InuYasha Fan Fiction ❯ Ancient Things ❯ AT Ch 4 ( Chapter 4 )

Kagome arched her back stretching, hands grasping into
the air she gasped as her back popped.
She settled back into her seat and watched the scenery
pass her by, they'd already been in the
car for nearly three hours, two more to go. Sota
believe it or not had fallen asleep after
playing his game boy for nearly the whole ride. He'd
been very relieved when she'd pulled it
from the pack and given it to him. The ride was silent
and she liked it, dusk was falling and
the scenery was breathtaking. She'd always loved the
drive. Anywhere, as long as she was
comfortable she was alright with a long drive. It gave
her time to think, to reflect.

She leaned back and put her knees up on the dashboard
in front of her leaning her head back. Her
CD player sat next to her in the holder while the cord
wound up her arm and deposited the soft
music into her ears. Her head lolled and her eyes
drooped. Her moms talk show radio played in the
background of her music. Sleep tucked at her and
Finlay she left the world of the wake and
joined her brother.

"..gome Kagome," Something was shaking her shoulder.
Her neck ached, her eyes opened slightly
and she was slightly disoriented and she blinked
owlishly at her mother.

"Wha.. What time is it?" She leaned forward and was
choked by her seat belt and head phones
that managed to get completely tangled in it. She
jerked back and rotated her shoulders
reaching for the buckle.

"Its around eleven. c'mon were at the hotel." Her
mother reached over and helped her fumbling
daughter with the seat belt.

"Thanks mom." Kagome slurred and opened the door. A
rush of cold air greeted her and she sighed
taking a breath of the refreshing atmosphere. She
turned and blinked owlishly at her mother
as she carried two duffel bags out of the car. Shaking
her self, she turned and opened the back
door eying her brother who was still sleeping
soundly. she did what she had been doing since
there dad had died even though he was getting a bit
big for it. Unbuckling him from the seat
she shrugged him in her arms, umphing at his weight
she rolled her eyes as he grunted but didn't
wake. The boy could sleep through a earthquake and had
in fact slept through an explosion once.

They were camped out on a bay once and an oil rig had
somehow exploded sending a fireball in the
sky. There dad had freaked and slammed out of his tent
yelling about being bombed. Sota had
snorted and rolled over continuing to sleep.

Kagome smiled. She had seen the fireball, being out
early fishing with her grandfather.
Her mother was in the tent with Sota at the time so
could relate the information to her.

She got him into the hotel room and dumped him into
the queen sized bed that she would share
with him. Kagome shuddered thanking the gods above
that he didn't wet the bed any longer. After
tucking him in she went to grab her own pack bypassing
her mom on her way to get some ice. "I
put Sota to bed."

"Alright, do you want a pop?" She smiled at her
daughter and threw a can of coke at her. "I'll
grab the ice, be right back." Kagome nodded and headed
back into the room.

Settling her stuff next to the bed she tapped the top
of the can and opened it over the sink it
fizzed a little and she grumbled. Soon Haruma claimed
exhaustion and climbed into her own bed
shutting the light off, and telling Kagome to not stay
up too long.

She shrugged and sat down at the dimly lighted table
near the largely drapped window. Kagome
shifted her eyes to her mothers brief case that was
was half hazardly opened she leaned
over and nabbed a folded map. It was the survey map of
the dig they were going to be at the next
day. A couple printed out pictures fell out of the map
on to the table. Eying them she picked
them up, carefully examining them.

There were four all together. One looked to be part of
a small item shrine. The door perhaps.
Kagome couldn't really make anything of the picture.
She flipped through them, another was of
some old bones She raised her eyebrows at that. The
last two were of the same thing though it
was still stuck in the ground. It looked like a very
old sword. The first picture of the sword
was the full view, the second was just of where it
connected to the ground.

'Kinda like Excalibur.' Kagome chuckled and finished
off her pop. She slipped the papers back
into the brief case and yawned. She changed into her
pajamas, brushed her teeth and clicked the
light off settling into bed. Well she'd see every
thing tomorrow. A thrill of excitement went
through her and she smiled.

Sun up came and they were on there way to the dig.
Kagome was excited, and so was her mother.
She could not wait the fifteen minute ride from the
hotel to the dig.

Every dig was different yet the same. Area's zoned off
to those working and exclusive areas her
mother and she were to go straight to a blue tapped
area. Kagome was so excited she forgot her
bag in the car.

Haruma and Kagome made there way carefully to the area
that Haruma was needed. A man steeped out
from behind a tarp that was keeping some of the light
breeze from messing with the area he was
digging. He was short but had a kick to his walk, kind
dark eyes shone with mischief and mirth.
He seemed to be in his middle fifties, bald head with
two splotches of hair on each side of his
face. Smile, worry, and other sort of creases marred
his face.

"Higurashi san." He smiled. "Ahh, Kagome, I haven't
seen you since you were this tall." The man
motioned with his hands and then He smiled at her.
Kagome fidgeted, trying to remember the kind
old man but failing. She smiled sheepishly at him
blushing. Her mother saved the day by bowing
respectively at him.

"Myoga-san. Please call me Haruma, It's good to see
you here. " Kagome bowed also at a loss
for anything other than scrunching her face up trying
to remember the old man.

"Haruma, well then call me Grandpa! Well lets get to
business. I see your already. Kagome do
you have a pack? I had thought that since you were
here you'd want to help and Where is that
boy of yours Haruma?"

Kagome blanched and smiled sheepishly. "I left my pack
in the jeep I'll be right back." She waved
turning to bolt.

Haruma smiled at her daughter and turned back to
Myoga. "Sota didn't feel well this morning, he
had a slight fever when he woke up so I made him stay
at the Hotel. He'll be fine he has his
video games to keep him occupied." She was startled to
see Myoga staring at her intently.

"How have they been?" He sighed. "I mean I'm terribly
sorry that I haven't really been there for
you but with things being the way they are with the
companies its been hard-" Haruma cut him off
by a hand on his arm.

"We've been good old man, very good." He mock glared
at her.

"Old man! Humph. You and your husband always giving me
trouble. So Kagomes really getting into it
is she?" He smiled meaningfully and patted her hand.
"C'mon lets get to it your daughter can
catch up."

Haruma cocked her head. "Isn't it here?"

"Of course not!" He admonished. His eyes taking on a
gleam that could only be known as: Myogas got
something up his sleeve and its probable going to be
interesting look. lovingly named by her
late husband and it made her heart pound with
excitement. "The real treasure is over here."
