InuYasha Fan Fiction ❯ Best Friends Forever ❯ best friends forever ( Chapter 1 )
Best Friends Forever
Kagome Higurashi finished getting the last of her books out of her locker and stuffed all she could into her large yellow backpack Friday afternoon. After closing the pale orange locker and walked down the hallway towards the double doors to make her way home.
"Oh look, there goes Miss Perfect, do `ya think her inflated head will fit through the door?" a group of boys snickered as she passed by them. She ignored them of course, it wasn't like it was any different from any other day. Of course they would say shit like that, she had good grades and came from one of the most wealthiest families from the whole school.
But that still doesn't stop them from treating me like this, she thought bitterly as she exited the building and walked down the steps of the highschool. She had recently moved to Tokyo because of a business deal her father made with some company in the area.
About 5 blocks later she came to her neighborhood which was made up of mostly fancy-looking houses. There was no one in the streets, most of the people that lived in this part of town all stayed inside the comfort of their homes counting their money or having a good time at parties or vacations.
Kagome walked up to the 5th house in, unlocked and opened the door. She wasn't surprised when she found the entire 2-story house empty. She slipped off her shoes and set them and her backpack down next to the door. Walking into the kitchen hoping to get a snack before she started her homework, she noticed a short note on the counter. It read:
Your father and I went out to a dinner with some business associates. Be back late, there's dinner in the fridge.
-Mom
Kagome sighed and went about making a quick sandwich. At least I'll have plenty of time to myself to... relax...
***
The walls seemed to swirl and warp around her in many different colors as she lay limply on her bed, half-completed homework forgotten on the desk on the other side of the room next to an open bottle of pills. The lamp beside the bed seemed to cast shadows that pranced around happily before her eyes. Silly shadows, she thought, laughing drunkenly out loud to herself in the empty room. The shadows(as well as practically every other object in the room) were her favorite things to have conversations with. Especially the floating fish that swam in midair... They didn't judge her or ignore her and they understood her perfectly.
But it seemed tonight, there was one extra shadow tonight, one that wasn't frolicking with the others. Curious, Kagome wobbly sat up and tried her bets to focus on the new "shadow." It seemed different than the others... Almost real... In fact it looked more like a boy standing in the middle of the room staring at her.
"Who are yoooou?" Kagome drawled in a slightly giddy voice. It seemed the drugs had quite a while longer before they would wear-out.
The lone figure stood silent for a few moments just staring at her. Then he finally spoke- "You know, you're going to kill yourself if you keep this up." He made his way beside her on the bed.
Kagome gave the boy a slightly drunken smile. "Your so cuuuute... what's you name little boy?" Nope, drugs weren't letting up any time soon.
The strange white haired, dog eared boy gave her a flustered look. "Erm, my name is Inuyasha... and I'm about your age by the way." he said. "Look, your not in the best of conditions now, I think you should lay down before you hurt yourself," he stated as he gently eased the 15-year-old back on the pink-clad bed.
"Okay then," Kagome said with a yawn and studied the strange new person. "Hmm.... You have kitty ears!" she pointed out with laugh.
Inuyasha, from his position next to the bed, looked mortified. "I `aint no fucking cat, I'm a dog hanyou!" he exclaimed indignantly.
"Ooh..." she said with and enlightened look upon her face. "They look so fuzzy... I want to touch them..."
"Wha? Wait, no-!" he tried to stop her but it was a lost cause seeing as her hands here already latched on to his furry appendages. Inuyasha sighed and reminded himself he couldn't expect much better from the girl in he state of mind.
After a few tries, he managed to pry Kagome's hands away from his ears, earning a small pout from the said girl. Then, seemingly out of the blue, she asked, "Are you my imaginary friend?"
Inuyasha was about to deny but then he thought, Its better to have her believe that for now. "Uhm, yea, I'm your imaginary friend..." he said trying to be as convincing as possible.... Which really wasn't very convincing at all but Kagome didn't notice.
"Oh, that's good. It's nice to finally have a friend..." she said drowsily. She eventually slipped into a peaceful sleep after mindlessly staring at his ears.
Inuyasha stared at her soft, pale face for a few moments. "Well, it looks like I finally have someone to talk to after all these years..." he whispered to himself with a tired sigh. He got up to his feet and seemed to start to make his way out of the room. He took a few steps away from the bed before disappearing into thin air.
***
It was the sunlight shining through the window that woke a groggy Kagome the next morning. The sunlight did nothing to help her mood as she had an enormous headache. She let out a tired groan as she struggled to sit up in her bed.
I had the weirdest dream last night... she thought as she lethargically made her way to her bathroom for her daily morning ritual. I had met a boy, he had the strangest clothes, white hair and... dog ears? "I guess I shouldn't have taken so many hits..." she mumbled as she stepped into the warm shower.
Kagome came back into her room about 15 minutes later, towel wrapped securely around her body. Walking over to the bureau, she felt like something was... out of place. She did a double take of her bed. Nope, that boy defiantly wasn't there sitting on her bed when she woke up.
He stared at her blankly.
She stared back with a shocked expression.
His ear twitched.
She inhaled sharply as if to scream.
Now it was his turn to have a horrified expression. "W-Wait, don't-!" he started.
Too late.
Kagome let out a short high-pitched scream and jumped back away from the dog-eared boy on her bed, covering herself up with as much modesty as possible.
"Who are you?!" she demanded frantically.
Before he could answer, Kagome's mother came and opened the door. "Is every thing all right in here sweety? I thought I heard you scream." Mrs. Higurashi took a quick glance around the room.. She didn't seem to notice the strange boy sitting Indian-style on her daughter's bed, watching the scene with an amused expression.
Can she not see him? She asked herself as she looked back at the red-clad boy. Maybe only I can see him... I thought there was something strange about him. She looked back at her mother standing at the doorway. It's probably best to not tell her about him, she'll think I really HAVE gone insane...
"Oh, umm, I... just saw a spider, that's all. It's gone now," she reassured her mother.
Inuyasha was surprised that Kagome didn't tell her mother about him. He was almost sure that she would been hysterical, yelling at her mother that there was a strange man on her bed. She's more cool headed than I gave her credit for.
"Okay dear. Listen, your father and I are planning to go to go visit Uncle Henry today. Do you want to come with?" asked Mrs. Higurashi.
Ugh, not that fat, bald pervert. He's always staring at my legs... Kinda wrong considering we're related, she thought with a slight shiver of disgust. "No thanks, I'll just stay home and work on my homework," she told her mother with a false smile.
"If your sure... Your father and I will be leaving in a few minutes. Snacks are in the fridge!" Mrs. Higurashi said as she departed, closing the door after her.
Kagome let out a tires sigh and slumped back against the wall. Inuyasha hadn't moved from his spot during the whole conversation. His perch on Kagome's bed was quite comfortable after all.
"So... Back to our little chat... Who are you?" Kagome questioned in a calmer voice.
"Huh, you really don't remember me do ya?" he said feinting a hurt expression. His ears sensitive ears were still ringing from Kagome's scream from earlier. "Does yanking my ears while tripping out ring any bells?"
Kagome stared at him confused for a moment. Then it all came back to her. The swirling colors, the boy with the dog ears... the floating fish... What an odd night.
"I remember you now... Inu...washa? No, that's not it..." she muttered.
"It's Inuyasha," he said
"Oh yeah, Inuyasha... Uhmm, sorry about the ears, by the way," she apologized with a small blush.
Inuyasha just grunted in response.
They stayed in their places, fidgeting in the awkward silence.
"Err, could you turn around...?" she asked, gesturing to the cloths still within the dresser hoping he would get the hint that she would feel more comfortable talking to him fully clothed.
Inuyasha shrugged and turned himself around with a short "keh."
After she was sure that he wouldn't peek, Kagome quickly got dressed in a simple genes and T-shirt. It wasn't like she was going anywhere special today.
"Erm, you can turn around now." she told Inuyasha. He obeyed.
"So... Any other questions you're wanting to ask me?" asked Inuyasha, trying to start a decent conversation with the girl. The awkward silence was beginning to get on his nerves.
Kagome fidgeted slightly, unsure of how to ask the question that has been on her mind since she first laid eyes on him. "Well, there is one thing I've been wanting to ask you..." she started, eyes traveling up to his ears. Inuyasha understood then.
"You want to know that the hell I am, huh?" he stated with a small smirk. "I did tell you last night... but it looks like you weren't in any condition to really listen to a word I was saying were you?"
"Wha- Argh, look, could you just answer the question?" she said with a blush. She really didn't want to go back to the topic of what she was doing last night.
"Keh, I'm an inu hanyou, a half dog demon," he said, although truly not all proud to admit it. His past life was hell just because of what he was. But that was just it, it was all in the past. He was in the process of making some hope for his once bleak future.
Kagomes' eyes widened. "Half dog demon? But... demons don't exist... they're just myths."
"If that's true that how am I here sitting in front you?" he said.
Kagome didn't have an answer. But then another thought came to her. "Am I the only one that can see you? My mom was in the same room earlier but she acted like she didn't even see you."
"Yeah, that's all true. I'm not really sure how all this works out myself..." Inuyasha started. For a moment, he stared thoughtfully at Kagome. "But I don't think our meeting was just buy chance..."
Kagome shifted her gaze to the ground, thinking. "Maybe... someone up there decided to take pity on our lives..." she said quietly, mostly to herself. Then she sighed and said in the same voice, "ether that or I really am going insane..." Inuyasha's sharp hearing didn't miss her softly spoken words When Kagome lifted her head to look back at Inuyasha, she was surprised to see a small smile adorning his face.
"Maybe your right, maybe we have finally gotten the chance to make our lives just a little bit better." His smile then turned into a smirk. "Then again, maybe you are insane and I'm nothing more than a figment of your imagination."
Kagome then did something she didn't remember doing for weeks. She laughed. "Maybe. Maybe..."
It was the start of a very odd, but strong friendship.

The lockers made a loud crashing noise as it abruptly came into contact with her body. Bracing herself up against the lockers, she managed to steady herself, giving a cold glare to the cause of her unwanted re-introduction to the cold metal.
"Watch where your going princess," spat one of the members of the "tough guy" group of the school. The rest of the boys just laughed as is it was the funniest thing they had ever seen.
Gritting her teeth in the effort to ignore them, she stiffly brushed herself off and continued her pilgrimage to the school doors leading to the outside world.
"Oh, what, we not good enough for you, is that it?" gloated Kouga, the leader of the group. His cronies snickered behind him. Catching up to Kagome, he whispered in her ear, "Hey, how `bout we go out? I'll be sure to give you the royal treatment..." He said this in what was supposed to be a seductively husky voice. Kagome found it revolting.
"I don't think so," she replied curtly, never once slowing down on her journey towards the crowded double doors. It wasn't her fault that her locker just so happened to be one of the farthest from the exit.
"Oh man, you gonna take that shit boss?" one of the group members sporting mohawk questioned. They all followed Kouga like an extended shadow.
Kouga looked that the profile of Kagome's emotionless face coldly. "I'm afraid I won't settle for a `no'..." By then, Kagome and her unwanted followers had exited the building.
"Well it looks like you going to have to this time..." she stated firmly. Kouga was the stereotypical playboy of the school. Being the quarterback of the football team, extremely handsome, and much of the female population panting after him like bitches in heat, he had it made and there was almost nothing her thought he couldn't get. That fact sickened Kagome. There was no way she was going to give in to being another one of his play things.
Suddenly, he reached out and roughly grabbed her wrist forcing her to a stop. Kouga Ookami was not one to be rejected by ANYONE. He was also no push-over...
***
Kagome came home with a few extra bruises. Well that worked out surprisingly well... she mused. After being re-acquainted with the concrete sidewalk, Kagome showed Kouga her appreciation by acquainting her foot to his groin. While the rest of his buddies were scrambling to help up their leader, Kagome high-tailed it out of there.
Sighing as she finally got up to her room and closed the door, she decided that she didn't want to start of her home work just yet, opting to flop down on her bed and stare at the ceiling a bit. Her parents wouldn't be home for about another hour so she had time to kill.
"Where'd all those bruises come from?" demanded a gruff voice from her right.
Kagome turned her head and met the amber eyes of her best friend. "Same place as last time. Those idiots decided that they would try their luck again and this time I gave them a good reason to stay away," she said with a small smile.
It had been a little over two weeks since Kagome had first met Inuyasha and in that time, she had gained the closest friends she ever really had. Sure there were a few acquaintances at school but they only ever talked to her in order to get homework answers. But Kagome had never trusted anyone so much in her whole life as she did Inuyasha. She never even really questioned what he was... other than being a half demon of course. Even if she really had gone insane and was hallucinating the whole thing, she didn't really care at this point. It was nice to finally have someone who you can really talk to.
After telling Inuyasha what happened, he gave Kagome an unsure look. "Are you sure that was a good idea? They could come back and make you pay for it..."
Kagome offered him a smile. "Don't worry about me, I'll be careful." Inuyasha still looked slightly worried, unconvinced. "I promise I will," she said gently and she reached out and stroked his ears from his position beside her bed. Inuyasha let out a small "keh" and lazily leaned against the bed and closed his eyes, enjoying the attention. It wasn't like anyone was going to see them or else he would have never let anyone near the appendages that marked him a hanyou.
It was always a strange feeling to touch Inuyasha. His skin was always cold to the touch, no matter what the temperature around him was like. But it didn't matter. Even if his body was cold, he always managed to warm her heart as well as making her truly happy for the first time in years. It didn't matter what he was or who he is, he was her only friend, and she was perfectly content with that.
After a few minutes of having some time to think to themselves, Inuyasha was the first one to break the silence. "Why are you here with me...?"
Kagome paused in her actions and gave him a confused look. "What do you mean?"
"I mean... don't you have anywhere else to be?" he started, turning to look at her. "Surely you have better things to do than sit around with someone who you've recently met and can only be seen by you. You don't seem like the type to honestly not have anything better to do."
Kagome just shrugged. "That's just it though. There is nothing that I honestly think is worth doing. Even if I wanted to get involved in something, I wouldn't be able to..." She had a far off look in her eyes. "No one would treat me like a normal person because I'm just the `stuck-up rich kid.'"
Now it was Inuyasha's turn to be confused. After choosing to get up and sit beside her form on the bed he asked, "Why would they think that? We've only just met and I can see that you're a good person."
Kagome smiled bitterly, shifting into an up-right sitting position next to Inuyasha. "That's only because you're the only person who ever really took the time to get to know be before making judgements." Her smile softened as she gazed at the twin pools of molten gold. "As I've said before, its nice to finally have a friend..."
"Yeah..." Inuyasha replied distractedly. He couldn't seem to bring himself to look away from her soft features. What the hell is wrong with me, he thought, finally managing to tear his gaze away from her and stare off at some random spot on the carpet. Why am I reacting like this to her... I know I shouldn't... Not after what happened last time. But I guess, given my current situation, I don't really have anything to lose. He let out a soft sigh. It might ne selfish but gods, I NEED to know what it feels like to be cared for... something that has been denied to me in the past lifetime...
Inuyasha hadn't been the only one to be reluctant in breaking their gaze. His eyes of burning amber had entranced Kagome. She couldn't even bring herself to look away as he shifted his eyes elsewhere. Why am I feeling like this... its as though something is keeping me from looking away... After a few moments, she herself managed to pry her gaze away from the hanyou. I can't be falling in love with him could I? I mean I know I care for him... a lot. But, love him? Her eyes had subconsciously drifted back toward Inuyasha's profile.
Inuyasha sensed Kagomes returning gaze on him and also turned to look back at the girl. His expression was unreadable but thoughtful. What he said next surprised Kagome. "Thank you... for being with me." Before she could question him he continued. "Before I met you, I was looked down upon by every one. Humans and demons alike." He bowed his head and his face contorted with haunting old pain. "Humans feared me, youkai hated me. I was ether running or fighting for my life back then... just trying to survive." He looked up to see Kagome's eyes shining with unshed tears as he looked back at him with sympathy. "That's why I feel so privileged and so fortunate to have to have someone like you who doesn't fear me or hate me..." He fidgeted a bit after finishing, unused to being so open with someone.
"Oh, Inuyasha..." she said sadly. It pained her that such a wonderful person could be treated with such hatred.
Inuyasha was surprised when he felt Kagome lean over and gently embrace him, her head resting on his shoulder. For a few moments he didn't move, unsure of how to react. Then he turned toward her and awkwardly hugged her back.
"You didn't deserve it, Inuyasha... You didn't deserve any of it," she murmured. Inuyasha's ears caught her softly spoken words clearly. He didn't say anything but pulled her closer to him, nuzzling her hair and breathing in her sweet sent. They didn't know how long they stayed in that position but they decided they didn't care. They both basked in the warmth of companionship. At one point Kagome had lifted her head to look at Inuyasha's face. Inuyasha felt her gaze and eventually returned it, their faces just inches away from each other. Neither was sure who initiated it, but the decided they didn't care when their lips had met in a soft kiss. It was tentative and unsure at first but it quickly gained passion once they settled into their unspoken rhythm.
His lips were gentle and caressing as they moved against Kagome's. It was her very first kiss, she was happy to share it with someone like Inuyasha, the single person in her life she most trusted. One thing was still the same though- his lips, as well as any other part of his body, held the strange coldness. But that didn't matter to Kagome. His flesh may have been cold but the feelings he invoked on her were warm.
This can't be real... This thought kept repeating itself in Inuyasha's head. Yet, the longer the kiss dragged on, as it's intensity increased with every passing second, the more he realized that it was reality. He had found love.
They were in love.
***
Kagome was happy. It was not every day that you could fit "Kagome" and "happy" in the same sentence. Oh sure, it had been thought and said but never really meant. But as Kagome made her way through the hallways of her school, she couldn't remember any other time where she had felt so truly happy.
Last night had felt like some kind of story book scene, Kagome thought as she was shifting through the contents of her locker. Ether that, or some really sappy chick flick. Kagome giggled. For once she couldn't wait to get back home.
Kagome practically skipped her way down the school's stairs, in the process receiving a few bewildered stares. Kagome was oblivious to all the looks she was receiving. Who wouldn't be if you had cuddling with a new-found lover to look foreword to.
Apparently fate had some other plans.
Almost at the exit of the parking lot, she felt a strong hand roughly grasp her forearm and bring her to an abrupt stop. Turning around to tell off whoever it was that stopped her, she realized who it was and felt her heart sink with dread.
Kouga.
He looked down at her with an expression of distaste. "I believe you owe me an apology for your actions last time we met..."
Kagome scowled at him. "I don't owe you anything. Dammit, let go of me Kouga." His grip only tightened.
Kouga's eyes turned cold. "I don't think you know you place very well, bitch."
Kagome was starting to become scared. Shit... How the am I going to get out of this? Last time was just a fluke... She was in trouble. Kouga's gang has stepped forward and surrounded them in a tight circle. Trouble? More like deep shit.
Panicked, Kagome started to struggle out of Kouga's grip but was easily overpowered by the star football quarterback. A well aimed punch to the cheek sent her to the ground. The kicks to every part of her body kept her there.
"Stupid bitch," Kouga snarled. Kagome cried out in pain as Kouga grabbed her roughly by the hair. "You should be fucking grateful that I'm even talking to you. Just cause mommy and daddy are loaded doesn't mean you can strut around like your better than the rest of us. You're at the bottom of the food chain here bitch, don't you fucking forget it," he ground out giving a sharp jerk to emphasize his point. Kagome whimpered. "I'm still waiting for that fucking apology bitch!"
"I- I'm sorry," she choked out reluctantly. Why... Why did this have to happen again. Why now...? Like old wounds reopening, she felt the depression and self-hatred seep back into her consciousness. What ever happiness she had once before was ripped away and put far out of reach.
Kouga studied her, lightly touching the curve of her jaw. His lips curled into a lustful smirk. "Tell you what, I'll forgive you when you're ready to go out with me. I promise you lots of fun." With that he released Kagome's hair and walked away, his buddies trailing behind him.
Kagome hadn't noticed when she left. She didn't know how long she had lain there at the secluded corner of the school parking lot. She didn't even remember getting up and walking back home. She felt completely numb. Somehow she knew in the back of her mind a way to make the numbness go away. It would have a much stronger effect than the pills could ever give.
***
Something was wrong.
Inuyasha couldn't shake the unexplainable feeling in his gut. It was a nice warm Friday afternoon from his perch on a random tree at the park nearby Kagome's house. But it didn't help sooth the unease that Inuyasha felt.
Not knowing what else to do, he thought back to the night before and his new bond with Kagome. To Inuyasha, it had been nothing more than a miracle that someone like Kagome had accepted him so fully. Feeling the complete trust Kagome had in him though their kiss had made him the happiest that he had been in a very long time. Too long entirely, he thought with a small sigh.
He had felt nothing but content since the night before. But why the hell am I feeling to anxious all of a sudden? It's like something bad is about to happen. As is some outside force had heard him, this thoughts were answered when a gentle breeze overcame the tree, lightly rustling the leaves. There was a sent in the air, one that made Inuyasha sick to his stomach.
Kagome's blood... He bolted towards her house, the origin of the sent.
***
Kagome came home to find the house, as usual, empty. She didn't know how she had ended up in her room shirtless except for a bra in her room. He didn't know how one of the kitchen knives had come into her hands. She didn't care. She just didn't care anymore.
She hated it.
She watched mesmerized as drops of liquid red fell from a deep cut in her left forearm. There was pain. But she welcomed it. It felt good to feel again. The numbness of her heart seeped away with the blood.
The searing pain felt so real. It was wonderful. The small puddle of red grew around her and sparkles prettily in the rays of the dying sunlight. It was in that light that she saw the same shadow that she had seen those many nights ago. Although this time, something at the back of Kagome's mind knew that it wasn't really there.
With her back to her window, she slowly turned to see the form of Inuyasha staring at her with a hollow expression. Somehow she was able to offer him a small smile. "Inuyasha... I'm sorry you had to see me like this." The numerous deep cuts on her torso and arms glistened in the dwindling light. "You must be ashamed of me for stooping so low as to do something so fucked up like this." She dropped the knife, her limbs becoming to tired to do much more than hold herself upright at the moment.
Inuyasha's face, while mostly expressionless, held some sadness and pity. "It's ok Kagome... I don't blame you." He took the few steps towards her, kneeled down and gently wrapped his arms around the broken soul, oblivious to her state of undress and the blood that seeped steadily out of her wounds..
Kagome's weak form immediately collapsed in his hold. She whimpered, the sharp pain of her wounds finally registering to her mind. Yet as the life drained from her, she couldn't help but notice Inuyasha's robes didn't stain with her blood. "I'm sorry.... so sorry..." She felt tears running down her cheek. "I really did it this time... I don't think I'll be able to get up again." Her vision swam before her. So this is it... this is how it ends. At least Inuyasha is with me...
Inuyasha lightly shushed her and gently stroked her hair. His love reeked of death. "It's okay Kagome. Just let go.... You don't deserve this pain." He leaned down and kissed her brow. "I'll always be with you. I'll catch you on the Other Side..."
By then Kagome was having trouble thinking coherent thoughts. But she had understood what Inuyasha had said. With the last bit of her strength she whispered, "You'll always be my best friend Inuyasha... I love you."
Inuyasha slightly tightened his hold on the dying girl. "I love you too..."
A broken soul was lost with the dying day.
***
Kagome Higurashi's parents would come in to their home late that night to discover their only daughter dead in a puddle of her own blood, a peaceful expression upon her face. They were devastated as any parent should be. But neither took the time to truly think about what they could have done to stop such a fate.
A small funeral would be held a few days later.
For several weeks it would be the main topic of gossip at school about that girl that nobody really knew had committed suicide.
There were many theories born as an explanation for the girl's reasons for ending her life. Some suggested it was boyfriend problems. Others thought she had just gone too far for attention. Over all, they thought her a fool for doing such a thing and eventually forgot about her.
Nobody would have thought that it would only have taken acceptance and friendship to save a life.
***
Warmth. The first thing Kagome had felt was warmth surrounding her, caressing her. It felt so peaceful, almost like a dream. But it wasn't. The sight that greeted Kagome as she opened her eyes was breathtaking.
She sat atop a small hill covered in beautiful flowers that stretched as far as the eye could see. In the distance she could see the border of what looked like the entrance to a forest as well as a nearby lake, its waters crystal clear. The sky above was the purest shade of blue as she had ever seen.
It was at that moment she had noticed where the warmth she had felt originated from. Strong arms covered in red flowing sleeves held her close to their owner's body. Inuyasha... she thought in amazement. He's so warm...
Inuyasha was looking ahead at their surroundings in similar wonderment as she had. He felt er eyes on him and looked down at her to meet her gaze. He smiled. "Hey."
Kagome returned his smile. "Hey yourself." She paused, taking in their surroundings once again. "Where are we...?"
Inuyasha's smile widened. "Heaven," he simply said.
Kagome turned back to look at him, surprised. "Heaven? How are we in heaven? Wait- did I... die?" Inuyasha solemnly nodded. "But, why are you here too?"
"I was already dead," replied Inuyasha. " I have been wandering the earth for centuries as a lost soul, a ghost. That is, until now."
"So that explains the old clothes," Kagome thought out loud.
They sat together in silence to a while, taking in all the recent events. A thought came to Kagome. "Hey, not to be rude but, how did you die?" Right after she asked the question she realized just how insensitive she was being. Well it couldn't hurt that much. I mean, he's had to have lived with it for several centuries.
Inuyasha just shrugged. "Same way you did I guess. As I've told you before, doth humans and demons alike looked down on me. As a result, I was lonely." His eyes glazed with old pain. " But... there had been one other friend I ever had. He was a priestess at a local village. She was always very kind to me and I started to develop feelings for her. But when I tried to express them, she rejected me... After that I ran and went back to being alone.
"I guess the loneliness just became too much, not even my pride could stop me from feeling that there was nothing left to live for. So, one day, I was being pushed around by a pack of demons and something inside of me just gave up. I let them have their way with me." He paused. "I was never at peace, not even in death. I guess that's why I could never truly move on to the afterlife." A soft smile appeared on his features. "I guess some god was looking out for me, they brought me you didn't they?"
Despite the tears in her eyes, Kagome had to smile. How could she not? They were in heaven. Now, nothing could stop them from finding the happiness that had been missing all of their lives.
After some wriggling, Kagome was able turn herself around and return Inuyasha's embrace. After a while, Inuyasha leaned his head down for capture Kagome's lips in a passionate kiss. When they broke off the kiss, they simply held each other, perfectly content to stay where they were.
Kagome was the first one to break the silence. "What now?"
Inuyasha just shrugged again. "Well, not like we're in any hurry to go anywhere. Besides, we have the rest of eternity to be together."
Kagome made a sound in the back of her throat in agreement. After a few minutes she stood up, a smile plastered on her face. "How about a walk?"
Inuyasha grinned and got up to his feet. "Sounds like a plan to me."
They walked hand in hand through the field of flowers, never once looking back.
The End.
