by Johin
Prologue :: Because He Will

It was sunset when a group of young travelers took a break
to set camp after having chanced upon a clearing. True, they were nearing a
small village, they had been aiming to reach that in the first place, but it
was also imminent that it would surely take out a lot from the group especially
from the three humans. The two women were already beat out enough, their muscles
aching from the strenuous walk they had gone through. Though both would loath
to stop now, it was imperative that they did.

"Let's settle down here then." Inuyasha stated seemingly
like an order, making them all abide by his word. He then went off to check
the area if it was free of any fiends that would entail any possible danger,
informing Kagome first before heading out.

The remaining members of the company then all slumped once
the hanyou had jumped out of sight, sighing at the same time, expressing their
weariness aloud unknowingly. Upon realizing that each of them they weren't
alone with their sentiments of apathy they began to laugh.

"Well I didn't know that Houshi-sama tires out easily."
Sango said teasingly as she stretched her legs languidly seeking comfort in
that simple act shifting of positions.

"Saa, Sango-san, I am but a monk. A cursed monk maybe but
I am no youkai like our dog eared friend over there. Plus it has been long since
we last stopped for a rest, dawn was it?" Miroku replied with mirth, closing
his eyes, finding some sort of peace in the darkness that momentarily enveloped
him.

Kagome just smiled at her other companions and thought of
the happy times they had spent like this, relaxed and free of worries, which
were quite a few. When she then felt a chill pass by her, it made her think
back again on the more pressing matters. If they stayed like this any longer
they'd kill themselves before they even got to any of the people or demons
that Naraku had set to pit against them. "Well, I don't know about you
guys but I'm famished, shall we prepare then?"

The others took the hint and nodded, all of them standing
up to comply except for Miroku. Sango offered to start the fire with what little
wood that was scattered in the clearing and once the flames were ablaze Kagome
began to prepare their food, merely reheating what was left of yesterday. Shippou
and Kirara then helped with what little they could do.

Miroku, after opening his eyes, looked on as his four companions
hurriedly did everything, though not really seeing. It had barely registered
in his mind what Kagome had even said, not even his replying to the girl distracted
him enough from the pain on his hand, and from his thoughts. He had only snapped
out of it when Shippou had tapped his knee.

    "Ora, Miroku, what're you doing?"

Miroku blinked and then smiled at the small fox. "I was setting
up a small blockade." He lied. Forcing himself to forget the gnawing pain on
his hand he set up the said barrier so that his conscience wouldn't bear
him down that night. Once finished, he grinned at his companions and said, "I'll
be heading out for some firewood. Those won't even last us the night."
He stood up and got the Shakujou which lay down beside him.

"Is that wise Miroku-san? It would be better if you brought
at least one of us with you." Kagome said concern etched in her face and apparently
Sango had the same thoughts with the miko and yet the devilish monk shook his
head.

"I'll be fine. It's not like I'm not capable
of putting up a fight besides if anything happened to any of you, Inuyasha would
surely have my head." Miroku explained still keeping up a cheery face. "Well
then I'm off."

"Take care then, Houshi-sama" He nodded then padded
off to the thick of the forest.

'It has come to my knowledge that we were a bit stupid
to take the way through the forest. But alas, we are pressured for time and…'
Miroku's thoughts trailed off as he moved with the silence of the wind.
He sighed. Maybe it had been better to have taken up Kagome-san's offer
of companionship in this small search.

Time went by quickly unbeknownst to him while he idly dealt
with the flickering pain on his palm and while he picked up a branch here or
there. He had not even realized he had moved on far from their camp and upon
gathering a large amount of plausible firewood he took in his surroundings.

He noticed that the trees were less around this area of
the forest. He noted that from a place not too far away were small lights and
a smell of cooking and fires, indicating human inhabitation. Puzzled by these
facts, he berated himself saying that, he could not have gone off that far from
his companions but here he was just a few meters away from the village they
had intended to stay in, in the first place. He moved in closer to the edge
of the forest wanting to see if it was indeed the town and not merely his imagination.
Upon reaching an area with a clear enough view he had clumsily let go of the
wood items he had picked up on his way to his present location. He was shocked
by the amount of youkai gathered before him. What was even more shocking that
he could faintly make out a familiar face, one that belonged to no other than
Inuyasha's half brother, Sesshoumaru.

Once snapping out of his surprise he ran up closer, keeping
his silence and hiding behind the shadows of the towering trees. The sun had
long gone to sleep and was then replaced by a crescent moon basking in the sky,
this provided him with much advantage within the darkness. He stopped in his
tracks once he was close enough to hear the ongoing conversation and once again
a small voice screamed at him saying how insane he was but was blocked out soon
enough. He pressed his body against the wood of a cottage behind him it was
far enough not to be detected but close enough to see. After concealing his
powers he poked his head out to see clearly the happenings before him. He got
a good view of the dog demon's face, it was still impassive as ever, and
yet he saw a slimmer of possessiveness, seemingly of what was behind him. Miroku's
eyes trailed down to what it could possibly be and seeing that he had to bend
down he did so. He had only seen a sea of feet and tails at first, but then
he found what he was looking for, it stuck out like a sore thumb. There were
humans inside the circle of demons, behind Sesshoumaru, most likely to be kids
for he could see neither head nor hair poking up. The kids had been quiet all
the time which was very unnerving for Miroku.

"Leave now. These children will die without their parents
anyway." Sesshoumaru said, his face betraying naught of anything he might have
felt at the moment.

"Then why save them if they're headed for the underworld
with or without our help." One sickeningly green youkai said

"Besides we're still hungry. We hadn't had a meal
for quite some time you know." Another one added stopping himself from jumping
onto their prey at that moment. All of the others made a gesture agreeing to
the latter who spoke, licking their lips, hissing or growling but all of them
were silenced by a hand that waved from the center area nearest to the human
children and Sesshoumaru.

Sesshoumaru looked on at them annoyed. This group wasn't
stupid, since they hadn't attacked him yet, apparently sensing that he
was no ordinary foe to cross swords with but still, they knew that even he,
with all his skill, could not win against this number before him. They had even
set up a tactic against him, their mere formation was formidable enough, those
smaller than him were in front so that if he were to wield his sword he would
have to stoop down to kill, those behind him were the tall ones and would pluck
out the children anytime they wanted too. There were also some demons hovering
around the air and one hidden directly below him. Plus, one of the biggest hindrances
in his win was the fact that he was protecting the children. He hadn't
really planned on doing so, but Rin had run off when she saw a girl her age
playing with some ball before the demons came; also because they had gotten
in his way he had 'unintentionally' ended up defending them.

So, yes, here he was irritated beyond comprehension with
his own stubbornness, though he failed to show it to his many peers. His right
hand then moved to the hilt of the Toukijin and his eyes scanned the area finding
some way to get at least one child out of here a live, most preferably Rin.

Miroku stood up straight once again and tilted his head
at the exchange. He scrutinized the area and saw the demon that served as transportation
for the dog demon, it was probably for the back area defense. If you examined
them closely you'd see that those behind lacked skill than the ones in
front, the first sign would be by the way they handled their weapons. He looked
at Sesshoumaru again, he was by now scanning the area but had come to an abrupt
stop when the dog demon had a look at the cottage Miroku was hiding in. Miroku
thought for a minute and then realized he was spotted. He grinned at the other
and motioned to the group awaiting his answer. He was answered by a glare.

Sesshoumaru became even more irritated upon spotting the
monk that was always tagging along that exterminator and his brother's
wench. His eyes slitted into a glare and then he brought his focus to the group,
or rather, battalion, surrounding the vicinity.

The one acting as leader was clearly getting impatient and
was growling rather loudly now. Sesshoumaru then rolled his eyes, an act clearly
unbecoming of him, but he seemed not himself for the night. One word that came
out from the lithe silver haired youkai set off everyone surrounding him "No."

He didn't know whether to smirk or to scold himself.
A lot of beings were so predictable even with this large amount but even still,
he had no plan formed in has mind and could only parry blows coming for the
children behind him. It was not an exaggeration when one would describe the
scene as demons closing in on them from everywhere.

He first confronted the one directly below him, cracking
the rich soil after making sure there was no more movement he wedged out his
sword and began attacking the ones in front aiming first for the two who had
thought to speak against him.

Miroku prepared himself and clutched the prayer beads that
temporarily held off his curse. He hadn't expected the reaction of the
demon army to be so quick to a single word and yet it was. He made mental note
to never do anything as reckless as going out of your party's camp ever
again as he witnessed the events unfold in front of him.

After thinking up of a plan which was the usual 'rush-in-and-attack'
plan, he got his seals ready and shot out of his hiding place running at dead
speed. Throwing the papers, he aimed towards the back of his enemies, effectively
sealing at least six demons. The strangled cry of the six from behind the group
caused enough shock for the others to give him enough lee way for Kazaana.

"Kazaana!" Miroku called, as if in reassurance for himself
that HE was still in control and not the stupid curse. After the attack having
effectively sucked up at least one-fourth of the 'army' he sealed
it again, seeing that those he had come to help would be endangered if he had
pressed on. He ran up to Sesshoumaru and smirked keeping up an alert stance.
"I never thought this day would come."

"Hn. It never even crossed my mind." Sesshoumaru answered
slightly pissed with the other's attitude and slightly thankful that the
monk had not turned tail. "Watch your own back, I won't be able to watch
it for you...and watch the kids."

After that minute of conversation came in a barrage of attacks
and squeals from both of the men's behinds, of course the kids weren't
used to blood and gore. Miroku concentrated inusing his Kazaana and sucked up
whatever demon that came into his sight. Having already dealt with enough youki,
he sealed his own curse and created a barrier, to protect the children and himself,
making it stronger than the one he had done for Kagome and the others.

'Damn! They're probably wondering where I am by
now' His thoughts strained and his concentration faltering for a minute
enough time for one demon to lash out at him and render him useless for a few
moments as he was sprawled down on the ground. Some kids had encircled the monk
and some had squirmed in fright.

Miroku's attacker looked down on him and was about to
hit the dumbfounded male when he was countered by another sword. "I told you
to watch your back. Stand up!" Sesshoumaru screamed to be heard over the growling
and hissing.
Miroku then set up the barrier again noticing that the amount
of children to protect had lessened by at least a few. He scrutinized the area
all the while defending the kids and then he found them- the missing ones.

    "Sesshoumaru, to your right!"

The dog demon had not expected that call and was therefore
attacked by five lucky imps hitting at his right arm. Surprised but unfaltering
he tried to shake the five off when he attacked to the right as the monk had
pointed out. He eventually killed a row of demons and deterring them from feasting
any more.

Miroku threw a wad of seals towards the clutter of children
who had gone astray and was by now crying for all their worth, rendering them
immobile and untouchable by anyone excluding himself from that list. He searched
for his ally and found him struggling to get the imps off him while he used
his whip to attack anyone near him. The five, being impertinent as they are
did not break loose from their hold onto Sesshoumaru until everyone heard a
sickening crack in the air. He winced.
Their enemies had dwindled to a fourth of their original
number but Sesshoumaru was in no shape to fight. With a missing left arm a broken
right arm and a bleeding head, he wouldn't even able to block any attack
that would come. The five imps still on his arm was about to eat his flesh but
Sesshoumaru had use the Dokkasou and as a last resort, Sesshoumaru used his
'whip' willing it to suffocate whatever number of youkai it could
hold.

Yes it was a very annoying day for Sesshoumaru and that was his last thought before he blacked out.

'This is not good' Miroku said to himself. Yes,
he had successfully protected the kids, even that transportation youkai which
Rin had referred to as Aun. Unconsciously, Miroku held onto the nearest kid
that was apparently Sesshoumaru's little tag along... and for further assurance
that no one would be able to get out of his reach he had made them sleep with
the seals he had so that they wouldn't even be able to try.

Sesshoumaru on the other hand... well let's just say
he repeated what he did with the stray kids to the older man. It was extremely
evil to leave the guy alone to be demon food but he'd bet his life that
the other would think it more evil that he'd watched as he was weak and
down.

'Definitely not good, we're sitting ducks and if
no one comes... before I lose any more power we'll definitely be dead meat.'
Miroku thought, making the wheels in his mind turn for a way out but in the
end found none.

The youkai apparently knew that there would come a time wherein
the seals would wear off, where in his powers would be depleted, and therefore
taunted the monk, as they thought of the many ways to break the kids and him.
It was disgusting really. Everything that came to mind they said a loud, from
a brutal death to a mass rape to simply eating them alive. Yes, it was sickening
to the bone.

Blocking out everything everyone was saying, he started concentrating
on the three barriers he had made. He could only pray that Inuyasha or anyone
of his companions might come to the village in time.

A/N:
I'm a sick person. ANYWAY, here it is, my first Inuyasha fanfic where in it
is shounen ai. Yeah I like Sess-miro and it is all because of Katalyst-san's
works and her website. So there, spoiler, that is if you hadn't gathered
that already. Oh and if anyone is adamant about saying how impossible it is
happen in the anime I already know that so don't bother telling me. I like Miroku
and sango together it's just that... it's already in the anime/manga... I don't
need to make a fic of it anymore.

Miroku is a bit out off it here though. Okay it's not just a bit, he really
is out of it. So we can put him under the category of being OOC XD not THAT
much though. Argh, even Sesshoumaru is OOC...Ah the OOCness it's so fun
to watch ><
