Chapter 14: Reminisce
“Die, Naraku.” She stood up and took a couple steps to the amazed hanyou, then let out a painful scream as she unleashed the miko powers she had been born with. The dormant flood of power overwhelmed the evil in the area and quickly disposed of any remnants of the youkai battle, of the blood upon the ground, and of Naraku himself. She had purified an almost 4 mile radius, she being the epicenter of purity that overtook every being within her reach. The dead were sent to the beyond…and the wounded returned to their vigor. She gazed around at what she had done, and at her stirring mate. Clasping the jewel, she was truly content, and collapsed to the ground. Raven black hair falling over her thin shoulders and blue glow receding back into her small body.

Sesshomaru blinked a couple of times before he adjusted to the blinding light that filled the clearing. He looked around at the battleground, which was now abundant in the most delicate and beautiful flowers, cascading over the once pools of blood and gore, and glistening in the most heavenly morning dew. Nature was continuing its normal cycle as if nothing had happened, the beautiful flowers covering up the evidence of the bloody occurrences.
Sesshomaru sat for a while, trying to remember what had happened while admiring the beauty of the scene. The sunlight streaming through the trees to cast patterns into the flowers along the forest floor; for a while, he wondered if he was dead. The scenery was perfect, except for a beautiful, iridescent black spot that marred the multicolored beauty. Sesshomaru directed his attention to this dark spot and walked over, plopping down next to it and running his clawed fingers through the hair, staring into the face of the fallen angel. Her clothes missing, her white skin was accentuated by the different flowers that grew around her sleeping form. He gently ran his finger over her cheek and kissed it lightly, inhaling the sweet scent that radiated off of her and mixed with the fragrances around him.
“Kagome.”
Whispering her name brought back a flood of memories that revealed the horrific incident that came about on the ground that these flowers grew on, that he rested on, and where his beautiful tenshi lay. Taking in sharp breaths, his eyes turned red for a moment before gathering up this beautiful woman, who had given her energy, her heart, her soul, mind, spirit, and life for those around her. He buried his head into her shoulder, nuzzling the faint mating mark that he thought back to. Her soft skin caving in to his grip as he held her against his body, willing it to warm up, willing it to accept his heat. But it didn't.
Sesshomaru let out a single howl and cradled his precious miko. His mate, lover, confidant, and friend. While he wallowed in his sorrow, cursing the gods that had ever created the vile Shikon, a single thought made its way to his head. `Tenseiga…' Laying Kagome down gently, he reached to his belt and pulled out said blade, success glinting in his beautiful golden eyes that were once murky due to the deep sorrow he felt once he heard the dull thrum of the fang's heartbeat. He kissed her cold forehead before squinting his eyes to make out the vile creatures that were already carrying off her pure soul; it took about a dozen to take away the large selfless soul of Kagome, which amazed Sesshomaru.
With a single stroke his now beloved fang breathed life into the miko, and opened her eyes. Her eyes…he thought that he would never see the deep cerulean depths ever again. He held his breath as her eyes regained their sheen, losing the empty, soulless look that had occurred because of the demons from the afterlife. When she looked around the clearing, her eyes fell upon her guardian angel. His silver hair given an otherworldly glow as the sun outlining the faint wisps, and made his eyes glow.
He embraced her, picking up her weak form and crushing it to his body, letting her sob into his chest. She had lost almost everything that she had come to know over the last few years spent in the Sengoku Jidai. Her small form trembled with new sadness that should not have to endure, and shook her to the core. She was utterly alone…save for the mate that would nurse her body and mind back to health.
Sesshomaru pulled back from the embrace and looked into her tear filled eyes. The silver haired youkai brushed the tears away threatening to fall from the woman's beautiful eyes. He extended an elegant hand to her, whispering three simple, but powerful words. “Let's go home.”
~~
Sesshomaru brushed the cold, damp cloth across his love's sweaty brow, his expression scrunched up in distaste as he cursed himself for letting her get hurt. She had exhausted most of her miko powers, and would need ample time to recover from the battle with Naraku. He reminisced the fateful day when she had lost everything she lived for…and almost lost him as well. `Kuso! Curse the gods…She shouldn't have to suffer…She shouldn't have to endure pain that she didn't deserve…' He idly stroked his hand across her silky hair, wishing that he would see the bright and beautiful blue orbs glowing back at him one day. He wanted his beautiful mate back, dammit…He wanted his Kagome back.
He gazed upon her face once more, his eyebrows drawing up in concern as he looked at the pale face, the lack of her full rosy cheeks, the paleness of her once full, pink lips…He wanted to kiss those lips…and bring them to life once again. The bags under her eyes told him that it would be fruitless, and the most that he could do for her would be to nurse her back to health. That was the only thing he could do for her after she had given her life for his existence. Crawling into the bed next to her still body, he gathered her against his body and inhaled her sweet scent to calm his nerves. He hadn't left her beside until that fateful day, and would not rest until she was better again.
Disappointed that he couldn't feel her small arms wrap around his body, he fell into a light slumber, thinking about the precious miko he was wrapped around.
~~
Kagome ran through a dark forest, tripping on various roots and cursing herself for being such a damn klutz. Her clothes were being torn from her body as she continued her escape from the place that had sealed the sorrow in her already broken heart. She knew she was being pursued as she fled from the dead corpses of her best friends, and the lifeless body of her handsome mate.
Naraku was in close pursuit of the retreating miko, torturing her by latching onto her mind. Evil would always enrapture her heart, and never cease to throw her soul into agony. She had been having dreams of such dark torment ever since the day Naraku would cease to exist, but the problem was that they were still occurring after the battle was long over. She cried out in her dream, the roots being the shackles of pain that would always be her foremost thought.
When she reached a clearing, she rested, extending her miko in order to see if Naraku was still in pursuit. Concluding that he was far behind, she sat down at the trunk of a tree and clutched her hand at her heart, trying to still her frayed nerves. She let her eyelids slip over her eyes while she attempted to calm herself, but tranquility would not come.
“Koi…” A familiar voice rang through her ears. Not believing what she was hearing, her eyes flew open and confirmed her assumption. Sesshomaru. Oh, Sesshomaru, in perfect condition and all of his beauty standing right before her. This dream was certainly a tangling mass of twists and turns, but all she thought of was elation at the sight of her healthy mate. She ran towards him, arms outspread and closed them when she expected to run into a hard body. The impact never came. She looked around in the pitch blackness, sobbing as she crumpled to the forest floor, or whatever it was. Would she always be lonely? Would she forever face opposition when it came to her pursuit of happiness? Why her…?
She opened her eyes and saw a single beam of light slice through the darkness. In this circle of perpetual light that came from an unknown source, she saw a Kagome that was much younger than the Kagome many knew now…A carefree, immature, and happy Kagome that had just fallen through the well and met her first love. The real Kagome looked on as the scene sped ahead, now looking at Inuyasha holding said Kagome, kissing her passionately.
`Wait…that never happened…!' A confused Kagome became distressed as the circle of light disappeared, and so did the tender love scene between her and the hanyou. Another beam of light crashed through the darkness, directing Kagome's attention to her left. This vision was one that Kagome would have preferred not to view, but could not turn away from. Inside, Inuyasha held another familiar miko. Kikyo. Her vision blurred as her blue eyes were tainted by tears.
However, there was one more vision for the miko left—one that shocked and surprised Kagome out of her sorrow. Inside the light, she saw a motionless Kagome that appeared to be in failing health, and a faithful Sesshomaru forever glued to her side. Another youkai, seemingly a servant, entered the vision and woke the dozing Sesshomaru with a grim expression on her face as she felt pulse of the Kagome in the vision. Seeing this, Sesshomaru went into a violent rage, killing the servant on the spot and ravaging his palace as well as surrounding lands. His anger and bloodlust could not be contained as he killed so many innocent lives, hoping it would suffice for the death of his mate.
Kagome was breathing hard. What did this mean? Was she dead? She looked about her as the scenery began to take on a lighter tone, the pitch blackness replaced with inky warmth as a lone figure made her way to stand in front of the scared miko. “Konnichiwa, Kagome-sama.” The figure bowed, black hair cascading over ancient armor.
Kagome immediately bowed back. “…Midoriko-sama…” Looking up, she gazed into the older miko's eyes, ready for any wisdom that she would share with her, hoping that this whole reverie would be clarified with a simple explanation. The explanation never came as the stoic miko faded and blended in with the surrounding inkiness, only leaving behind an eerie whisper of a voice.
“You must live for him.”
~~
Kagome immediately sat up in bed, breathing in deeply as she awoke from the longest dream she had ever experienced. She instantaneously remembered Midoriko's words, and looked to a sleeping Sesshomaru. She reached out a hand to stroke his smooth fair cheek, but let out an audible gasp when she realized that she couldn't touch him, but only go through him.
`Oh Kami! What the hell is happening?!' Looking back to the bed, she almost screamed when she saw her body back on the bed, instead of clean white sheets. Breathing heavily, she scrambled off the bed, but was restricted by small soul bringers from the next life. “Let me go! I'm not ready to leave…I can't leave him!”
You must resist, Kagome-sama. A small tug of a voice lifted up through her soul and she gasped. `H-How…?' She looked around for the source of the voice, but to no avail. It was inside her head…she was sure she was going crazy.
You are dead, Kagome-sama…your miko couldn't sustain your life force because too much of it was used to defeat Naraku. However, with your remaining power combined with mine, returning your astral form to your body should work. `Holy hell… How do I do this, though?' Kagome screamed inside of her own head, laughing at herself that she was actually responding to the familiar voice. However, now was not the time for humor…she had to live!
Calm yourself, child. Retreat to the inner recesses of your mind…and clear your thoughts.
This would require much of Kagome's concentration and miko energy to focus on the task at hand. She calmed as an unfamiliar miko barrier melded with her own, forming an iridescent orb around her floating astral form. She felt the constant tug of her soul as the soul bringers hauled her off to the afterlife, but would have to ignore them in order to stop them. She just hoped that she could accomplish it in time.
Sugoi, Kagome-sama. You're doing well…keep going!
The small voice urged her on and Kagome's concentration mounted, her eyebrows flitting together in order to block out any external influences. However, she was faintly alert to the entrance of the grim servant that would pronounce her death. `Oh no! He's going to go into a youkai rage!'
Calm, Kagome!
Kagome felt warmth engulf her as she implemented the last of her strength, a tear streaking across her cheek as she drew on more power than she knew she had. Just when she thought that she had exhausted her miko energy, she was slammed back into solidity, and woke up with a handsome youkai's arms.
“Ohayo, Sesshomaru-sama. It looks like your mate will be fine.” Said the timid little tanuki youkai servant.
Kagome had altered her set fate.
