Oh and this is dedicated to Anime Fan. Without her I would never have had the courage to submit one of my creations

The battle was over.

The casualties counted. They had won, but at what cost?

Many of their friends and allies had been wounded and had even died. Lord Sesshoumaru, for some unknown reason, had been uncharacteristically generous and used Tenseiga to restore those who had perished. They all now hugged those precious to them, grateful for the second chance they had received.

All were happy.

All except one.

A scream ripped through the bloody battlefield.

"NNNOOOOOO!!!!" Her voice only echoed the pain and grief she felt.

Not even Tenseiga could rescue the hero of the battle. The one who landed the fatal blow that destroyed that vile hanyou, Naraku. The one who had jumped in the way, taking a fatal blow meant for her.

He who had started off as a hated hanyou that not even his own blood could look at without feeling ill. Accepted by neither human nor youkai. Alone until a miko befriended him a perhaps in her own way cared for him, as he did her. Only to end up betraying each other due to the greed and lust of a thief who had given up his humanity to absorb the demons who came to eat from him. He ended up pinned to a tree for fifty years while she died, her soul reborn into a girl five hundred years in the future.

Then as if destiny had not quite finished with these two souls the girl, Kagome, fell through an old well on her 15th birthday and found the silver-haired inuhanyou pinned to the tree. In the events that followed a jewel thought gone was released from her body and the inuhanyou was awakened only for him to kill the demon attacking and then to try and take the jewel that had started this whole mess in the first place. The jewel as if guided by Fate's sneaky hand was shattered by an arrow of Kagome's when she tried to rescue it. All activities, battles, there after were to collect the shards that had scattered across the land and in one case the land of the dead. Friends, allies, enemies, power and a father's gift were found and made. A small pack to find the shards and to destroy an evil almost as vile as the jewel itself. In all this the hero, Inuyasha, gained that which he had never gotten to experience before, friendship, acceptance, and love. Though it was confusing while dead miko had been resurrected, but just before this most final of battles he had come to a decision.

The night before the battle he had whisked Kagome away and did one of the hardest things he had ever done, he opened himself and his heart completely. Told her of his true feelings, his fears of the upcoming battle, the future, and of the rejection he thought he would get if when he asked the most difficult question of his life to the one person he cared for above all other.

"Will you be mine? Will you stay with me and be my mate? My partner in all things."

He looked into her eyes to see the one thing he could never figure out, tears.

His head dropped down feeling his own tears build up. "I'm sorry Kagome, forget I said anything...

Rejection?

He never got to finish what he was saying as arms wrapped around his neck and a pair of soft lips came into contact with his own.

His eyes opened to see Kagome's liquid brown ones looking back at him.

The contact broke. "Kagome?" He couldn't say anymore his heart threatened to leap from his chest.

"Oh Inuyasha, yes I will gladly stay with you. I want nothing more then to be yours."

His youkai howled, his human side cried, but the hanyou got the best of the deal.

Throughout that night he presented his claim and she, his goddess, his angel, accepted.

Now he lay in the middle of the vast battlefield, his head in the lap of the one he loved and swore to love for all time. Dying.

Again with the tears, but this time he understood.

He told her he loved her and that he was sorry.

She told him to stop talking and to save his strength. That help was on the way.

She held him as he faded away leaving only an outer shell to be buried.

All around them there where tears. Even Kouga, his long-time rival wept at the loss of a
fellow warrior. Sesshoumaru was even present bowed his head.

"You have honoured our family even when we cast you out. You are worthy... brother."

Kagome was inconsolable her screams of loss making even the hardest of hearts weep.

And it was that heart that responded.

"Miko, why do you make such noise? The hanyou is gone. Good riddance, one less youkai to deal with." A neutral voice asked her within the depths of her mind.

"How could you. Inuyasha was a good kind being. How dare you?"

"If you care for him so much why not use the jewel to bring him back"

"I can't. If I did it would be a selfish wish and then the jewel will not be purified."

"Which is more important to you, saving your love or purifying the jewel?" the voice
asked.

"Inuyasha, but he wouldn't want me to put everything we worked for to waste, by not
freeing the jewel. If the jewel remains in existince more people and youkai will be
harmed and even killed."

"That is true; you speak with a wisdom beyond your years child. What if I could bring him back for you, even as Tenseiga failed to do I can succeed, but the cost is great?" he voice continued with a curiosity filling it as it progressed.

"Who are you?" Kagome asked, not daring to hope to save her love.

"Look beside you."

She looked down to see the very jewel they were discussing leaning next to her leg.

"You're the jewel?" She asked.

"Yes. Your heart has made this possible. I am able to bring him back, but the cost of which you may be unwilling to pay." The jewels haunting voice overwhelmed her.

"Do it." Kagome stated aloud. Kouga stood behind her, he drew his blade. She had cried for some one to end it so she could be with her Inuyasha.

"Are you sure? You haven't heard the cost for this?"

"Yes, I'll do anything. Just do it." She cried aloud.

"Very well, just remember I will come and collect on that." The voice said and faded away. She was surprised. It almost sounded regretful.

Kouga swung down, Kagome looked up with surprise. Time seemed to stop.

Then everything seemed to rewind.

When it stopped Kagome was on the battlefield, she had just shot her final arrow which aided Inuyasha with the final blow. She saw Naraku look at her and then smile that evil smile he had.

"I may be defeated, but I won't go alone!!!" He screamed as he sent off one final blast before he disintegrated.

She saw the blast coming for her, but knew she could never move in time.

"KAGOME!!!!!!" Inuyasha hollered as he ran to her.

"No, you said you would save him." She cried.

Inuyasha got to her just in time to use his body to shield her. He held her tight, waiting for the blow that would surely kill him. But it would be to protect his mate and faintly scented pup just beginning within her. He buried his nose in her hair so he could take in her scent once more.

Moments became, minutes. But it hadn't hit him. What the hell?!?

Inuyasha turned to see what had happened.

Standing not five feet from him was a figure wrapped in a hooded cloak. He caught this person's scent, it was familiar. But he didn't recognize it. He watched as they pulled their sword out of the ground and they turned as they sheathed it. Inuyasha looked at the belt and saw Tenseiga and Tetseiga, his own blade, on this person's hip.

"Who are you" He asked.

"You will know one day. Kagome?"

Kagome popped her head around Inuyasha’s body.

"The promise has been kept. Now you will have to keep your end of it."

The figure again addressed Inuyasha. "Enjoy it while you can. Live each day to the fullest. You never know when it will end."

"Your name. I want to know the name of the one who saved me and my mate." He demanded as he stepped closer.

The cloaked one stepped back.

They cocked their head to side for a moment before answering.

"Shikon Tybirian. My family name is of no consequence." And the figure then walked away.

The figure then stopped again and turned to everyone. "You have all done well. His reign of terror is now over. Depending on how things progress peace is a definite possibility, but it will take work. Good luck."

The cloaked one then turned away and vanished into the forest surrounding them.

Inuyasha turned to Kagome. "What were they talking about?"

"Nothing Inuyasha." Kagome said as she hugged him. They leaned into each other but as their lips met they were surrounded by everyone.

There was hugging and hollering. Inuyasha and Kouga came face to face.

"Good job on your part, you did pretty well for a wolf."

"You didn't do so bad yourself. For a half dog." Kouga started to turn away, but stopped

"You mated with Kagome."

Inuyasha was immediately on the defensive. "Yeah, I did. She's mine now, she accepted on her own."

"Congrats, but if I ever find out you've harmed her I will hunt you down and kill you, then I will take her as my own. Understood?"
........

"My brother will not harm his mate. It is accepted by both of them. And you will not place threats towards my brother, is that understood?" Sesshoumaru said as he came to stand between them.

"Yes Lord Sesshoumaru." Kouga replied as he bowed and he went off to congratulate others in their battle.

"You didn't need to do that. I had it covered." Inuyasha said as he turned to walk away.

"Inuyasha." Sesshoumaru said.

"If you're here for Tetseiga forget it." Inuyasha yelled at him.

"That's not what I'm here for."

"Then what? Come to bother me for being a disgrace to the family line, because I'm a hanyou. I don"t give a rat"s ass...

He stopped in mid sentence. Sesshoumaru was standing before him, but there was something different about him.

"Inuyasha, today in battle you showed great power and courage. The last time I saw something like that was when our father battled his way to your mother and yourself."

"Yeah so what."

"Inuyasha, today your blood showed through and the demon is strong. My previous thoughts were incorrect. You are not a worthless half-breed. You are as worthy as any of our line."

"Sesshoumaru what are you saying?"

"Inuyasha, son of Inutasho. It is time for you to return and reclaim your birthright as prince of the Western lands. And as my brother."

He was shocked. Sesshoumaru accepted him. He must be dreaming.

He watched as Sesshoumaru pulled a medallion out from under his armour and placed it around Inuyasha's neck. Inuyasha looked down at it, it was the crest of the house of the Lord of the Western Lands.

"You are welcome to come home." Sesshoumaru said. It still sounded cold, but not quite.

"Thank you brother." Inuyasha replied.

He had a home, he belonged. And he was with the one he loved.

Kagome watched as Inuyasha was first in shock and then joy that seem to glow off of him. He wasn't alone any more.

A cloud shadowed over Kagome's head. A voice whispered in her ear "The promise has been kept, remember I will come and collect."

It set a shiver down her spine, but she shook it off as Inuyasha wrapped an arm around her. He smiled down at her leaned down and kissed her.

They then went to join in the celebration around them.

Hey all, this is my first ever public submission. I’ve always kept my writings to myself. So please review, good or bad, it doesn’t matter. If enough people like it, it may become a prologue which was it’s original intention.

Again, Anime Fan. Thanks, I couldn’t have done this without you ;)
Until next time, Happy reading!!!
