I do not own the fairy tale "Beauty and the Beast" though I own many books of it, retellings, and the Disney movie, as well as three other movies of it. I do, however, own this piece of writing, which makes it MINE. You steal it, I kidnap you and sell you to Jaken to be his new love slave. ::Jaken pants and licks his beak, wiggling his eyebrows at you:: Yeah, be afraid. Be very afraid.
Her first real memory was of the dream. But it was not just any dream, no, it was of him. Though she'd dreamt of him her whole life she could understand why or what made her feel loved and threatened at the same.
In her dream she was walking up what seemed to be an endless flight of stairs. They were wide, covered in a soft velvet of dark red, and the light was dim, making her feel as if she were the only person in the whole world.
Around her she could hear faint voices echoing, calling to her. Some told her too turn back, that she was running to her death, and others told her to go on, to not give up. Whatever they would say she didn't care, they were not why she was there.
There were times when she would wake up there, and others when she reach the end of the stairs. She would be faced with heavy oak doors, and she somehow managed to get them open. Once inside she would a see a man...yet he was not quite human. His hair was a blinding white, atop his head sat two dog like ears, and his eyes were a haunting gold.
They were filled with sorrow and pain; pain so deep tears would spring to her eyes and all she wanted to do was throw herself on him, cover him with kisses. To make the pain in him go away, to make him feel loved.
He would then whisper her name, reaching out to her when she would wake.
She never got farther then that.
It was after having this dream that her first memory began. She woke up, screaming and crying, her heart in pieces. She could not understand, at that young age, what about that dream caused her such pain...she only knew that it did, and having it made her feel as if she was cut open.
Her mother came to her then, smelling of beautiful roses, her hands and voice soft and tender. She soothed her, assuring her that it was okay, that it had only been a dream.
"Don't be frightened, my little one. It was only a dream. Mama is here now."
It was not long after that, only a year, that her mother died. Her memories of that were broken and disjointed, all tears and whispers. She wandered around her home, tugging on skirts and pants legs, asking for her mother, hiding in her mother's dressing room to be around all the beautiful things her mother had left behind.
"Where is my mama?" She asked everyone, eyes large and filled with tears.
"Poor little Kagome." They would whisper to each other, giving her pitying looks. "She'll never know her mother. Poor, poor little Kagome."
It was only six months after her mothers death when her father hung himself in his study, leaving the young Kagome alone and parentless.
Thankfully her grandfather took her then. She latched on to him at once, and he became the most important person in the world to her.
She grew up happy, if not saddened by her dream, and her grandfather helped her to grow and build on the powers of healing she had.
She was happily oblivious to the outside world when her grandfather broke her happy little bubble.
"You're seventeen now, Kagome. Its time we started thinking about finding you a husband." Kagome had been shocked into silence, her eyes wide as she stared at her grandfather for long moments.
"Don't you want me to stay here with you?" She asked softly. Her grandfather sighed, setting his cup of tea down, folding his hands together. He took a deep breath, trying to think of how to approach this.
"You know I wish that I could keep you here with me forever. But I won't be here forever, Kagome, and I want to know that you are taken care of." Kagome felt her heart drop and she looked away, her eyes downcast.
"Jiichan...I don't want you too die. I don't want to be alone."
"That's why we need to find you a husband. Whatever happens though, I will not force you into marriage. I want you to be happy." Kagome nodded, then promptly put it too the back of her mind. She would not marry. No, she wanted none of the men in her village...only the one that haunted her dreams.
She went about her daily life as normal, oblivious (or so she wished) the fact that her grandfather had picked, out of many men, the two that he would allow to court his grand daughter.
They had to be the most irritating men on earth, of course. Hojo was kind and sweet, though the most oblivious person on the face of the earth. He had no brain, just rocks rumbling around in his head, and while Kagome could never find it in herself to tell to leave her be, her time with him made her quite sure her brains were leaking out of her ears.
The other was Kouga, the leader of the wolf demon pack that protected her village, and if she married him (which most the village hoped she would) it would insure that the village would always be protected. However, Kouga had as much brain capacity as Hojo, and thought of himself as the greatest male (human, demon, whatever else) there was on the face of the plant, therefore there was really no chance that Kagome WOULDN'T mate with him.
Her grandfather honestly didn't care which one would chose, knowing that with either she would be taken care of and loved.
Kagome secretly thought he was off his rocker if he thought she would marry either of them.
She was off the in the woods picking herbs, escaping from Kouga and Hojo and their courtship. She hummed to herself, walking through the woods, taking in the serenity of them, and had lost track of time. The sun was setting and she knew it was time for her to go home, else she would be in the woods after dark, and that was never a good thing.
Of course, getting home would have been a lot easier if she hadn't gone off into her own little world and gotten lost.
She wandered around, quite sure she was going to be forced to climb a tree and sleep there for the night, when she came upon a large castle, protected by a stone wall and large iron gates. She tilted her head and blinked at it, never having seen it before, knowing that she had wandered quite far away, and pushed the gate open stepping in. She made her way up the gravel drive, eyes darting around, her stomach twisting into knots. She knocked hesitantly on the large front doors, pushing one open and poking her head in when no one answered.
"Hello?" her voice echoed the grand entry way, and her eyes went wide at the opulence of the castle. She stepped in, clutching her cloak to her as she looked around, in awe.
"Hello?" She repeated, a bit louder this time. She heard nothing, saw nothing, but within the span of seconds something had jumped at her, strong arms locking around her waist. She let out a scream, her hands trying to pry the arms off of her, and she was spun around suddenly.
"Master! Master, no! Stop!" She heard the low snarl and slowly looked up at her capture.
And straight into the golden eyes that had haunted her all of her life. She let out a gasp, reaching a hand up and cupping his cheek, his own eyes going wide at her touch.
"You're real." With that she fainted dead away.
