Chapter Twenty Two

Dinner that evening was a tense affair to say the least. Sesshoumaru was scowling at Jaken for making his ward cry, Koga kept flirting with Kagome and Inuyasha growled more than he ate. It was obvious that the wolf merely wanted to goad the half demon. It would have been amusing to Sesshoumaru if it weren't causing him a headache.

Kagome was doing her best to keep the peace between everyone. Sango was helping her as best she could and Miroku, well, he was nursing a black eye at the moment. Apparently, groping in private was fine but not around others. Something he would have to grow accustomed to. Oh well, he supposed, it was worth it.

Ayeka was worn out, worried. She'd trained far too long over the last few days, putting every ounce of her strength and intellect into it. So much so, that now, her reserves were tapped. Sesshoumaru knew it, but he'd not said anything about it. He would tonight when they were alone. She was far too pale, and looked ready to fall over. He slid his large hand up her back, feeling the tense muscles under his fingers. He gently squeezed the base of her skull to relax her.

Her eyes fluttered closed and she let a soft moan escape, at the feeling. The sound shot directly to his groin and without warning, he stood, pulling her with him. "Good night" he said without preamble and Ayeka smiled, and nodded. What in the world had gotten into him?

The assembled company looked up in surprise at his abrupt departure. Inuyasha sniffed lightly. Just great... his brother was aroused. Suddenly he didn't feel all that hungry. "Gee thanks" he muttered, propping himself against Kagome and pushing his barely touched food away. Sesshoumaru glared at him coldly before tugging his wife into the hall.

"Sesshoumaru?" she asked, but fell silent at his growl. She looked up at him with wide green eyes as he towered over her. His golden eyes glinting with unspoken desire. It nearly took her breath away. She felt the tug of passion in her stomach.

He stared down at her, those shimmering emerald pools bright with intelligence, and want. "You have trained too much the last few days" he told her. She blushed, she'd been too tired to do much more than fall into bed. Obviously, her lack of attentions had gotten to him. She braced her small hands against his hard chest and leaned up. "I am sorry".

Sesshoumaru leaned down to her, letting her reach him. She pressed her lips to his softly. The dewy petals of her lips softening over his. He wrapped one long arm around her waist drawing her up and against him. The other tangled in the curls at her nape. She drew back after the chaste caress, and met his eyes, "Forgive me" she whispered.

He pressed a kiss to her brow, her nose, buried his nose against her jaw. "You are remaining in bed all day tomorrow" he told her. She smiled against his silken hair, the pressed her lips against his pointed ear, "As my lord wishes, but you won't be getting anything done either" she pointed out.

He hmpfed against her flesh, "I will be getting a great deal done Koi". His words made her temperature rise and he was very aware of it. He crashed his lips to hers, devouring her mouth, his tongue sweeping inside to dominate her mouth. Against him, she moaned, her little hands fisting in his hair, his clothing.

He let his hands glide over her hips to hook beneath her legs, bringing them round his waist. She tightened her hold, pressing herself close to his chest. He growled softly to her, fangs rubbing against her satin lips. Her tongue curled around one fang. His hands tightened on her bottom. Claws nicking silk.

Then they were moving, swiftly through the halls. Her face buried against his shoulder, "I can walk you know" she told him. He grunted. "What if someone sees?" she asked. "I'll blind them for you" he told her glibly. She chuckled against him, pressing a kiss to his ear. Swirling her tongue against the shell teasingly. He growled loudly, "This is why you can't walk to our rooms" he told her. She smiled, "Because I kiss your ear?" she asked. He shoved the door to their chamber open, "No, because I am faster".

She laughed out loud with delight when he hoisted her higher so that he could look up at her. She felt like a child hanging in his powerful grip. "You've been spending too much time with Rin" she gently admonished from her lofty position. He smiled at her, "I see you like it too".

She squealed when he spun her around. "Oh stop Sesshoumaru, you are going to make me sick!" she cried out in laughter. Her joy was wondrous to him. He drew her back to his warmth and kissed her softly. She smiled at him so sweetly, her eyes swimming with trust and something else....

"Tell me that you love me" he commanded her. She Stared at him, the world slowing. She did but she wasn't sure she should announce it to the world. He growled at her lack of response, "Why are you hesitating?" She caressed his face, "After all that has passed between us, is it wise to speak it aloud?" she asked in a hushed whisper. He set her down.

He grunted, "Woman, do you or do you not love this Sesshoumaru?" he asked again. She nodded slowly. He pressed his forehead against hers, "Then say it Ayeka. Say that you love me. Promise that love is only mine". Tears lit her eyes and she nodded, "I do," she whispered, "I love you and I always will". He crushed her to him, the words soothing his demon.

He smiled at her, a wicked grin. She looked up at him, suspicious, "What?". He pointed to the balcony, "It would please this Sesshoumaru if you would shout it to the world" he told her. He wondered if she'd do it. Her spine stiffened, but wait, she could perhaps use this to her advantage, "And if I do what shall my reward be?" she asked him.

Ah, clever woman. she DID play so well. "Any boon you ask" he answered. She smiled almost triumphantly. "ANY boon?" she confirmed. He nodded, what could she possibly ask that would be so hefty? Diamonds? He had rooms full. A new weapon perhaps? Gladly. It was suddenly a great matter of pride to him that this be done.

She smirked at him and turned on her heel and moved to the large glass doors. She smiled over her shoulder as she flung them wide. The night wind lifting her hair around her. Was there ever a temptress of her power in the world?

She stalked out onto the stones and leaned over the wall. "Listen well my love" she murmured for his ears only. Then she opened her mouth and her voice rang out in the night, over the courtyard to the soldier's quarters, to the outer guard posts, to the walls and the world beyond. "I love you Sesshoumaru!".

His ears rang but his heart grew light. The many echoes of her declaration drifting back to him. He smiled contentedly. She turned to see him, standing in the stillness of their room. His exquisite features soft and his eyes glowing. She hoped to see him like this many more times. Unguarded. The man beneath the armor, the ice.

"Happy now?" she asked, coming back to lean against him. He chuckled, "Vastly". She nodded, "Good that is my aim, to keep you pleased" she told him. She turned and walked past him, yelping slightly when he smacked her bottom, "What a sassy wench you are" he commented. His tone warm, amused. A red brow lifted, "Careful my dread lord, one might accuse you of developing a sense of humor". She walked from him then.

She kept going. "Where are you going?" he asked her. His gaze directed on the large bed. She smiled over her shoulder, "I am going to take a bath my lord, perhaps you might join me and we can discuss this boon you've agreed to grant me". He'd much rather have been pinning her to the bed, ravishing her thoroughly, but he followed.

Ayeka heard him behind her, and entered the water. He joined her a moment later. She dunked beneath the hot water and rose again. Like a water nymph, she tantalized him. He growled seductively but she held him off, grabbing a vial of soap for her hair. He sighed, and moved behind her, plucking it from her fingers.

Ayeka let him lather her hair. His large hands massaging and kneading her scalp, claws scraping lightly. She leaned against him and moaned her pleasure. "Keep that up woman and I'll take you to bed with soap on your hair" he warned. She smiled, until he doused her with a bucket of cold water.

"OH! WHY YOU!" she shrieked and he laughed, actually laughed at her distress. She pushed the sodden mass of hair from her face to look at him. "You, you laughed Sessh" she whispered. He nodded, "It was amusing to see my mate shriek like a scalded cat" he informed her.

She shook her head, her expression serious in the lamplight. "No. You laughed. Not some chuckle, not some snort, you really laughed". He thought about it then shrugged. "I suppose that is because I am happy" he answered. He hadn't really considered his actions, he just felt the urge to do it. Once again, Sesshoumaru was a mystery to her.

He noticed the odd look on his mate's face. "What? Can this Sesshoumaru show amusement on occasion?" he asked. She cocked her head. "You are like an onion Sessh". He looked mightily offended, "Are you implying that I smell?". She burst out laughing, getting herself under control when he stared at her like she'd grown another head. "No, not at all dear", she soothed, "I am saying that you have many layers to yourself and not everyone gets to see them".

He grunted, still not pleased to be compared to an odorous vegetable. She splashed water at him. "I suppose that didn't come out right" she admitted. He moved behind her, his golden eyes never leaving hers. She thought of a moment and then spoke, "It's like you are shiny and new!". Well, it was much better than being an onion. He nuzzled her, "I am not a cruel man" he told her. She rubbed her cheek against his, "I know that Sesshoumaru. I understand that now".

He dunked, let her wash his long hair. She was jealous of it and she told him so. He made sure that he flung water on her when he tossed the heavy mass over his shoulder again. She growled at him and he smiled, "Not bad. For a human" he told her, "Now what is this boon you wish?".

She turned in his arms, "It is not a small thing that I am going to ask Sesshoumaru, but please hear me out to the end". He frowned, this did not sound good. Just what had he gotten himself into? He agreed to listen. She took a deep breath. "This Naraku, he's not stupid and he's not weak?". Sesshoumaru nodded. She licked her lips and continued, "We have this one chance right? We can't lose and regroup and go after him again?"

Sesshoumaru shook his head, "One chance and if we fail, we die" he confirmed, "But we will not fail. You needn't worry about that". She shook her head, "I have a plan" she blurted out. She had his full attention now. She didn't want to meet his eyes now, and he knew that he wasn't going to like what she had to say. It was only his lingering promise to hear her out that prevented him from commanding her silence.

"In the modern era, there are weapons that we could use to defeat him. Things that would allow our men to come home, decrease our casualties. Ensure our victory." she told him. He frowned, he supposed she wanted Kagome to pass through the well and get these things for them. He much preferred blades and demon weapons.

"I understand that you seek to spare them, that is compassionate of you. This battle is not a human battle Ayeka, it is a demon battle. Demon driven, demon won. The humans caught in this will suffer regardless. On both sides, it is the way of war and you know this" he said.

She shook her head, "I don't believe it is. Your men deserve to live. So do the men he has tricked into serving him. If they see the power of modern weapons they would scatter, flee. Live!" she argued. He grunted, perhaps that was so, but there was something pure about the ways of fighting with sword and bow.

He'd seen the modern art of war. He did not care for it. One tiny object could fall from the sky and obliterate whole cities. Thousands of lives crushed in a fraction of a second. No chance to look upon their enemy, no chance to fight back. War in her time was messy and brutal and often fought from a distance.

There was little honor is that to his way of thinking. Perhaps he was a purist but he liked to see the faces of the men he killed. He felt that them seeing him allowed them to accept death with grace. As it should be. He did not want modern weapons polluting the bloody purity of HIS conflict. He told her that.

She nodded, "All right then. Explosives, a small rocket. To hit his castle if there is no other way. His castle is his source of power isn't it? What if he retreats inside of it while we are battling and makes his escape?" She asked. She was smart and not easily discouraged, "You promised any boon Sesshoumaru."

"Inuyasha will not allow Kagome to go alone" he told her. She smiled gently, "Kagome can't get them" she told him. Sesshoumaru stared down at the woman in his embrace. "You? You want to go and get them?" he asked, "The well will not let you pass". She bit her lip, "I don't want to use the well" she whispered, icicles dripping down her spine. "I need the mirror".
