Chapter 4

Another Companion

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~
I used to think you were crazy,
When you were hooked to the screen.
But now they tell me that you're in a better place
But where did you go?
And i swear sometimes you're watching over me
Still i'd give the world for the chance
Just to see your face again.
While Kagome slept, Inuyasha told Miroku of what had happened so far. He took a while for it all to sink in before he spoke. "It seems that I'm now involved in this search for lost memories." Miroku said.
"What do you mean?" Inuyasha asked.
"There are times when I hear an muffled voice calling to me. It's never been clear enough to where I can understand what they're saying. I've had dreams where I'm in the darkness and it seems someone wants to call out to me, but they cannot speak." Miroku explained. "I do not remember much of my past either."
"You don't?"
"No, all I remember is waking up one day washed up on a river shore. A man named Mushin found me and had taken care of me until I left. When I woke up I knew everything about being a monk, but nothing else. I knew my name and that something was missing." Miroku said. "Yours and Kagome-sama's auras are familiar. Like I've met you before."
"That seems like what happened to Kagome and I." Inuyasha said.
"If you wouldn't mind, I'd like to accompany you on your travel to solve this mystery." Miroku said.
"You'd have to talk to Kagome. I'm only doing this because of her." Inuyasha said.
"Ah, yes, you two seem very close for people who've only met days ago. If I'm not mistaken, you have some attraction towards each other." Miroku smiled.
"We barely met. I'm not attracted to her." Inuyasha looked away from the monk.
"Your actions say otherwise. Don't worry I won't say a thing to Kagome-sama. Although I'm sure she feels the same." Miroku said.
"Do you think so?" Inuyasha asked giving himself away.
"She seems to rely on you, even though she hates to. You can tell by the look in her eyes." Miroku smiled. One little thing and he got Inuyasha to tell him everything.
Inuyasha and Miroku both went into Kagome's room when they finished talking to check on her. She was already up and trying to bandage her wound. It proved difficult since she was sitting down and trying to reach her leg. Inuyasha walked over and grabbed the bandages from her.
"I told you to call me if you needed something." He said as he tended to her leg.
"I didn't want to bother you." Kagome said.
"Do you feel better?" Miroku asked.
"Hai."
"Miroku wants to come with us." Inuyasha said.
"You do?"
"It seems I am also involved with your journey. I have nothing better to do anyway." Miroku explained.
"What about the temple?"
"I was only needed for the main building part. Since there isn't much left to finish, I won't be needed any longer." Miroku said. "Besides, accompanying a beautiful woman is much better."
Kagome blushed and nodded. "It would be nice to have you come along." She said.
Inuyasha glared at Miroku. He started to have second thoughts about bringing him along. Maybe it wasn't such a good idea to let a lecherous monk travel with them. Then Kagome would be angry with him and then he'd have to come up with a reason why he can't come. He wasn't sure of why himself.
"How are we going to find the next place?" Kagome asked. "None of those images are familiar to me."
Inuyasha shrugged his shoulders. "I may know where it is." Miroku said as he joined them on the floor.
"You do?" Kagome asked.
"Hai, I think it was my home village. Although I won't be sure until we get there." Miroku said.
"Let's go anyway. It's not like we have any other clues." Kagome said.
"How long does it take to get there?" Inuyasha crossed his arms and placed them in his sleeves.
"About two days or so depending on how fast we travel." Miroku said.
"You don't live far from here? Did you just start traveling?" Inuyasha asked.
"No, I stopped by for some...help." Miroku said.
"Help?" Kagome asked.
"It's nothing." Miroku assured. "So, when should we leave?"
"It doesn't matter to me." Kagome said.
"I think leaving tomorrow is best. It seems Kagome-sama should rest a little longer just in case." Miroku said.
"No need to be so formal." Kagome said.
"Then we'll leave tomorrow." Inuyasha said.
"Until then, you can use this room. They offered me the last two rooms in exchange for looking after the temple." Miroku said.
"Why two rooms? Are you traveling with someone?" Kagome asked.
"No, I just need quiet while I meditate." Miroku explained. "You won't be in the way or anything, if that's what you are wondering."
"As long as we're not intruding." Kagome said.
"I'm going to talk to the villagers about my leave. I'll return soon with some food." Miroku said. He stood up and left the room.
"Miroku-sama is very nice." Kagome smiled.
"So, you like him?" Inuyasha asked.
"Hai."
Inuyasha had a disappointed look on his face. "What's wrong?" Kagome asked.
"It's nothing." Inuyasha said. `She can like whoever she wants. It's not like I care.' He thought.
"No, there's something wrong. Is it because I said I like Miroku-sama? I don't like him like that, if you're wondering." Kagome said.
"It's nothing like that. I said it was nothing." Inuyasha said. Although he was secretly relieved that she didn't like him that way.
They both sat in an awkward silence. Kagome reached into her pocket to take out the bag with the rosary. She took it out to look at it. Inuyasha heard the noise of the beads clinking together and looked up. "What's that?" Inuyasha asked.
"Okaa-san gave it to me before we left. She said I had it in my hand when she found me. That I wouldn't let go of it, even when I was unconscious." Kagome said. "It's the only thing that I know is mine."
"Oh." Inuyasha said. At least she had something. He didn't have anything, not even a memory of his past. She at least had a family, even if it wasn't her real family.
Inuyasha snapped out of his thoughts when he felt a weight drop over him. Kagome had put the rosary around his neck. "Here, you can have it." Kagome said.
"But it's your only possession." Inuyasha said.
"It's okay. I can't repay you for everything you've done. Keep the rosary as a token of my thanks." Kagome said. "I'd feel wrong giving you something that didn't belong to me."
"But then you won't have anything."
"It's alright. I'd rather you have it." Kagome said.
"Thank you." Inuyasha smiled.
"Your welcome." Kagome smiled back.
Neither of them had realized how close they had gotten to each other. They were a breath away since Kagome had to be able to reach up to him to put the rosary on. Inuyasha leaned in closer, almost touching her. They could feel each other's breath. Inuyasha could hear her heartbeat speed up as he got closer.
Suddenly the door opened and Miroku walked in with trays of food. "I hope I'm not interrupting anything." He said.
Inuyasha growled slightly as Kagome blushed. "Here's some food." Miroku set the trays of food in front of them.
"Arigato Miroku-sama." Kagome said.
"No need to be so formal." Miroku repeated Kagome's words.
"Were the villagers okay with you leaving?" Kagome asked.
"Well, they were disappointed to see me go but I explained that it was important. They even gave me some things for my journey." Miroku said.
"This village is very nice." Kagome said.
"They are." Miroku said. He finished his food and grabbed his tray. "It's getting late so I'll be going to sleep now. Just leave your trays outside the door and the inn attendant will take care of it."
"Hai, arigato Miroku." Kagome said as he left.
After both Inuyasha and Kagome finished their food Inuyasha set their trays outside. "It's getting late you should get some rest." Inuyasha said.
"What about you? Are you going to sleep?" Kagome asked.
"I will soon." Inuyasha said.
"Oyasumi." Kagome yawned and fell asleep.
"Good night." He said even though he knew she was asleep.
He couldn't really sleep. He'd been thinking for a while. For some strange reason he was really comfortable around Kagome. Like he'd known her all his life. He couldn't explain the feeling. If Miroku hadn't walked in he would've kissed her. He barely met her a couple days ago!
The attraction was strong between both of them. It wasn't something Inuyasha could fight for long. His youkai blood wasn't going to let him ignore it. He couldn't stop thinking about her. When he heard Miroku ask her to bear his child his blood boiled. He couldn't believe that monk had the nerve to ask her that. The whole day he wondered why he reacted the way he did and why.
Giving up Inuyasha moved to lean against the wall and fell asleep.
The next morning Inuyasha waited for Kagome to wake up. Inuyasha could hear Miroku awake. He was walking around in his room. He went to Kagome's room and knocked on the door. He slid it open and walked in.
"Is Kagome still sleeping?" Miroku asked.
"Yeah." Inuyasha said.
"We should leave when she wakes up. I'll get some breakfast." Miroku said and walked out of the room.
Kagome rolled over onto her back and opened her eyes. Inuyasha and Miroku were both staring at her. She pulled the blanket up to her chin. "What?" She asked in a quiet voice.
"Did you have a bad dream?" Miroku asked.
"No, why?" Kagome asked. She sat up when they both moved away from her face.
"You were tossing and turning. You started mumbling and sweating." Miroku said.
"I don't remember anything." Kagome said.
"Maybe that voice is trying to get out again." Miroku said.
"Voice?" Kagome asked.
"Inuyasha told me that you sometimes blank out and talk as if you weren't yourself." Miroku said.
"Hai, but it's only happened twice so far." Kagome told him.
"Hmm I guess we can't do anything until something more happens." Miroku said.
"Just eat and we can get going." Inuyasha said.
Kagome nodded and started eating.
If it stayed i'd never leave it
If that turned around
I'd grieve the special dirty things that we used to talk about
I mean that loving you is strange
And adored by me throughout oh no it's you again
Someday soon you'll find that someone
Waiting for the chance to beat you
Drooling on the set to feel you
Blessing you with every kiss
