Akitoki Houjo sighed as he stared up at the moon, wistfully remembering when it had been full for several days in a row, and the adventure he had taken part of because of it.
`Kagome...' he thought, the image of her face in his mind bringing warmth to his heart. Suddenly, the roar of some demon off in the distance jerked him out of his reverie and back to the task at hand. Adjusting the sword on his back he broke into a run.
“And now I guess it's time for another adventure,” he said breathlessly, stopping to rest when he was sure that the danger had passed.
Now that Mt. Hakurei had been destroyed, Akitoki was making his way to Edo, the only place he could think of where there might be people that could help him. He'd been traveling for days, and it was getting difficult to evade the demons that were drawn to the jaki of the Blade of Heaven.
Not to mention the difficulty in the traveling itself. Akitoki had always been rather clumsy, but the Blade of Heaven was said to bring misfortune to whoever possessed it. In the last day alone he had tripped on a hidden root, gotten a splinter, and nearly choked on a sip of water from a river.
After stubbing his toe on a rock, Akitoki was tempted to throw the blade at the next demon that happened to find him and rid himself of its bad luck.
“I can't do this!” He'd yelled at the empty forest, feeling exhausted and frightened and alone, but then he felt supremely guilty for being so selfish, remembering his duty to his family, and the horrible things that the blade could do in the hands of a demon.
Finally, as dawn broke, Akitoki found himself in the outskirts of Edo. He could almost feel that Kagome was close by. Crossing a bridge near the village, a few thugs accosted him, trying to take away the Blade of Heaven. Akitoki panicked, lamenting over the lengths he had gone to protecting the blade and how close he had come to his destination, when he saw something that calmed his fears and made his heart nearly burst with excitement.
Kagome. `Maybe I can do this after all,' he thought with a smile as he felt his tense muscles relax, and Inuyasha made quick work of the thugs, `With Kagome, I feel like I can do anything.'
