Chapter Five
Inuyasha awoke to someone banging at his door. He growled softly and then stumbled out of bed. He was having the most peculiar dream about his brother, and was upset that it ended abruptly. He yawned and stretched. Then he grabbed his pants that were lying on the floor and quickly got dressed. Whoever was at the door was persistent. “I'm coming,” he shouted, as he hit his foot on the side table in his bedroom. He gritted his teeth and swore; this was not how he wanted to start his day.
Inuyashas' house was small and comfortable and he liked it dark, as he stepped into the hall yawning. Entering the living room he didn't draw back the curtains, he just wanted to yell at the person banging on his door. It was too early to deal with anyone and hoped that it wasn't somebody annoying, like a salesman or Jehovah Witness. The living room opened up into the kitchen and Inuyasha glanced on the white microwave, and noticed it was eight in the morning. “This better be good,” he grumbled, as he walked past the beige couch.
Unlocking the door, he slowly opened it. His eyes widened and anger swept through him, “What the fuck are you doing here?” he growled. Never in his life did he expect his father to show up. He was definitely not having a good morning.
Inuyasha couldn't look at him, he unmistakably looked a lot like Sesshomaru, more so than him. With a stern look, Inuyasha just stood there, and was almost tempted to slam the door in his face.
“Son, we need to talk.”
Oh great, this is all I need to add to my already fucked up day! Inuyasha growled, while looking at his father. “There's nothing to talk about!”
Mr. Takahashi stepped into his son's home, ignoring the growling protests. “Inuyasha… is that anyway to treat your father?”
Inuyasha slammed the door and crossed his arms over his bare chest, his ears twitched in agitation. He carefully watched his father observe the house and could not contain the growl that rose deep in his throat. This was his mother's house: a human woman who spent most of her life working, to keep it. Why was he here now after all these years?
“My father is dead,” Inuyasha said disheartened.
Mr. Takahashi sighed and ignored his sons' comment. Instead, he sat down on the sofa expecting Inuyasha to sit next to him. He growled slightly when his son just stood there with an angry scowl upon his face. “You know I loved your mother, but I couldn't be with her.”
Inuyasha's eyes widened, horrified as to what he had heard. “How dare you come here and claim that you loved my mother! Where were you when she needed you? Where were you, after all these years? You said that you couldn't be with her! You sure the hell didn't have a problem in that department. What happened? Did you find out that you got her pregnant and left, not wanting the responsibility being a father to a loathsome half-demon?”
Mr. Takahashi yelled defensively, “It wasn't like that! Now, sit down!”
Inuyasha sat in the recliner next to the love seat where his father was currently sitting. “Enlighten me father.” He said unemotionally. “Please tell me why, after all this time, you picked today to stop by?”
Mr. Takahashi held his head down in shame. He'd wished he could answer that question.
In addition, if his wife found out that he had stopped by he would probably end up an un-mated man. He was too old to ponder about what his wife thought and regretted that he abandoned Inuyasha as a son. He sighed in exasperation, this was hard for him to come here, and looking at Inuyasha did not help. His son looked angry, hurt, betrayed, and he knew that he was the cause. He didn't deserve respect, and he wasn't going to ask for it. He smiled, trying desperately to break the ice. “You know, you remind me of her… there are similarities I see in you.”
Inuyasha remained silent, and prayed that his father would just hurry up so that this nightmare would be over. In addition, he could just go on with his life hoping he would be able to continue the relationship he had with Sesshomaru. However, the way his father was glancing at him, it was going to be longer than he anticipated.
Seeing that his son was not going to comment, he decided to continue. “I was already mated, when I met your mom. There was something special about her, and her scent drove me mad with lust. She used to serve at the restaurant, where I loved to go and have lunch at. Slowly we began to talk and then we decided to go out on a date. I knew it was wrong for me to deceive her, but we fell in love. However, it was not long before my mate found out about our tryst, and our pregnancy. My mate being a powerful dog demon-ness demanded that I stopped seeing her, or she was going to end their lives: meaning you. I couldn't let that happened, so, I made an excuse and left. There wasn't a single day that I didn't stop thinking about the both of you, and was afraid that my mates' threat was real.”
Inuyasha chuckled, and shook his head. “I can't believe I am hearing this crap! What is the matter dad, too afraid to stand up to your woman! Is that what you're telling me…that you abandoned us, because you were afraid of your mate!?”
“Yes… and I let money and power persuade me to leave you and your mother. I also believed that my mate would have caused more harm to you and your mother, more so than I…would. I was a fool.”
“What's changed?” Inuyasha asked. “I mean, if you're so afraid of your mate, why are you here?”
Mr. Takahashi smirked. “Because, I don't care anymore what she thinks. She can't hurt you, and if she wants to leave me…than so be it! I've wasted enough of my life not knowing my son.”
Inuyasha groaned. He was pleased in a way than he never expected to feel: wanted and welcomed by his father. It was uplifting and yet, utterly disturbing. Hi dad, welcome to my world…oh, and by the way, I am in love with your son. The thought was unwelcoming as he sank deeper into his seat.
“Inuyasha, are you okay?”
Inuyasha just stared at his father as if the man had grown two heads. No, he was not okay and wondered if it was too early to raid the liquor cabinet in the kitchen. He decided that it wasn't and stood up abruptly. “I am thirsty… uh…, would you like something to drink?”
Mr. Takahashi sat there quietly, curious as to his sons' sudden retreat. He watched him grab a bottle out of the cabinet. “Son,” he called out. “I'll have what you're having.”
Inuyasha nodded, and grabbed two glasses. He hoped that the whiskey would be strong enough to shake his frantic nerves. Returning to the living room he placed the glassed down on the table, opening the bottle he began to pour his fathers glass, and then his. “Is there anything else you want to tell me?” Inuyasha asked, hoping that he did not regret his question. He did not think he could handle any more surprises today, and it wasn't even nine yet.
Mr. Takahashi glanced at his son, and then at the glass. He quickly swallowed the warm liquid and then quickly poured himself another glass. “Yes… I know about you and my son.”
Inuyasha frowned, and then downed the liquor. He knew that he shouldn't have asked, as he looked at his father with a stunned expression. “Wha…what…? How…?” Inuyasha asked with a shaky voice. Was it that obvious?
Mr. Takahashi laughed, “I have a nose Inuyasha…. And the way you two looked at each other at the party was obvious that you two had a relationship and were very much in love.” He paused, and took another sip of his beverage. “I have to admit, I'm not that upset about it….”
He is not upset.
“What do you mean, you're not upset!?” Inuyasha took a deep breath, “I mean, Sesshomaru and I are in love… and this does not bother you!”
“No, actually I am quite relived. I was always wondering why he kept turning his betrothed down. He would say: That he didn't care if he was disowned—he would never marry Kagura. Now I know why…I just chose not to say anything about it…. Until, now….” He said as he leaned forward in the chair. “Yes, it is awkward, but in all actuality you two didn't even know that you were related. I mostly blame myself—I cannot go blaming you two for falling in-love. You two are innocent in this matter, and I will not try to stop it! As crazy as that sounds.”
With steadfast hands, Inuyasha lifted his glass to his mouth and drank the alcohol in one breath. He quickly leaned forward and grabbed the bottle to refill his drink, when a strong arm grabbed his.
“Slow down, I assure you that things will be different from now on. There is no need for you to drown your problems away in the whiskey.”
Inuyasha closed his eyes. Today was not happening, and he continued to tell himself that this was all a nightmare and he would wake any moment now. However, as surreal as it was, he knew that he was already awake. His father's acceptance was too easy to stomach; there was no slandering, or being called a freak. Nothing and it unnerved him greatly. He thought about Sesshomaru, and how he would feel that his… no, their father knew about them. Although, as dysfunctional as it was, Inuyasha felt some relief to this scenario, almost as a huge weight suddenly was lifted off his shoulders. The way his father looked at him and smiled, was somewhat comforting. This new feeling was something he could get used to, and he would definitely try.
