A Snow Capped Romance

Chapter 1: At The End Of August

I lit lanterns to light up all these words.

Looking back I know it’s what I’d die for.

And through all this life.

Smashing away all this strife.

A friendship I paint. Untouchable.

It was unseasonably cold for the 29th of August, a bitter cold wind making it abundantly clear that the change of season was well on it’s way. The façade of summer seemed to be falling apart, as splashes of vivid reds and yellows began to bloom among the endless sea of green. The small collection of restaurants and convenience stores that made up this small rural town had already begun to decorate and advertise for the coming cold weather, which only served to hammer the point home. Even the demeanor of the people who lived here was changing, the youthful exuberance and energy of summer giving way to the gruff complacency that often came with colder times.

All of this and more might have been the subject of a young Inuyasha’s thoughts…

Had he not been watching the most important person in his life preparing to walk right out of it.

She stood before him that day, wrapped in a Kimono the color of the very sky that stretched over them, cloudless and infinite. Her hair was completely let down, each strand lazily reaching out in the breeze. It would be the way he saw her in his dreams from then on; that small rueful smile that played across her lips, the way her cheeks were flushed pink from the frigid air.

Kagome Higurashi was an earthbound angel, and he was damned if he deserved to be anywhere near this woman.

And alas, here she stood. The place she had been standing at his side for 8 years. His best friend and only real confidant. The inseparable twins. And in about ten minutes, that was all going to change.

“I’m going to miss this place.” she had said quietly, her cloud gray eyes fixed on a point in space.

Inuyasha hadn’t said anything, his own thoughts preoccupied by what his eyes were taking in, attempting to take in every detail of her beautiful face as it took on a wistful air. He still couldn’t believe she was leaving, but there were no tears. He needed to be strong, so that the last real image she would have of him was assured, maybe even smiling.

It was then that she had turned to him with an unreadable expression on her face, and with one simple action blew all that to hell.

Her lips had met his with uncertainty, a clumsy, chaste pressure that lasted no more than a few seconds.

Of course, that was all it took to break Inuyasha right in two. The minute they hade made the transition from friends to something more, was the last minute they really had to enjoy it. He remembered letting out a shaky breath, pulling her as close as humanly possible and burying his face in the crook of her neck, basking in her presence for as long as possible.

She had gasped a little at the sudden contact, her small fists bunching themselves in his shirt as she nuzzled him back in reciprocation, her eyes shedding small tears that fell from her eyes and onto his skin.

After what couldn’t have been more than a few minutes she pulled away, though he supposed a century would have been too soon for him to let go. It was then when he realized that she had put an envelope of some sort in his right hand.

“Please don’t open this until you can’t see me anymore.” she had breathed, her voice choked and strained with emotion. After one final look she opened the door to the black limousine that waited at the curb and stepped inside.

And so he watched that vehicle as it passed the last street light and finally disappeared over the hill, clutching the proffered note as a desperate climber might cling to the face of a cliff as his throat grew tight with repressed sobs.

He took a deep shaky breath. Counted to ten.

And opened the letter.

“Mr. Takahashi, you have a call on line two.” his secretary’s voice chimed in through the intercom at his desk.

Inuyasha blinked as the voice broke him from his reverie, sighing he pinched the bridge of his nose and rubbed in exhaustion, picking up the letter and putting it back in the little black box in his drawer.

Picking up the phone and pressing the button for extension 2, Inuyasha got back to his life, the one Kagome had left 6 years prior.
