I left the forest, still dwelling on the proposal. I was still upset about my mom.
"Did you catch her?" Shippo came running.
"No," I answered sadly.
"Don't worry," Sango was walking towards me, "I'm sure we'll get to talk to her. In the meantime, we'd better get to the village faster, it's almost midnight and I bet it's way past your bedtime." I nodded slightly. Kilala grew in size by a considerable amount, and Sango lifted me onto her back. She jumped onto Kilala's back infront of me.
I put my arms around her waist as Kilala flew into the sky. "Thank you, Sango."
"You're welcome." She looked back and smiled slightly.
"Sango?" I started tiredly.
"Hmm?"
"Could you be my big sister?"
She looked surprised by my question, but answered with a "sure" anyway. I nodded slightly again and fell asleep.
I woke up in a wooden house, lying on a mat.
"Do not fret, InuYasha, you will know soon enough," said an elderly woman's voice. I staggered towards where the sound was coming from, my legs were still stiff. I pushed the door open. There was a small fire. Miroku, Shippo, Sango, InuYasha, and an elderly woman were sitting by it. The woman had gray hair and caucasian, wrinkly skin. I sat down by the fire quietly, hoping to go unnoticed for reasons unknown to me. Inuyasha's hair had changed color, it was white, his nails were longer, his eyes were now golden instead of dark brown, and he had... dog ears?
"InuYasha, what happened?" I looked at him, confused and he returned the look. It quickly changed to a more confident look than he had without the dog ears, white hair, and golden eyes.
"I'm back to myself, not being mortal, but half-demon," he said with a cocky smile.
"Oh," I answered, unintrested. He frowned.
"Etsuko, correct?" the elderly lady asked.
"Yes."
"I am Kaede. Would ye mind if I asked you a few questions?"
"No."
"Who is your mother?"
"Kagome." I had figured that InuYasha or someone had already told her that, so this question puzzeled me for a few moments.
"How did you get the Shikon Jewel Shard?" InuYasha interrupted before Kaede could finish what she was going to say.
"I found it, along with this sting and cloth." I removed the items from my pocket. "I think they were my mom's."
"Then why did she not come with you? She clearly still had the jewel, so she could come back easily."
"She can't. It's impossible."
"Why?"
"She's dead." This did not seem to surprise Kaede.
"How did she die, or would you prefer not to answer?"
"Umm..." I considered this. What would happen if I told. How would everyone react? Coldly and harshly with hatred? I decided I should, though I figured I would soon regret it. I swallowed hard. "She... she... I..." I didn't know how to begin.
"Do not rush, child."
