Ayumu-<in these>
Midnight, she sits alone. InuYasha sits opposite her in the trees. She watches him sleep away as she meditates like she usually does at night, fearing that if she did differently it would be a serious health hazard for everyone else.
As the group has learned from a week with Ayumu, she is often found meditating, that's when it is best to stay clear of her, or thinking about something unknown to them.
She finally finishes her meditation and slowly drifts off to sleep. She dreams of how she came to be with her half brother, InuYasha. It was no mystery, she was the one to find him but had no idea he kept so many humans for company. She had no personal grudge against humans, in fact she has taken a liking to these humans, but in the past she much preferred to either be alone, which was getting a little too lonely, or to have the company of other demons, like her brother Sesshoumaru, or half demons, like her half brother, InuYasha.
As her dreams faded into the darkness of her mind, she heard a familiar voice calling her. It was Kagome telling her to wake up. She didn't want to wake up but knew better than to keep her waiting. For Kagome could unleash the worst storm of chewing anyone out that she knew possible. At least Kagome couldn't make her wake up like she could InuYasha.
Slowly, but surely, Ayumu opened her eyes, still tired from sleep. A minute later she jumped from the tree to the ground and started to stretch.
"Did you stay up meditating again?" <Here it comes> "You really need to learn to fall asleep earlier!" <Once she starts…> "We need to get started on finding jewel shards!" <…there's no stopping her…> "We still haven't found any since you got here…" <…until she vents all of her anger…> "…and I'm beginning to think…" <…on someone…> "…that you…" <…like me.> "…don't care!!!!!"
<I don't know why I put up with it. *sigh*>
"You're just a goof ball."
"So you've noticed…" Ayumu replied with a nervous grin and matching laugh. "Uh…Kagome?" <I think she's done relieving her anger unto me now…..I hope.>
"What?" <Kagome answered in a neutral tone…She's done…YES!>
"Do you actually know where we're going? `Cause it looks like we're in the middle of no where to me!"
"We're headed towards the village where Kaede lives…Uh…to…get more…uh…bandages." <She's lying. But I better not say anything anyway.>
"Whatever." <She must think I'm stupid or something. Dog's can naturally sense tension, fear…and liars. I wish she would just tell me what it is that we're actually doing. *sigh*>
"Let's get going." Ayumu turned to InuYasha and as they started forward she kept up with him and asked, "What are we doing? I know Kagome was lying."
He didn't answer, just sped up. She stopped and let everyone pass her to take up the rear. <They must be doing something that has to do with me. Or they might just tell me that I don't need to know because it's not important. They treat me like a child. I mean, I may look Kagome's age, or possibly younger, but I am at least 3 times her age!>
Ayumu stared as she saw a village appear slowly on the horizon. She saw a shrine, fields and many, many houses. She saw a few horses, some chickens, but most of all, there were humans. There was not even the slightest trace of even a half demon, except for Kelala, Shippo, and InuYasha.
They reached a house where they went inside and found a short, old lady with an eye patch. Ayumu did not show it but she was appalled by this human's appearance. Everyone sat around a fire in the center of the room near this lady, so Ayumu did the same, all the while looking around.
"InuYasha, why don't you show Ayumu around while we talk to Kaede?"
"I'm perfectly fine here, Kagome. I would like to listen to what you're talking about."
"Nah, c'mon. Shippo, Kelala, You guys comin'?"
"Sure! C'mon Kelala!"
"Fine, I'll come too."
InuYasha showed her the sacred tree and explained, finally, about being pinned there. He showed her the well that Kagome uses to pass through to her era, and the shrine. She rode the horses (without permission), talked to a few humans that were used to InuYasha coming to their village, and teased the chickens in the coop. One particularly clever, but still very stupid, chicken went around her back and pulled out the band that was holding her braid in and had to chase it down to get it back. When she did, she said that she couldn't braid her own hair very well, so she simply put it in a pony tail. "I can get Kagome to braid it when we get back to Lady Kaede's house." She started to walk around when she felt a sharp pain around her neck.
Ayumu looked down to find a necklace of beads identical to InuYasha's. After a second of examining the beads she looked up at InuYasha but by now the pain had grown so bad that it was affecting her vision. She tried to pull it off when a piercing voice that was distant sounding yet so loud and high-pitched that it felt like some one had set fire to her head. "What's the matter?" It asked so loud that she had to clamp down on her ears. She didn't recognize the voice and was starting to panic because she could hardly see. Ayumu looked around and saw the form, that wasn't familiar, but it spoke again in the same voice. "Are you okay, Ayumu?"
She was really starting to panic. <Did this stranger do something with InuYasha? I don't see him> "Who are you?" Her own voice sounded distant but still like her own.
"Have you gone mad? I'm InuYasha!"
<He can't be. He doesn't sound one bit like InuYasha.> She was afraid to ask another question because she already had a headache so bad she wanted to rip her own head off.
"You're not InuYasha. What have you done with him and the others?"
"I AM InuYasha. And the others are right here with me."
"Liar!" She jumped at him claws ready to kill whoever was closest to them. She locked onto the form and attacked its chest. <This couldn't be InuYasha. InuYasha is at least able to dodge me!> She attacked it again and again until she tried to take off its face, that's when it finally defended itself. She was going crazy from pain and didn't care if it knocked her down. Ayumu got back up and attacked once more before she was knocked to the ground by powerful claws in the stomach. She saw the figure come up to her but the pain was too unbearable now and the hit just added to it, and she fell unconscious.
Ayumu didn't know how long she was out but when she awoke she didn't stay dazed for long. Even more figures than before were gathered near the place in which she laid, talking in the same screeching voice as the first one. She had to clamp her hands over her ears immediately. This was a mistake. It alerted the strangers to her consciousness.
They came close to her when she awoke and she backed to a wall. Not only was the pain worse than before but these things had kidnapped her and taken her to this strange place. The closest one was about the size of the first only a little smaller and had darker hair. "Are you okay, Ayumu?"
It was so close that the sound of its voice made her eyes start to water from pain. She stood, trying to get farther away from them, but it wasn't working, they just stood too.
"Are you okay?" it repeated.
Ayumu couldn't stand it anymore. She sank back to the floor. <If I cooperate, maybe they'll let me go and give back InuYasha and everyone else.>
"No." She answered, finally.
"What's the matter?" It shrieked.
"Don't know."
The shape turned back to its colleagues and spoke to them about what she had just said. Ayumu couldn't help but overhear, even with her hands clamped firmly over her ears.
"Do you think it's the prayer beads we put on her?" Ayumu jerked her head up and stared unbelievingly.
"You put them on me? Why?"
"Ayumu," she clamped her ears again, "We just thought to put them on you just in case you act like InuYasha did when we first met."
"I can't put on prayer beads you imbeciles! I'm a demon! InuYasha's only half-demon, that's why you can put them on him!!!"
"Why? Are demons too evil for prayer beads or something?"
"You could put it that way, sure." She said through teeth that were clenched from pain. "Who are you? And, please, speak very quietly."
"I'm Kagome. Don't you remember me?"
"Of course I remember Kagome, you are NOT her."
"There's no use arguing with her. Kaede, can you remove the prayer beads please?"
"Impersonators." Ayumu muttered under her breath.
Before she knew what was happening, there was a rush of pain all over body as if someone were raking millions of daggers through her skin. Right when she thought that she could bear no more, it was over and she passed out, right after getting a glimpse of Kagome, Miroku, InuYasha, Shippo, Kelala, Sango, and Lady Kaede all sitting around a bed in the middle of Kaede's floor.
"I still don't see why she couldn't wear the prayer beads, Kaede."
"She is too much of a demon, I thought that being around humans would soften her heart for the prayer beads not to burn but I was mistaken, Kagome."
"Ow, my head hurts."
Everyone jumped at the sound of Ayumu's voice; they hadn't noticed that she was awake. <Why are they staring at me?>
Ayumu's cheeks grew very red in the single instant that she remembered what she had done. <I guess they think I'm going to kill them or something. I suppose that I deserve it.>
"You okay now?"
She looked up to find InuYasha sitting next to her and at the sight of him her cheeks became increasingly red with every bit of blood that her eyes fell upon all over his clothes.
<Wow, he looks bad. I should apologize to him…or something. I don't get much practice with that. Whew, this might be difficult. He's looking straight at me…but he doesn't look angry…for some reason. Wonder why.>
She stood up without warning and bowed low, hair and head touching the ground. "I am very sorry, InuYasha."
He grabbed her wrist and she looked up into his golden eyes. He pulled her down, back to a sitting position. "You okay now?" He repeated it as if he hadn't heard her at all.
She looked away, at the door. "Yeah."
Ayumu didn't want to look at anyone so she took great interest in her shoes, but when she looked down she noticed something. "Where's my armor?"
Kagome came to sit next to her, too. "We took it off, with great difficulty, so that we could dress your wounds. InuYasha didn't knock you around as much as you did him, but you're still in pretty bad shape."
Ayumu got up, holding her stomach where InuYasha hit her, and walked over to where they had laid her armor. She would rather wear it than leave it sitting around or carry it. So, with great ease, she slipped on the body piece, pulled down the arm guards and tied them, hooked the leg armor to the rest of it, and finished it with the belt. This took her about 30 seconds while everyone stared at how fast she could put the armor on. It had taken them at least an hour to figure out how to and get it off, then they dressed her wounds.
After she was done with her armor, Ayumu sat back down between InuYasha and Kagome. When she decided to take up that same great interest in her shoes, her hair fell over her shoulder. She had forgotten to ask Kagome to braid it. <I can't ask now. I already caused enough trouble without making Kagome sit and braid my hair. She would probably ignore me like InuYasha did. *sigh*>
As if reading Ayumu's mind, Kagome scooted closer and grabbed her hair. Ayumu hadn't noticed her movements and jerked away when she grabbed it. "Would you like me to braid this?" She asked as she indicated Ayumu's hair by lifting it.
Without uttering a sound, she nodded her head and Kagome started.
About half an hour later, Kagome finally finished braiding Ayumu's hair and put the band in it to keep the braid in. When she scooted away, Ayumu stood and swung the braid loosely around her neck. This was the way she usually wore it unless she had it wrapped tightly around her right forearm with a bit slacking before it wrapped for easy movement.
Ayumu turned to Kagome and indicated her hair. "Do you want to braid mine?" She asked. Again, without a sound, Ayumu nodded. Kagome turned her back to Ayumu and she started at it. As she worked, Ayumu reached into pockets on the inside of her leg armor for things like feathers and dried flowers to braid into Kagome's hair. When she was finished, she added the biggest flower in the front, behind Kagome's ear.
After all this, Kagome left to join everyone outside for some…<…lunch? What time is it? I must have been out for about a day. *sigh* My head still hurts.> "Ow." <Whining will get me nowhere fast. I guess I'll just stay here. My wounds still hurt, especially my head. Feels like it's is bleeding. I did hit it when I passed out…I guess it was yesterday.> She delicately felt the back of her head. "Yowch." <I'll have to remember not to do that again. It hurts. At least I know that it's not bleeding. Wonder if anyone will be done with lunch soon? Oh well…if not I'll just go out and sit in a tree as I usually do when they're eating. *sigh*>
She stepped outside but didn't see anyone, so she headed towards the forest to meditate in peace. Out of the blue she sensed a demon coming at her. Ayumu thought to go alert everyone, but it was too late for that. This thing was coming at them fast. <I'll meet it halfway and try to kill it before it reaches the village. If this is its top speed, I'll have no trouble out running it if I absolutely need to.>
Ayumu darted into the forest straight at the demon. <You stupid demon. Always getting yourself into trouble. Just so InuYasha will have to save you. Or possibly get yourself killed…yeah, like that'll ever happen. This demon doesn't even seem that strong. I wonder what he's after?> It hit her all of a sudden. <He's after the Jewel Shards! I have to stop him.> She sped up.
<I can see it. It's a…wolf demon? Ha..this'll be a cinch.> She started laughing so hard that she had to stop and lean against a tree. <I was making all this fuss about…> "A WOLF DEMON! BAH HAHAHAHAHA!!!"
The wolf stopped in front of her. After the dust cleared Ayumu looked up through tears of laughter to see a tall wolf demon, wearing furs, a headband, and had his hair pulled into a ponytail at the back of his head. "What're you laughing about?"
"Sorry," she straightened up to talk to him, tears filled her eyes from laughing so hard. "I was laughing because, before I saw what kind of demon you were, I was actually scared that you might be a possible threat!"
Koga straightened from this insult. "You must be related to Mutt face."
"If you're talking about InuYasha," she said still holding back laughs, holding her stomach that started to hurt, and wiping away a tear that had escaped her. "Yeah, you're right. I'm his half-sister, Ayumu. Who are you?"
"I'm Koga, leader of the wolf demon tribe."
"Whatever. If I wanted a formal introduction, as if that was something to brag about, I would have given you my title. But I didn't, so just shut up and tell me why you're here."
"I'm here to talk to Kagome and InuYasha."
"Uh huh, sure. C'mon." She started to walk. "You know, I was thinking about how I could have gotten away from you if I needed to. Was that your top speed?"
"So what if it was? I could beat you."
"Yeah…I wouldn't bet on it if I were you."
"Ok…I'll race you to the village."
"Fine…start here and first one to Lady Kaede's house is the fastest. Since you don't know where that is, I suggest you just follow my scent. I'm gonna be ahead of you anyway."
They stopped at the tree Ayumu had indicated and got ready to run. "Ready…GO!" As soon as she said it they ran as fast as possible. Koga couldn't even see her move. By the time he took 10 steps, she was already halfway there.
"Slow doooooooown!!!"
Ayumu had reached the village but was going much faster than she was when she raced InuYasha. She tried to stop, headed straight for a villager, but couldn't.
"Move out of the way!"
He was frozen there, and Ayumu was still skidding at top speed. Luckily, InuYasha happened to be near by <…to get me out of trouble again…> and snatched the villager before Ayumu smashed him into the ground.
Ayumu slowed very little before she got to Kaede's house, when she slid right into the wall. "Ow."
A moment later, Koga arrived at the house and helped Ayumu to stand. "Thanks but unless you have a rag, I don't think there's much more you can do." The force from her impact with the wall had given her a bloody nose. <At least it's not broken.>
Kagome came out just as Ayumu started in and gave her the cloth she needed, which she quickly put to her nose--pinching the bridge to help stop the bleeding--and thanked Kagome for the help. Ayumu continued inside as Kagome went out to talk with Koga, just as InuYasha arrived.
"You know, Mutt face, I think that sister of yours is even crazier than you are."
"I heard dat!" They heard her yell from inside, nose still clamped firmly--as they could tell from the stuffy sound of her voice.
"What d'you want you, you mangy wolf?" <Here it comes…I wonder…>
"I came to talk to Kagome, Dog-breath." <About what…About what?!>
"About what, wolf cub?" <YES…will the insults never stop though?>
"About the Shikon Jewel, Sorry-excuse-for-a-half-dog." <That was greatly uncalled for. But, sadly, I was right. He's after the shards. Whew…I crack myself up. I mean…sadly? I would be more than happy to rip this guy apart. I don't know him, so why bother caring?>
"We can't give the shards to you but…"
"…we can sure take yours!" <Kagome is too nice and InuYasha is too harsh.>
"Shut up! I was talkin' to Kagome!" <Uh oh…>
"I don't care who you were talkin' to!" <I better stop this before it starts…>
"Hey, guys…" Ayumu had stepped out of the house. She could speak clearly now, because she had taken the blood soaked rag away from her face. She had obviously stopped the bleeding already. "Would you mind not fighting right now? I have a major head ache."
"Fine…" They both muttered in unison, staring pins and needles at one another.
Kagome walked over to Ayumu and gave her a "Thanks, I owe you one" look. And as a reply Ayumu gave her a "Thanks for the offer but no thanks. I was glad to help" glance.
"Anyway, Mutt face, I was just asking Kagome if she's sensed any shards lately. How `bout it, Kagome?"
"Nope, none since you came. Sorry, Koga."
"It's alright. I'll just have to go look elsewhere. Uh…you might wanna do somethin' about that." He pointed to Ayumu's nose, which had begun to bleed again. At seeing the blood return, she quickly clamped on to the bridge of her nose again.
"WILL IT NEVER STOP?! Kagome, where are dee udder scarves. I need anodder one; this one is soaked through and through."
"I keep them in my pack. Here, I'll get one for you."
"Thanks, I appreciate it. Once I start to bleed, it's hard to get it to stop."
They walked back inside, Ayumu with her head tilted back to assist with stopping her bloody nose from bleeding anymore.
<I thank you, Ichido. Had it not been for you, I probably would have bled to death on that one horrible day of misfortune. You were always there for me, until that accident I started…>
She shook her head, which was a big mistake, to get the thoughts out of her mind and tears out of her eyes. This sudden jerking had made the blood flow increase, which was horrible, because by now, her face had already been covered by blood.
"You shouldn't shake your head like that." Kagome's voice startled her; she had forgotten where she was for a moment. "Here's the scarf. Would you like one with water to help you clean up the blood?"
"No thanks. I'm ok for now. As long as those two don't start up again."
"I know what you mean. We have to put up with it every time Koga comes. It gets really annoying after a while."
"WHAT?!" They heard an exceptionally irritated sounding Koga and InuYasha shout in harmony from outside.
"Nothing!" Kagome and Ayumu screamed back at them.
"Yelling wars…you wouldn't find this traveling around with other demons." Ayumu joked as she "flumped" once more to the ground. She was very good at this, Kagome had noticed. Always goofing around and joking. It wasn't a pretty sight when she's mad. What am I thinking? She always looks beautiful. I wouldn't be surprised if Koga falls for her, she's faster than he is. That's a hard quality to find in a girl.
"Is something wrong, Kagome?"
Ayumu's voice startled her from her thoughts.
"No…why?"
"You just looked stressed or something. Oh well, you said you were fine. And I've learned that there's no reason not to trust you." Ayumu said the last part very coldly, sending a chill down Kagome's spine. She was obviously still upset about the prayer beads and wasn't about to let them forget about it. It's going to be a long month.
"So what's wrong?" Ayumu asked.
"Koga could really fall for a girl like you, and if he leaves for you, well, let's just say that InuYasha isn't one to give proclamations of love very often."
"Ah…Well, I can see your point." She hesitated to think of just the right words to say next. "I will try not to be too attractive and irresistible for your sake, Kagome. Now, are you going to tell me what was really bugging you, or do I have to use cruel and unusual punishments to get it from you?"
"Uh, no. Alright, alright………I was feeling sorry for asking Kaede to put the beads on you, especially since it injured you."
"Ok, Kagome. This is really getting on my nerves."
"Fine, nosey, I was thinking this is going to be a long month because you're not going to let us forget about the prayer beads."
Ayumu stood for a second and eyed Kagome suspiciously before saying, "Your right, I'm not. So be prepared for the worst." <Since she finally admitted it, I won't be so hard on her, but I didn't say I wouldn't get involved with Koga. He's cute, muscular, and the strongest wolf demon I've ever seen, but just for Kagome's sake, I'll play hard to get if he's interested in me…..yeah, right. Like any demon would be interested in a trouble maker like me. I wish. *sigh*>
That evening, everyone said good bye to Koga-except InuYasha, who was too busy trying to look as if he didn't care that Kagome was being nice to him.
<OK…So, let's make a recount of the recent events…My nose is throbbing, but it has stopped bleeding and I don't have prayer beads burning a new hole in my neck! That's the plus side of things. But me? I've always been a pessimist, sooo…Everyone thinks I'm a crazy psychopathic killer out to get them all, my head hurts, my nose is throbbing, Koga left, and well, I'm-to put it bluntly-still covered in blood. Did I mention the hurting head or throbbing nose yet? Oh, well…I better tell someone where I'm going…I might not get into so much trouble that way…yeah right…Why do you think they named you Ayumu, stupid? Because you're a total nightmare!!!(A/N: Ayumu means nightmare!!! :)) what ever…*sigh*>
"Hey, oh, sorry…" She had `snuck up' on Kagome and scared her, "I was just going to tell you that I am going down to the stream for a Quick wash-up. I need it as you can see." To indicate what she meant Ayumu held out one of the sleeves of her outfit to show her the blood. Kagome just nodded and went inside without a word. <Won't even talk to me now, ne, Kagome? Oh, well…Fair enough…*sigh*…I `sigh' too much…*sigh*…grrrrr…>
Ayumu walked to the stream, took a bath, and-much to her satisfaction-was not interrupted by the scent of Miroku lurking in the bushes. (A/N: Couldn't resist! ^_^) But she was greeted-a moment after getting dressed, but before the armor-by a scent that she had never smelled in this area before. She looked around and a man in a snow white baboon suit appeared from the shadows.
"Ah," he said to her, "You must be Lady Inu-Ayumu Yume of the Western lands. Am I right?"
She cringed at hearing her full name. She hadn't heard it in so long, mainly because anyone who called her by it was-well, let's just say they are at a loss for words for the next eternity or so. (A/N: ^_^;; couldn't resist that one either!)
"You are correct. Is there something you wanted or may I be on my way?" Ayumu said this with no intention of doing anything he requested. If he were smart enough to know who she was then he was smart enough to shove off and leave her alone to wallow in her own self pity. <*sigh*>
"Oh, but there is a great favor you can do for me." He gave an evil chuckle that chilled even Ayumu to the bone. "I need to know more about InuYasha's demon form, and you will be the one to find it out for me."
Before she knew what was happening, he lunged at her and shoved a crystal into her chest almost far enough to go through. He jumped back to his earlier position and stared as she staggered around and then focused her eyes on him.
"Why you…"
"Watch your language around me. I am your new master. Now, bow."
Before she could stop herself she was on the ground doing as he said and couldn't move another muscle. All Ayumu could do was sit, stare at the ground bowing, and listen in terror to this man's horrible laughing. <He's going to control me to get InuYasha. I have to do something, and fast!>
