A Room in New York
If a pedestrian on the street below were to remove his hat and look up, squinting into the setting sun, he would be able to see a middle aged couple sitting in silence in their small apartment. Just above the din of urban city noise a few lone notes of a tinkling piano intermix with the sounds of the traffic on the busy street below, people hurrying home from a long day at work, and a TV turned up too loud in the next apartment. The man, probably around the age of 25, sits in his worn red easy chair. He is not completely relaxed, almost pensive, hunched over the evening paper and worried about the bills on the table. From the crisp, stark white dress shirt and poorly patterned tie he is wearing, it is safe to assume that he is a business man, home from another grueling day. His neatly kept silver hair, which challenges the length of his wife's, reflects the light in the room, seemingly making him the center of attention. His wife, sitting opposite from him at the piano is trying to look distracted as she lets her mind wander. She could not be older than 20, her long dark hair, beautiful ivory skin, and flashy red dress convey this. She looks as though she has just returned home from a party. Absent mindedly, the woman prods at the piano with one finger, almost hoping that it will give her the answer she needs.
The couple's undersized apartment is made smaller with the amount of furniture that is forced inside. A strong oak door is the only point of entry and exit, and a large rectangular window, often kept open for ventilation, is across from it. The walls, a light gold color, are decorated with paintings. Between the piano and the undersized easy chair sits a table. About the same color as the door, the table offers nothing more than a place to put papers or unimportant objects. To a passerby on the street, this couple seems to be having a normal night after work. However, they are facing one of the most difficult problems that couples can, infidelity.
The brightly colored walls were a sharp contrast to the dark feeling of tension in the room. Kagome had come home late tonight, just late enough for her husband to confirm his suspicions that something was wrong. Inuyasha had been home for about forty-five minutes before she walked in the door late, again, from a supposed girl's night. Needing reassurance, he rose and steadily crossed to the sturdy oak door, to welcome his wife home; he had not seen her since they had parted ways after breakfast that morning. She was flushed and seemed uneasy and hesitant to greet him, as if she were just now beginning to feel guilt for some previous actions. He kissed her rose tinted cheek and stepped back so she could enter. She half-smiled and went into the room while exclaiming what a wonderful evening it was, trying to use the weather to distract her husband from her current state. Inuyasha asked her about her evening, hoping to disprove the theory already forming in his mind. She fumbled about in her purse for a bit, before answering the question. He noticed that she did not look him in the eye.
Inuyasha was not a fool; he knew what had been going on for some time now, but seeing her home, late again, smelling dank and musky, the distinct smell of aftershave, made everything completely clear. It was as if all the pieces of their abstract half-life had finally come together. Kagome was seeing another man; Inuyasha was not good enough for her anymore. He knew things would never be the same between them, and that their broken relationship could never be repaired. Slowly, a wall was being built between them. A wall made of steel and iron, hurt and angry emotions. It was becoming so high that Inuyasha could no longer jump to see over it. Kagome was lost to him now, and he did not know what to feel. Should be angry, hurt, or betrayed? Or, should he feel relief because they would no longer have to maintain their charade and false normality of their lives? Inuyasha decided to confront her before the wall crept up any higher.
Kagome was startled when he called her name and snapped out of her reverie of the past evening. Shamefully turning from the piano to face him, she responded. Inuyasha told her that he knew everything and could no longer continue to be with her anymore. He then watched the changing emotions play across her face: shock, confusion, anger, and hurt. She started to speak, but then could not, as if her conflicting emotions were parallel to the thoughts in her head. The only sound that could be heard was the laugh track from an old sitcom playing on a TV in the next apartment. Speaking suddenly, she asked him how long he had known, was he angry with her, and finally, through her tear bleary eyes, that she never meant for it to end this way. Inuyasha, having more time to come to terms with his feelings, was able to respond quickly. He told her that he had been expecting it, with both of their busy lifestyles it was natural that eventually one of them would stray. He made sure to remind her that this did not ease the pain any. Kagome looked slightly relieved that he was not furious with her, and ashamed that she had been the one to break the relationship. Inuyasha told her that she could continue to live with him until she was able to move in with her new man. He was unable to conceal the harsh tone in his voice, and Kagome flinched at his words. Sniffling, she rose softly and went into the bedroom. A few moments later Inuyasha stood up, shut the light off, and closed the window, leaving the street below slightly darker than it was before.
Author's Note: This is my first time writing fanfiction. I've been a connoisseur for many years, and I've always wanted to try my hand at it. This story was an inspiration from the pictureRoom in New York, by Edward Hopper. Hope you like it. :]
