Inuyasha was tired. He’d spent half the night sitting up to keep a worried eye on Kagome, and the other part sleeping as lightly as possible, in case of trouble. Now, running towards the distant mountain range with Kagome on his back, Inuyasha struggled to make good time in their travels.
High above the hanyou, on Kirara’s back, Miroku felt more rested then any man deserved to be. Having meditated with Kagome for three hours during the night, the monk was bursting with energy, and felt anxious to reach the village and kick some youkai ass. With any luck, the situation in the village would give them a clue as to Naraku’s whereabouts. In front of him, Sango was quieter than usual. Every so often she shot a glance down at Kagome.
Miroku patted her waist. “Don’t worry, Sango. Kagome is strong. She’ll manage until our task is complete.”
Sango frowned at the boldness of Miroku’s hand, but didn’t comment on it, “I know. Although I still think Inuyasha should have taken her back to Kaede, first thing this morning.” With a vicious glare, she added, “If any harm comes to her because of that damn hanyou’s stubbornness, I’ll sit him into the next new moon, myself!”
Miroku grinned, loving the fire that lit her eyes. Mentally, he reminded himself, again, never to do anything to really incite the taijiya’s temper. “I think we’re approaching another village.”
All morning, the gang had traveled North, stopping in each village they passed, to inquire about rumors of bird-youkai. Everyone was sure they had to be getting closer to their destination, but as of yet, no one seemed to have heard about any disturbances from a neighboring village. Passing through a field, they ignored the startled glances from the farmers and headed directly for the largest house they could find.
Either Miroku or Sango always did the talking. They’d found that a Monk or a demon exterminator were more likely to have their questions answered than a frequently grumpy half-youkai, or a scantily dressed girl. Leaving Inuyasha, Kagome, Shippou, and Kirara in the garden, Miroku and Sango approached the house.
Stepping forward, Sango knocked on the door. After a moments pause, a middle-aged man answered. He eyed Sango with suspicion, taking in her clothing and weapon. He seemed uncertain about speaking with her, until Miroku stepped forward, allowing the Village Head to see his priests robes. Bowing, the leader welcomed his guests and stepped out onto the porch to speak with them.
Falling back to provide a respectable distance for Miroku and the Village Head to speak, Sango assumed the traditional pose of a woman traveling with her husband.
Sango was not offended by the man’s obviously distasteful assessment of her. The demon exterminators were not a well known group. Especially these days, years after her village had been decimated by a band of demons sent by Naraku. The evil hanyou had lured their strongest fighters away, enslaved her younger brother, and forced him to kill their father and comrades. The safety of her people had rested on the secrecy of their village’s location, so Sango did not often expect her armor to be recognized by those in the smaller, more distant villages. In places like these, for a woman to be dressed as she was, was unheard of.
Miroku bowed to the Village Head and led Sango back to the others. When he was sure the man was no longer watching them, he turned to Sango with a grin, “What an honorable wife you’ll make.” Laughing at her irritated expression and bracing himself for the punch she aimed at his shoulder, Miroku put his arm around the woman, speaking seriously, “Sango, in all things, you are my equal. You will never spend a day in my shadow,” Smiling at the pretty blush that rose to her face, he let his arm drop to caress her behind.
Sango’s slap announced their return to the others of their party. Shaking her head, she approached a grinning Kagome and a scowling Inuyasha and Shippou.
“So.... What’d he say?” Inuyasha grunted.
Inuyasha seemed more impatient that usual, and Miroku nodded in supplication of his mood, casting a glance at Kagome, “ He informed me that a village about fifteen miles from here may be the one we are looking for. He’d journeyed there a fortnight ago, and seems to remember the Village Head mentioning such a disturbance.”
*****************
Kagome hopped down off of Inuyasha’s back and caught Shippou as he leapt into her arms. The kitsune hadn’t been away from her side since morning, and she kept catching the looks of concern he sent her way. Smiling and rubbing his head, Kagome carried Shippou as they followed the others into the house of the Village Head, Hideyoshi-sama(1).
After they all had removed their shoes and sandals, a servant led the group into a room and gestured for them to sit around the table. As they did, more servants appeared, bearing covered dishes that were placed before the travelers. As quickly as they appeared, the servants vanished once more. Alone, the friends looked at each other in confusion.
With a shrug, Inuyasha quickly helped himself to the food placed before him, although he made sure to take a careful sniff before touching anything. Eating in silence, Inuyasha looked around the room. Simply but elegantly furnished, the poverty that threatened the country appeared not to have touched here. Though this was common among the wealthier leaders, Inuyasha made sure to eat twice his fill, since their host could so obviously afford the loss.
Glancing towards the door, Inuyasha noticed a slight gap between the frames, behind which, the figure of a man was just barely visible. Jumping to his feet, Inuyasha drew Tetsusaiga and rushed the door, “What are you doing, spying on us like that? Show yourself!” Behind him, the others rose to their feet as the doors slide open.
A richly dressed man, who could be no one other than their host, appeared with an apologetic bow, “Forgive me, honored friends. I only wished to view my visitors before making my presence known. Please, put away your weapons and join me in a drink.” Stepping around Inuyasha’s blade, Hideyoshi-sama took his place at the head of the table and prepared to pour sake for everyone.
Inuyasha hesitated a moment, before meeting Kagome’s eyes. Seeing the admonition in them for him to behave, Inuyasha scowled, but sheathed his fang and resumed his seat next to the girl. Folding his arms into the sleeves of his haori, Inuyasha eyed the Village Head warily. He’d never been comfortable in the presence of affluence. Having been born to privilege on both his mother’s side and his father’s, and having then been scorned by both as well, the hanyou had developed a great mistrust of all those who made a show of their wealth and position.
Offering the alcohol to his guests, Hideyoushi-sama cleared his throat to address them. “I have been told that you are a traveling group of demon exterminators. That is most fortunate. I would like to extend to you, in advance, my gratitude for your assistance with our situation. If you would so honor me, I would be pleased to provide you all with food and shelter, for as many nights as it requires you to help us with this menace.”
Miroku made a small bow, “Indeed, that would be most kind. Perhaps you could explain to us the circumstances of your troubles.”
Hideyoushi-sama nodded, “Of course.” Settling himself into a more comfortable position, the Village Head closed his eyes for a moment, searching for where to begin, “ We are a humble farming village. Our good fortune has come to us from the excellence of the vegetables we produce. No other village in the Province can match us in quantity, or quality. When first the bird-youkai came to us, they asked only for a small offering of our produce, to feed their young. However, for the last month, villagers have fallen prey to the bird-youkai. Our community is no longer safe to leave their homes after dark.”
A sudden scream from outside prevented the Village Head from saying more. Rushing from the table, Inuyasha and the others emerged just as the shadow of an enormous creature darkened the ground.
“Hey, Hideyoushi, didn’t you say that these bastards only attack at night?” Inuyasha drew Tetsusaiga and took his stance, staring up at the sky.
The Village Head stared in shock as one of the large youkai flew overhead, “Before now, they have not attacked during the day!”
“Kirara!” Sango pulled Hiraikotsu from her back and mounted the nekomata. Taking to the skies in pursuit of the creature, she hunched over Kirara’s head, murmuring words of encouragement and instructions.
Inuyasha turned and leapt onto the roof of the Village Head’s house to get a better view, while Miroku moved out into the open, looking for the direction of the next attack.
Kagome had rushed to the side of a fallen woman, who lay crying on the ground.
“My husband,” the woman groaned, “ it took my husband!” Laying a comforting hand on the grieving woman’s shoulder, Kagome removed an arrow from the quiver at her back. Ordering Shippou to stay with the woman and lead her to safety, Kagome rushed forward to warn the other villagers off of the road.
As a warning cry came from Inuyasha, Kagome spotted an infant in its sling, lying on the road. ‘His mother must have been taken,’ she realized as no one came forth to claim him. As the shadow of Kirara and Sango appeared before her, Kagome ran to scoop up the abandoned child.
“Hiraikotsu!” Sango’s boomerang bone struck the bird, just as it spotted Kagome, reducing the youkai to pieces. As she caught her weapon on the return, she spied Inuyasha battling with a second creature, and Miroku handling a third.
“Kaza no Kizu!”
“Kazaana!”
A loud shriek announced the arrival of a fourth bird, and Sango urged Kirara forward to meet it. With her usual cry, Sango flung her weapon at the adversary, moments before she realized her error.
Behind her, another shriek was heard. Turning in her seat, Sango saw Kagome unprotected on the ground below, as a fifth bird began a long dive, directly towards the girl. Catching her weapon, Sango cried out in alarm. “Kagome!”
Kagome had slung the baby onto her body and was holding her bow, preparing to shoot. Taking careful aim with her arrow, she released the bow string with a loud cry.
“Tatsujou!”
The Hamaya’s(2) pink glow grew into a glaring light, making Sango shield her eyes as the dart struck it’s target. The remains of the youkai fell gently to the ground, nothing but dust.
Landing softly beside her friend, Sango rushed to Kagome,“Are you all right?”
Kagome nodded, staring at her bow, “Did you... know it would do that?”
Sango frowned and shook her head, “It wasn’t the weapon, Kagome.... It was you.”
Inuyasha watched as Kagome took the infant to its father, who had coming running in from the fields after the attack. Certain that she was safe, Inuyasha approached the Village Head, “ Where do these bastards hide their nest?”
*****************
The mountains cast a shadow over the lands to the east as the sun began it’s decent into the sea. Kagome held on tightly to Inuyasha’s back as they hurried up the rocky incline to the dark caves above. Kagome sensed Inuyasha’s frustration, and realized that it was for her sake. She, too, didn’t want to spend a minute more than necessary so far from home and silently strengthened her resolve for the coming battle, as he climbed far ahead of the others, racing haphazardly towards his goal.
The night of meditation had done her service. Physically, she felt sound and, were it not for the growing circles under her eyes, no one would think, to look at her, that she suffered internally. Last night’s dream had been the worst. Vague images from it teased her mind, leaving her with no peace during her waking hours either.
The business with her arrow had shaken her as well. Never before had Kagome been able to harness so much power into a shot. She remembered how she had felt as she drew back the bow string, the weight of that infant reminding her just what was at stake, should she fail to hit her mark. ‘Could just a few hours of meditation... have produced such an increase in power?’ The thought somehow scared her. Kagome had imagined being able to accomplish what she had done, only after months, or even years of training, not in a few short hours. She didn’t know how she should feel at the idea that, as a properly trained Miko, she would be able to harness more energy than she ever could have imagined existed a few years ago. Suddenly, Kagome felt the overwhelming burden of knowledge, telling her that she no longer knew who she was.
Inuyasha felt Kagome shiver against his back. He picked up speed a little, causing a yelp of alarm from the cowering kitsune hidden beneath his hair. The sooner this was over, the better. The whole village made him nervous, and something about the Village Head bothered him as well. Although Kagome had smiled, and behaved as normal today, he could smell the dry scent of fear that clung to her body like sweat, and this worried Inuyasha more than all of the other things combined.
Kagome was never afraid. This was the girl who had faced Naraku countless times, with no thought for her own safety. She had stood between him and his half-brother, Sesshoumaru, daring the youkai to cross her, or begging for Inuyasha’s life. She was the only one who could approach him without fear when his own youkai blood got the better of him, and it was her alone that had been able to stop his transformations, time and again. To sense fear from her scared him. More than he wanted to admit. He knew she would never let on that she was afraid, so he did the only thing he could do. He protected her until he could find someone who could help her figure out what was wrong better then he was able to.
Reaching the shelf upon which rested the entrance to the bird-youkai’s nest, Inuyasha crouched, testing the air for any unseen presences. Behind him, Sango, Miroku and Kirara joined them. Kagome slipped from his back, allowing him the freedom of movement she knew he required, taking Shippou with her. Placing Shippou on the ground, Kagome drew her bow and notched an arrow in place, prepared. Inuyasha grinned his approval. There was no doubt about it, Kagome was quite a girl.
Entering the cave, Inuyasha grew tired of waiting around, “Hey! Bird-brain! Get out here and face me!” As his voice reverberated off the cave walls, a low rumble rose from somewhere further in. As the rumble grew steadily, Inuyasha became aware of a presence before him, though still far away.
From out of the darkness, a voice called to them, “Who dares enter the nest of the great Izanami(3)?”
Inuyasha tightened his grip on the hilt of his fang, “Someone who’s got a problem with youkai who think it’s okay to graze in villages. Come out and fight!”
A short silence was followed with a low chuckle, “A hanyou? How intriguing. Enter, young hanyou, and bring your human companions with you.”
With a quick glance at Kagome to make sure she understood to stay behind him, Inuyasha proceeded further into the cave, Sango and Miroku by his side. The cavernous entry narrowed briefly, before opening up into a formal hallway, lit by iron sconces bearing oil. At the end of the hallway, the walls suddenly fell back to form an enormous room. Openings of other tunnels marred the otherwise perfect wall of solid rock that rose hundreds of feet above their heads. The warm glow of the oil lamps filled the room, creating an inviting feel, despite the sentries posted at various points around the wall.
At the furthest end of the room from where the group stood, a large stone chair had been carved. Handsome men with large bird-like wings and hooked noses stood, still as statues, on either side of what was obviously some sort of throne. Seated delicately in the center of the throne itself was a breathtakingly beautiful woman. Large white wings grew from her back, and the iridescent glow of her eyes betrayed her youkai blood.
Miroku dropped his head to his chest and whispered a furtive prayer to Kami, as Sango elbowed him in the ribs, partly reminding him to remain alert, partly out of irritation.
“Welcome, Hanyou, welcome. Come closer friends. I wish to see you more clearly. Ah, a youkai and nekomata as well? What an unusual bunch of travelers has appeared on my doorstep. What is it you wish to speak with me about? I doubt you’ve simply lost your way,” Her voice was smooth, like honey. A dangerous glint in her eye belied her friendly tone, as the group edged closer together.
Inuyasha gritted his teeth in frustration at the woman-youkai’s calm demeanor, “Like I said, we got a score to settle with you. Seems you’ve taken to eating innocent villagers.”
Izanami smiled, “Innocent villagers? I know of no such creature. All I have done was allowed my kin their share in our agreement. After all, it is they who have done the, shall we say... ‘work’, for our end of the deal.”
“Deal? What the fuck are you talking about?” Inuyasha growled at her.
“Do you mean the deal to spare the villagers in exchange for vegetables?” Miroku began to feel that there was more to this story then they had been told.
“Vegetables? I think not. The deal was for prosperity... in exchange for a first born son.”
“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” Inuyasha said, baring his fangs. “but I’m getting real tired of listening to you talk!”
“Wait! Do you mean to say that you made a deal to help the village prosper, and in exchange, you would receive someone’s child? For what reason?” Sango was beginning to understand.
“Reason? The blood of a human infant provides my people with great power,” Grinning, the leader of the bird-youkai continued, “My own son’s power would be greatly enhance by the blood of one who has benefited from our goodness.”
Kagome was appalled, “You were going to drink a baby’s blood? That’s awful! Who would make such a horrible agreement!”
“I’ll bet it was the village head! He seems to be doing rather well, despite the wars,” Inuyasha knew there was something wrong with that guy.
Izanami laughed loudly, “Hideyoushi? That preening fool? Do not be absurd. This man was a simple farmer. One who has greatly benefitted from our deal, yet refuses to comply with his end of the bargain.”
“How has he prospered? What is it that you gave him in exchange for his child?” Miroku called to her.
“Before we came to this valley, drought and famine had ruined the land. My people needed a place to call home, and the caves among these mountains were exactly what we required. Shortly after we arrived, a young man lost his way and stumbled into my nest. I invited him in, as I did you, and asked him what it was he sought that brought him so far from home. He told me that he had climbed to the top of the mountain to make an offering for rain to his gods. He was so hungry and fatigued that he could no longer continue his climb down the mountain.
“ I thought him handsome, and I ordered him to be nursed back to health. When he was well enough, I again called him before me. I asked the man what it was that he desired? Like all mortals, the man told me he desired to prosper. I promised him that his village could grow rich with the aid of my people, if he would agree to a trade. My people would descend into the fields and fertilize the hard soil with their droppings. Any seed planted thereafter would grow into the most perfect specimens of its kind. In exchange, the farmer agreed to give me the first son he sired, so that my own child could benefit from my sacrifice.”
Inuyasha was floored, “Shit? This whole thing was about shit?”
“He went back on his word. Now he and his village shall suffer. As for the man himself, his suffering has already begun,” With a satisfied smile, the youkai placed a hand on her stomach. “Though she managed to drop the baby first, I invited his female over to dine this afternoon.”
‘The baby.’ Kagome thought wildly. ‘That man!’ Angrily stepping around Inuyasha, Kagome raised her bow. “That’s it!” She shouted indignantly, “What a horrible woman! I won’t forgive you for this!” As she drew back her bow string to fire, a sudden rush of wind blinded the group.
‘Dammit, Kagome!’ Inuyasha though wildly as before them raised the enormous figure of the transformed woman.
With a ear-splitting cry, the bird-youkai leader sent Kagome flying to the side wall where she was instantly grabbed by two of the sentries. Inuyasha swore loudly, going to Kagome’s rescue. Sango’s voice called out a warning to him. With seconds to spare, Inuyasha swung around, slashing the air with his claws.
“ Sankon-Tetsusou!” His claws pierced Izanami’s left eye. Blood and ichor oozed from the wound as the bird raised back with an angry cry. Turning, Inuyasha slammed his fist into the face of one of the sentries holding Kagome, turning seconds later to dispatch the second guard with a downward slash of his blade.
Kagome was conscious. Inuyasha breathed a sigh of relief as she looked up at him apologetically, “Get Shippou and head for the exit,” he told her, watching for a moment to make sure she obeyed.
Sango, Miroku, and Kirara had already dealt with all of the other sentries and were facing the now one-eyed leader of the bird-youkai.
As Inuyasha joined them, Miroku figured that the only way to dispatch all of them would be to either destroy the mountain, crushing the entire bird-youkai tribe, or make sure that all were within reach of his Kazaana. Not liking either option, he called out to Inuyasha, “Got any ideas?”
Inuyasha growled, “Just one!” Izanami swelled with energy, preparing to send them all into the seven hells, “Go protect Kagome!” Inuyasha shouted to them, as a swirl of energy gathered around Tetsusaiga.
“Fucking youkai!” Inuyasha roared as soon as they had disappeared, “Now you’re going to taste real power!” With a final scream, Inuyasha forced his fang down, sending a blast of energy straight at the creature.
“Bakuryuuha!(4)” The energy from his sword engulfed that of his opponents, sending the force backwards and destroying the youkai. Running from the cavern, Inuyasha could sense still more of them ascending through the mountain.
Grabbing Kagome and flinging her onto his back, he shouted for the others to follow as he quickly descended the mountain. Making sure Sango, Miroku, and Shippou were on Kirara, Inuyasha leapt into the air, flying towards the ground, holding tightly to Kagome’s legs. Landing at the base of the mountain, Inuyasha let Kagome down and turned to look back up at the cave.
Nearly a hundred bird youkai were circling above, crying angrily in their eagerness to avenge the death of their leader.
Calling a warning for Kirara to move, Inuyasha prepared his sword as the entire fleet of youkai headed his direction.
“Kaza no Kizu!” The Cutting Wind shot forward, instantly wiping out the herd of bird-youkai.
“Wow.” Shippou stared in awe as every single one disappeared from the sky. With newfound respect, Shippou turned to the hanyou, “That was amazing, Inuyasha!”
“Keh.” Inuyasha approached Kagome, lifting her chin to see into her eyes. “You okay?”
“ I’m sorry, Inuyasha. I was just so... angry!” Kagome looked in his eyes for signs of fury.
Instead, Inuyasha smiled, “Let’s get out of here.”
****************
Night had fallen once more as the gang finally stopped for the night. The Village Head had been grateful to them all for destroying the bird-youkai, but horrified to learn the cause of both his village’s success and its horrors. The man in question would be dealt with according to the laws of their village, and Inuyasha had suggested they begin the journey back to Musashi, since it was obvious to all of them that Naraku was not involved.
There was still a ways to go before reaching home, and though Inuyasha was loath to stop, he had grudgingly acquiesced to the needs of his human traveling companions. His worry for Kagome had increased as night drew nearer. While Kagome and Sango were preparing dinner, Inuyasha had approached Miroku about meditating throughout the night, in order to avoid more nightmares.
“Kagome must try to achieve natural sleep. The power we saw embodied in her arrow today was uncontrolled. Should she continue to meditate for long hours, she would be able to harness more of her spiritual energy, but she will not have had the time to gain the power to control it,” Miroku shook his head to emphasize the point he was making, “Such a thing would lead to her destruction.”
Later, as sleep fell over the group, Inuyasha sat awake, eyes on Kagome. She seemed to be sleeping peacefully, breath even, a smile teasing the corner of her lips. Shippou lay pressed up against her, snoring softly. Maybe he’d been worried about nothing, after all. Closing his eyes, ears still alert for the slightest noise, Inuyasha slept lightly.
******************
“You will kill him.”
Kagome watched wide-eyed, as Inuyasha transformed before her, “No!” She screamed, reaching out to him.
“You will kill him... or he will kill you.”
Tears of despair slid down Kagome’s cheeks as a full-youkai Inuyasha approached her. Grabbing her by the arms, he pulled her to him, pressing his fangs into her neck.
“Stop, Inuyasha!” She screamed, pressing against his chest to push him away, “Don’t!”
A bright flash of pink energy surrounded them, causing Inuyasha to fall back. A wail of sorrow filled Kagome’s throat as she crawled to him from where she’d fallen.
“Inuyasha,” she begged, “please come back!”
“Kagome?” A now human Inuyasha looked up at her, eyes filled with pain, “Why?”
Kagome placed her hand to his chest, pulling away again as she felt a wetness on her hand. Blood. Inuyasha’s blood. The burned impression of her hands on his chest seeped blood, slowing draining life from the weak human form.
“Noooo!” As Inuyasha’s life escaped him, Kagome flung herself against his chest, begging him to return.
“Come, Inuyasha,” A new voice called from behind her.
Wiping the tears from her eyes, leaving streaks of blood in their place, Kagome turned to see Kikyou. Her arm outstretched, she reached towards him. Kagome looked around to see Inuyasha’s spirit walk forward to answer the call. Kagome struggled to stop him, frozen in place, unable to even cry out to him. Her eyes refused to close, her head would not turn away as, once more, Inuyasha took hold of Kikyou, preparing to follow her into Hell.
*****************
Frowning, Inuyasha opened his eyes and looked up. He had sensed their presence only moments ago, and now he watched the Shinidamachuu(5), Kikyou’s soul catchers, pass through the night.
‘Kikyou....’ Jumping out of the tree, Inuyasha knelt in front of Kagome. She still appeared to be sleeping peacefully. Inuyasha was torn between staying at Kagome’s side and going to find Kikyou. If she was nearby, she might know something to help them find Naraku. Making his decision, Inuyasha cast one more look at Kagome, as he took off through the trees. If he made it quick, he would be back beside Kagome before she could miss him.
Running through the trees, following the glow of the Shinidamachuu, Inuyasha thought about his first love. She’d given her life so that he would not die alone. After Kagome had broken Kikyou’s spell binding him to the Goshinboku, Kikyou had been resurrected in a body made of her bones and burial soil, animated by a portion of her soul, stolen from its reincarnation in Kagome. Now Kikyou wandered, neither dead nor living, seeking revenge for her death.
Emerging from the thickness of the forest into a small grove, Kikyou stood, waiting. The Shinidamachuu flew towards her, sending glowing balls of white light towards the dead Miko. These were the souls of dead women who kept Kikyou’s body alive.
“Kikyou,” Inuyasha said, approaching the woman.
“Inuyasha,” Kikyou stepped towards him, no expression marring the perfection of her face.
Once, he had loved this woman. At one time, he’d contemplated becoming human so he could live with her, be with her. Though he had sworn to protect her, he wasn’t sure what it was she wanted from him. When she’d first been resurrected, her desire to see him dead was what kept her going. His love for her was gone, but he was still bound to her by his failure to protect her in life.
“I wish to speak with the girl... Kagome,” A hint of challenge rose in Kikyou’s voice, though her face gave no clue as to her intentions.
Inuyasha stiffened, “Why?”
Kikyou’s eyes met his. A sad smile broke the stillness of her face, “Don’t worry, Inuyasha. I will do her no harm. I give you my word,” Kikyou turned away and moved further into the clearing, reaching out a hand to one of her snake-like minions, “I have sensed a growing power in her. I wish to speak to her regarding the coming battle. I have need of her... assistance.”
Inuyasha nodded, “It’d be easier if I...”
Kikyou shook her head interrupting him, “It is important that I speak to her. Tonight...alone. I care for it no more than she does. However, she will be safe with me. You can return in ten minutes from the moment you leave her with me. That is all I require from her.”
Inuyasha sighed, “I’ll bring her. It may take a few minutes to convince her though.”
Kikyou smiled wryly, “I will not move from this spot until you have returned with the girl.”
“Kikyou....” Inuyasha began, “do you....” His question was cut off as a loud scream echoed through the forest.
“Inuyasha!!!”

C hapter Glossary:
1. Hideyoshi-sama - I sometimes say that I don’t write this story... it writes itself. A good example of this was my choice of the name Hideyoshi for the village head. After writing this chapter, I was doing some research and this name popped up on a website. It turns out that there was an actual feudal lord and samurai named Toyotomi, Hideyoshi, who was responsible for helping to unify Japan in the 16th century. After serving under Oda, Nobunaga (one of the warlords responsible for the Feudal era) Hideyoshi had himself appointed regent, chancellor and retired regent (which is the title he’s still known by today).
Is it possible he channeled his way into my story? Okay... probably not, but it’s interesting nonetheless.
2. Hamaya - Purity arrows. Kagome and Kikyou’s weapon.
3. Izanami - Name means “She who invites you to enter.”
4. Bakuryuuha - Explosive Wave Technique / The Backlash Wave (Tetsusaiga’s 2nd attack)
5. Shinidamachuu - Soul Collectors. The snake looking things that gather souls for Kikyou.
A/N: Almost all of the characters in this story are brought to you through the genius of Rumiko Takahashi, and the letters H, I and P. I do not own the characters, they own me.
