Chapter 24

 

“When will you come back?” Ether asked as she gave her new friend Sarah a hug. 2 month had passed since her first flying lesson, and Sarah was getting too close to her due date. From what Sarah figured, if she gave birth in the past it was possible something could go wrong in the time stream. Both she and her mate were from the modern time so both she and Richard thought it would be wise to return to the future for their dragonling to be born.

“As soon as we can,” Sarah said as she returned the hug as best she could. She felt her baby kick suddenly and Ether giggled as she felt it too. “I'm really sorry for leaving the way I am, but it's for the best. You've developed fine and as long as you keep up the meditating and mental shields I taught you, you should be fine around humans,” Sarah said as she pulled back.

Ether nodded and wiped her eyes on the handkerchief she had with her. She smiled and gave Richard a hug too before returning to Sesshomaru's side. “Take care.”

“You too squirt,” Richard said as he jumped into his air, grabbing Sarah's heavier bag as he did. Sarah blinked and then growled in irritation.

“I can carry my own stuff Richard!” She said as she pushed herself off of the ground with a little effort. She called upon her youki to push her a little high so she could glide after her mate.

Richard laughed teasingly and shook his head. “In your condition? No way!” he said as he sped up, playing keep away.

Sarah rolled her eyes and kept at a slow even pace as her mate flew ahead and then ducked behind her. “Fine, whatever,” She mumbled. She knew if she strained herself she might initiate contractions too soon.

 

Ether sighed as she watched her two dragon friends fly off, her hand on her own stomach. There wasn't much of a bulge yet, but she could tell her scent was changing. Her mate wrapped his arms around her and she leaned into his chest. “Richard said he'd be back after Sarah was settled,” Sesshomaru said as Ether looked up into the sky, as if trying to see the two dragons.

“Sesshomaru…what will happen when our pups are born?” Ether asked, using the term pups since Sesshomaru was more fond of it then babies.

Sesshomaru frowned. Sarah had insisted on returning, saying she had thought about it long and hard. She had tried to explain, saying both she and her mate were from the future and thus so should their child. “I…am not sure,” He said carefully. He didn't like the prospect of his mate leaving his time to have their pup in the future, where he probably couldn't go. It was confusing to be sure. He was from the past, his mate from the future, so their children could be from either if they so chose. What should they choose? `I can't let my mate just leave…I don't think I could stand it,' he thought as he unconsciously held Ether tighter against him.

Ether's thoughts were similar to Sesshomaru's. She couldn't just leave the past in order to have her babies in the future, but then again she wanted to give birth in a hospital where there were doctors around to make sure everything went right. Then again there were healers here and from what she had been taught Demon pregnancies and births weren't as difficult as human ones. Should she stay in the past, possibly making it so her child was born in the past as well? She sighed and shook her head, effectively grabbing Sesshomaru's attention.

“I don't know what will happen either. Sarah didn't tell me anything. I'll ask Richard when he returns,” She said as she rubbed her growing belly. Sarah had explained that most demonic pregnancies only lasted 4 to 5 months. It had been two for her so far.

 

Richard sighed as he and his mate landed a few feet from the well. For two months he had been training Ether, Sarah had been teaching her the life of a female dragon, and Sesshomaru had been assisting where he could. Now he had finally convinced his mate to go back to the future instead of staying here. He hesitated as Sarah sat on the lip of the well awkwardly. “Sarah…” He wanted to tell her he wanted to be with her during birth, but his instincts, which had always been too strong, would tell him to protect his mate from whatever was hurting her. It would be best if he wasn't anywhere near her during the time unless he wanted to kill someone.

Sarah reached out and placed her hand on Richard's lips. “I know love…and you need to return to continue Ether's training. She's learning really fast and needs your help more then ever,” Years of wisdom and understanding surfaced in her eyes and Richard was reminded of their age. He sighed and pulled Sarah up into a hug. They had been together for nearly a century, had been trying to have a child for almost as long. They weren't the oldest dragons of their time, but they had gone through a lot more then others had.

“I'll come back every few days to check on you,” He said as he let Sarah go. He would escort her back to the mansion, make sure she was settled, and then return.

Sarah nodded, her hair falling over her shoulder slightly. She had pulled it up into a ponytail. She was wearing a loose dress shirt and comfortable pants from their time for the return. Before she could say anything voices called out to them. The dragons looked back and Sarah smiled as she saw Ether's sister and the Inu-hanyo approach them.

“Hey! We thought we'd never see you guys again!” Kagome exclaimed as she panted after running up. She had felt their approach and had raced to the well to meet with them. Over the last couple months Mimi had been relaying messages between her and her sister, but she had still wanted to hear about how her sister was doing. “So, what's going on?” She asked, noting the bulge in Sarah's shirt where her stomach was.

Sarah smiled happily. “I'm heading back home. I'm too close to my due date and Richard I think I should be in our time for the birth,” Sarah said as she sat and then turned so her legs were dangling into the well. “Ether's fine by the way, her pregnancy is progressing fine and I'm sure she will be visiting as soon as she can,” Sarah said as she waved and jumped into the well.

Richard sighed, waved and followed his mate with her bags.

Kagome frowned and then shook her head with a smile. “Well, at least everything is alright,” She whispered as she thought about her sister. Boy was her mother upset when she had found out Ether had mated and had become pregnant.

 

*Flash Back*

 

Kagome bit her lip as she stood in the well house with Inu-Yasha. How was she going to explain things to her mother? Her mother knew she and Inu-Yasha would mate, but her mother didn't know about Sesshomaru and Ether…and then add the fact that Ether was pregnant. `Why did this have to happen?' Kagome thought as she recalled Mimi telling her about the recent events surrounding her sister. She had to tell her mother now and she wasn't looking forward to it.

Kagome sighed and felt a reassuring hand on her shoulder. She gave Inu-Yasha smile before turning and leaving the well house to find her mother. This was going to be interesting. “Mama, are you home?” Kagome called out as she entered the kitchen through the back door.

“I'm in the living room Kagome!” Her mother called back. She had just finished vacuuming the room when Kagome had called out for her.

Kagome smiled and then nibbled on her lip before entering the living room, Inu-Yasha right behind her. “Mama…there's something I need to tell you,” Kagome started to say only to have her mother hug her.

“I already know about you and Inu-Yasha! Remember, you told me before you left,” She said with a big smile.

Kagome nibbled her lip harder and took a step back. “It's not that mama…it's about Ether,” She said as she sat down on the couch. Inu-Yasha leaned against the wall silently as Kagome's mother sat down next to her daughter.

“What about Ether? Is she alright? Has something happened?” Mrs. Higurashi asked worriedly as Kagome hesitated.

“Mama…Ether…mated with Sesshomaru after her birthday,” Kagome started to say slowly. Her mother looked surprised at first and then contemplative. She didn't say anything for a few minutes so Kagome continued. “And she's…she's pregnant.”
Mrs. Higurashi froze and looked at Kagome closely. “Are you sure?” She asked carefully.

Kagome nodded and watched as her mother stood and left the living room, a serious expression on her usually calm face.

 

*End Flash Back*

 

Kagome frowned. During the three days she had stayed in order to catch up on her homework her mother had been strangely quiet and when asked wouldn't say much. She had heard her mother call someone, probably the orphanage to ask a few quiet questions, but other then that she didn't know what was going on with her mother. Inu-Yasha told her, her mother was trying to find out about demon pregnancies, and that she had called what seemed like a demon doctor.

She shook her head and felt Inu-Yasha lift her up. She grabbed the front of his hitoe when he started running back to the village. She worried about her mother, and about Ether.

 

Ether stomped her foot in irritation. Sesshomaru, the nerve of him, had just told her she needed to eat more. `I just ate enough to constitute as lunch and dinner put together,' she thought as she glared down at her mate. “I'm not hungry!” she said in a raised voice.

Sesshomaru took another bite out of the chicken that was mixed into his rice. “You need the sustenance for the pups,” he stated simply as his mate stamped her foot again and refused to sit down to continuing eating. “Sit back down and stop acting like a child.”
This set Ether off even more. She fumed and turned to walk out of the dinning hall only to be picked up and gently dropped back onto her cushion. She glared and hmphed as Sesshomaru took his seat again to continuing eating. “I told you I'm not hungry! I've already eaten enough!” She exclaimed as she heard Rin's soft giggles. Those giggles made her relax slightly. Rin's presence, when she remembered to keep the barriers up, was soothing most of the time. Sarah did say that once she got used to keeping the mental shields up they will become a natural part of her and she wouldn't have to think about it so often. Ether sighed and glared at the food for a moment before picking up her chopsticks and eating a few more bites of food. She swore she couldn't eat much more, she was going to burst as it was. “I can't eat anymore Sesshomaru,” Ether said tiredly. She yawned suddenly and rubbed her eyes.

Sesshomaru silently set his own chopsticks down and looked at his yawning mate. “You need rest,” he stated more to himself then to her.

Ether stuck her tongue out and jumped to her feet in defiance of her mate, who was being way to protective and possessive of her. “Hey Rin, let's go out and pick some flowers!” she said with a big grin. Rin nodded and happily ran after Ether, who was already out of the dinning hall and racing towards the front entrance.

Sesshomaru almost sighed in irritation, one hand rubbing his temples. He had been expecting mood swings, but not this badly. Even when Saran and Richard were here, Ether would jump between sulky to angry and then to happy. `I will be glad when this is over,' he thought to himself as he stood and headed towards his study to look over some documents that awaited his attention. Most were from neighboring Lord's congratulating him on finally mating, and asking him when the celebratory feast would take place. `One more annoyance to take care of,' he thought. He had already planned for the feat to take place at the next full moon, 5 nights away. Ether's gown was already made, Lilly having done an exquisite job, Ether had been instructed on who the guests were that were coming, and how to act around them. Things were going well in that general direction, now all Sesshomaru had to worry about was planning for the pups. He grinned as he thought about his future heirs. He and Ether had already found out she was having multiple pups, the castle healer already confirming it. What they didn't know was how many. `What will they look like?' he wondered as he looked out the window of his study and towards the closest field where he knew Ether and Rin were. `Richard said that when a strong demon and dragon mate the child tends to stay half of each even after the coming of age…' he wondered if they would have his mates third eye or his crescent moon, whether the pups would have silver or gold hair, and if they would have wings or not. If he hadn't been as well trained as he was, he would have been pacing in anticipation.

He glanced out his window again before returning to the return letters from the Lords that would be coming.

 

`Stupid Sesshomaru, mating with that…that harlot dragon instead of me!' Lady Sakura thought as she stood inside the dark palace, awaiting the hanyo she had agreed to meet. `If I can't have him, no one will,' she thought as the hanyo Naraku made his appearance.

“Lady Sakura of the Southern Lands, what a pleasure to have you here,” He purred out with half lidded eyes. His hands were in his sleeves, Kanna to his left.

Lady Sakura grimaced behind her fan and she glared at Naraku. “Sesshomaru will be having a feast to honor his mating with the dragon in five days,” She stated with malice. “Is everything ready?”

Naraku chuckled and nodded. “During the feast we shall capture the young dragoness. Everything is ready as you have planned,” Naraku said, grinning evily.

Sakura shivered and nodded. “Good. Be sure you do not mess up and you will have what you want,” she said as she turned on her heal and left the hanyo's palace.

As Sakura left Naraku chuckled darkly. He had every intention of following Lady Sakura's plan, only instead of killing the dragoness, he would force mate her nullifying the mating between her and Sesshomaru. Sakura could have the inutaisho if she wanted, but he wanted to cause as much pain as he could to the absurd demon lord.

`The plan will work, as long as the dragoness is not pregnant,' he thought to himself. It was highly unlikely the girl was pregnant after only being mated for a couple months. He knew most females didn't become pregnant until half a century or more of trying. `Too bad Kanna can not look into Sesshomaru's castle,' he thought as he turned and walked back to his room. With all the shields, protections and warding spells around that place he wondered if he would even be able to sneak in.

 

Ether laughed as Rin brought her yet another bouquet of flowers. “They're beautiful Rin,” She said as she made them into another wreath to place on Rin's head. She herself already had a wreath and she figured Rin wouldn't stop picking flowers until there weren't any left in the field.

Rin grinned hugged Ether carefully around the belly. “Will it be a girl or a boy?” she asked as she felt a light kick.

Ether shook her head and winked. “I'm not sure. I might be having a boy and a girl, or two boys or two girls. We'll just have to wait and find out,” She carefully lowered herself to the ground and helped Rin make the next wreath.

“Rin want lots of sisters and brothers! Lots and lots, then Rin will never get lonely!” Rin exclaimed as she threaded another flower into the braid just as Ether had shown her.

Ether paused and looked at Rin questioningly. “Rin…do you consider Sesshomaru and myself your parents?” She asked carefully and casually.

Rin nodded and smiled up at Ether. “Yup, though Rin knows to only call Sesshomaru Lord Sesshomaru,” Rin paused and looked at Ether with big pleading eyes. “Can I call you mommy?” She asked softly, almost to soft for Ether to hear.

Ether smiled lovingly, dropping the flowers she had been holding to give Rin a hug. “If you really want too, you can,” She said with a happy smile. She worried inside about what Sesshomaru would think. Rin was his ward, he might not like Rin calling her mommy. Then again, was she ready to be called mommy? `It would get me used to the idea,' she thought as she picked the flowers back up, chatting with Rin as they made flower wreaths together.

Sesshomaru watched from the edge of the field. His guards, whom he had assigned to protect Ether whenever she left the castle, bowed in respect and went back to their posts. Sesshomaru watched the guards go and returned his attention back to his mate and ward. `Rin…considers me her father?' he thought wonderingly to himself. He had never been…fatherly to her. He had given her life with his fathers sword, allowed her to follow him on his travels, had given her a home in his castle, but he never thought he had treated her like a father would. `I do not mind if Rin thinks in such a way, as long as she remembers the rules of the demon world,' he thought to himself.

As he continued to watch the two, acting like a real mother and daughter should, a small smile crept into his facial features. His body relaxed and everything seemed perfect.

 

Though he didn't know an angry demoness and evil hanyo were planning to take that happiness away.

Wow…I finished this the same day I posted chapter 23. That huge writers block and now this? I guess this is me trying to apologize for not posting a chapter in so long. This chapter was a whole lot easier to write.

 

Just to let everyone know, Sarah was pregnant 2 months before she went to Ether. 2 months after Ether's coming of age she headed back to her time to have the baby. Ether is now 2 months pregnant. It all works out so there! Any ideas on names for both Sarah's babies and Ether's?
