Chapter Eighty:

Born To Rule

Sesshomaru leaned back in his soft, feather stuffed chair, relaxed and slightly interested in the proceedings. The huge gathering of people listened with rapt curiosity to the speaker. With the throne room newly repaired and remodeled, inhabitants from far and wide had come to observe the new changes and the new crowned king.

A little flashy for his taste, Sesshomaru had conceded and worn the crown per the standards of this region.

Golden eyes wandered over to his mate.

Kagome had taken her place as queen with little difficulty. Her experience as the former Lady of the Northern lands came rushing to the forefront. She a was natural, and had the dwellers of the castle wrapped around her finger in a matter of days.

She sat in her newly designed throne on his right, her visage regal and welcoming.

Her dark hair was made up in a complex style of loops and twists, bouncing dark strands loose about her back and shoulders. Weaved into the maze of dark curls, was a stunning golden tiara littered with diamonds.

Her bodice was modestly cut, cinched tight at the waist and fanning out at the hips, the yards of light blue and silver fabric was vibrant and expensive.

His amber eyes moved to his left.

Rikimaru was seated in his miniature throne, doing his best to imitate the bored indifference of his father. His long silver hair was braided and lay against his shoulder, his white shirt crisp, dark pants neatly pressed and a small, golden, jewel encrusted crown sat perched upon his little head.

His pup had been a bit overwhelmed at the changes, having never been at a cognitive age when his parents had ruled in Japan.

He and Kagome had spoken little about their homeland with their offspring.

It led to painful memories and some equally agonizing truths too terrible for his young ears.

The people shifted, regaining his attention. They kneelled before him and his family, one arm crossed over their chests in a gesture of fealty, heads bowed in deference.

The speaker he had tuned out clicked his heels together.

“All hail the new king!” he bellowed, “Long live King Sesshomaru”

Cheers and shouts of well wishes rang out. The sounds bouncing off the stone walls. Sesshomaru shifted comfortably in his chair, pleasure crawling over his skin. He could not deny the ease with which leadership came to him. He was arrogant enough to admit that he had been born to rule.

Born, raised, groomed to lead and succeed.

Their remote home away from the world had served it's purpose and outlived its usefulness. He would cherish the memories he'd made there but looked forward to this new chapter of their lives.

A chapter he had not thought to revisit without the death of his father.

It was strange, when he thought of his sire, the ever present resentment he was used to accompanying the recollections had faded significantly.

While he still stood firm that his father had been wrong, he could understand the pain his father must have felt at his hands. The rejection, hostility and open hatred he'd shown his sire had to have been agony.

As close as Sesshomaru was to his own son, he knew it would tear his youkai heart to pieces should his pup show such disdain for him.

While InuTaisho had wronged him, he had damn well paid for it tenfold.

If he was honest with himself, he was more than ready to bury the hatchet with the demon and his hanyou brother. His prodding mate had had a monumental hand in pushing him to that conclusion. Bringing up the sad state of his relationships with his family back in Japan in the tender moments of the night, gently pushing him to speak of the painful experiences he'd gone through as a pup, uncovering things he'd rather die than admit to anyone else.

Truly, a remarkable woman that had burrowed under his skin, wrapped around his heart, and captured his soul.

It was scary, the depth of emotion he held for one female.

Scary and irreversible.

As if he'd ever want it any other way.

“The region has sworn it's allegiance, your majesty,” the speaker informed him.

Sesshomaru turned golden eyes to the room, taking in the hundreds of bowed heads.

“This assembly has conclude,” he informed the gathers.

“Yes, your majesty,” the crowed echoed, standing and parting.

Sesshomaru stood, his family following suit. The people stood in line on either sides of the red carpet, heads bowing as the new royal family passed.

The next morning saw Sesshomaru buried in paperwork and stuck with advisors and other prominent figures that ensured the kingdom ran smoothly. It was nothing he had not gone through before, though he had to admit, it was a larger undertaking than his previous territory, and a much more significant amount of wealth.

A sliver brow rose at the number of zeros in the financial records.

The gluttonous king had been greedy in more ways than one, though the managing left much to be desired. It would take five years in his estimation to clean up the mess.

A headache to be sure, but necessary.

“Sire, there is also the task of arranging your marriage to the unofficial queen,”

Sesshomaru continued to read the scribble on the tan parchment as he spoke, “She is my mate, what need is there for such an action?”

“The people here, a notable amount are human, and are not familiar with the ways of youkai mating,” he explained carefully, “It would put their minds at ease to have the union official,”

The room was silent as they waited for the king's response. It almost seemed as though he would ignore the request before he spoke again.

“So be it. The event is to take place as soon as can be organized, all details are to be discussed with my mate before implemented,” golden eyes met the dozen watching him, “If my mate is not happy with the arrangements, I will not be pleased,”

“Of course, your majesty,”

While he understood the logistics and necessity of appearances, he would set the tone here and now. His mate was his queen regardless of ceremonies and formalities. Any who did not realize the regard in which he held her, would find the end of their lives at the edge of his claws.

Seeing the bead of sweat on the man's head, Sesshomaru knew he had made himself crystal clear.

That done, he turned back to his reading material.

“Young Prince, please do not fuss so,” implored the young man, “your father is very busy. I'm sure we don't need to bother him right now,”

Rikimaru glanced at the male.

Father was indeed busy. A lot busier than he was used to. Mother as well. He wasn't used to this, wasn't sure he liked it. He had too much time on his hands and nothing with which to occupy them.

He looked back at the man.

Timothy was a really nervous guy, who seemed to be laboring under the naive impression that he was made of glass or something. He wasn't sure if he should inform the human male that he was ten times stronger than him and surely more durable.

The man didn't seem to know much about youkai children.

It was kind of funny.

He wondered how much trouble he'd be in if he had some...fun at the expense of the youth that had taken to following him around.

“A wedding?” Kagome questioned.

“Yes, your majesty,” the man confirmed, “the king has just given his approval and has commanded that all proceedings be approved by you before implementation,”

Kagome was more than a little surprised, pleasantly surprised. Her hands went to her flushed checks, and a shocked smile curled her lips. Her own mating celebration had not been the fairy tale event she'd always dreamed of but she had never thought she'd get another chance to make her dreams a reality.

“May I send in the planners, majesty?” the man probed after a few moments.

“Oh, right!,” she said removing her hands, “yes of course, send them in,”

The male bowed, arm crossed over his chest before turning to open the double doors of the study.

Kagome set aside the documents she'd been reading through.

Sesshomaru had been surprisingly receptive when she'd informed him that she would also take on the responsibility of ruling and maintaining the kingdom. That she wanted an equal role here in this new land.

Her stoic mate had merely inclined his head in agreement, and ordered the paperwork split between him and his queen. He'd even gone a step further in ordering construction of a bigger study to accommodate them both, stating the running of the land would be smoother if they were in the same room.

She couldn't agree more with his reasoning, and was excited about the new arrangements.

She giggled.

The look on the face of the staff at Sesshomaru's demand had been priceless. The men had looked uncomfortable with the arrangement, while more than one woman had cheered silently from the shadows.

The planners, four women and one male swept into the room, large rolled scrolls and writing utensils in hands.

Kagome stood, determined excitement on her face.

Who ever said dreams didn't come true?

~~~~~~~~~~~~
“Young Prince no!” Timothy cried, nervously gripping and twisting his fingers.
The small pup had climbed up onto the high railing of the pens containing the exotic pets of the late King Randolph. He leaned over, looking down at the white growling tigers circling near the gate.
Rikimaru ignored the man, too fascinated with the rumbling beasts to heed any warnings.
He'd never seen the like before.
The creatures that roamed their previous home were more grotesque, looking as though several different animals had been fused together. These giant cats looked soft, sleek and majestic.
Rikimaru threw one leg over the top of the rail.
He needed to get a closer look at them.
“Young Prince!” Timothy exclaimed, sounding near hysterics.
Rikimaru glanced back at the worried human.
“What is it Tim?” he questioned, boredom clear in his tone.
“Do not go in there! It is forbidden! Those tigers are dangerous!”
Rikimaru sat on the fence, one leg in, one out. He crossed his arms and leaned to the side, the motion sending blood rushing from Timothy's face.
“But I want to get a closer look at them,” Rikimaru informed him.
Timothy shook his hard.
Hard enough, Rikimaru wondered how it stayed attached to his neck.
“Out of the question, young master!”
Rikimaru met the man's panicked stare for a moment, amusement coiling in the pit of his gut. Maintaining a blank stare, he kept his eyes locked on Tim as he shifted, swinging his other leg over the gate.
“Young Prince!!!” Timothy burst out, rushing to the chain link fence.
Rikimaru blinked at the arms that reached out for him. He moved his body further into the pen, his little hands the only thing keeping him from falling into the tiger den. He couldn't help but burst into fits of giggles at the man on the other side.
He was screaming and waving his arms, his bellows coming from lungs refusing to draw proper breath.
It was a hilarious sight.
Rikimaru frowned when the man's warnings and pleas became cries for help. The guards would be here in no time and he was sure they'd tell mother and father of his antics. Golden eyes rolled.
He was in trouble already, might as well go all the way.
He let go of the fence.
~~~~~~~~~~~

The sky was bright and blue. The wind blew gently, shifting the green blades of grass. It was quiet and serene, the area free of prying eyes.

InuYasha lay in the grass, a sack of fruit next to him. Eyes closed, arms behind his head, he enjoyed the tranquility and the mild temperature. The Southern lands was usually sweltering and he had yet to adjust to the extreme heat.

His ear twitched at the sound of shuffling.

He knew who it was well before the scent reached his nose.

Yamiko took a seat next to him, lying back in the soft grass with a huff. The two were quiet a while. Yamiko shifting in the bag for his share of the yellow fruit. The sound of crunching and chewing broke the serenity.

Both men growled low.

Yamiko's brow twitched in irritation, while InuYasha's ears shifted in agitation.

“Your sister is a pain in the ass!”

“Your mate is a pain in the ass!”

They both growled at each other, nose to nose in an instant.

“She's your sister, tell her to chill out!”

Yamiko scuffed.

“What makes you think I can do anything? Besides, you're the one that tied themselves to her! You talk to her!”

InuYasha scratched his head in confused irritation.

“She's even worse with me! Do you know how painful it is to have your ears pulled and yelled into?!”

Yamiko shrugged.

“Don't say I didn't warn you before hand!”

InuYasha chuckled sardonically.

“Yeah if you call punching me in the nuts and telling me I ain't smart enough for your sister is a warning,”

Golden eyes rolled.

Yamiko glared.

“Of course it was a warning, we're friends,”

“In your dreams kitten!”

“Oh shut up dog breath!”

Silence again as the two turned away from each other.

“What's her problem anyway?” Yamiko asked.

InuYasha's face turned bright red, glowing brighter than the son. Yamiko's brows lowered in confusion at the reaction.

“You don't want to know, trust me,” InuYasha mumbled, staring down at his booted feet.

Yamiko glared.

“The fuck does that mean?” he demanded, “Your mate is up my ass more than usual and I want to know why. Maybe then I can figure out how to get her to back off,”

InuYasha stared harder at his feet.

Seeing he had no intention of telling him anything, he stood, dusting off his hakamas as he straightened.

“Fine then, guess I'll have to ask her myself,”

“No wait!”

Yamiko crossed his arms.

“I'm waitin' mutt,”

InuYasha gulped, pushing and pulling his index fingers together and apart over and over in nervousness.

“Well?!”

InuYasha mumbled something under his breath.

Yamiko leaned down, impatient.

“What?! Speak up asshole!”

“Jolicia wants...a......ba.....”

“A what?”

Angry, InuYasha glared up at the male.

“Your sister wants a baby!”

Yamiko stared down at the hanyou in surprise. Horror filled his face as the words sank in.

“A-a what???” he bellowed, “Is she crazy?!”

InuYasha turned away again, blushing furiously.

“Why in the hell would she want a kid???”

“She's been going on and on about Sango and Miroku's daughter. Ever since that kid made it's way into the world, its been non stop baby talk,” InuYasha grumbled.

Yamiko's mouth hung open.

He was stunned, just stunned.

His baby sister, a mother? The thought was unfathomable. His sister was as maternal as a rock. She didn't know the first thing of gentleness and nurturing. She was as rough around the edges as her mate!

The two of them as parents would be a disaster!

He shuddered at thought of little Jolicia's running around. The spawns of terror would tear the Southern lands apart!

“Did you tell her hell no?”

“Of course I did!”

“And???”

His face reddened even more, a feat Yamiko had thought impossible. Golden eyes glued to dark boots again.

InuYasha mumbled something beneath his breath again.

“What???”

“She cut me off until further notice,”

Yamiko dry heaved in horror, retching noises filled the air. Just the though of his little sister getting in on with anyone was enough to turn his stomach. Hands on his knees he held back bile.

“You....idiot!” he groan between retches, “Why....the fuck....would you tell me that! That's my sister you pig!”

“You're the one who asked!” InuYasha fired back, face replicating a cherry.

“You could have kept it to yourself or made up something less vomit inducing!”

InuYasha scowled at the male, turning away with his arms crossed.

“Fuck you, don't ask if you can't handle it,”

Yamiko collapsed on his side.

“You're disgusting,” he said.

Having had more than enough of the bastard, InuYasha kicked him in the head, shaking a fist at him.

“Shut the hell up! Next time I won't tell you anything! Next time ask Jolicia and see what the hell you get!”

With a humph, InuYasha stood and stormed off.

Yamiko listened to his retreating steps. He turned on his back and watched the male retreat.

“Idiot!” he called out as the silver haired male disappeared.
