Chapter 9 - Target Sighted
The next morning, Kiyoshi woke up and the rest of the group was already wide-awake, as usual. They were sitting there, eating breakfast, which was basically leftovers from dinner the night before. He scooted closer to the fire and was handed a bowl of food. He ate his food lethargically, he was still half asleep, but amazingly, he didn't spill a bit. After a bowl or two, or three, or four, he woke up, and started eating wholeheartedly. It was a little tradition between Inuyasha and Kiyoshi to have an eating contest in the morning, though the victor would seesaw between the two. One morning, Inuyasha might win, but then the next day, Kiyoshi would win. Nothing new.
They went through their usual eating contest and scarfed down several bowls of food. Sango and Miroku sat there as if it was nothing, which it was to them. But Shippo had never before witnessed such an event. He watched in awe as the two ate bowl after bowl after bowl of strew, neither one slowing down for anything, except to get their bowls refilled. Shippo ended up barely eating one bowl of the stew.
When there was no more food left, Kiyoshi and Inuyasha sat back satiated and happy. Well, almost happy. "How many bowls did you eat? I counted more than 13 for me." Inuyasha said proudly.
Kiyoshi sat back and began mentally counting, using his fingers for assistance. "Hm…15 I think."
"15? Geez, K'Yosh, you're losing you're touch. I remember you used to be able to eat 17." Miroku said.
"15?!" Inuyasha exclaimed. That was a lot. "Geez, Miroku's right. You are losing your touch." He covered up.
"Well, you ain't exactly in a good position to criticize, Mr. 13. " Kiyoshi retorted.
"I said more than 13, you dumb-dumb." Inuyasha replied.
"No you didn't," he said. Sango and Miroku sighed. The usual morning argument. Again nothing new, though Shippo still watched with awe and astonishment.
"Yes, I did." he replied.
"No you didn't!"
"Yes I did!"
"No you didn't!"
"Yes I did!"
"No you didn't!"
"Yes I did!"
"NO YOU DIDN'T!"
"YES I DID!"
"NO YOU DIDN'T!"
"YES I DID!"
"NO YOU DIDN'T!"
"YES I DID!"
"ENOUGH!" came Sango and Miroku's voice. Their argument had gone on long enough.
Shippo sat there in astonishment as the two stopped arguing and settled for glaring daggers at each other. If you hadn't seen the fore-brought argument, you would have thought that they were in a staring contest or they were statues. He kept looking back and forth between the two, blinking in confusion. He had seen the two argue, of course, but never like this. He looked at Sango and Miroku. They were keeping the supplies for departure. They took it as if it was nothing, like what they had just witnessed was more common than the sky being blue.
Shippo ran up to Sango and Miroku and whispered them while looking warily at the glaring pair, he asked, "Are they always like this?"
They gave the two a look. Then looked back at Shippo. "Yup." They replied in unison. Shippo gave a small `oh'. He went back and stared at Inuyasha and Kiyoshi.
The three stayed like that until Miroku said, "Are you planning to stay there all day and glare at each other?" the glaring two snapped out of their trance and got up to get their things while saying, "Coming!"
Shippo was just plain confused. He said hastily as the wandering quartet departed, "Hey! Wait for meeee!"

Time wore on and things became another monotonous routine. Shippo quickly became accustomed to the daily arguments from Inuyasha and Kiyoshi, the daily gropings and lechery from Miroku, the daily beating of Sango on Miroku. Yeah, things were going pretty okay. That was until one day while they walked through the woods.
The group was traveling like it usually did. Inuyasha traveling from tree to tree, while Kiyoshi walked in front (both completely ignoring each other), Sango not too far behind him with Hiraikotsu close at hand in case of Miroku. Shippo stayed at the rear with Miroku, to keep him company.
They were traveling in an area that was forest, but was near enough to the mountains to see the sides of the cliffs and mountain paths. They weren't interested in those; they kept it simple and stuck to the flat terrain.
As they passed one of the many paths and cliffs, Kiyoshi stopped dead in his tracks, causing Sango to almost bump into him. Luckily, she was far back enough to notice that he'd stopped. The rest of the group stopped as well, and crowded around Kiyoshi. Inuyasha jumped down from the tree and demanded what was the problem. "Why the hell did you stop?"
He cast a wary look around as he raised his guard. "Don't you feel like someone's been watching us?"
The group fell silent and did the same as Kiyoshi. As soon as the group fell quiet, so did the forest. An eerie blanket of silence covered the forest. No birds sang, no foliage rustled, nothing. All that the group could hear was the steady increasing of their pulse, ringing loud in their ears.
Sango raised her Hiraikotsu, ready to be thrown at any moment, while Miroku brought out his staff in front of him, ready to defend. Inuyasha's hand rested on the hilt of Tetsuiaga, drawing it out a little bit so that the light shown on the reflected metal. Kiyoshi silently re-strung his bow, and drew out one arrow and readied it to be fired. They all stood in a defensive position, muscles tense, ready to spring at any moment (except for Shippo, who cowered and buried his face in Kiyoshi's leg). Standing back to back in a circle, so that they could see from all directions.
"Who could it be?" Sango whispered hoarsely to the air.
"Show your self, coward! Come out and fight instead of hiding in the brush!" Inuyasha yelled haughtily.
"As you wish," a cold, mocking voice replied. Suddenly, a dark blur burst from the bushes and leapt into the air. Stopping in the area above the group, it stopped and spun before heading to the ground. It was aimed directly for the gap that was between the group members.
"MOVE!" Miroku yelled and the group dispersed in all directions as the blur made contact with the ground. A large sound was heard as he made contact and earthy debris went flying everywhere. Pebbles, rocks and dirt rained on the group as they tried to see who their opponent was.
The assault on the ground had made a large crater in the ground. As the dust cleared, the group could now see who was in the center, and who had made the crater. A lone figure stood amongst the crumbling earth. As the dust cleared, they could see exactly who it was. The thing in the center stood proudly, as if that crater was just a glimpse of what he could really do. His skin was snow white, with a tint of green. His shocking green eyes were slitted, and his hair was dark and also tinted green. Overall, he didn't look like a very nice person. He launched himself into the air again and looked down at them arrogantly.
Inuyasha sniffed the air and said in disgust, "Blech. Chameleon youkai." Making a motion with his head, he indicated to his friends to leave. "Come on, this weakling isn't worth our time."
"Weakling, huh? And what would a dirty little half-breed hanyou like you know about who's strong, and who's weak?" he said mockingly.
Inuyasha growled. "I know enough to know that you ain't worth the time of day! You probably couldn't even win against Sango here." He jerked a thumb in Sango's direction.
"Are you implying something, Inuyasha?" she said, turning to face him.
"Now's not the time, Sango and Inuyasha." Miroku said, never once taking his gaze of off his opponent.
"I might not be the strongest, but I will be once I get the Shikon no Tama!" with this, he launched himself at Kiyoshi.
