Chapter Four:
“And that's the Big Dipper.” Kagome pointed to a group of stars from the great celestial expanse. Kouga had just learned the basics of her futuristic home and was dying to know more. After explaining practically everything from her school to the kitchen sink to the interested wolf, Kagome was running out of ideas.
Her teachers had always told her class that they would indeed use everything they learned in school in real life when they grew up. It was at times like these that Kagome couldn't agree more.
“The Big Dipper, huh?” Kouga inquired from his position on the grass-covered ground. They were both lying down, arms behind their heads, gazing up at the millions of shining lights.
Kagome nodded.
“It really looks like a giant spoon, doesn't it?”
“Hmm…only after staring at if for a while.” Kouga shrugged. Kagome giggled.
“Fine then. I'll show you one that's actually worth learning about.”
“Worth learning?”
“Mmm hmm. See that one way over there? The brightest one?”
Kouga scanned the dark sky with piercing eyes.
“Ah, yes. That one?” He asked, pointing to the one he thought looked brightest.
“Yes. That's the North Star, Polaris.”
“Po-La-Ris.” Kouga tried the strange name out on his own lips.
She nodded her approval.
“They say that if you follow Polaris, you'll find home. If you ever get lost, that is.”
“Oh, well, that is interesting. I'm going to tell my wolves about that one.” He smirked, content with this pleasing new information. “Ginta will definitely be happy to hear it. He oftentimes gets lost.”
The young priestess-in-training burst into fits of laughter.
“Ginta-san does?” She was finally able to ask, her eyes close to spilling out tears.
“Yes, I've ordered Hakkaku to stay with him wherever he goes, just in case.” He shook his head.
“Yes, I guess so. But…people in my time aren't able to go new places without bringing…maps with them.”
“What?”
“Well, yes.” She shrugged her shoulder. “We're not able to smell our way home like you are.”
Kouga nodded. “I know. That's because you're ningen. However, even the humans of this era are able to go places without first consulting a scroll…er, map?”
Kagome smiled in approval of his pronunciation and memory of all the new words he'd learned tonight.
“Even so, Kouga, it's very considerate of you to protect Ginta-san like that.”
Kouga blushed and fumbled through his brain for words.
“Well…the three of us grew up together. We're what you could call…best friends. If that doesn't sound stupid or anything.”
“It doesn't sound stupid at all.”
A few moments of silence fell on the informative conversation. When he didn't say anything more, Kagome looked in his direction, wondering what was keeping his mouth shut.
He was calmly staring into the night sky, obviously testing his new skills. She started to turn her attention away from the clan-leader's facial features when she found herself staring, but soon found that she could not.
When had he gotten so…handsome?
She felt herself smile, though she didn't know why.
Kouga felt her eyes on him. Turning his gaze from the stars, he found her staring at him, a faint smile gracing her lips. He flashed a cocky grin at her in return, watching as her cheeks turned rosy pink in color.
She snapped her head back to looking up at the sky.
`Oh no, how embarrassing!'
She thought desperately for something else to say, in hopes of capturing his attention elsewhere.
“Um, they sure are beautiful aren't they, Kouga?” She blurted out in a rush.
“Yeah, beautiful.” Kouga whispered, though he wasn't looking at the stars. As he allowed himself to stare at the woman of his dreams, he wondered when and why she had dropped the traditional “kun” from his name.
Kagome slowly turned her attention back to his striking blue eyes and blushed when she realized they were focused on her.
She breathed in softly when his hand found hers. He scooted closer to her, their eyes still held in an intense gaze.
“Oh, Kagome,” He whispered when his lips were inches away from her own. “If only you knew,” Her eyelids drooped when he got even closer to her. “How much I love you.”
WHOOSH
The moment was ruined as a gigantic mass of something was heading straight for them.
Kouga grabbed Kagome and leapt out of the way just in time as it embedded itself in the ground they had been laying on just moments ago. Wasting no time whatsoever, the strong wolf youkai pushed Kagome gently behind him and prepared himself for battle. Both of them then fixed their eyes on what had so suddenly attacked them.
It was a huge scorpion demon, with a dangerously large stinger of venom.
“Heh heh heh,” It chuckled. “You are stronger than I expected, Leader of the Ookami youkai tribe, Yourouzoku Kouga!”
Kagome gasped and Kouga narrowed his eyes at the sickening creature that apparently knew of his title.
“Who are you, and what do you want?” He demanded, growling and baring his fangs.
“You know who I am, or rather, what I am. And I'm here…” The monstrous youkai charged forward, stinger ready. “To claim your life!”
Kouga scooped Kagome up into his arms and dashed behind the demon.
Kagome dared to open her eyes when Kouga halted, and she gasped at what she saw. Their attacker was one of Naraku's incarnations!
“Kouga, he was sent by Naraku!” She cried from the safety of his arms.
“What?!”
“Look at his back!”
Kouga turned his eyes to where Kagome had fixated hers. There on his back, was the clear image of a spider.
Naraku had sent him? Why?
“Hmm, you're very smart, little girl.” It rotated its body until it was facing them again. “It's too bad that I must dispose of you!” The scorpion suddenly swung its stinger dangerously close.
Kouga dashed in the opposite direction, this time setting Kagome down on her feet and handing her his sword.
“Hold onto this just in case.”
The demon swung its tail again, barely missing its target. Kouga took off once more, leading the beast away from his Kagome. It wasted no time and charged at him, full speed.
“You will die!” It shouted, shoving forward in a sudden burst of speed. Kagome inhaled sharply.
“Kouga, watch out!”
Kouga glanced back over his shoulder just in time as the stinger made an attempt to stab through his back. He did what he could, and executed a small hurried side-flip, but not without some cost. The venomous knife-like attachment grazed over his side, piercing through the thick armor and cutting at his flesh. He winced in pain, but didn't allow the demon to hear him cry out. Gracefully landing on his feet, his back to his opponent, Kouga turned his rage-filled eyes to the monster.
“Kouga!” Kagome shouted, close to tears.
“I'm all right, Kagome.” He grunted, glaring at the demon with the hatred of a new intensity.
The demon wasted no time and ran faster than ever toward the Wolf Leader. Kouga stood perfectly still, waiting for the opportune moment. The scorpion was yards away now. With a growl of pure anger, he ran to the demon, preparing a hateful fist.
They were both running at full speed. With every intention to kill, the two youkai had no reason to hold back…
