A Prayer for Loneliness
By Paint-Brush
Bared on your tomb
I'm a prayer for your loneliness
And would you ever soon
Come above onto me?
-Nymphetamine by Cradle of Filth
So this is how it is. But... why? It didn't have to end this way. I could have stopped it from ending this way. But it doesn't change anything, this is just how it is. But...
The dappled sunlight that filtered through the vibrant green leaves of Goshinboku cast pale dancing shadows across Higurashi Kagome. The distant noises of traffic, and the smoky haze of Tokyo only served to remind her that she was here, in the present and all alone. Her hands were still, her long fingers curled and tangled around a beaded charm rosary, as she stared at the base of the ancient tree. A wry, but saddened smile played across her bleak features. It was ironic, really, that it was to end there of all places, that he was to rest there forever, just as Kikyou had once intended. Kagome looked up, almost expecting to see her hanyou boy, his white ears splayed to the side, his eyes shut deeply with sleep as vines tangled around his body as he slept through the years, the holy arrow that had been lodged near his now cold and silent heart.
"Kagome?"
She turned around to the direction of the noise, shocked out of her reverie. A worried expression clouded her face as she realized that it was her Mother who stood at the sliding doors of her childhood home. She attempted to flash her mother a reassuring smile, but she was sure that she failed miserably. Damn. Why was her mother awake at this time of the morning? Kagome had wanted to spend her precious time here alone, as this was the only place she could bare to be for any long period of time, other then in her dreams.
"Yes Mama? Is anything wrong?"
Kagome watched indifferently as her mother walked slowly toward her eldest daughter. She could see concern shining through the deep brown eyes, and maybe even relief. Kagome could almost bring herself to feel guilty for causing her mother so much worry, but somehow she couldn't bring herself to care. Her mother carefully noted the tear stained cheeks of her daughter, and the unmistakable glaze of sorrow and nightmares. Kagome's hair was had never been so unkempt, the greasy strands of blue-black hair dirty with sleep and neglect.
"You've been asleep for days, Kagome. Why don't you let me make you something? You must be hungry."
Kagome was hungry, but she hardly had noticed it. She let the guilt slide a bit, and it managed to hollow out to an ache in her stomach. It was amazing, really, that after all those days of drifting in and out of sleep, she still felt tired. She wanted nothing more then to just sleep, to sleep forever, lost in her dreams of happiness, even if she knew that it was merely a mirage, an imitation of true contentment. It was better then being here, left alone to deal with the past. Almost without realizing it, Kagome let her head slide in a short nod.
Her mother raised a pale, weathered hand the wipe away a strand of hair that had managed to dangle over her daughters eyes. Her eyes tried to catch Kagome's, but her daughter refused to meet her mothers gaze. With a knowing sigh, her mother turned around and began to walk back to the house.
"Just come in when youre ready," was all that Kagome managed to hear as her mother disappeared into the kitchen. Kagome let out a slow, labored breath that she had been holding. It did nothing to ease the tension in her body. What have I become? she thought ruefully, What would he say if he could see me here?
How could I have let any of this happen?
Kagome turned her gaze once again to the base of Goshinboku, and she felt the tears that she had thought had been spent creep out to brush over her lashes to run down her cheek. He was there, she knew, his skin long rotten away, his kimono perhaps only a few pieces of torn cotton. His bones dark with lack of oxygen and light. Empty. All that time, and she had never known, he had been there, just waiting for her to realize. Even when he had been safe and alive in the past, just a jump down a well away, he was there, knowing, waiting. Expectant. How could she not have known? Why didnt she realize that it would end like this? Was she that naive? Her fingers twirled the rosary in her hand, the familiar shape and texture was almost comforting. It reminded her that she was here, alive but broken, while he was there, dead- poor mortal- but even in death he had managed to drag her soul down with him.
Kagome turned around without a word. Her footsteps padded soundlessly, the memory of a dead man shadowing her steps.
This is how it is, and I couldn't stop it...
