Rin danced happily around Sesshoumaru. Today was the first day that he had taken her to `help' him patrol his territory. She wasn't nervous that she was in the presence of the Demon Lord if the Western Lands. As far as Rin was concerned, the demon sitting by her was the one she thought of as a father.

Sesshoumaru looked down on Rin with a fond and watchful eye. If she didn't stop prancing about, she would fall off his cloud. The next time she came dancing around him, he grabbed her wrist and set her on his lap. His golden eyes stared into her large hazel orbs.

"Now, Rin, you know you are not to be running around while we are in the air. I do not think you want to fall off."

Rin nodded obediently. "Yes, Lord Sesshoumaru. Rin won't do it again. I promise!"

The Demon Lord sighed inwardly. "That's what you promised me ten minutes ago, Rin. Now you will have to sit with me for the rest of the time."

If she fell off…

Rin pouted. "Yes, Lord Sesshoumaru." More pouting.

He smiled, a quicksilver smile, a smile that was only shown to Rin. "No, Rin. I don't want you falling off, now would I?"

The six-year-old yawned hugely, snuggling into him. "No, Lord Sesshoumaru."

As Rin fell asleep, Sesshoumaru wondered. This human child had him wrapped around her little finger. Rin had cared for him after he had been hit by the full force of the Tetsusaiga, while most humans would have taken advantage of his weakened state, and killed him on the spot. She even brought the fish that she had been beaten for staling from the village river. Later, that same village had been slaughtered by a pack of wolf demons, Rin along with it. Sesshoumaru had found the girl laying dead on the road, mauled to death. He did not think that she was deserving of such a fate at such a young age, she who had cared for him when no other did. He had brought her back with his Tenseiga, and she had journeyed with him ever since.

Since then, she grew on him, and he started to care about her, as a father would have. Rin awakened human emotions in him, like pity, compassion, and even love. He only showed these emotions around her when they were alone, though. If any demon knew that he cared for the child, she could be kidnapped-or even killed-to gain leverage against him. That was why he was so nervous about taking Rin with him to patrol his territory. Anyone could see him while he was in the air.

`She needs to be with her own type,' Sesshoumaru thought. `She could forget all about me, and live her life as a normal human would. Without demons at every corner, scaring her half-to-death. But who would I send her to?'

He thought back through his long memories, looking for suitable humans to send her to. There weren't very many choices, as he had killed many of them. One, however, was a possibility. The young priestess whom he had seen many times valiantly protecting a young kitsune-the miko that traveled with his miserable half-brother, InuYasha.

`She would make a good mother to Rin,' Sesshoumaru thought as he sped off to the village that the miko and her group often frequented.

Taadaa!
