“What do you mean you’re not going?” Hirgurashi, Kagome winced as the shrill voices of her friends rose above the din of Wacdnlds. The end of the school year was quickly approaching and, assuming she had passed the last of her finals this afternoon, Higurashi, Kagome would finally be graduating from Senior High School.

Eri was staring at her incredulously. “This camping trip is going to be the last time we’ll be able to see each other before graduation! I can’t believe you aren’t coming, Kagome!”

Kagome sighed into her soda. “It’s not that I don’t want to go... I just... hadn’t thought about it.” Which was true. Between studying for finals and preparing to fight Naraku in the Sengoku Jidai, the last thing on her mind was the Senior class camping excursion. To her friends, the trip was a big deal. It was the first year that their school was allowing a co-ed overnight field trip and the entire school had talked about nothing else all year long. If she’d been anyone else... and this was the problem.

For the last three years, she had been traveling back and forth, 500 years into the past to the Sengoku Jidai. There, she searched the country for shards of the Shikon no Tama - a jewel that, in the wrong hands, could prove disastrous. As the years had passed, she had spent more of her days there than not.

Though it appeared that the search was nearing completion, Kagome was finding it harder and harder to picture her life here, in modern day Tokyo, instead of in the past with her traveling companions. There was Sango, a youkai taijiya who had become like a sister to her, along with her nekomata, Kirara; Miroku, the hentai monk who, despite his inability to keep his hands to himself, was as close to her as a brother; Shippou, the fox youkai11 Youkai - Demon whom she had acted as mother to since she’d met the orphaned kitsune and lastly...

“It’s because of that jealous, two-timing boyfriend of yours, isn’t it?” Yuka pointed at Kagome. “You need to just stand up and tell him that you’re your own woman and that you’re going on this trip whether he likes it or not!”

Kagome giggled, imagining the look on Inuyasha’s face if she told him that. “It’s not really about him.” Kagome defended, knowing full well that with all but three of the Jewel shards in the evil half-demon Naraku’s possession, there was no way Inuyasha would allow her to leave for something so frivolous as a camping trip. Especially when she ‘camped out’ in his time nearly every day.

Ayumi picked up a french fry and held it up for inspection, not meeting Kagome’s eyes. “So... everything is going all right with you two?”

Kagome searched for a response. Her relationship with the hanyou was complicated at best. Working side by side for so long, she’d at least have expected to have a solid idea about how Inuyasha felt for her. He was jealous of anyone who even looked at her for too long. He was possessive, needy, and over-protective. They argued all the time, and through the power of a sacred Nenju around his neck, Kagome often sent the half-youkai crashing to the ground out of frustration, simply by uttering the word of subjugation, ‘osuwari.’

Then again, there were moments between them that were altogether... different. The trouble was that one minute, she’d catch him looking at her and a spiral of heat would shoot through her body, and the next he’d be running off to Kikyou and wouldn’t even look her direction when he returned.

Frowning, Kagome bit into her cheeseburger, buying time before answering. Kikyou. The priestess was Inuyasha’s first love. Tricked by Naraku into believing they had betrayed one another, the miko had sealed Inuyasha to a tree and followed him in death. When Kagome had first fallen through the well into The Warring States Era, she had released the spell that had bound the hanyou for 50 years, only to discover that she was the reincarnation of Kikyou. She even bore the Shikon no Tama, which had been burned with Kikyou’s remains, inside her body.

When the witch Urasue had resurrected the dead priestess, Inuyasha had made a promise to his former love to follow her into Hell. Kagome’s heart had broken, but in the end, she had asked to remain by his side, unable to give up her own feelings for Inuyasha. Despite the assurances of Sango, Miroku, and... well, everybody, that Inuyasha cared for her as well, Kagome still dreaded the day Kikyou came to collect on his promise.

“I guess... things are the same as always.” Kagome finally answered with an exaggerated smile, ignoring the look her friends exchanged.

“Kagome...” Yuka began gently. “You can do a lot better than that baka. I mean, what about Houjou? He asks about you every day! He’s kind, considerate....”

“Extremely patient...” Eri added, thinking of the three years he’d been asking Kagome to go on a date with him without success.

“And he’s here!” Ayumi finished, looking out the window of their booth at the boy who was standing outside waving at them. Smiling widely, Houjou headed for the double doors at the front of the building as Kagome struggled to cover a groan and sunk lower in her seat.

“Hi Houjou! How’re you?” Eri said, moving over on the bench so that he could squeeze in next to Kagome. “Wanna join us?”

“Hey Eri, Yuka, Ayumi.... Hello, Higurashi. Happy Birthday!” Houjou remained standing, blushing brightly as his gazed rested on the object of his affections, “I brought you ...this.” He held out a gift wrapped package to Kagome, shuffling nervously in place, “It’s an herbal belt for your rheumatism and also...” His blush deepened as he pulled something out of his jacket pocket, “Um... it’s a magnetic bracelet. You wear it and, um, the magnetic field is supposed to help relax your muscles. I hope you like it.”
Made of shiny, ebony stones, it was very pretty. Kagome had missed so much school during her travels that her Jii-Chan had taken great pleasure in making up illnesses to excuse the absences. As a result, all of her friends thought she suffered from a variety of diseases at any given time. Houjou had always taken each opportunity to bring her gifts meant to help her get well. Although she appreciated the gesture, Kagome was distinctly uncomfortable. She simply could not find it in herself to return the boy’s feelings.

After Houjou clumsily attempted to fasten it around her wrist, Ayumi kindly took the bracelet from him and did it herself. Kagome smiled, “Thank you Houjou, it’s very kind of you to remember.” As she saw him begin to stammer again and realized he was about to ask her out, Kagome stood up from the table, “Well guys, sorry to rush off, but I’m having dinner with my family tonight and I can’t be late!”

Yuka frowned, “Kagome, the field trip is tomorrow afternoon and it’s just one night. Try to come, okay? You’ve been sick so often that we’ve hardly gotten to see you much and this might be our last chance.”

“You’re not coming, Higurashi? I could pick you up and take you to the school if you need a ride.”

Kagome smiled, “Thanks, Houjou. It’s not that. I’ll try guys but no promises. See ya!” Kagome left to the sound of her friends wishing her a Happy Birthday.

****************

Inuyasha sat on the shrine steps, waiting for Kagome to come home from school. “That bitch better have a damn good reason for being late,” He muttered under his breath. Kagome’s mom had prepared two baskets full of food for them to take back for Kagome’s birthday celebration in his time, plus a third basket that held a cake he had been warned not to touch while he waited for her. Just as he was beginning to wonder how many times he’d get ‘sat’ for taking just a little taste of the chocolate treat, Kagome appeared, coming up the steps to the shrine.

“Oi, Kagome! Where the hell have you been?” Scowling at her, he lifted the three baskets, careful not to shift the treasured dessert too much, and headed towards the mini shrine that housed the well.

“Wait a sec! I can’t leave yet, I have to say bye to Mama, Souta and Jii-Chan. Plus, I want to change and re-pack my bag. I’ll need at least another half hour.” Grinning as he flopped back down on the steps, Kagome reached out and tweaked one of the hanyou’s ears. “And don’t even think about touching that cake!”

“Then you better hurry bitch, ‘cause if I can’t eat it here, I might just leave without you!” Jerking his head out from under her hand and sighing loudly to emphasize his displeasure, Inuyasha jumped back up and started pacing the shrine steps.

“Hello, Mama. Thanks again for all the food. Everyone will be so happy to have such a wonderful meal!” Kagome hugged her mother and messed up her brother’s hair on her way through the kitchen.

“Of course, Kagome. It’s not everyday a girl turns 18.” The family had already celebrated her birthday the night before, knowing that Inuyasha would be eager to return to his world as soon as she got home from taking her finals. “How did it go?” Her mother called up the stairs.

Kagome struggled into a pair of jeans as she called back downstairs, “You know, I actually think it went okay! Inuyasha’s been helping me study the math every night and that’s really helped keep him occupied so he doesn’t distract me.”

“Oi! I heard that, bitch!”

Kagome laughed, pulling on a pink tank top and drawing her hair up into a pony tail. Heaving her backpack onto her bed, she quickly emptied it of all school related materials. “I guess I won’t need this stuff anymore.” Smiling at the thought that she might actually graduate, despite all odds, Kagome began to hum as she started re-filling her pack with things she’d need in the Sengoku Jidai.

With a noticeably lighter load, minus the school books, Kagome headed back downstairs to Jii-Chan’s room and kissed him good-bye.

“Behave yourself, young lady!” he admonished as she gave him a quick hug.

“Well, I guess I’m ready to... Inuyasha! Osuwari!” With a muttered curse the hanyou slammed face first into the cement steps, a finger full of chocolate frosting held carefully aloft. Calling a last good-bye over her shoulder, Kagome picked up the basket holding the chocolate cake and headed towards the well.

“Dammit... Kagome! Wait the fuck up!”

Kagome turned and glared as Inuyasha approached her. “This cake better be in one piece or you’ll get a lot worse than...” Her words caught in her throat as Inuyasha pulled her into a quick hug.

“ I forgot. Happy Birthday, Kagome.” Inuyasha grinned down at her and, grabbing the cake basket, took off towards the well.

Kagome sighed, “Inuyasha no baka... you better wait!” Laughing at the teasing look he gave her, she took off after him, leaping into the well just seconds after him.
