Meanwhile farther north Naraku was hiding in a cavern. He had summoned Kagura to return to him. He had kept himself hidden even from her until now. He knew her true hearts desire was to break free of him, though as long as he was at full power she couldn't. Kagura swooped in on one of her feathers and landed on a few feet from him with a gust of wind.
“Kagura,” he began in a deep evil voice. “There is something I need you to do for me.”
“Yes.” She agreed.
“It seems InuYasha and his friends have a new travel companion. I want you to kidnap her and bring her unharmed back here to me.” He ordered.
`What would he want with one of them?' Kagura thought to herself.
“This girl would prove to be most useful to me.” He began. “It seems an ancient demon older than time itself has possesses her every night. If I absorb her at that time then it will increase my power indefinitely. Now go!”
Kagura plucked the feather from her hair and took to the sky. She was growing increasingly tired of taking orders from Naraku. Kagura looked behind her to see Naraku's insects following her. `He's always watching me.'
Sarah tossed and turned under her cover. Despite all her efforts she could not fall asleep. She decided to walk outside to take a look at the night sky. She walked a few yards from the hut and sat down in the cool grass and took in the fresh night air. She had been outside for sometime and finally became sleepy. She was about to return inside the hut when the wind pick up around her. She stopped and looked around but saw no one. A moment later she felt a rush of wind coming at her and saw flying blade tearing the ground. She turned and tried to run but they seemed to be coming from everywhere. In the confusion she wasn't paying attention to her footing and fell. Her head hit a rock and she was out.
`I thought this girl was possessed by some all powerful demon.' Kagura though to herself. `She didn't put up any kind of a fight. Never the less I should get her back to Naraku.'
Kagura pulled her feather and dragged the girls' body up with her as she mounted it. She made her way quickly over the land back to Naraku. Upon her return Naraku was there waiting patiently. She dropped the girl at his feet.
“Well done Kagura.” He commended her for following through with his orders.
He kneeled down to look at her. Her blue eyes began to open slowly. She stared up at a man who had both human and demon shaped body. His eyes narrowed as he realized she was nothing more than a mortal girl. He looked back up at Kagura with an angry expression. Sarah turned to see a woman dressed in a white kimono her hair was jet black, but her eyes were red. Eyes like she had never seen before.
“She's nothing more than a mortal!” Naraku scolded Kagura as if it were her fault. He turned his cold glare back to Sarah. “Tell me girl, where is the demon that possesses you each night.”
Fearing of what might happen to her Sarah was eager to answer. She hoped that if they realized the demon no longer existed then maybe he would let her go. “She's gone.” Sarah struggled to say.
“What do you mean gone?” Naraku's eyes began to blaze with anger.
“She was destroyed.” Sarah whispered with fear.
Naraku turned and walked back towards the darkness of the cave. “Kagura bind her hands. If I can't use her to become more powerful then I will use her for bait. I will destroy InuYasha and his friends.”
Kagura bound her hands and ankles and at the request of Naraku took her away from the cave. Sarah was placed in a clearing and a small barrier was put up around her. It allowed nothing to enter and nothing to exit. After a couple of hours in this state Sarah leaned over and lay down in the grass. Her body was becoming cramped from being in such a position. She drifted in and out of sleep until the next morning.
As day broke in Kiade's village InuYasha began waking everyone up when he could not find Sarah. The group searched only to find the scars in the earth left by Kagura.
“What would Naraku want with her?” Sango asked concerned.
“Akuma.” InuYasha said. “He wanted Akuma. He probably thought he could absorb her power from Sarah while she was transformed.”
“But how would he even know?” Sango asked.
“I have a pretty good idea.” InuYasha said as he looked up to see a few of Naraku's evil insects lingering behind.
“We have to hurry.” Kagome said. “Naraku might kill her if he realizes she will not change.”
They set out following the evil insects northward.
Meanwhile Sesshoumaru was sitting under a tree at the edge of a stream watching Rin splash about. Jaken was standing on the bank scolding her for splashing him though it did not stop her. Sesshoumaru picked up a familiar scent on the wind. It was distantly faint but unmistakable. It was Sarah's scent. He rose to his feet and walked into the breeze staring in the distance, debating on if he should follow. Then any doubt in his mind was crushed as Kagura's scent began to linger with it. Jaken noticed Sesshoumaru's reaction and tagged behind him.
“What's the matter Mi-Lord?” he questioned.
“Jaken stay here with Rin.” He commanded and took off in a flash of light.
It took Sesshoumaru no time at all before he arrived at Sarah's location. She was, for the most part unharmed, only a few scratches and bruises. He became increasingly angered at the sight of her there. Helplessly bound and apparently in great pain. Kagura stepped out from the shadows holding her fan well in view.
“This doesn't concern you.” She said.
Sesshoumaru drew his demon sword. “Release her.” He commanded.
“Why Sesshoumaru are you so noble now?” Kagura asked. “You fight for the well being of humans just like your younger brother, InuYasha.”
Sesshoumaru knew that Naraku was close. He could smell him. He attacked Kagura sailing through the air. She countered his attack with her Dance of Blades. Sesshoumaru diverted them with his sword. Sarah sat up watching the battle. Sesshoumaru coaxed his way over to the barrier that enclosed her. With one strike from Tokijin it was broke.
“How?!” Kagura shouted.
Sesshoumaru gave a laugh. “Do you not recall the origins of this sword?”
Kagura narrowed her eyes in her glare at him. `I am no match for Sesshoumaru.' Kagura realized. She attacked again with her Dance of Blades. Sesshoumaru countered with his Dragon Strike. Kagura's eyes grew large as his attack consumed her attack. She pulled a feather from her hair and retreated as quickly as she could.
Sesshoumaru watched her sail away and the power of his attack ended. He turned around looking down at Sarah. He reached down and severed the ropes with his claws. He scanned the horizon but there was no one there. He began to walk away when he heard a voice that could always stop him dead in his tracks.
“Wait Sesshoumaru,” Sarah said struggling to keep up. “Are you just going to leave me here?”
Sesshoumaru looked deep into her longing blue eyes. His heart longed for her company. Curiosity about her had plagued his mind for sometime, though he would never admit it to anyone. At that moment unknown to either of them Kanna was hiding in the edge of the trees. She held out her mirror and started to draw Sarah's soul in. Sarah became light headed and Sesshoumaru reached her just in the nick of time before she fell. Sesshoumaru sent his whip of light in the direction of the mirror shattering it and Sarah's soul returned. But she was still unconscious.
Later Sarah awoke being held bridle style in Sesshoumaru's arms. She looked up at his expressionless face as he continued to walk. She heard a little girls voice coming from up head.
“Master Jaken, Lord Sesshoumaru has returned!” Rin said as she ran towards them.
Sarah struggled to stay awake, but she was so dizzy. She closed her eyes and again became unconscious. Sesshoumaru laid her body down in the soft moss at the edge of the stream. Rin and Jaken approached and began to examine the girl.
“Who is she Lord Sesshoumaru?” Rin asked.
“Another worthless human.” Jaken muttered under his breath. Sesshoumaru gave him a warning glare.
“She's hurt.” Rin said. “I'll get some water to clean her up with.”
The draining of Sarah's soul had taken a lot out of her. She slept through the following night. The next day she awoke to find Rin and Jaken staring at her. Sarah felt self-conscious sitting up and returning the stare. She saw the little girl who looked like a doll with her straight black hair and the little demon who looked like a toad.
“Hi! I'm Rin.” The little girl spoke. “This is Jaken.”
“I'm Sarah.” Sarah replied. Her head was killing her.
Sarah looked around but she did not see Sesshoumaru anywhere. Rin grabbed some berries she had collected earlier and handed them to Sarah.
“Here eat these. They are very sweet.” She said.
Jaken sat studying the girl. He wondered what her story was and why had Sesshoumaru brought her back. Sarah sat in silence as Rin chatted on and on about Sesshoumaru. Every now and then Jaken would give her a `shut your mouth' look, but Rin ignored him as usual. When Rin was done praising Sesshoumaru she asked Sarah about her story. Sarah explained how she came to be in this era.
“So you're like that girl Kagome?” Rin asked.
“Yeah, except I don't know how to get back home.” Sarah replied.
With food in her stomach Sarah's headache faded. She spent the rest of the day with Rin. The two of them talked and Sarah played in the stream with her. Jaken was thankful there was someone else around to distract Rin. He needed a break from her endless taunting.
It was not long before Sesshoumaru returned. He had been away searching for traces of Naraku. But he was long gone. He stood in the distance watching Sarah playing with Rin. Jaken took notice of his presence and raced over to him.
“Did you find Naraku?” Jaken asked.
“No. He is gone.” Sesshoumaru replied.
“Shall we continue tracking him today, Mi-Lord?” Jaken asked.
“At once.” He replied. “Rin, we are leaving.”
Rin looked up to see Sesshoumaru turning and walking away. She had not noticed his return. “But Lord Sesshoumaru, what about Sarah, can she come with us?” Rin begged.
Sesshoumaru paused and looked back over his shoulder. “She can do as she wishes.” He replied and kept walking.
A smile came to Sarah's face. The two of them raced to catch up. While they travel Sarah began to teach Rin a lullaby her grandmother had taught her when she was young. Sesshoumaru enjoyed her voice. It seemed to sooth his soul, a feeling he had never had before, a calming peace that took him in.
