Prologue

 

Beyond the tranquil pond the sun sat near the horizon. Kagome sighed to herself. Things like this never happened in her time, there was always the murmur of cars or machinery in the background. But here there was just the birds and crickets…'crack, crunch'…Inuyasha.

 

Sighing again, Kagome heard the half dog demon walk up behind her.

 

“What are you doing way out here?” Inuyasha grumbled.

 

“I'm watching the sunset,” Kagome said. “It's so calm and peaceful.”

 

“Feh!” Inuyasha remarked as he crossed his arms and turned from her. “Stupid wench,” he said under his breath.

 

Hearing his comment Kagome titled her head towards him. “Inuyasha,” she spoke in the sweetest voice.

 

Perking his ears towards her voice, he said “what?”

 

“Osuwari.” Kagome spoke with girlish laughter.

 

“Chikusho!” Inuyasha screamed. “What was that for?”

 

“For not having any manners,” Kagome chided. “Now come have a seat by me and watch the sunset.”

 

Inuyasha grumbled again as he scooted by Kagome. The sunset was nice, but being by Kagome was even nicer. Tilting his head ever so slightly he took in her profile. So similar Kikyo's, yet so different. And her scent! Sometimes it took all his willpower not to give in to her.

 

“What is it?” Kagome asked, looking at him.

 

Inuyasha started, suddenly realizing he'd been staring. A flush crept to his cheeks and he abruptly crossed his arms and looked the other way and said, “nothing.”

 

Kagome looked forward again, a small smile playing at her lips. Why do I feel this way when I'm with him, she thought to herself. It's like I'm flying in the clouds. Turning away from him, she felt the color rising on her face. Am I in love with him, she wondered?

 

On a sudden whim Kagome jumped up, accidentally smacking Inuyasha as she rose.

Inuyasha scrambled onto his haunches, glaring at her, pointing to the handprint on his right cheek. “ What was that for?”

 

Looking over at Inuyasha with embarrassment, “Gomen, Inuyasha, but I just got a great idea!”

 

Inuyasha continued to glare at her.

 

“Let's go swimming!” Kagome said excitedly as she began to dig through her backpack.

 

Flopping backwards, Inuyasha gave her a “huh” expression before something was flung at his face. As he removed it, he saw Kagome dart off behind some trees.

 

Yelling back at him “there's your swimsuit, and you better not peek while I'm changing.”

Inuyasha looked at the oddly colored fabric and thought to himself, `crazy wench, on second thought you're nothing like Kikyo', Growling with annoyance, he too trudged to the trees the change into the strange “sweemsoot” thing.

The sky was a deep shade of purple and orange as Kagome stepped from the privacy of the trees. Inuyasha was nowhere in sight.

 

“Inuyasha,” Kagome called out.

 

There was no reply. With an inward sigh, Kagome walked to the waters edge, dumping her other clothes by the backpack. “Inuyasha,” she called again, but only the chirping of crickets answered her. There was no sign of him. Kagome stepped into the water wondering why she suddenly felt such strong disappointment. Closing her eyes she took in the sensation of the cool water lapping against her legs…but…what was that? That's not the water, a voice in her head yelled. Cringing, Kagome began to back away as something grabbed her from beneath the water. She was pulled under.

Inuyasha was getting her back for making him do this swimming thing. And for wearing these strange coverings. The wench was going to pay!

 

He watched as Kagome reappeared from the trees and called out his name, the grinned wickedly as she stepped into the water. `I am a demon after all,' he thought as he submerged under the water. Finding her in the water wasn't hard, and he pulled her under.

 

Kagome struggled in his grasp until her eyes came upon him in the moonlit waters.

Inuyasha watched as first her eyes widened, then narrowed right before her foot made contact with her chest.

 

Kagome surfaced and started for the shore when clawed Finns grabbed her tightly around the waist. She turned suddenly and was inches from Inuyasha's face. His wet hair gleaming in the moonlight. Both went still, the air suddenly becoming thick. Inuyasha's eyes glimmered with an inner glow as Kagome looked at him. Her heart began to race as emotions welled up inside her. His arms around her felt so safe, so inviting…

 

Inuyasha's mind raced as Kagome unexpectedly turned towards him, their bodies touching, faces just inches apart. He could close that distance he thought suddenly, the impulse almost overtaking him. Breathing deeply, he took in Kagome's intoxicating scent, ` oh how I love that smell,' he thought. Taken aback by this realization, he suddenly let go and went back to shore.

 

Kagome stood watching Inuyasha's expression tell the story of his innermost thoughts when he suddenly let go and left her alone in the pond.

 

The moment gone, Kagome raised hands to hips and commenced with punishment.

“Sit, sit, sit, sit, sit!” Kagome commanded as the rosary sent Inuyasha to the ground over and over again.

 

“Dammit wench!” Inuyasha screamed when he was finally able to to stand. “I was just paying you back for these,” pointing to the bright yellow and orange shorts. Kagome quickly closed the distance between them waving her finger angrily; “didn't you ever learn any manners, Inuyasha?”

 

Inuyasha, eyes wide, bowing back from Kagome's assault, cringed. “Feh, I was just getting you back…”

 

Still wagging her fingers, “ feh? Feh?” Kagome suddenly grabbed Inuyasha's ears and pulled him to the waters edge, the shoved him in. “Feh!” she said once more as she turned for her backpack.

 

Two clawed hands once again reached out and yanked her into the water.

 

Kagome found herself face to face with Inuyasha in the moonlit waters again.

 

Her heart began to pound fiercely in her chest as Inuyasha's grasp on her tightened slightly. She became acutely aware of just how alone they were in the night. Gazing deeply into the half-dog demons fiery eyes she felt her chest tighten.

 

Inuyasha held Kagome fast, realizing he couldn't let her go. He drank in her sweet scent mixed with that of the night, and felt lightheaded. His pulse raced as he looked into her eyes, wide and all encompassing as the see. Without realizing, his hand ran through he soft hair. Bending down to take in her hair fragrance, he found himself just an inch from her beautiful face. Kagome's eyes shut as Inuyasha began to run fingers through her hair.

 

The anxiety in her turned to a peaceful calm. She knew now, more than anything that she did love him. That despite all the bickering all this time, he had grown on her heart.

Inuyasha held for a moment as he looked into the face of all desire itself. He did love her, deny it as he may, it was true. And she was so near. He closed the gap.

From the trees watchful eyes gazed upon the budding couple and narrowed. It begins…
