Chapter 3
(This takes place after Kagome and Inu-Yasha jump into the well and before Ether decides to jump in)
“Kagome, I don't think you should be so trusting towards Ether,” Inu-Yasha started to say.
Kagome stopped walking and turned to glare at Inu-Yasha “And tell me why I shouldn't?” She demanded her hands on her hips. If looks could kill, Inu-Yasha would have been six-feet under.
Inu-Yasha knew that look, it was the pissed off “I'm going to sit you” Kagome look. “Kagome, she may be a half-demon, but not a kind I've ever seen before.” He said, taking a step back.
Kagome sighed exasperated. “Inu-Yasha sit!” She cried out as she turned and stomped towards the village.
“Kagome wait,” Inu-Yasha yelled as he struggled against the necklace's charm.
Kagome stopped and calmed down. She couldn't stay mad at him since she could tell he was only being worried about her safety. He had never admitted it, but she knew he cared about her. In fact she didn't know if he knew it himself.
Inu-Yasha stood and carefully walked up to Kagome, who still had her back to him. “I know she's your sister, but you should still be careful around her. What if she got really mad and accidentally hurt you?” he asked, his hand stretching out hesitantly to touch her shoulder. He pulled his hand back just before he touched her and he let his hand fall to his side.
“I'll be careful Inu-Yasha, if you promise to try and trust her. She's my sister and I've always wanted a sister.” She said with a smile.
Inu-Yasha nodded and picked up her bag. “Fine wench, now let's get to the village before Shippo has a heart attack.” He said leading the way.
Kagome smiled and then smacked him upside the head. “Don't call me wench Inu-Yasha. How many times have I told you that?” she said as she took the lead.
Inu-Yasha grinned and jumped ahead of her. “I don't remember you ever telling me not to call you wench. Would you like it better if I called you bitch?” he asked teasingly, a rare grin on his face.
Kagome returned the grin and ran to keep up with him.
Sesshomaru watched his brother and the girl race back to the village from where he was hiding. He had heard every word of it and a plan was starting to take shape in his mind. If he could get his hands on the miko's sister then the miko would beg Inu-Yasha to trade the Tetsusaiga for her sister's safety. `That would work. Now I must find this sister of the miko.' He thought. His claws extended slightly as he delicately sniffed the air around them. Kagome's scent always started and stopped around the well for some reason, but he figured it must have been some sort of teleporter between distant villages. He carefully and lightly walked up to the well, keeping his scent and aura hidden under his barrier.
As he walked up to the well to peer down into it there was a flash of light and a young girl in a black skirt appeared in the bottom of the well.
Ether had jumped into the well just moments before, her eyes shut tight because she didn't want to see herself falling from such a height. She remembered hearing Sota's voice as she jumped, but she had been unable to stop her fall. She opened her eyes and peered about. She was in the bottom of the well, except now instead of a roof there was a clear blue sky. She grinned in excitement. She had made it to the past! Now all she had to do was find Kagome and offer her help for Kagome's quest.
Ether reached out to grab the vine latter that was hanging against the side. She made sure her bag was on right and that her locket was under her light blue spaghetti strap shirt. She was sort of hoping to get some sort of tan. Her hair swung from the back of her head where she had tied it back. Before she could start climbing she felt an arm snake around her waist. She squeaked and tried to pull free, her back pressing against an armored and clothed surface as she struggled.
“Stop struggling human,” came a low hiss. The voice sent shivers down Ethers spine. She turned her head and gasped softly at what she saw. She could have sworn she was looking at an angel, except for the ice-cold glare. She stayed silent, used to obeying orders because of all her years at the orphanage.
Sesshomaru kept his gaze on the girl as he summoned his cloud to carry them to his castle. He couldn't pull away from those questioning dark amber eyes. “Are you the miko's sister?” he asked with a deep monotone voice. He couldn't see how this girl could be the miko's sister. His filthy half-breed brother had said the miko's sister was a half demon.
Ether swallowed nervously, he must have meant Kagome. She nodded slowly. She forced herself to look away from the silver haired beauty and out across the sky. She felt instant elation at the thought of flying. She had only experienced flying in open air once before.
*Flash Back*
“Mommy, where are we going?” Asked a four-year-old Ether. Her mother had taken her to a large open field surrounded by a forest.
“We're going into demon controlled land for a surprise.” Cassandra said with a wink.
As mother and daughter entered the demon land, Cassandra dropped her disguise to reveal her golden dragon wings, golden scale patterns covering her body, fangs, a third eye, very pointed ears, claws, and a tail.
Ether fingered her locket, which her mother had given her a few days ago. “Are we visiting auntie mommy?” she asked. Her auntie as was actually just a close friend to her mother, not an actual relative.
“Not today honey. Today, I'm taking you flying.” Cassandra grinned excitedly.
Ether grinned to. She had never gone flying and her mother had always told her stories about it. “Really mommy, we're going flying?!” Ether was jumping up and down now, her chest length black hair bouncing up and down in its ponytail.
Cassandra nodded and lifted her light daughter into her arms. She was always a little surprised by how light her daughter was. She was part dragon, but Cassandra didn't think her little Ether would inherit the hollow bone structure that was common in dragons for flight. “Yes really sweet heart, I'm taking you flying.” She said, giving her daughter an Eskimo kiss.
Ether giggled and rubbed her nose against her mothers in return. “When mommy?” she asked, squirming in her mothers grasp.
Ether giggled and rubbed her nose against her mothers in return. “When mommy?” she asked, squirming in her mothers grasp.
“Now.” That was all the warning Ether got before her mother jumped high into the air and spread her wings, a good 40 foot wing span.
Ether laughed happily, the elation of hovering high above the ground overwhelming her. She squirmed and spread her arms as if she were flying. “Mommy, will I be able to fly one day?” she asked, her dark amber eyes glittering happily.
Cassandra sucked in her breath worriedly. To be honest she didn't know. There were so few dragons now a days that a half-dragon child was unheard of. Most dragons mated with each other to keep the blood thick. “I think you will sweet heart.” She said encouraging, giving her daughter a smile.
Ether returned the smile and looked back across the ground as her mother glided over the demon-controlled land.
*End Flash Back*
Sesshomaru watched as the girl's eyes light up in excitement as the cloud carried them on. He frowned very slightly, barely showing through his emotionless mask. How was it possible? He had to make sure this was truly the sister of his brother's bitch. Most creatures would have been terribly frightened being so close to him. In fact he was surprised she wasn't shaking or had fainted. Even that miko that traveled around with his half-brother had been somewhat frightened by his presence. “Why are you not frightened of me?” he demanded coldly.
Ether looked back surprised. She had forgotten that she was being held by the angelic demon. “Um well…I have no reason to I guess.” She answered truthfully. She had no idea that this demon could kill her in a second, or that he had threatened the life of Inu-Yasha and her sister several times.
Sesshomaru changed his grasp from around her waist to around her neck. “You will be afraid of me, and you will tell me the truth. Are you really the miko's half sister?” He hissed into her ear. His fingers brushed against a thin chain as he loosened his grasp on her neck. He pulled at the chain and the girl screamed.
“Don't touch that!” she cried out, actually pulling away from him and onto the edge of the cloud. Her hands were around her neck, protecting the chain that was holding her locket.
Sesshomaru was intrigued now. He swiftly reached out before she could stop him and moved her hand so that he could grab the chain and slice it off. The locket fell out of her shirt and into the palm of his hand. He instantly felt the power change in the air around the girl. He looked up and for once a look of great surprise crossed over his face. “You are a dragon?” Well, that explained how she was a half demon and he couldn't originally sense it. He had been expecting her to be a lower half demon, and had least expected her to be half dragon.
Ether tried to cover her cheek, but it was impossible, the scale pattern was much too large. “I am.” She stated simply. There was a golden spiral on her cheek, her claws had extended, a golden streak had appeared in her hair, her ears had pointed, and her fangs had lengthened. Not only that but miniature golden wings had appeared on her back, to small to fly with, but they were there.
And for once in his life, the great Lord Sesshomaru was made speechless.
