I remember our last parting words, the unshed tears glistening in her eyes and threatening to fall at ay moment as she begged me to stay

with her. When she told me she loved me. But I couldn’t love her. It would be so hard for me. I cared for her a lot but it wasn’t love, not the kind she

wanted, and I told her so even though I knew it would hurt. For both of us. Still we were afraid, we might never see each other again and it was all I

could think about as I walked away from her. Feeling her saddened gaze upon my back a turned at the end of the dock and I smiled up at her. It

was hollow and she could tell it was forced, but I had tried and she smiled back. Her smile eased the tightening pain in my chest just a little and with

that I joined the others, falling into formation near the middle of one of the lines. When the order to march was given we started off at the brisk pace

that was set and would remain that way until we came into contact with the enemy forces. We walked for a long time and soon when I looked back, I

could no longer see the docks or even the sails of the ships.
