CHAPTER 1
Kissing the horizon, the sun slowly set, bringing the busy mega polis of Tokyo to a slow trod. Dimly lit streets transported the rush-hour traffickers to their homes.  The cities once empty streets, now filled with husbands trying to make it home to wives and teens exiting malls after a quick study and gossip date.
“Inuyahsa, wait up!” Kagome called as she ran up to him.
“What Kagome?!”  Sighing he turned towards the girl now jogging up to him. “I said I’ll be there. What more do you want to hear wench?” He said aggravated, “I have to go…pulling his phone out of his pocket and staring at the time…now.”
“That’s it? Not even a good bye? I honestly thought even after 12 years of knowing each other you would be a little less horrible. Seriously Yasha I can’t stand you sometimes!” Kagome retorted angrily, glaring at him scoldingly.
By this time several people walking by stared at them in curiosity. Some even being as bold to refer to the two as “young love” and “what a cute couple”, that caused a faint blush to stain both faces. Others hurrying home, ignored the couple as they shoved through the thickening human passage of rush hour.
“Are you finished yapping?” annoyed by Kagome’s sudden need to argue about a simple thing as saying bye. It left him wondering if she would ever give up on trying teaching him how to be socially competent. He glared back at her hotly. “Because I have to be somewhere”, he stated matter of factly.
Sighing hopelessly and somewhat surprised at his sudden change in attitude towards her, she gave up on the playful scolding they were used to.
“Yah I’m finished you can leave me like you always do. I…I think...  never mind.” Sighing again, her mood had suddenly dampened and she didn’t feel like standing there in front of him anymore. His tone had clearly made it obvious that he had no more time for her and their friendship at the moment; he had more pressing matters as he always did of late. “Come to think of it, when was the last time we hung out together and watched a movie or just wasted time…like we normally do.”So she just simply gave up on trying to communicate her feelings and decipher why he was in such a hurry…away from her.
“You think what?” he questioned. He knew he shouldn’t be wasting time trying to figure out her problems, if he did he would have his own to correct. He had to hurry or else she might get pissed and he wasn’t in for her shit right now…just a nice dinner date that’s all and to establish where we are in our relationship.” But he couldn’t just leave, Kagome was his best-friend since she was in diapers and he was falling out of trees… “or was it when she called me dog-boy…hmmm?”  The thought served to calm his agitated state a bit as he remembered exactly how he had met Kagome.
“Nothing... Forget it”, she stated.
“You know what your problem is…you think too much.”He replied his usually relaxed self returning and his handsome features graced with a small smile. For her…just intended for her and for a minute Kagome, saw her best-friend in front of her and not the pissy, edgy, ass-whole he had been to her for the past few weeks. She saw her Yasha shine through the dark cloak he had used to guise himself and their friendship. “My Yasha” she thought. “The one who always made me laugh, always there when I decide to have a go at gravity, held me when I cried …he always hated when women cried. For the past few weeks you haven’t been my Inuyasha…. hardly showing up when I ask, never present when I need you and always disappearing in thin air because something has suddenly come up…you’ve become less caring...colder. Who are you and what have you done with my Inuyasha? I want him back!”  Tears almost made its way to her eyes and a sad smile had flitted across her features for a split second. But as soon as it came it was gone and replaced with an impassive look. She would be strong dammnit! She would not have a break down in the middle of Tokyo and waste more of his precious time.
“Yah, maybe I do”, softly spoken towards her counterpart. “Don’t you have somewhere to be?” she spat snidely. Her temper flaring at him as she remembered his previously brash behaviour towards her, a glare replacing the indifference on her features.
“What the fuck!? She’s angry? A minute a go she was happy go lucky…then for a split second I swear she was gonna cry…and now she’s angry!? Dammnit, I have no time for her mood swings. I care...but I also have to hurry dammnit!”  He glanced down at his Citizen Eco-Drive Aqua land watch and his eyes nearly bugged out its sockets. “6:00! Ah shit…I’m gonna be late!”
Kagome raised a delicately arched eyebrow at him and tried her luck as his best-friend to see if he would tell her where he was going. “…one more try couldn’t hurt” “Hmmm…so you mind telling me where you’re going?” She looked into his amber orbs hoping she could at least get something out of him.
He looked down onto the cracked cement of the sidewalk, scuffling his feet for a bit, as if thinking and then not looking in her eyes, every where else but her eyes, he responded, “Am…am…I… am… “Shit what do I tell her this time!?” I’m going over to Miroku’s to finish our group assignment …then do guy stuff…yah, that’s it.” He stated, relief for something, Kagome not sure what, in his tone.
Both of Kagome’s eyebrows rose in fascination of his answer and she looked at the usually self-assured hanyou in front of her, with a questioning look on her countenance. “Did he just make that up? Surely sounded like he pulled that out of Merlin’s hat. Hmmm…That’s strange I could have sworn Sango said she and Miro had plans tonight… she sighed, and didn’t you guys say that project was pushed back. Why do you lie to me Yasha? You know I’m not stupid…Why can’t you just tell me? Are you serious about our friendship anymore? Do you even care? She stared at him intently for a while, and then gave in with another sigh and with sad eyes, hinting the slightest of tears, she had wanted to shed earlier, she gave a brief nod. Straightening her form and trying her best to not let her tears spill over and show her wounded pride, caused by her friend’s disloyalty, she put on a slight smile that quivered now and then.
“Ahhh don’t give me that look Kags...Come on smile and I can’t do this right now. Kikyou is gonna have my head. Shit…shit shit! He really wanted to spend more time with her, but he couldn’t do that now, he had to hurry because of his date with Kikyou, who his friend didn’t even know he was dating. For some reason he just couldn’t tell her of the girl and just settled for making sure their other friends didn’t spill the beans until he was ready to tell Kagome. Who he hoped would understand.
Sighing, he slowly backed away from her, putting some distance between them, he couldn’t stand the scent of her tears nor could he stand the expression on her face. It made him feel guilty…almost like he was betraying her. “But I am aren’t I? I haven’t been good to her for awhile. I can’t even tell her I’m dating someone. I don’t know what I’m afraid of, I know she would understand, she would be happy for me…she’s always happy for everyone.” At that he frowned, and before his thoughts could consume him once more, he made a quick exit “Ok I’m gonna leave now…am bye Kago.” and left her, standing on the side walk, looking devastatingly beautiful.
“Yah b-ye Yahsa…” she whispered, her voice raw with emotions and unshed tears.
But he was off before the last words left her mouth. She stared at his retreating figure and watched the furry appendages at the top his head swivel towards her then back in place. She watched him until he disappeared into the Wacdonalds parking lot, then saw him drive out a few minutes later in his red Pagani Zonda R, speeding down the street into the opposite direction of her, farther into the commercial district.
She stood there for a good five minutes longer and just gazed into the distance. At what… she didn’t know, but her thoughts were all jumbled in her head, one of them very prominent. “Did he just lie to me and leave? Where is our friendship going Yasha…don’t you want it anymore?”  She whimpered at that thought.
If only he had stayed longer, and not sped of into the nightfall, he probably could have saved ‘it’ from then, stopped the gloom to the soul that was about to come and he would have without doubt smelt the tears that now streaked her normally bright and breezy visage. In its place, now, a misery stained expression.

Inuyasha why does it hurt so much? Is it the betrayal? The fact that you don’t seem to be there anymore when I need you? Or is it …no it can’t be …not now…Kami Inu…I can’t like him…He’s my best friend…but still, could I?
Kagome shrugged her back pack properly onto her shoulders and walked towards the Sunset Shrine, her home since birth. She walked amidst the crowd of hasty people, without paying much attention to where she was going; too deep in thought.
What is happening Yasha? Why won’t you tell me? It hurts a lot to be your friend…best friend- or so you say and you can’t even look me in the eyes and tell me the truth.
She trudged up the large stairs to her home, heaving here large yellow backpack along with her.
You lie to me in front of our friends and they look at me in pity as if they know everything. Why am I the only one who doesn’t know? I ask them and they give me half ass answers or they just try avoiding and switch the topic…you do the same. And I’m afraid to speak my mind because I’m afraid you’ll hate me for prying too much.
Now, if she were looking and paying attention, she would have heard the distinct shout of Souta louder and clearer,
“Watch out nee-chan!” yelled Kagome’s 13 y/o kid brother.
“Huh…what? Eeep!”…OMG! Kagome shifted just in time to see a blur of black and white fly pass her, missing her face by an inch and down the stairs.
“I’m so sorry nee-chan, are you ok?” he questioned.
“Am,” still in a daze, “yah, I’m fine.”
“Ok. Hey, where’s nii-san?” I hardly see him anymore. Are you guys fighting? That couldn’t be it. Even when you guys fight and you’re not talking to him, he’s still here…”
Cutting of his ramblings, “He’s busy this evening.”
“Oh!”
Ruffling Souta’s hair, she walked off aimlessly towards the main shrine house.
Something’s not right; nee-chan seems, out of it. I wonder what’s happened.”  He looked on to his sister’s retreating figure with a questioning gaze.
He gave up trying to deduce the problem and shrugged his interest off. He figured not to try and pry into it, he would find out though and with a brief second glance into his sister’s direction, he dashed down the shrine steps for his ball.

“I’m home!” Kagome called from the foyer while removing her school shoes
“Oh, Kagome dear!”  Her mother beamed, heading popping out of the kitchen with a bright smile adorning her older features.  “Dinner will be ready soon. We’re having oden!”
“Really! Thanks mama, I’ll be right back then.” Somehow the thought of having oden for dinner brought her out of her slump and made the younger Higurashi female feel better.
Dashing up the stairs to discard of her backpack and to change into more comfortable clothing, Kagome opted to put the entire thought of her friendship with Inuyasha behind her and not let it further put a damper on her evening.
“All I need is some good quality family time.” She beamed happily. “Yep, just what I need!”
After getting changed and making note of what homework needed to be done for the night, she headed back downstairs to help her mother with dinner and give into the warmth of what she hoped would be good family time.

“Hey Kikyou, sorry I’m late.”  The youth admonished quickly as he made to sit down in the baby blue plastic chair across from the frowning young woman.
“Whatever, I’m not staying. I don’t like tardy dates. I have other stuff to do.” She spat snidely, making to get up from her seat.
Rolling his eyes, Inuyasha simply stated, “Don’t start with your bullshit, sit down and let’s do what we had planned before I got set back.”
Raising an immaculately trimmed eyebrow slightly, Kikyou remained seated, folded her hands across her chest, and simply glowered at Inuyasha.
“How dare you speak to me like that?”  She asked in an angry but hushed tone as to not draw attention.
With a smirk, he replied, “Well it worked didn’t it? You’re sitting and barely bitching.” After a slight pause, “Look Kikyou, I don’t want to have an argument, I just want to have a nice meal with and establish where we are exactly after that little stunt you pulled.”
“Well…” she stated with an air of haughtiness, “… as I told you I didn’t mean for it to happen, nor did I respond to his advances. I don’t know what gave him the idea to push himself on me like that.” Softening her voice in order to sound charismatic she added “But I’m sorry for what had happened Inuyasha, and I’d like to move on from this incident and possibly make amends in sorts of becoming your girlfriend and you my one and only.” Having held her head down, she looked back at Inuyasha with a small smile and a look of hope in her eyes.
Smelling no deceit to her admission with his demonic nose, Inuyasha quickly quirked an eyebrow, then with a smirk said, “Well then girlfriend, let us eat shall we? And you can tell me more about our newly found relationship.”
With that, the new couple proceeded to bask in each other’s’ presence and enjoy the sanctity of what they thought for now… a beautiful and well deserved union.
