InuYasha Fan Fiction ❯ An Ookami's Grudge ❯ Prologue: The night of the 'New Moon' ( Prologue )

[ Y - Young Adult: Not suitable for readers under 16 ]
Disclaimer: I do not Own Inuyasha or any related Characters. Inubiki is a creation of my own mind.
Author’s Note: The prologue is set at the beginning of the 3rd Inuyasha Movie. Some of it may be off from the script, but that’s because it’s been a while since I have sat down and watched it, and I have the Japanese version, so some of the commentary may sound weird, but I’ve attempted to make it flow a little better… Of course, stuff HAS been added to explain where Inubiki came from.
Author’s Note 2: I’m currently trying to rework this so it flows better, please have patience. Once I’m happy with the first few chapters, I will continue the story. Thank you for your continued patience.
Author’s Note 3: PLEASE REVIEW!!!

Prologue: The Night of the New Moon

The wind blew along the snow covered beach picking up particles of sand and snow while the icy surf crashed upon the shore. Two lone figures stood upon the dunes of the beach, several yards between them. Both tall and possessing of an ethereal beauty no mortal man could hold; the wind playing with their long silver tresses and the thick furs that draped their backs.

Ignoring the wind whipping through his hair and drawing it past his face, the young younger of the pair regarded the older with cold indifference; the markings on his sleeves indicating his rank as heir of the Western Youkai Territories. “You intend on going, Chichiue?”

Without turning to look over his shoulder, the current Lord lowered his head slightly, saddened by the cold tone of his son, and silently wishing his boy took more after himself than his mother. “Would you try to stop your own father, Sesshoumaru?” he inquired, his voice, while soft, giving no more indication of his emotions then his son’s had.

“No. I won’t stop you.” The heir replied, turning his gaze away from his father to look out over the sea for a moment, before returning his gaze to Inu no Taishou. “However, I would that you give me Sou’unga and Tetsuseiga first.”

Lifting his head, yet still not looking at his son, the older youkai asked “And if I say no, would you kill your own Father?” The silence behind him wasn’t entirely surprising, although it was disheartening. “Do you truly desire power that much, my son? Why is it you seek such destructive power?”

“For my tyranny to begin, power is necessary,” was the simple, short, and emotionless reply from the younger inu.

“Conquest, Sesshomaru? Is there nothing you wish to Protect?” The words echoed across the silent sands of the beach as a crab skittered through the icy water crashing upon the shore at the feet of the two inu.

Beside the sound of the crashing surf, the only thing that disturbed the current silence was the steady sound of the older youkai’s blood dripping from his fingertips towards a growing puddle upon the ground, melting the snow. The injury producing the blood would heal in time, if he gave his body the chance to heal, but the old dog knew this night would be his last.  He did not have the time to wait for the injury to heal.

Sesshomaru, for the first time, showed a single flash of emotion. It was not much, just a second’s worth of thought reflected across his eyes. “Something … to Protect?” If he’d been the type, he would have snorted at his father’s question. Lifting his arm, he prepared to strike his father at his father, the tips of his claw-like nails giving off a faint and eerie green glow. “I have no need to pursue such a meaningless endeavor.” He finally replied in a cold tone.

Before the Heir could follow through with his planned attack, though, the Great Lord transformed into a great beast that the humans could only describe as a massive and towering dog. Without another word to his eldest child, the great hound rushed away through the trees toward a palace settled on the edge of a river.

Mi les away from the beach at a beautiful palace settled in the middle of a forest and at the edge of a river, warriors and priests gathered to protect the building and the precious entity inside. This was the home of a much loved hime, whose mere smile could gladden the hearts of those around her. She was kind to everyone, even the lowliest of servants. She had many suitors, but only one had taken her heart.

The one that her subjects feared most, and the sire of the offspring she was about to give birth to.

The great dog demon only known to the humans as Inu no Taishou.

One suitor in particular was hurt the most by the princess’ choice, feeling she had sullied herself by choosing and lying with the demon. None of them had known until her belly began to round, though. For as much as the soldier loved his princess, the child was an abomination and unnatural in his eyes, and he knew both the birth and the demon that was surely on his way had to be stopped. The princess’ soul had to be saved.

Removing his helmet and tucking it under one arm as he turned from the front gate, the soldier made his way through the halls of the palace. It was taboo for any man to be in the same chamber with a woman giving birth, and one of the princess’ servants attempted to stop him, informing him that the princess had already begun labor.

One could not say he was heartless; the soldier assured the servant that all would be fine… before he ran the poor old woman through with his naginata – a staff-like weapon with a blade upon the end. He assured the dying servant that she had done all she could, then turned and entered the princess’ chamber.

Reaching the Princess’ chamber, he moved inside quietly, kneeling next to the elaborate curtain the hid the princess from the eyes of anyone who might by chance be in the chamber as well.

“Who’s there?” asked the princess in a soft toned voice, that while pained with labor was still like a summer’s song – filled with beauty, light and hope.

“It is I, Takemaru of Setsuna.” The soldier replied at her question, keeping his head bowed, his helmet having come to rest upon the floor.

Relieved to hear who now gave her company, she gave a pain-filled smile to the man through the curtain. “Takemaru? Oh, thank goodness.” She said before wincing from the pain of a contraction. “Please. You must lead the people from here. Their lives are not yet finished. Protect them.” She begged softly, lifting a hand towards him.

Assuring his princess that her subjects would be all right, he responded simply: “My feelings will never change.” Closing his eyes, he lifted his weapon and drove the blade through her chest. It was not an instant kill, but he knew she would die from it; standing, he settled his helmet upon his head and withdrew his weapon from the now dying princess’ form.

His progress to the door was only stopped for a moment by the sharp cry of an infant, which soon faded off as well, just as the moon over the line of trees darkened to black. He turned from the dying woman and child as the roar of his enemy drew near and announced his presence. He rushed out to the courtyard in time to witness a mighty blast from the demon blow the gate asunder.

Tossing the naginata aside, he withdrew his kitana from his hip and met the demon head on. He ignored the taunts and accusations the demon threw at him as they fought, slinging several of his own before the demon called him an idiot. Takemaru did not see the coming attack until it was too late, and his left arm (his weapon arm!) fell to the ground.

Taking a step back in shock, he grasped his severed stump of an arm and gritted his teeth as the demon turned tail and darted into the palace. “Cast the flames! Burn him to hell!” He ordered the archers. There were shocked cries of dismay at his order regarding the safety of their princess, to which he responded with “She cast her fate when she whelped with that demon’s brood!”

While not all willingly, the archers released their flaming arrows upon the house, alighting the once magnificent building with the heat and smoke of an unstoppable fire.

“Izayoi! Izayoi!” The youkai exclaimed, searching for any sign of the princess, the woman he had taken as his second Mate. He soon found her lifeless body surrounded by flames, as the curtains ‘protecting’ her had already became fodder for the fire. Ignoring the burning the flames, he grasped the frame supporting those very curtains and tossed it aside. “Izayoi..” He said again, this time in dismay. Was he too late?

Feeling the pulse from the ‘Fang of Heaven’, he withdrew Tenseiga from its sheath at his side and focused. He glared at the imps who’d come to take the princess and his half-blood child away to Izanami’s realm and swung without mercy, killing the creatures with one swing.

With color returning to her cheeks and her fatal injury now healed, Princess Izayoi’s eyes fluttered open and her head turned to gaze up at her lord. “Sire?” she inquired softly, sitting up and gathering her son to her chest as he started crying.

She swaddled the child in a length of fabric she tore from her bedclothes, then turned her gaze back up to the youkai. Opening her mouth to speak, she blinked with surprised when he simply withdrew a haori made from the fur of a fire rat and draped it over her shoulders and head.

The injured Takemaru stormed into the chamber then, his weapon held in his off hand. His eyes, burning with hatred, looked surprised at the sight of the living princess, only to focus once more on the demon.

The demon prepared to battle, knowing it would be his last. “Inuyasha.” He said firmly, suddenly, startling the two humans.

“What?” Takemaru demanded, his voice cold.

“The child’s Name. Inuyasha.” He said, more to Izayoi then to Takemaru. “Now run, Izayoi!” He commanded.

“H.. Hai!” The princess responded, gathering herself up and moving to exit the burning house. With a single glance back at him, she ran until she reached the far side of the bridge and was halfway up the snow covered hill, where she sadly watched the burning carcass of her home collapse on top of the man she loved, and the man who had betrayed her.

Turning her gaze down to the swaddled bundle in her arms, she frowned sadly, gently touching his cheek. “Inu...yasha...” She murmured softly, and her frown turned into a soft yet sad smile as she turned and made her way quickly away from the horrible scene.

Un beknownst to either of the fighters or even Izayoi, a lone servant moved through the trees on the far side of the palace, a swaddled bundle carried in the young woman’s arms. “You Poor thing,” She crooned to the bundle, whose eyes opened revealing beautiful golden orbs.
The child was silent, simply gazing up at her ‘savior’ with those golden orbs, not comprehending the situation going on around her.

Pausing in the forest, the servant looked back as the palace collapsed, a sad expression falling over her face. She had been one the princess’ personal servants and the one who’d helped Izayoi sneak away to be with Inu no Taishou whenever possible. Who was she to say ‘no’ to her princess, when Izayoi was in Love?

When the bundle in her arms had first been born, they had all thought the child was dead. So silent and still. Poor Izayoi, the pain she must have gone through to learn she’d given birth to a still born daughter. The servant prayed the second child, this little one’s twin, would be strong and healthy and had somehow managed to escape the flames. That someone, perhaps another servant who understood their princess’ love, would have taken pity on the child and taken it to safety.

“Come on, little one. We need to get out of here.” She said, and hurried on her way through the trees.
