Chapter 10
Kagome fiddled with his fingers and asked in an uncertain voice, “Inuyasha?”
“Hm?”
“Um, you know that I love you.”
“Keh.”
“And I know that you love me.”
“More than you'll ever know.”
“So where do we go from here?”
ONWARDS!
Inuyasha opened his mouth to reassure the girl he loved, but words failed him. Truth be told, he had absolutely no idea. He was never happier to see Shippo as he was now, when Shippo bounded into the room, jumping into his adopted mother's arms.
As Kagome nuzzled the baby fox demon in greeting, Miroku and Sango wandered into the room with cautious faces.
“So what did Lord Seshoumaru want?” Miroku wanted to know. Before Inuyasha could tell the monk to mind his own business, Kagome answered, “He wanted to relay his father's message.”
Before Miroku could open his mouth to pop out an insensitive question, Sango cocked him on the head with her over sized weapon. Miroku fell to the floor with a loud cry. Rubbing his head, he glared at Sango, “I didn't even touch you!” Sango looked back sheepishly, “Sorry. I thought you were going to grope me.”
Miroku jumped to his feet and stalked out of the room, with Sango on his heels, saying loudly, “I said I was sorry, Monk!”
Shippo looked at Kagome contentedly, “Hey Kagome, when are we leaving?” Kagome looked at Inuyasha who looked at Shippo and replied, “Tomorrow, runt. Now go away. I wanna talk to Kagome.”
Shippo glared at Inuyasha, “I was talking to her first!” Hearing the possessive tone I Shippo's voice, Inuyasha snarled furiously. Kagome might not know, but Inuyasha knew that if demons, even baby demons, started regarding someone as theirs, big trouble could arise. Before Kagome could say anything to appease Shippo, Inuyasha grabbed the child by the scruff of his neck and sped out of the room. It was time for him and Shippo to have a heart to heart talk.
“Put me down! Put me down! Kagomeee!!!” Scuffling under the firm grip, Shippo tried to bite his captive but to no success. Finally when they were far away from the castle, Inuyasha halted in his tracks and lifted the fox demon to his eye level.
“Listen brat, and listen good! Kagome belongs to me! She is going to be my mate and SHE IS MINE! Don't think that since she takes care of you, she has become your possession! She regards you as her pup and you had better maintain you spot because if you ever try to challenge me, not only will I throw you out of the pack, but I will also not allow Kagome to have any contact with you, no matter how she feels about it! I am the Alpha male and she is MY Alpha bitch! You are her pup! Get that into your head!”
Throughout all this, Shippo had gone very still and had started whimpering. The Alpha's power emitting from Inuyasha was making him scared and he wanted Kagome's warm presence. Seeing the effect he had on Shippo, Inuyasha took a deep breath and calmed his demon that was raging at the thought of his pup trying to claim his bitch. Plopping down on the ground, he put Shippo on his lap, and was quiet. Sensing that Inuyasha was trying not to scare him, Shippo peeked at him and saw a tired and weary look on Inuyasha's face.
“Inuyasha?”
Hearing the meek voice of the fox demon, Inuyasha opened his eyes and looked at him. Shippo continued in a small and hesitant voice, “You hate me don't you?” Inuyasha looked shocked. Glancing at the fox child in curiosity he asked, “Why do say that?”
Shippo said in a sad tone, “You just said you'll throw me out of the pack. You've always wanted to throw me out haven't you? If you don't want me around, it's okay. I'll go away. I don't want to come between you and Kagome. I just wanted a family again and Kagome is like my momma and well sometimes when you're nice you're like my dad. I didn't mean to make you. . . . I thought that you were gonna take Kagome away from me. Everytime you make Kagome cry and she goes home, I always think, she's never going to come home and then you go off with Kikyo, and then I think that you'll never come back and then. . . . then . . . .”
Words failed him and he started crying and clung to Inuyasha, “Please don't make me leave! I don't want to go! I promise, I won't ever say anything! I won't even touch Kagome! I'll just stay at a distance! I swear it! You won't even know that I'm there!” At this point he had started becoming hysterical, his little body shaking violently. Inuyasha did the first thing he could think of. He started humming a growl that was meant to soothe pups. How he did it, he had no idea. It was just instinctive.
Shippo started to calm down and slowly his tiny body slumped down as his exhausted mind relaxed and he drifted off to sleep. Finally Inuyasha stopped. He looked down into the innocent face that was leaning against him. He had no idea that Shippo felt that way. The tiny baby face showed signs of weariness and he realized to his shock that the boy was just like him in many ways. Wasn't he the same way towards his mother. Protective, possessive. Because he knew he would never make her cry. Remorse filled him, as he saw that Shippo was just trying to recreate his family again. But having Shippo think that he hated him was painful to even think of. He realized that somewhere deep inside him, he had always regarded Shippo as his pup.
Pulling the boy into his arms, he walked slowly, deep in thought, back to the castle. As he entered the gates, a frantic Kagome raced towards him, “Where have you been? Are you two alright?” Her troubled expression changed into one of amazement, “Is he asleep? He actually fell asleep?” Inuyaha snorted and handed Shippo to Kagome. “What? You don't think I can take care of my pup?” With that he bounded off to find Miroku.
Kagome stared at his retreating back, stunned. He had just called Shippo his pup. A small smile graced her lips. Cuddling Shippo to her bossom, she walked slowly back to the castle. She was not aware of the pair of expressionless amber eyes that followed her very movement thoughtfully. A small frown creased his forehead. Maybe it was time to explain pack rules to Inuyasha.

When Shippo woke up, he could feel himself being jostled. He opened his eyes wearily and rubbed them ad then realized that he was being held by someone who was moving very fast. Looking up he saw Inuyasha's face focused ahead. One look on the focused gaze, and Shippo remembered their crude conversation. Before he could even attempt to wriggle out of the confines of Inuyasha's strong arms, the half demon spoke, “You move pup, and you'll fall.” Shippo immediately went completely still. He had no intention of falling to his death. Then it registered on him what Inuyasha had just called him and he gaped, “What did you call me?”
Inuyasha looked at him for a moment and then said in a simple tone, “I called you my pup.” Shippo shut up then and tried to understand. Was Inuyasha finally accepting him? Did he not hate him? All those questions made him ponder his future with the pack in silence.
Inuyasha looked at the stiff posture of the small body in his hands. Missing Kagome's warm and comforting presence on his back, he sighed internally. They had left at dawn, bidding goodbye to Seshoumaru, not that the demon lord bothered to respond. He had just shot Inuyasha a sharp look and Inuyasha had nodded in return. He had understood what the look was about.
“Shippo. I'm not mad at you. So stop acting all stiff or I'll just drop you.” For emphasis, he loosened his grip making Shippo cry out in protest. “Stop that!”
Adopting a thoughtful look, Inuyasha said, “I don't know,” stretching the last word. Shippo clung to him, yelling for Kagome. Suddenly, Kagome's angry voice penetrated Inuyasha's fun, “Inuyasha stop scaring him!” Inuyasha cringed. Kagome, who had been riding on Kirara with Sango, glared at him. Shippo however, looked at Kagome and called out in a timid voice, “He was just teasing me, Momma!” At his that statement, silence issued as even Inuyasha halted. Kagome looked stunned. Now Kirara was just hovering besides Inuyasha. In an uncertain voice, Kagome spoke, “Did you just call me `momma', Shippo?”
Shippo looked petrified Then bursting into tears, he cried, “I didn't mean to! I'm sorry! Don't be mad!” He tried to jump out of Inuyasha's arms and run of but Kagome caught him. She looked qt him shocked and then her stunned expression changed into one of love and warmth as she hugged the frightened little boy, soothing him.
“It's alright. I don't mind. If you want to call me momma, it's fine with me. You're just like my own little boy.” Shippo smiled and licked her chin which was a sign of an inu's love and acceptance. Kagome didn not know this and just giggled.
Sango `oohed' and `aahed' at the adorable little scene. Miroku just looked on smiling, but Inuyasha just turned his back scorning. In truth, he felt a little lonely and a small warm feeling inside him. He suddenly wished that he had also found someone who had loved him like this when his mother had died. He knew that it was stupid but he could not help it as he felt a twinge of jealousy.
He snorted and said, “Shouldn't we be moving? Kagome, you come with me. I feel more comfortable knowing you're safe. Shippo, if you want, you can ride on my shoulder, you'd better climb on, cuz I ain't waiting much longer. We've got a lot of ground to cover. Let's get moving!”
Swinging Kagome onto his back, he grabbed Shippo and placed him on his shoulder and started to run. Miroku and Sango followed, shooting puzzled glances at the hanyou in front of them.
Unbeknownst to them a pair of malicious dull brown eyes followed the little interchange and darkened with anger. That little bitch! How dare she! The long haired priestess turned around and started walking towards the castle angrily.
A.N: Wait for the next chapter okay.
