Alternate Lives
Chapter two: Two souls, Two stories
By: Ethril Dragon
“I honestly do not know what to think Inu-Yasha,” an elderly voice floated around Kagome, soft and calming, filled with wisdom and age.
“What do you mean? That's Kagome and Sesshomaru obviously put her under a spell!” an angry voice nearly yelled, making Kagome whimper in pain from the headache she was getting.
All noise stopped for a moment and she felt a wrinkled hand on her forehead. “She is running a fever I am afraid.” The elder woman's voice said. Kagome frowned, her mind coming more to focus. She knew that voice; it was the voice that had always comforted she and her sister during the years. Her eyes snapped open and she sat up with a jolt. She looked around and her eyes rested on the old woman who had spoken.
“Mother! You're here…” her voice trailed off as her mind retracted from touching the woman's. Again it was similar and yet different from the mind of her mother.
Kaede frowned as Kagome jolted up and claimed her as her mother. “Rest child, all will be well soon.” Kaede said, trying to comfort the now crying girl.
Kagome heard the comfort in the woman's voice and only then did she realize she was crying. She whipped away the tears, ashamed for how she had broken down after Sesshomaru had thrust her through the portal. She rubbed her eyes, trying to focus on the others around her. They all looked like the people she knew and loved, but there were still faces missing. “Where is everyone?” she muttered. Naraku and Onigumo should be here; after all, Kagura was married to Miroku and would never leave his side. Kouga should have been hovering next to Sango. Kagome frowned; so many things were different here.
“What do you mean Kagome? Everyone is here.” Sango said worriedly, sitting down next to her best friend.
Kagome sighed, at least some things were still the same, Sango was still a kind person. “No, I mean Sesshomaru, Naraku, Onigumo, Kikyo, where is everyone? Kouga should be here to…” her voice faded off when she looked around at all the strange looks. “What? Are things really so different in this world?” she muttered tiredly.
Before anyone could answer there was a high voice calling out in a greeting outside the hut. Everyone turned, still shocked at what was happening except Kagome. She looked away as the Kagome of this world walked through the door and stood frozen in confusion and surprise.
“Who is that!” the younger looked Kagome cried out. They looked a lot alike, but now that they were together, everyone could tell that their eyes were different, their clothes were different, and the Kagome that was saying strange things looked older. (a/n to make things less confusing, I'll call the alternate Kagome, Priestess Kagome.)
Priestess Kagome sighed and took several calming breaths. “Let me explain.” She said slowly and softly.
It took some time, but she was able to explain that she was from an alternate world, where everyone was a little different. The enemies in this world were friends in her own world, and she was mated to Sesshomaru. By the time she explained why she was in this world, everyone was quiet and contemplative.
“It would be nice if everyone were friends.” Kagome murmured. She was looking down at the ground, her hands in her lap. The one thing she didn't understand was what Priestess Kagome had called the “Kibou Kousei”. Kagome shook her head and reached up to gently finger the Shikon jewel shards under her shirt. “Can you please tell us again about the Kibou Kousei?” Kagome asked.
Priestess Kagome sighed. “The Kibou Kousei is a crystal that formed itself into a star. It is filled with the six elements that make up my world. Earth, Fire, Wind, Water, Darkness, and Light. It is what makes my world whole and at peace.” She took a breath of air before continuing. “It was created a very long time ago by my ancestor to restore peace to the ultimate war, which had started after a series of terrible wars where humans and demons killed each other. My ancestor was a half-demon with tremendous power. She made the jewel by collecting the spirits of those who had fallen and wanted peace. She was able to find five that were very strong. In order to make the star whole, she placed her own soul in the middle to create the Kibou Kousei and connect the souls of humans and demons that she had found. In order to keep the star protected, a priestess of every generation was given the title of protector. Because I am the priestess of my generation, I have become its protector.”
“What about your sister? The alternate Kikyo?” Kaede asked, she could see the similarities and the differences of both worlds.
“Kikyo is an archer with amazing skills. She is called the Sniper because of her ability to hide and fire with great accuracy.” Priestess Kagome said with a proud smile. Her sister had taken after their father, while she had taken after their mother.
Kaede stayed silent, her mind working out where each world had changed and stayed the same. “It is strange that there just happens to be a jewel in both worlds that were given to both Kagome's.”
Miroku nodded. “It is almost like they have the same destinies and the same souls.”
Priestess Kagome jumped to her feet in rage. “I have my own soul, no other has it.” Kagome nodded and was a bit angry herself. “Ok, it's bad enough that Kikyo and I share a soul, but I don't share a soul with her.” She said pointing to the alternate Kagome.
Priestess Kagome blinked and looked at the younger Kagome in surprise. “You…share a soul with Kikyo? Is she not your sister?”
Kagome sighed and sat down, she was going to have to tell Priestess Kagome her own story, the story of her friends, and the story of this world. “You better sit, our story is just as complicated as yours.”
After several hours of talking and explaining certain areas of each others lives, it was decided that Priestess Kagome needed some time alone. Over the past day, she had shown signs of aggravation and tension. Kagome went off with Inu-Yasha to talk about the Jewel shards and what they should do about Priestess Kagome.
Priestess Kagome had wandered off towards where Sango had told her where the hot springs where. Priestess Kagome sighed as the light breeze rustled the leaves around her, she could hear the voices within the wind, they spoke a different language then the wind in her home world. She shook her head sadly and looked around, how she wished she could go home, but it would take a large amount of strength and power to open a portal, not to mention she would have to figure out how she would create the portal in the first place. She had to figure out how magic and spells worked in this world, she didn't know if her own spells would work here.
She glanced around and created a small summoning circle on her palm something that wouldn't tax her strength, and something that she could create with just a simple thought. Instantly there was a flash of her red energy and then, as it faded, a small fairy made of light fluttered in her hand. Priestess Kagome smiled encouragingly as the fairy lifted into the air and fluttered around her head. “Well I know that works now.” She murmured and the little fairy giggled maddeningly. Priestess Kagome rolled her eyes slightly. “Let's just hope you aren't the only thing I can create.”
Priestess Kagome arrived at the hot springs and quickly stripped so that she could walk into the water and rest for a short time. The fairy folded up her clothes in a blur of red and then rested on Priestess Kagome's head. She smiled and closed her eyes to let her mind expand in meditation.
She sent her soul into an astral form so that she could explore the world without fear of being hurt. She could see the auras of everything around her, her own reddish aura, the earthy tones of the forest around her, and the pinkish red aura of the light fairy she had created. There were a few animals around, curious to see who she was. She looked around and then broadened her horizon, she could see Inu-Yasha, strangely surrounded by an aura of wind, the other Kagome in her purple pink aura, and she could see Sango and Miroku together. She was not interested in them; she wanted to see those that were different in this world then her own. She turned slightly and sent out her mind to find Kouga. From what she could tell, he wasn't that much different then the Kouga she knew. His aura was different, but he was still the same old wolf. She chuckled in a whispery, echoy way before turning and searching for Sesshomaru. He was easy to find, but what she saw scared her and made her look away. He was a very different Sesshomaru then the one she loved and cherished.
She turned away in sadness, but she did notice a small aura of a young human girl…perhaps there was hope for this Sesshomaru yet. There was one last person she wanted to find, since she could not sense Onigumo. She stretched her mind and found a glimmer of a dark aura, but before she could reach it, she slammed into a barrier so hard that it caused her pain and she felt claws rip into her mind to find out who she was. She pulled away, using all her strength and knowledge of escaping mental traps, and quickly went back to her body, which was still sitting in the warm water, resting.
Her physical eyes snapped open and she grabbed her throbbing head. She felt hot angry tears roll down her cheek as everything the other Kagome was finally accepted into her mind. Naraku was pure evil, Sesshomaru wasn't kind towards humans, but she clung to the fact that Kouga wasn't that much different.
She wiped away her tears once more and stood in the water, forcing the fairy to awaken and jump into the air, fluttering her little wings. Priestess Kagome sighed and smiled warmly to the little fairy to apologize for getting up so abruptly. Even though the fairy was her creation, it still was a creature with it's own mind…and it's own soul.
Priestess Kagome stopped in thought. Its own soul, how could she be sure about that? She had created it with her energy, thus it should be apart of her. Yet when she had looked at its aura, it was different then her own. She thought for some time, if that was true that meant that auras and souls were connected in many ways. That would explain why everyone in this world had a different aura then the ones in her world. She nodded to herself, she had been taught that everyone had a different aura. So that must defiantly mean every soul is different. She laughed, she was just realizing something that seemed so simply, and yet she had never really thought about it till now.
She glanced around again, suddenly feeling a chill in the air as she dressed. Something was around, something…that felt similar to her Kibou Kousei. “The Shikon Jewel?” she wondered softly, yes, that had to be it.
She stepped into her sandals and hurried away, her fairy flying at the speed of her run.
She ran back into the village, and to Kaede's hut to get her bow. No one was there, not even the elderly Kaede. She grabbed her bow and headed swiftly to where she sensed the jewel was. It was strange how she could sense it. The aura of it was dirty and she had no wish to even go near it, but she had no choice. She could feel the Kibou Kousei pulling her towards it. It was strange, but she had to go.
When she arrived, she saw the battle immediately. It was a huge weasel demon, but the eyes were a blood red with rage and power. Off to the right side of it was a soft glow of purple. She heard a scream and saw Sango had been slashed in the side. This made Priestess Kagome angry, and before Inu-yasha had the chance to use the wind scar, she lifted and strung her bow, pulled back the string without notching a bow and released. An arrow of pure red energy shot forth and drove itself into the weasel, not killing it, but removing the evil and cleansing the jewel shard within it. The jewel shard fell from it and the weasel stood there, stunned and silent with what had just happened.
No one moved, and almost all the eyes were on Priestess Kagome. “I…I've never been able to do that.” Murmured Kagome.
Priestess Kagome smiled slightly. “That is because that arrow was made from a part of my soul. You would not be able to duplicate the effect of my arrow, though you could create one like it.” Priestess Kagome walked forward and placed a hand on the weasels head. “You best go and make something of your life.” She murmured and it ran off, still stunned slightly from what had happened.
It was that moment that Shippo broke the silence. “Is that a fairy!?”

Well…I think I might rewrite this sooner or later, but I think I did fairly well on this. To explain a few things:
The fairy is made of light and can not leave Priestess Kagome's side. It was created with Priestess Kagome's energy, but it can and will think for itself and once it is a little older, it will be able to start talking.
