A Reason To Cry

An Inuyasha fanfic by Tora

The battle was over.

The wind was carrying the scent of blood and miasma still, but the air was clear of sounds. Not a breath, not a scream, nor a crashing blow. Minutes before those sounds had filled his sensitive ears. They'd driven him to make his final blow, and it had taken it's toll on his prey.

Those sounds still rung in his mind as his golden gaze scanned the scene before him. The bodies of his friends lay still, unmoving, and their scents made it clear that they wouldn't move in the future.

He held the one thing that was most precious to him in his bloodied arms, and she too lay unmoving and cold. He'd given up on speaking to her still form moments earlier.

Tears blurred his vision as he came to a realization. He'd saved the villages around them from future torment. He'd killed off the one enemy that others had found impossible to kill. The jewel had become whole and black and the wish used to strengthen him, but apparently the wrong wish had been made; for both Naraku and the Jewel of the Four Souls were gone.

But everything he ever cared about had gone with them.

Miroku and Sango lay defeated. Kirara curled against her master's body in a bloody mess. Shippou curled in similar fashion in Kagome's arms.

And Kagome in his.

His mind focused and he cryed out, tears falling freely from his eyes. He didn't hide them this time, for there was no one to see them. His cry could be heard for miles around, and it echoed and filled the battered countryside.

He only stopped when his voice went raw, and sat back rocking the body of his 3 year companion; the center of what was his life. Now it was gone, and he had nowhere to go. Silver hair slipped over his shoulders and brushed her face as he sobbed like a child.

Then the wind shifted, and on it came one familiar scent.

He didn't move immediately, only stopped his sobs and took a slow, deep breath. He inhaled her scent once more before mving slowly to lay her back on the ground.

Picking up his sword, Inuyasha stood to meet the one who approached. He turned, silver bangs hiding his eyes, but not the tear trails that fell from them. He faced his brother, lifting his arms and dropping his sword at his side. The clang of the rusted blade against the ground did not phase either demon, but the gesture was clear. Inuyasha stood awaiting his inevitable death at the hands of his older brother, and this time he wasn't going to fight.

He didn't look up when he head Sesshoumaru unsheath his sword, nor did he when he heard him move around him to the back. Quick shot to the juncture of his neck from behind. At least he meant to make it quick.

Inuyasha did flinch when he heard the sword swing, and braced himself for the final blow.

But it never came. Instead came 4 more behind it. He did look up then, and saw the tiny human girl standing on the hill and watching. Why would he bring her along if he meant to kill?

Inuyasha spun on his heels in time to see his brother walking towards him, and to hear the sudden gasping breaths of the ones he called his friends.

"You've earned your place, so consider this a gift. Just stay out of my territory." He spoke swiftly and left, leaving his half-brother to gape at the scene before him.

Miroku and Sango slowly sat up, Shippou and Kirara bound to their feet, and Kagome coughed a bit, sitting up and moving her arms as if she'd just discovered them.

His golden eyes came to life once more, and leaked tears of a different kind.

"Thank you..." he whispered in a choked voice, knowing his brother would hear, even though their backs faced one another.

The battle was over.
