Across Time by: Sakura

A/N OK, I'm not good with details and such, so for this whole pregnancy thing, well, let's just says we're going forward in time. Seventeen months into the future to be exact.

~*~*~*~*~

Kagome held the six month-old Ryu in her arms, adoring her son's features. He had beautifully long, silver hair, and small golden eyes that would warm anyone's heart. The only thing that bothered Kagome was her son's ears; they were formed halfway from Inu Yasha's dog ears and her own human ones.

Miroku and Sango both eyed their son Kohaku, more than any other parent would even know. With all the demons running about, no one was safe. How Kagome longed to be with Inu Yasha.

She had watched all through Sango's pregnancy how Miroku had treated his wife-they had gotten married for their child's sake. Kagome thought it was sweet that Miroku thought of his son as much as he did.

Inu Yasha, on the other hand, barely stood around during Kagome's labor, and hadn't once offered to help hold Ryu since the day he was born. But according to Matoko, Inu Yasha had been a good father to both his children. Maybe it was due to the fact that Matoko had altered time that Inu Yasha almost refused to be near his son. Kagome's heart ached as she thought of her leaving Ryu with his father.

She still had a year and a half left to finish school, and then she would begin her other plans for the future. There was no way in hell that her family would be able to take care of her silver-haired, golden-eyed son. People would eventually say something about his odd looks. Therefore, she had no choice but to leave him with Inu Yasha.

The reincarnated priestess looked down as her son began to stir and wiggle in her arms. Ryu was so innocent and fragile. What would happen to him if Inu Yasha neglected to care for him?

~*~*~*~*~

"Is that the well, Matoko?"

"Yep, it sure is. That's the one I went through a year ago; and today's the day when you two get to see what it's like in the future!" Matoko exclaimed. She was very excited about letting Ryu meet Kagome and introducing everyone to Jaeger. She was hoping it'd be splendid!

Jaeger stepped cautiously over to the well. He dropped on all fours and began to sniff it. Who knew what he was trying to do, although it made him live up to his wolf name.

"I never figured it to be real; I'd heard the stories from Koga, but I never bothered to believe them. A real sacred well....Wow." Jaeger stood up looking quite pleased with himself. "Well, are we going through or not?"

"If you'd just calm down a bit."

"We'll be able to go through eventually. Just wait a while." Ryu's eyes flashed dangerously in the direction of the wolf pup. Ever since Ryu started getting his strength back, he began to dislike Jaeger more and more. His ignorance was annoying to the quarter dog youkai.

~*~*~*~*~

Things had gone over better than Matoko had expected...but then that didn't include her father's meeting with Jaeger. Inu Yasha had learned to hate Koga because he considered him a rival in strength and in love; and his learning of Jaeger's relation to Koga....

Jaeger had no problem with Inu Yasha, except that the hanyou hated him as well as his late brother. Other than that, the rest of the group's welcomes had made Jaeger feel warm and happy. He turned his head to Ryu who had gone off to find the younger version of his mother.

Ryu stood in front of Kagome; but he wasn't looking at her, he was more focused on the smaller version of his self, cradled in his mother's arms. The child too seemed interested in his future being.

The young Ryu had the silvery hair and elfin ears as the older one. But there was also something different. Little Ryu's eyes were not the same as the older version. The older one's eyes closely resembled those of his uncle Sesshomaru, while the smaller one's eyes were a tawny, amber color; Probably a mix of Kagome's and Inu Yasha's.

For the first time that day, Ryu looked up into his mother's face. He stared at her, searching her something he wanted to find. Blushing at her confused expression, the hanyou turned his head away briskly. He turned back, and asked,

"Uhh...may I?"

He was referring to the child and Kagome knew it. She allowed him to, handing over the infant to her elder son. Ryu held out his shaking hands, steadying them, as the child came into contact with his arms.

The infant Ryu looked curiously up at the one holding him. Never before had he been held by anyone other than his mother. And this stranger's strong arms were scary to be near. So, the small one did one of the only things he had learned so far in life: he wailed.

Ryu bent forward, looking for anything that would have made the child cry, he found nothing. Suddenly, the crying stopped, and Ryu felt a sharp pain at the topmost part of his head. He pulled back, only to reveal to himself what was going on. The young quarter demon had pulled his holder's hair. Ryu gave a small yelp of pain as the infant pulled harder....the child then giggled at the pain he had caused. Kagome took back her son.

A little tired and fed up, Ryu sat cross-legged in the grass. He leaned against a tree, the bright sun peering down through the branches and thick leaves.

The day was gorgeous.

Jaeger and Matoko played tag in a clearing; Kagome tried fruitlessly to get her young son to stand on his own as Shippo watched eagerly; Sango adored Kohaku, while Miroku tied locks of his wife's hair in knots; and Inu Yasha sat in a tree...idly watching his 15-year-old son nap under the same tree.

They could have on with that forever, had there not been a ruffling in the bushes that startled everyone but Ryu, who remained sleeping.

Inu Yasha jumped down from the tree, stalking over to the bushes. He was not expecting what was about to happen....

Two blundering wolves jumped out at Inu Yasha, bearing their fangs, trying to scare the hanyou, only to make him want to roll over laughing. He recognized them almost immediately.

"Hakaku, Ginta!"

Inu Yasha turned his head to see Jaeger limping forward (he never truly recovered from his arrow wound). He had somewhat of a perplexed look on his face.

"Ginta, Hakaku," he repeated. "What on earth...?"

The two oafs too had a perplexed look about them, from which they soon recovered. They ran up to Jaeger, glomping him tightly; they were obviously happy about seeing him.

"Glad to have found you, Jaeger! Ayame-"

"Wait, Ayame's here?" Jaeger asked, a miserable look on his face.

"Why of course," Hakaku stated. "Actually, she's back at the den; we're supposed to be looking for food."

"You don't think we'd've left her behind....Not after she found out about Koga n' all," Ginta said.

"No, well of course...." Jaeger said, though not sounding ever keen on the fact that a girl was staying in his den.

"But we're still glad to have found you instead of food. Maybe Aya won't be mad if we go back with you!" Ginta exclaimed.

Jaeger turned back to his new group of friends. "Well, I...."
