Chapter one

Kagome sighed in frustration as she glared at her most recent homework. She pulled her thick English dictionary close to help her translate the sentence she was on.
It had been over a year since she had first started hunting for the jewel shards back in feudal times with her friends. Since the old school year had come and gone, it was suggested she retake the year with a couple different classes, English being one of them. She was still missing a lot of school, but math and science went by easier since she actually knew enough to keep up. All her other classes were simple compared with English.

“I don't understand why I have to do this!” she finally shouted, exasperated. She slouched in her chair a moment before leaning back over her work, her black hair falling over her shoulder. With renewed annoyance she grabbed her hair and pulled it into a messy pony tail.

Unknown to Kagome, a young girl was watching the Higurashi shrine from the street. She looked to be an average ningen girl in her early teens. She wore a long flowing black skirt and a red bell sleeve shirt. She had a red hair band holding back her back hair and covering her ears. “This must be the place.” She murmured, looking down at a sheet of paper in her hand. The girl took a deep breath and then climbed the steps, trying to be brave. As she walked slowly up to the Higurashi's front door, she pulled out a folder from her shoulder bag she had been given at the orphanage. It had all the info about her, medical Information, the fact that she was 16, the results from the blood tests, and an explanation about why she was there. She hesitated as she came to a stop on the doorstep. To say she was nervous was an understatement. She was terrified about what might happen if the family inside this house, supposedly her only blood relatives, rejected her. This was it, she was about to meet her supposed family at last. She lifted a shaking hand in the growing darkness then hesitated. She had felt something, she didn't know what, but she could have sworn she had felt a presence right behind her. She could have sworn it felt like a cold chill racing along her spine, as if someone was or had been watching her. She turned and glanced into the growing darkness, as if to try and spot the intruder. `Then again, I am an intruder this night,' she thought sadly as she turned back to the door. She trembled and turned to knock on the door after looking around. She heard an older woman's voice call out.

“Hello? Who is it?” a middle aged woman asked as the door was opened. Ether felt the blood rush from her face as she went pale. This was it, this was really it. She was meeting her only blood relatives for the first time in her life.

“Hello Mrs. Higurashi…um…I…” She hesitated and looked away from the woman before her. She quickly held out the folder to the woman, not knowing what else to do or say. `If only someone from the orphanage had come with me,' she thought desperately as the she felt the folder leave her fingers. She closed her eyes and wrapped her arms around herself and shivered.

“Oh dear, you must be freezing. Come in before you catch your death,” Mrs. Higurashi said, motioning for the young girl to enter.

Ether felt some blood return to her face as she stepped through the door and into the warm home of the Higurashi's.

“Now, do you want some tea?”

“No thank you mam,” Ether said as Mrs. Higurashi led the way to the living room. She sat when Mrs. Higurashi told her too, and waited as Mrs. Higurashi opened the file and read through it.

Ether shivered as she watched the color drain from Mrs. Higurashi's face and she blanched as she waited for the scream for Ether to get out. The words didn't come and Ether ventured a look to see what Mrs. Higurashi was doing. She had closed the folder, and had folded her hands in her lap.

They were silent for a few seconds and before Mrs. Higurashi could say or do anything, Kagome came racing down the stairs.

Inu-Yasha had been fed up with waiting for Kagome to return. He still didn't understand why she insisted on returning to her home only to torture herself. Sure he understood that she felt her education was important, but why go through all the trouble of learning something if it made you miserable? He quickly jumped out from inside the well and carefully slid the well door open, noting that the door had recently been greased or something to keep it from making too much noise. It was getting dark out and as he sniffed the air, he discovered a scent that was strange and yet slightly familiar. He frowned and used his speed to rush behind the stranger. The first thing he noticed was the girl looked like a younger, yet different version of Kagome. Her scent was eerily similar to Kagome's, as well as her physical appearance. He stopped, surprised. He wasn't sure if Kagome had a younger sister, he only knew that she had a little brother. He growled softly but then jumped to Kagome's window to warn her of the stranger. “Kagome” he whispered her name since her window was open.

Kagome looked up sharply, still irritated with her homework. She had set aside her English for the time being. “Inu-Yasha, what are you doing here?” she cried out in surprise. She wasn't supposed to return until tomorrow.

Inu-Yasha quickly entered. “There's a strange girl at your front door.” He stated just as he heard the knock and Kagome's mothers answering voice.

Kagome stood up, glad for the distraction. “Then I'd better go and see who it is.” She hurried out her door before Inu-Yasha could warn her. She hurried down the stairs and into the living room. She saw her mother first. The expression on her mothers face surprised her. Her mother looked shocked, surprised, and hurt, but not afraid. Then she noticed the back of a girl's head. Kagome walked around the couch and then sat next to her mother. “Mom, who is this,” she asked lightly with a warm smile. She looked down into her mother's lap where a closed folder was. `What's in the folder?' she wondered as she waited for her mother to answer. After a second, Kagome looked from the folder to the strange girl sitting across from her.

The girl tried to smile, but she was really nervous, so the smile came out terribly shy. The girl that just walked in must have been her half-sister, Kagome. “My name is Ether.” She said simply. She had no last name and she wouldn't take Higurashi as her family name unless they accepted her. `But why would they?' Ether thought sadly as the two stared at her. That was what was making her so nervous, the thought that the only people that were her blood relatives would not accept her. She was a bastard child, people used to say she was a child of a prostitute. Ether didn't believe that for a second, but she knew her mother had not been married to her biological father when she had been born. The orphanage had been allowed by the government to have a blood test taken to find out whom her father was. Itoshi Higurashi had been the only match in hundreds of samples.
“Kagome sweetheart…this is your,” Mrs. Higurashi hesitated a moment. How should she tell her daughter this, that Kagome had a younger half-sister? “This is your sister.” She couldn't fully wrap her mind around the thought that Itoshi had had a child with another woman while they had still been together, but she could accept this girl as her daughter, she had too. Ether had no family or home, and she was Kagome's half-sister so it was easy for Mrs. Higurashi to accept her. It was surprising, but she wasn't the kind of woman to abandon a child, no matter who the mother had been, and especially if the child was alone in the world. `Poor child, alone and afraid. She probably thinks we'll all hate her,' Mrs. Higurashi thought slowly.

Kagome thought she didn't quite hear her mother at first, and then it sank in. She turned her whole attention on the girl in front of her. Ether was clutching at the fabric of her skirt and her head was bowed so her bangs covered her face. She saw a small tear land on Ether's hand and Kagome's heart went to her, Kagome was just like her mother when it came to how soft her heart was. She could imagine what the girl was feeling; just meeting the only family she had, afraid they wouldn't accept her. Kagome stood and went to hug Ether. In the warmest, happiest voice she could muster, Kagome said the only thing she thought would cheer Ether up. “I've always wanted a little sister!”

Ether looked up surprised, tears streaming down her face. She broke up into a big smile and leaned into Kagome's hug. “Thank you,” she murmured tiredly. Now if only she could get enough bravery to tell them her secret. She decided not to, since they had all just met and she wanted to do one thing at a time.

At that moment Sota and Grandpa returned from the park and Inu-Yasha came rushing down the stairs. “You're going to accept her that easily?! You don't even know if her story is true!” He had heard everything and was in a surprised rage. He didn't want Kagome to endanger herself or her family. After all, the girl that had claimed to be Kagome's half-sister was half-demon. He bristled and growled at Ether. He had wondered why her scent was so strange. There had been something nearly indefinable within her scent when he had first seen her. He hadn't been able to place the difference, but now that the stranger and Kagome were in the same room he was able to identify the strangeness. It was the same kind of difference that was in his scent. He sniffed. Yes, it was barely there but he knew the girl was a half-demon, or perhaps a quarter-demon.
Ether paled and tried to find a place to hide quickly. She had never liked being yelled at, or worse, having people yell about her. Grandpa started chanting as he usually did in an attempt to get rid of Inu-Yasha, with no effect.

“Inu-Yasha, Sit boy!” Kagome screamed, making Inu-Yasha do a face plant in the floor. Kagome's mother smiled warmly and lovingly to Ether.

“Welcome to the family Ether.” Ether nodded and stayed quiet, looking around and watching everyone. She must remember to call the orphanage for them to send her, her things.
