Chapter 15: End of Term
Kagome had gotten a relatively good number in room draw, which surprised her a little, but meant she got to take the room she wanted, right by the apartment Sesshoumaru and Fuji would be sharing. He was avoiding her now, and that hurt, but she wasn't about to let him drive her away from others, even if he did make her want to be alone to cry a lot of the time. Which didn't help the fact that she really needed to do her last-minute studying for finals.
The first one came, and she sat down and completed it, and came out feeling like her brain was mush and her stomach wanted to leave by way of her throat. She made it to the bathroom in the building, but not to a stall, before throwing up into a sink. A girl she barely new came in in the middle of it and, making clucking sounds, held her hair back for her and rubbed her back until she was done. Then she lead her to another sink and washed out the first one, and splashed cold water on her cheeks.
“Feeling better?” she asked.
“A little. Thanks.”
“Um. I'm Tsuyu. You are?”
“Kagome.”
“Okay. I know you don't know me, but can I help? Do you know what's wrong?”
Kagome was in an ironic mood, and so she answered, “Duty calls, so I'm pregnant.”
“That's awful! You should either marry or go to college, not try to do both at the same time.”
“I'm not married.”
“But you said? Duty?”
Kagome waved a hand, still hunched over the sink. “It's the child they care about, not its father.”
“Well, that's even worse! Here, let's go to lunch so we can get you some ice water and something to settle your stomach. Can you walk okay? Do you have another final today?”
“Uh huh,” Kagome said, accepting Tsuyu's support to the door.
“Oh no! You need someone to look after you. Did I see you before because you were visiting Tomo?”
“Yeah. That's the next final.”
“Well, he can take care of you then. Oh, there he is! Tomo!”
Tomo looked back over his shoulder at them, then came back. “What's wrong?”
“Kagome's suffering from morning sickness. Could you help me make sure she's all right and keep an eye on her during your final together?”
“Sure. Are you headed to lunch? That should help.”
“Yeah. Almost there, Kagome. Hold on.”
It turned out that Tsuyu lived next door to Tomo, which surprised Kagome because she didn't seem like a freshman. She managed to eat a little, and drink a little more, and was able to walk by herself to the next final, and sit down with only a minor wobble of the knees. Tomo chose to sit a seat behind her and to the side. The professor and the rest of the students filtered in, and it began.
Midway through, Kagome became aware of a pain in her lower abdomen as though someone's dagger had gotten inside and was shifting around cutting her up. She tried to ignore it but started feeling woozy and was finding it hard to concentrate. There was also a heavy warmth, like at the beginning of her period. Surreptitiously she checked, and when her fingers came up bloody, turned back to look at Tomo, who was looking at her worriedly, and showed them to him.
He closed his book and put aside his pencil and stood up. “Kagome's bleeding,” he announced, pulled her out of her seat and up into a good carry-hold. “I'm taking her to the health center.”
The class started talking, and the professor tried to say something, but Tomo ignored it all, kicked open the door, and started running.
“Good thing I'm an athlete,” he said, “or this would suck worse.”
When they got to the health center, Kagome managed to open the door for him, and they came in. The receptionist looked up as they did so.
“Is it an emergency?” she asked.
“It's a miscarriage,” Tomo answered for Kagome, since she really did hurt to much to try and explain it herself. “Can we at least get some pain killers and some kind of absorbent for her?”
“Certainly.” She spoke into an intercom system. “Is she allergic to anything.”
“No,” Kagome said.
“Well, that makes it simpler. Do you have your ID, dear? So I can look up your medical files?”
Kagome detached her keys and ID from around her neck and handed them over.
“Thank you,” the receptionist said, as a nurse came out from the back and told them to follow her.
They got her settled into a room and changed out of her bloody clothes, with a heavy pad to hold between her legs. “What does it feel like?” the nurse asked.
“Like my period, only worse.”
“Alright, we've got something to deal with that. I'll be right back.” He went away and returned shortly with a pair of pills and a small glass of water. “There you go. Is he—“ He broke off and looked at Tomo more closely. “Who is the father?”
“Almost,” Tomo said under his breath, and snapped his fingers.
Kagome giggled in the middle of trying to swallow, but didn't choke. It let her be almost cheerful in answering. “Naraku.”
“Does he know?”
“No, and I don't want him to.”
“Alright. Do your parents know?”
“No, they don't.”
“We should tell them.”
“Let me do that,” Tomo said.
“Alright. Go ahead and make use of the phone on the desk; remember to press 9 first.” He looked back at Kagome. “The sink has medically clean water, so go ahead and drink all you like, and just lie there and try to relax, alright? I'll be back to check on you later.”
“We left in the middle of a final,” Tomo said.
The nurse nodded. “Alright. We'll take care of that.”
“Thank you.” Then, once the nurse had left. “Kagome, what's your phone number?”
She told him, and he dialed it, switching to girl mode to introduce himself. Kagome listened with something between muzziness and awe as he then, extremely politely, proceeded to explain what was going on and exactly why he hated the Higurashi family for it.
Kagome heard her mother ask a question, and there was a pause, before Tomo answered, “That is a secret.”
Something else from her mother.
“If that's so important, you shouldn't have let her go to a school where over half the student population is foreign,” Tomo said, still being very polite.
Her mother said something long and a little wailing, and Tomo started to speak before she was finished. “Maybe you can avoid those mistakes with your son.”
At that point, the two plants in the corner drowned him out with their giggling, and Kagome wasn't coherent until it started getting dark.
By the time they left the health center Kagome was feeling much better, and the pain was almost all gone. Tomo took her to the student center and bought her dinner since the dining halls had already closed. They ate and laughed and Kagome stumbled back to her hall, where Kirara found out what happened and Fuji listened in, and then she went to bed. The next day Tsuyu came by to take her to meals and help her pack away her things and Kirara told her the school was going to let her recover and take a few days to study before finishing the rest of her finals and Kuronue and Hiei dropped by to help her face her mother when she came to pick her up and she went home.
Her mother was very forbearing, and didn't show any signs of disapproval or disappointment.
Fuji emailed her weekly.
Inuyasha dropped by from time to time.
From Sesshoumaru she heard and saw nothing, but he sent her flowers, and an apology.

It has been incredibly long. I know. I'm sorry. This is also about half-length, but it's the end, so it's the end. *shrug* This, believe it or not (not the pause, but the miscarriage) was intended from the start. Pretty much nobody includes these, and they're actually pretty common. So here it is.
White Tiger Princess - Aaaaah! Don't kill me for taking so long! Please! Yes, it did, but as you can see…
fluffysprincess - I hope you liked this part, even if it didn't exactly match your expectations.
Wolfstarfox - Haha! I have converted another! Actually, thanks. I intend to keep it unconventional, and unsappy.
Ryu_Hitori_Lenore_Evans - I wrote more! It's not ending!
kariangel100 - most voters agree with you. Thus, it shall be. I think.
wing_hai - *blink blink* Wow… Um. Thanks? I'll keep working on this as I can.
