow."

"You really like this boy don't you darling."

"Yes ma'am."

"Well maybe you should think about telling him the truth. It's not good to keep secrets of this size."

"Your right mama. I just don't know how to tell him that I travel through time."

"You'll find a way honey. Now come get something to eat and get some sleep."

Kagome did as she was told. Later lying in her bed she thought about what mama had said. Should she really tell Yusuke that she traveled through time. Would he think that she was crazy. Still she cared a lot for Yusuke. It was only right that she tell the truth. She would call him in the morning and meet him out and tell the truth. With her plan firmly in mind she drifted off to sleep.

The next day dawned brightly. Kagome woke with no prompting for once. Waiting until a reasonable time she tried his number. There was still no answer. Where could he be. Well there was only one thing to do now. Dressing quickly Kagome got dressed and ran to school. She made it into her class as the last bell rang. The day passed quickly as everyone asked her about her illness and if she was feeling well enough to be at shcool. Kagome took it all in stride. She was used to the questions now and fielded them easily. As the final bell rang Eri, Yuka and Ayumi met her outside of the school. The other girls got her to agree to go to WacDonald's with them. She had no real desire to go. All she wanted to do was return home and try to reach Yusuke again. They ordered thier food and sat to eat. Kagome was determined to eat quickly and leave. Stuffing a fry into her mouth she almost choked when she heard Eri recount her meeting with Yusuke.

"Ohhh. He sounds dreamy." Ayumi squealed.

"Oh he was very cute and he only had eyes for our little Kagome. So Kagome did you have lunch with him." Eri asked.

"Uhmm yeah we did."

"So tell us." Yuka said.

"Well he took me to the park and we talked for a while. It was nice."

"Oh no you can't stop there Kagome your blushing tell us the rest." Eri said.

"Well he asked me out and I have been kinda seeing him."

"Oh that's great. So have you kissed him yet." Ayumi asked.

"Yes it was nice."

"Ahh look at that blush girls. That kiss was better than nice." Eri said with a laugh.

"No fair Eri." Kagome said as she brought her hands up to her flaming cheeks. "Why don't you tell us how Hojo kisses."

This time it was Eri's turn to blush and stutter. Things degenerated from there with all of the girls teasing one another about kisses. The table was full of merriment and before Kagome realized it over two hours had gone by. She didn't mind though. This had turned out to be way more fun than she thought it would be. Standing she told her friends thank you for a good time and made her way home. As she entered the house she asked mama if Yusuke had called. When mama told her no she tried his house again. Darn still no answer. Where could he be. Well she had told him that she would be gone for a week. Maybe he had taken this time to visit a friend or maybe a buisness trip. Kagome felt her spirits deflate at the thought of having to wait a whole week for him to return. Trudging up the stairs to her room she did her homework before she laid across her bed and fell asleep.

The next day was much the same as the first at school. She attended all of her classes but not as many people asked how she was. After her last class she told her friends that she had to go home and couldn't meet up with them that day. As she reached home she grabbed the phone and dialed Yusuke's number. She let the phone ring five times before she started to hang up. Just before the phone hit the handset she heard Yusukes voice bark a hello.

"Yusuke. Uhmm. Hi."

"Kagome is that you."

"Yes it is. My ah Uncle didn't need me so I got to stay home. I have been trying to reach you but haven't been able to."

"Oh. I am sorry. I had unexpected buisness and had to leave town for a couple of days. I just got in about an hour ago and had just laid down to rest."

"I'm so sorry for waking you. I'll let you go."

"No. No you don't have to do that. I like talking to you. I missed you."

"I missed you too but I should still let you get some rest you can call me later."

"How about we meet up at WacDonald's later."

"Sounds good. What time."

"How about seven. Will that be too late for you."

"Not at all. See you then. Bye."

"Bye Kagome."

Kagome hung up with a big grin on her face. Mama seeing her expression as she passed by could only laugh softly to herself as Kagome danced up the stairs to her room. Once there she wrapped her arms around her waist and fell onto her bed with a laugh. She felt so giddy. Could this be love. Kagome had only ever been in love with Inuyasha but what she had felt for him couldn't compare to the happy feeling she felt in the pit of her stomach when she thought of Yusuke. It was like a thousand little butterflies tickling inside of her belly. It made her want to giggle, dance and sing all at one time. Just the whisper of his name made her tingle all over. Maybe this was love. Should she tell him so soon or should she wait. Certainly he knew that she cared already. Looking up from her happy daze she noticed that she better start getting ready if she was going to meet Yusuke on time.

Kagome bathed quickly and picked out a pretty sun dress to wear on her date. It was a white dress with little yellow sunflowers printed on it. It was a happy dress that made her feel good each time she put it on. Applying just a hint of gloss to her lips she walked downstairs and slipped her sandals on by the door. Yelling a goodbye to Mama she exited her home and started on her way. Looking down at her watch she noticed that she had plenty of time to get make it to the restaurant so instead of catching the train she decided to walk instead.

The afternoon had given way to night and Kagome was enjoying the evening air. Halfway to her destination she noticed a prickling sensation on the back of her neck. Glancing around she couldn't pin point what was causing the feeling. Trying to shrug it off she kept walking but the sensation only got worse. She could feel something just on the periphery of her senses. Coming to a stop she loosened just a little of her powers. There behind her about eighty feet. Narrowing her focus she realized that it was a demon. Kagome's eyes widened and she started to walk faster. Not reigning her power in she felt the exact moment when six more demons joined the first and they were gaining on her. Shit what should she do. One demon she might could handle. Two at the most but not seven. Plus there were so many people around. Walking so fast she was almost to the point of jogging Kagome tried to force her way through the crowd of people before her. For one second she thought that she had given them the slip when she felt something grab her and push her into an alley. Her mouth was covered and she was pulled farther and farther from the street.

Kagome started to panic. Relying on instinct she kicked her leg back striking the knee of her attacker as she bit his hand. The demons grasp loosened just long enough for her to try to twist away. She almost made it until he grabbed her hair jerking her back to him. Kagome spun pulling her hair hard and brought her palms up to her attackers face. Instantly a blast of purifying power poured from her hands. The demon stumbled back yelling in agony as his body turned to dust. For one second the six other demons stood motionless staring at the panting Kagome before they made a move. As the first one jumped to grab her Kagome screamed and tried to run. Her foot sliped out from under her on the wet pavement and she hit the ground hard. The demon flew over her head with deadly claws outstretched. Kagome blinded by terror tried to scramble to her feet managing to only get to her knees and crawl. The next demon jumped on her back driving her back into the pavement with bone crushing force as one of his claws raked down Kagomes right arm. She screamed in agony as fire seemed to travel in it's wake. The demon turned her over roughly. He straddled her thighs and wrapped one clawed hand around her throat.

"Bitch now you die." he growled out as she watched him draw his free hand back.

Kagome could see the gleam of those razor sharp claws. In that moment she knew that she would die in this dark alley all alone. Her heart said goodbye to her family and Yusuke as her eyes began to close. As her lashes feathered onto her cheeks she felt something warm spray onto her face. The world went quite and Kagome took a shuddering breath.

'So this is it.' she thought. 'This is how I die. Funny I thought it would hurt.'

Drawing another breath sound rushed back into Kagome's ears. Blinking her eyes the first thing she saw was the headless body of the demon draped over her torso. Gasping Kagome tried to push the body off of herself. Finding her strength gone Kagome looked up to see what was going on as she heard one of the demons shout. Her eyes locked onto a blur of red. Trying to focus she saw the demon charge at the incoming blur. As they met blood arced into the air as the demon fell to his knees. As one the remaining four ran into together. Kagome couldn't see clearly what happened as they were moving out of her range of view. She heard bodies hit the ground and suddenly the red blur came to a halt near Kagome. Blinking her eyes Kagome got her first look at her savior. The first thing she saw was red. Long red hair draped over a long red trench coat. Hair covered the persons face.

She watched as the person dropped onto thier haunches beside her. A sword flashed before her and Kagome fought down a scream. She gulped as the sword was wiped clean onto the stained shirt of the decapitated demon that still lay on her. The person turned thier head and stood. Kagome saw the person flip thier trench coat open as they resheated thier sword in the scabbard at thier waist. Turning back to Kagome the person flipped thier hair from thier face. Piercing blue eyes met hers as the person spoke.

"Hi sorry if I scared you. My name is Tera Phillips." the now revealed young lady spoke in halting Japanese.

"Hello I am Kagome Higarashi. Could you please help me up."

"Oh sure." said the young lady said as she helped roll the body from where Kagome was still pinned to the ground.

"Thank you for your help. How did you know that this was going on." Kagome asked as she looked at the now mutilated bodies.

"Well I ahh..." the woman closed her eyes and then looked back at Kagome before she said." Shit we don't have much time to talk right now. I promise I will answer any questions you have tomorrow at three thirty in the mall at the noodle cart on the third floor. Just do me a favor. Don't mention me to your boyfriend. He's almost here and he's worried. He can smell the blood. Please don't tell anyone about me."

"I promise I won't tell."

"Thanks."

Just like that the woman seemed to fade into the shadows as she ran farther back into the alley. At that exact moment she heard someone rapidly approaching. Kagome backed into a dark corner and prayed that it was not another demon. As a dark shape hurtled into the open space under a dim light Kagome saw Yusuke. Running to him Kagome leapt into his arms with a happy cry of his name.

Yusuke held Kagome tightly breathing in her scent as he surveryed the carnage surronding them. Bodies littered the alleyway and blood was everywhere. What the hell had happened here. He had been on his way to meet her when the air had shifted blowing the scent of blood to his nostrils. Following his nose he suddenly smelled Kagome and his heart had begun to pound. He didn't know what to expect when he reached his location. In the back of his mind he repeated a litany to himself.

'Please. Kami don't be dead. You can't be dead.'

Loosening his arms, Yusuke held Kagome away from him to check her for injuries. His heart stuttered in his chest as he saw her body covered in blood. Her once white sundress was saturated with dark red blood. Streaks of the same covering most of her exposed skin.

"Shit where are you hurt." he yelled. Not recieving an answer Yusuke stooped to pick her up into his arms.

"Stop." Kagome stuttered as she blinked out of her stutter. "I'm fine. All of this blood is not mine. I think my hands and knees are scraped and one of them got me on the back of my right arm but I am ok."

"Turn around let me see your arm." Yusuke was already turning her as he spoke. Seeing the long open wound on the back of her arm his eyes began to tint red. Sniffing deeply he made sure that there was no poison in the wound before he turned her to face him again. "Kagome I have some things that I needed to tell you tonight and I still will but right now I need you to not freak out. Ok."

"Ok. I trust you Yusuke. I need to tell you something too."

Reaching into his pocket Yusuke pulled out his communicator. Flipping it open the screen instantly showed Botan on the screen.

"Hey Yusuke what's up. I thought that you would still be at home asleep. You wore yourself out on this last little mission so that you could get home to see if that girl had called." the blue haired faery girl said.

"Yeah about that she is right here and that is why I called you. Looks like seven demons attacked her tonight and I need a cleanup crew here now."

"Damn. Ok right away. You coming here to tell Koenma."

"Yeah. I'll be there in a second." Yusuke closed the communicator and grabbed Kagome's hand. "Ok remember that you trust me."

Lifting his hand Yusuke opened a portal to the spirit realm. Taking Kagome's hand he lead her in and right to the waiting room outside of Koenma's office. Kagome sucked in a huge breath and stared at the room. How in the heck did they get here. Wasn't she just in an alley. Blinking she turned wide eyes to Yusuke as he lead her to a couple of chairs in the corner.

"Kagome. I am sorry that I had to bring you here like this. I was going to tell you about all of this tonight. Shit where do I start. Ok so you know that I am a demon well what you don't know is that I am a spirit detective too. See when I was fourteen I died and was brought back by Koenma. He made me a spirit detective. At the time I didn't know about my demon heritage. I trained and I started hunting down rouge demons from the Makai. I have been doing this for years. Well like six. Damn I'm rambling. Sorry"

"Makai. What is that."

"Well there is the Ningenkai where humans live. The reikai or spirit realm and the Makai which is the demon realm."

"Oh so that is why I don't sense many demons at home. Don't worry Yusuke I think that I understand. You can explain the rest later. Just one question though. When you were talking earlier that girl said you were on a mission. Is that where you were when I couldn't reach you."

"Yes. They called me unexpectedly. We haven't been on a mission in some time. I tried to hurry."

"So is there anything else that I need to know."

"Well just uh don't laugh at the kid and I love you." He said as he looked into her eyes to see her reaction.

"What did you just say." her eyes got wide.

"I said that I love you."

"Oh Yusuke." she cried as she wrapped her arms around his neck and kissed him passionately.

"Uhm excuse me." The two broke apart when they heard a voice near them. "Koenma will see you now."

"Please will you tell him to wait just one second." Kagome said.

"Ok but he doesn't like to be kept waiting." George said.

"Yusuke I have something improtant to tell you before we go in. I had decided to tell you that I loved you at dinner and wanted to let you know my only secret. I was a little concerned that you would think that I was crazy. However seeing you secret it's no crazier than my own. You see I can travel five hundred years into the past." she said as she looked at him.

"How."

"Well on my fifteenth birthday a demon pulled me into the bone eaters well at my families shrine. The well acted like a portal and carried me five hundred years into the past. I didn't know it at the time but I was born with a jewel in my body that all demons are attracted to. The Shikon no Tama. Things happened and I accediently shattered the jewel. For the past couple of years myself and a group of others that I met on my journey have been trying to get the pieces before an evil hanyou known as Naraku. We almost had it but Naraku got it first and I had to reshatter the jewel to protect it. So we have had to start all over again."

"Hmm. I can tell that is not the whole story but like you told me you can tell me the rest later. For now we better go see the shrimp."

Standing Yusuke took Kagome's hand and led her to the great door that opens to Koenma's office. Knocking sharply the door was opened by George. Kagome could only stare at the demon before her. She had never seen anything like him in the fuedal era. Looking across the room she could see a desk piled high with folders of all shapes and sizes. She saw the chair turn to the side and watched for a head to pop up. Seconds passed before she heard a voice.

"So what happened tonight."

"Huh" Kagome said as she looked down and saw a short child before her sucking a pacifier. "Who is this Yusuke."

"I am Prince Koenma."

"Your the leader of the spirit world."

"Yes if you don't belive me just ask Yusuke later. Now like I was saying. What happened tonight and why did you bring her here."

"I am not sure what happened tonight because I wasn't there. I brought Kagome here because as you can tell by all the blood she was."

"Hmm. So Kagome tell me what happened." Koenma said as he motioned George to bring in some chairs.

George hurriedly had three chairs brought to the front of the desk. As Kagome was seated she tried to choose her words. It seemed safe to tell him everything about the evening. Omitting that she knew the name of the person who saved her.

"Well as I am sure you can tell I am a miko. As I was supposed to meet Yusuke at seven to eat dinner. Noticing that I was early I decided to walk to the resturant. Halfway there I started to feel a prickling sensation on my neck. At first I ignored it. When it would not go away I stretched my senses a little. I felt the demon. He must have felt me too because suddenly others joined him. I tried to lose myself in the crowd but he caught me and pulled me into an alley. He covered my mouth and pulled me farther in. I paniced. I bit him and kicked his shin. I tried to get out of his grip but he grabbed my hair. I turned and then I purified him. For a moment the others were stunned and then one jumped at me. I fell and he flew over my head. I tried to get up then but I could only crawl. One of them landed on my back and cut my arm. He turned me over and pinned me to the ground. He told me I was going to die. I closed my eyes and then I felt something wet on my cheek. When I looked the demon was still ontop of me but now he was headless. All I could see after that was a blur that cut the rest to shreds and then it was over. I got out from under the demon and Yusuke showed up."

"Hmm. Sounds like that could have been Hiei. George do we know who those demons were yet." Koenma said.

"Here are thier files sir." George said as he handed over several thick files.

"Hmm. Not very strong demons. All of them were D class but all of them were restricted to the Makai. How did they get through to the ningenkai without alerting us. Yusuke I think that you should have Botan look at her wound and then take her home. Come back in the morning and bring the rest of your team. Young lady I think I don't need to tell you not to talk about us."

"Yes sir."

"Good. Now go on home."

Standing they left the office and met Botan in the waiting room. Kagome eyed the pretty blue haired girl as she looked at Yusuke.

"Yusuke is everything ok."

"Yeah it's fine Botan. This is the girl I was talking about. This is Kagome Higurashi."

"Hi Kagome. Sorry I was teasing Yusuke. I overheard him talking to Youko about you."

"No problem. Yusuke could you take me home now." Kagome said.

"Yeah no problem. Look Botan could you contact the rest of the team and tell them to meet me here in the morning. I need to get Kagome home and take care of her arm."

"Sure I can do that. Hey do you want me to take care of her arm for you."

"No I got this." he said while pulling Kagome closer.

"Ok. Well see you in the morning."

Yusuke created another portal directly to his apartment. Stepping through he led Kagome to the couch.

"Yusuke where are we now." she asked as she looked around the sparsely decorated room.

"This is my apartment. I thought that I better bring you here and let you get cleaned up before I took you home. I don't want your mom to have a heart attack or something."

"Oh. Thanks."

"Keh. Let me turn on the lights and take care of that wound." He turned on the lamp near the couch and turned Kagome slightly while he sat behind her. "Kagome I am going to take care of your wound now. Just relax this might feel a little weird."

Kagome jumped slightly at the feel of Yusuke's tongue touching the bottom of the slash mark. He paused for just a second before dragging his tongue slowly up her arm. Reaching the top he rewet his tongue and started over. Kagome shivered in his hold as his tongue skated over her skin. He went from long slow licks to sensuous little flicks as her worked. Yusuke thought he had never tasted anything as sweet as Kagome. Each pass of his tongue imprinted the taste of her on his brain. Before his control could totally unravel he drew away from her and took a big gulp of air. Knowing that his eyes had to be glowing red at this point he closed his eyes and turned his head before speaking.

"The bathroom is right down the hall. Go ahead and get a shower. Just throw your clothes out the door and I will leave you something there to change into while I try to wash your dress." He could feel her eyes on him as he spoke.

"Yusuke are you ok."

"Yeah I am fine. Just tired still. Don't worry about it. Go ahead and get cleaned up."

"Ok." she sighed and did as she was told.

Yusuke's sharp ears heard her enter the bathroom. Moments later the door opened and he knew that she had put her soiled clothing in the hall. Knowing that he needed to find her something to wear for the time being Yusuke got up from the couch and made his way into the only bedroom. Going through his drawers he found a pair of drawsting pajama bottoms and a t-shirt. Walking to the bathroom door Yusuke left the clothing on the floor as he grabbed her bloody things. Moving into the cramped laundry room he grabbed some stain remover and sprayed it all over the dress. Since he had to wait five minutes for the stain remover to work Yusuke decided to fix a snack for Kagome and himself. Moving into his kitchen he rummaged through the pantry only to find that he desperately needed to go grocery shopping. His whole kitchen contained three lone cups of ramen. Shaking his head he filled a kettle with water to heat for the noodles. Setting it on the stove he moved back into the laundry room to put Kagome's clothing in the wash.

Moments later the kettle began to whistle. Grabbing a pot holder he poured the water over the noodles as Kagome entered the kitchen. Yusuke had to chuckle at Kagome's apperance in her borrowed clothing. Everything swamped her. Trying to control himself he gestured to the table and the cup of ramen he had waiting on her. Kagome smiled in appreciation as she dug into the cup with gusto. Sitting to her right Yusuke began to eat his own at a much slower pace. Neither spoke as they slacked thier hunger. Finishing her cup before Yusuke Kagome eyed the extra cup like a starving predator. Chuckling Yusuke pushed the noodles to her. Hearing him Kagome broke out into a grin as she continued to eat.

Finishing his meal Yusuke rose from the table to put Kagome's wet things in the dryer. Passing through the kitchen he walked back into his living area. There he found Kagome already sitting on the couch. "So would you like to watch a movie while your clothes are drying." He asked as he sat beside her.

"Sure." she said as she turned her head to look at him. His features were obscured by his bowed head and hair that had fallen from it's normal slicked back style. Kagome felt the strongest urge to reach over and run her fingers through the dark strands blocking his face from her view. Not being able to resist the impulse she turned her body towards his as she whispered his name.

Hearing his name falling from her lips Yusuke lifted his head into Kagome's waiting fingers.
