Kagome stood in the full-length mirror examining her reflection and frowned at the image. She was dressed in a pair of midnight-blue, low-rise, denim Capri's, and a black-ribbed, cotton tank-top. She noted, not for the first time, that she could stand to do a few more crunches. She stood on the balls of her feet, pivoting so she could better see herself from behind. She wiggled her hips and scrunched up her nose, making a mental note to add a couple of extra miles to her time on the tread mill, as well as being more diligent about performing squats properly. She sighed, snatching her favorite jacket from a nearby chair, slipping her arms through the sleeves, she tugged at the edges. Grumbling, she stared at her reflection and gave herself the once over. Gnawing on her lower lip, she debated changing her shirt.

`Perhaps something longer with sleeves?' she thought, running her hands over the curve of her stomach. “I soo shouldn't have had that double fudge brownie,” she complained, sliding open her closet doors and frantically searching for a more flattering top. She grabbed an off-the-shoulder peasant blouse and shoved it into her messenger bag. `I could always change later,' she reasoned, Tossing her hair over her shoulder, she looked at her reflection once more and wondered if she had time to change before Inuyasha arrived. The chime of the doorbell drew her attention and she grabbed her cell phone along with her car keys and skipped down the stairs.
Inuyasha bounded up the shrine steps, three at a time. He reached the top in less than twenty seconds. A personal best and all time record he was sure. He heaved a sigh and ran a hand through his silver hair. He was nervous, not that he'd admit it to anyone. He was going to see Kagome... his little Kagome.

It had been over a year since he'd last laid eyes on her, and he was anxious to see her again. He didn't regret the time he'd spent traveling with his older brother, not that he'd admit to that either, but the time spent with Sesshoumaru had proved useful. As much as Inuyasha hated to concede it, he could be headstrong and reckless at times. He had spent the better part of the year learning a bit of self-discipline, as well as `sharpening his people skills,' as his pompous brother called it. More like lying and ass kissing as far as Inuyasha could tell, but none of that mattered now.
He sucked in a lungful of air, and a small smile graced his lips as the familiar atmosphere of the old shrine grounds overwhelmed his senses. The breeze was warm and smelled of cherry blossoms and incense. The afternoon sun warmed the stones that lined the garden path leading to the sacred tree standing in the center of the conservatory. He cursed the expensive Italian shoes upon his feet, for the hundredth time that day, as the urge to run barefoot through the grass and hide himself in the comfortable boughs of the god-tree tugged a low whimper from his throat. He sighed, steeling himself against the impetuous desires of his childhood.

He'd spent many summers napping in the cool shade of the ancient tree, or at least he pretended to be sleeping. In actuality, he'd spent those lazy afternoons voyeuristically observing the captivating young miko. He would rest himself against the trunk, one leg dangling casually from the branch he'd situated himself on, with his head lulled forward and his eyes closed. For all appearances, the half demon seemed to be sleeping soundly, save for the occasional twitch of the fuzzy appendages atop his head.
Inuyasha grinned, suppressing the smile that threatened to turn the corners of his mouth. He'd spent much of his youth watching over Kagome. The girl had a propensity towards trouble and as far as he could tell, lacked the self-preservation instincts to avoid danger. He shook his head, chuckling a bit as the image of a gangly schoolgirl that danced in his head. Kagome was always a pretty girl, even during her awkward years she possessed a certain beauty born of good-natured kindness and a selfless love of others. He reached out his right hand, extended his index finger and leaned forward slightly; the movement applied enough pressure to the glowing opal button to cause the bell to chime. He rocked back onto his heels and shoved his hands in his pockets.
He thought of the last time he'd seen Kagome, and wondered if she'd changed much. Then she'd been a skinny girl of nearly seventeen. She was a late bloomer and had just begun to develop her feminine curves. He remembered how she had blushed a deep shade of crimson when he'd caught her sunbathing and commented on the pending arrival of her womanhood. The exact wording involved the phrase “Nice tits,” and “About time.” He chuckled at the memory and impatiently jiggled the keys in his pocket while he waited for the topic of his nostalgia to open the door. `What the hell's taking so long?' he grumbled silently. His ears swiveled as he strained to hear the sound of someone running down the stairs. He immediately regretted the action when a familiar voice shrieked out, “I got it!” a bit louder than he'd anticipated. He crossed his arms over his chest and schooled his features into a scowl when the last locking mechanism on the freshly painted wooden door released with a soft click. “It's about time wench! I got better things to do than stand around waiting for you all d...” The last part of his tirade died in his throat as the door swung open and he was greeted with a dazzling smile and a warm hello from a beautiful woman that resembled the skinny teenage girl he'd left behind.
“Inuyasha!” Before his name left her lips, she was launching herself out of the doorframe and into his waiting arms. A flurry of kisses and a quick spin later, Kagome found herself on her own two feet again. A warm breeze swept through the shrine grounds, causing long silver locks to twine themselves with charcoal tresses. Time seemed to stand still, and for a moment, it was as if the pair hadn't been separated and nothing had changed. The wind died down and the couple again sucked air into their lungs. Kagome fidgeted with the hem of her shirt and ground the tip of her sneaker against the smooth concrete of the porch. “So…?” They both began nervously laughing at the awkward moment. “Oooh Yash, I've missed you so much!” she exclaimed, wrapping her arms around his waist and burying her face in the soft cotton of his shirt. A feeling of contentment washed over her as she closed her eyes and allowed the crisp, woodsy scent that was distinctly Inuyasha to sooth away the nervous tension winding in her stomach. A few moments passed before her mother appeared in the doorway.

“"Kagome, must you fling yourself at him like a rag doll? For heavens sake, give the boy some room to breathe!" her mother chided in a playful tone. “Well, you weren't planning on keeping him all to yourself, were you now, young lady? Mrs. Higurashi queried in an accusatory tone. Narrowing her eyes a bit, she stared at her daughter.

A light blush crept over Kagome's cheeks as she released her hold on Inuyasha and turned towards the front door. "No mamma, I just thought... I mean it's been forever since..." The flustered girl hung her head in defeat. She flashed an apologetic grin at Inuyasha before clasping his hand firmly in her own and skipping up the steps with her beloved half demon in tow. "Oooh Souta and gramps will be so happy to see you, Yash! It just hasn't been the same with you away!”
Most of the afternoon dissolved in a blur of rehashed memories and unexpected discoveries. By early evening, only two occupants of the house remained chatting comfortably on the living room sofa. “I really have missed you, Yash.” Her confession was whisper quiet, but she had no doubt he'd heard her. A stray stand of his luminescent locks garnered her attention as she avoided his gaze. After a brief moment of hesitation, she reached out and gently twirled the wayward tendril around her index finger. A soft sigh escaped her and she marveled at the silky texture of his hair. Her pulse jumped when a clawed hand wrapped around her wrist lightly tugging her forward. She turned her head up, finding herself staring into molten amber eyes, a swirl with emotions she couldn't identify. “Inu… yasha?” his name rolled off of her tongue in the form of a question. He was looking into her, the intensity in his eyes making her fidget.
His released her wrist in favor of stroking the back of his hand along her flushed cheek. He stared into her warm cinnamon eyes, relieved to find the same wide-eyed innocence he'd always loved about her. Her every emotion was on display in those rich brown pools and right now she was confused and scared. Taking a deep breath, he draped his arm over her shoulder, tucking her close to his side. His hand trailed lightly along her bare arm in slow, smooth strokes. He waited for her heartbeat to slow to a normal rhythm before he spoke. “So... tell me about this Hobo guy you're marrying.”
