Chapter 5: You Remind Me Of A Friend

KAGOME:

"Hey Sango," I said as we started walking towards the games," Who was that girl?"

Sango shrugged but Miroku spoke up," She's Kikyo Shikoku. Back in Middle School, her and Inuyasha were boyfriend and girlfriend. Inuyasha, I regret to say, was in love with the little brat. I wasn't his friend back then but I still felt sorry for the guy. He was lucky Kikyo stayed with him as long as she did. She had a reputation for dumping a guy after the 1-month limit. He lasted all eighth grade. Anyways, as soon as the eighth grade was over Inuyasha asked Kikyo if she wanted to stay with him through to high school even though she was going to Chikako's and he was going to Amaterasu."

"What'd she say," I asked even though I didn't really care.

"She said no. She didn't want to have any "strings attached" after middle school. So she left, leaving a broken hearted Inuyasha. Before Kikyo he was actually nice to a lot of people. Too bad you had to come when he still has Post-Kikyo Syndrome."

I laughed, though inside I didn't find it funny at all.

What a bitch. I mean, no "strings attached"? What kind of break up line is that? I guess that's why I didn't like her that much.

But that's not where it ended. There was more to Kikyo Shikoku.

"And by the looks of it back there," Miroku continued," She wants to get back with him. Seeing as he's captain of the baseball team and one of the most popular guys in school. Not a bad catch."

Whoa! Jeez! This Kikyo character was anything but nice!

She's probably out there right now, conning Inuyasha into thinking she really does like him for him!

… Not like I care or anything.

I mean, why should I go running after him and warn him that Kikyo might be playing him like a flute?

Then a little voice in the back of my head entered the conversation.

*Because he did the same for you when he warned you of Koga at the park. It might not have been the best way to do it, but he did it.*

I inwardly sighed. She's right. He did warn me. But he still yelled at me and made me cry. Why should I help him?

*It's the right thing to do*

She's right again… it IS the right thing to do.

*Thank you very much! Now, go help the kid before his heart gets thrown in a blender*

While we were walking, Sango had stopped at a game called coin toss where you had to toss a coin and get it to land on a saucer floating in water. Sango was concentrating very hard to get that stuffed panda.

"Sango?"

"Hm?"

"I'm going to go grab something to eat. I'll see ya later, okay?"

"Yeah, yeah! Whatever. Aw, come on! That was so on the saucer!"

I laughed as I left Sango to argue with the poor guy at the booth.

Now, if I were an egotistical hanyou, where would I be?

STILL IN KAGOME:

I was in the main courtyard in the middle of the park looking around trying to spot a glimpse of silver hair but to no avail. I sighed and muttered," Where is he?"

"You wouldn't be talking about me would you?"

I turned to see Koga staring down at me.

"Oh…um. No. I was talking about… my brother. I brought the little brat along and he seems to have given me the slip."

"Oh," he said smiling," For a minute I thought you were talking about the mutt."

I frowned and said," Don't call him that."

"Whatever you say. Hey look. There's a pathway for couples to walk along Kagome. Care to accompany me?"

"Um, well, I really should try and find Souta-"

"Nonsense. He'll be fine."

"But-"

I was already being dragged to the entrance to the pathway.

The pathway was a little concrete sidewalk that borders the edge of the river running through our town. (A/N: I'm not sure if this is true. But when I was in Japan they had a walkway like this and I'm just going off that.) On the side without the river was a small grass hill that led up to where the festival was. Koga dragged me down the steps to the sidewalk but I stopped him on the last step.

"Koga, I REALLY got to go. My brother is only 9 and-"

"He can take care of himself. Come on."

He tugged harder and we went farther down the path.

"No Koga. I don't want go."

"Come on."

"Koga! No!"

"Kagome, please, it'll only be a few minutes-"

"I SAID NO KOGA!!!!"

I screamed this at the top of my lungs and he quickly covered it.

INU:

I was walking past the entrance to the "Couples Path" when I heard a girl scream," I SAID NO KOGA!"

I immediately froze as one thought ran through my mind.

Kagome…

I ran back to the entrance and was met by a guy guarding the gate.

"Do you have a date to go with down the path?"

"No. But I-"

"No date. No walk. Sorry."

"But-"

"Nope. Sorry-"

I grabbed the guy's shirtfront and his body stiffened.

"Let me in before I break your face!"

"Right! Here!"

He opened the latch to the gate and pushed it open.

I dropped him and ran through the gate.

I jumped over all the stairs and landed at the base of the steps. I turned to the left and saw Koga hugging a struggling Kagome close to his body.

I yelled and ran at him.

KAGOME:

I fought but his grip was too strong. He was kissing me on the neck and I felt my eyes burn with tears. I squeaked when his fangs grazed against my skin and I felt him smile against the flesh of my neck.

Oh god! Somebody! PLEASE HELP ME!

Then I heard a yell as Koga's grip on me disappeared.

I fell onto the grassy hill next to the concrete sidewalk and I opened my eyes. I saw a boy with long black hair in a red Japanese outfit that looked a lot like Inuyasha's costume for tonight. But it couldn't be him, Inuyasha was half demon and this boy was all human.

The boy was punching Koga as hard as he could but Koga recovered quickly and threw him off.

"Stupid human," Koga said, standing up while walking over to the boy and picking him up by his shirtfront. He punched and the boy fell backwards onto the ground.

I jumped up and ran over to Koga, grabbing his arm and throwing all my weight on it to keep him from punching the boy again.

"NO KOGA! Stop it! Leave him alone!"

"Let go Kagome!"

Koga wriggled through my grip and punched the boy again.

"NO!"

All of a sudden the world around me started to spin. The world seemed to have started spinning way to fast for me. I gasped and put the palm of my hand to my forehead, trying to steady myself but it didn't help.

I felt myself lose balance and I fell backwards onto the grass as I whispered," Inuyasha… help…"

Then everything went black.

INU:

"Kagome!"

I ran over to her unconscious body and held her up.

"Kagome! Kagome! Kagome wake up! Please!"

I tuned to tell Koga to get help but he was gone.

"Dammit…"

"Inuyasha…?"

I turned back to Kagome; she was waking up.

"Inu- oh… you're not Inuyasha…"

I was about to tell her, yes I am! Then I remembered it was a new moon and I was human. She didn't recognize me in this form.

"Uh, yeah. My names…"

Name! Gotta think of a name! NAME!

"Kenji."

Kagome smiled feebly and answered," Nice to meet you Kenji. I'm Kagome."

Still polite even when she just fainted. This girl was amazing.

She tried standing up but it looked like she was still disoriented.

I caught her as she started to fall backwards again and said," Here let me help ya. Should I get you to a hospital?"

"No, no, no. I just haven't had a lot to eat or drink today. I must've been dehydrated and that must've taken the last of my strength."

"Okay… Want me to help you walk around for a bit?"

"Um, I don't wan to ruin your night or anything."

"Nah. My night's already shot to hell."

She gave a soft chuckle and stood up a little straighter. She started walking, me beside her with an arm wrapped gingerly around her waist. She leaned a bit against me and I felt myself blush a little, thank you nighttime.

So we continued down the "Couples Path".

KAGOME:

"So Kenji? What school do you go to?"

"Uh. Katashi's School For Boys."

"Oh, the all boy's school huh? That's not so fun."

"Yeah. How about you?"

"I go to Amaterasu High."

"That's cool."

"Yup."

There was silence. I hate awkward silences.

"You know what," I said turning my head to look at him," You remind me of a friend."

"Oh?"

"Yeah. His name's Inuyasha. He's a really good-"

I stopped mid-sentence having another flashback of our fight.

"A really good what?"

"Well… friend. But not anymore really. I made him mad."

Kenji stopped and turned to face me.

"You didn't make him mad!"

I gave him a strange look but he added," Because… you couldn't. You're way too nice."

I giggled and said," Well thanks. Even though it's not true."

"See," I explained as we began walking again," There's this guy. Well you met him, the guy who…uh… punched you"-Kenji growled-" Yeah him. Well he asked me to this festival and I turned him down. But he lied to Inuyasha and said we were going together. Inuyasha was probably hurt that I would go with his worst enemy and got mad at me."

I didn't find it necessary to include that he made me cry.

Kenji was silent until he said quietly," Well, he probably regrets getting so angry at you now."

I snorted," Ha! Inuyasha? Regretful? That selfish jerk wouldn't know regret if it came and bit him in the butt!"

I felt Kenji growl quietly so I turned and saw he had a sort of annoyed look on his face.

"You alright Kenji?"

"Uh, yeah. It's just I'm thinking what a jerk this guy is."

I nodded and looked at the clear night sky," Yeah… but there are some good things about him. Like he's brave, strong, confident- maybe even a bit too much- and not to mention a little cute."

"Oh really?"

"Well, in a puppy sort of way."

"Oh…"

"Yeah. He's a dog demon, well half dog demon at least. He hates being a hanyou but I think he's lucky. I sure wouldn't mind being demon AND human. That'd be really cool!"

"Not when everyone shuns you and calls you the filth of demons and humans."

I turned and noticed Kenji had a distant look on his face, like he was thinking of something else.

"Sounds like your speaking from experience."

He looked at me and said," No! I-I have a friend who's a hanyou. He's told me a lot about it."

"Oh, I see."

Then a voice over a speaker crackled into life and announced," Students of Amaterasu, Chikako and Katashi! Thank you for attending the Senior Student Festival at Nekko Amusement Park! We appreciate your support of your schools and hope you are enjoying your night! There will be fireworks in five minutes! Make sure you all get good seats!"

I gave a small squeal and said," Oh! Fireworks! I love fireworks!"

"They're okay."

I laughed and asked," Hey. How about we watch it together?"

He snapped his head sideways to look at me and barked," What?"

"Well, I'm never going to find my friends in five minutes and I really don't want to watch it alone."

He stared at me for a moment before answering," Well, I guess it wouldn't hurt."

I smiled and said," Great! Come on! Let's go sit on the hill over there, under the sakura tree.

I started dragging him towards the hill.

~@~

INU:

She plopped down under the sakura tree and stared at the sky expectantly, waiting for the fireworks to start.

"Hey, they said five minutes remember?"

"Yeah, but the stars are just as beautiful."

I sat down next to her and stared at the stars too. After a few minutes there was a streak of light across the sky and Kagome squealed," Look! A shooting star!"

"So?"

"Make a wish!"

I turned to look at her but she was sitting with her eyes closed, concentrating on something very hard. I sighed and closed my eyes thinking of a wish.

I wish… I wish… for Kagome to forgive me…

Suddenly a loud bang erupted and a bright red light illuminated through my closed eyelids. Kagome screamed at the sound and grabbed my arm, squeezing it tightly.

My eyes snapped open and they focused on her huddling against my arm as if a bomb had just gone off.

"Um, Kagome? It was just the fireworks."

"Oh…" Her eyes drifted open and stared at the now illuminated sky.

She gasped and said," Wow! It's so beautiful."

(A/N: Okay! This is SOOOOOOOO cheesy! But it makes me all fuzzy inside EVERY time!)

I was still staring at her and I said to myself," Yeah… you are…"

Only thing is that it came out of my mouth for Kagome to hear. She looked to me and I felt myself blush.

" Uh- I mean-! Uh… aw shit…"

She just stared at me for a while and I found myself wishing the ground would open up and swallow me whole. But the worst is when she started busting up.

I sat there staring at this girl who lay sprawled across the floor laughing at my attempt to tell her she's beautiful. I became angry and started standing up to leave but she grabbed the back of my shirt.

"I'm sorry! I'm sorry! It's just that-," she gave a few more giggles and I began walking away again but her grip tightened.

"I'm sorry!!! It was just so… CHEESY! I mean, I've heard that line in almost every romance movie I've ever seen."

"Well… maybe they show it in every movie because it's always true."

She stood up still smiling and faced me. I marveled at how beautiful she was; half of her face was illuminated by the red and gold light of the fireworks and the other half was hidden in shadow but her beauty still shone through.

She walked up closer to me, still smiling.

Her face was inches away from mine and I felt my heartbeat race.

What was she doing? What the HELL was she doing????

KAGOME:

I feel like I've known him forever, and he just reminded me of something I like very much.

I stood on my toes and kissed him softly on the lips. He just stood there for a few seconds before his arms snaked around my waist and he returned the kiss as softly as I had given it. Then a light, way brighter than any of the fireworks, shone from…

… beneath my kimono?

He broke the kiss an stared at the top of my kimono," What's that?"

I felt my heart race as I looked down and pulled out the Shikon No Tama.

Oh no! Oh no, no, no!!! This must mean… Kenji is my true love?

~@~

INU:

I stared in bewilderment as she kept looking at the pink orb as if it told her something very unexpected.

She then looked up and our eyes connected.

We stood like that for while, in which the fireworks had ended, before two very familiar voices floated our way.

"KAGOME! There you are! Who's your friend?"

I looked over to see Sango and Miroku jogging to meet us. I admit it, I panicked.

"Uh… look Kagome… I've got to-uh-find my little sister. She ran off and I forgot all about her when I ran into you. I'm really sorry. Maybe we'll meet again."

I ran down the hill and hid myself in the crowd.

End of chapter.
