Better Days
“Ahhh! I'm like a death magnet or something!!!” Kagome lamented as she dodged trees. She hadn't been planning on this and all she really wanted to do was get home and sleep. It'd been too long since she'd had a proper bath or slept in a comfortable bed. Not to mention that she hadn't been to school in far too long.
And the stupid thing was gaining on her fast.
You see, Kagome had decided that she wanted to go home at the end of the day. Today had been an, overall, good day. Except for the minor mistake she made by letting curiosity get the best of her by wandering around Inuyasha's Forest. She had thought it'd be relatively safe seeing as it was his and usually there weren't any offending Youkai in the area. She hadn't really paid attention to where she was going and before she knew it, it was getting dark out. So she opted to just head straight for the Bone Eater Well. Which didn't turn out to be such a good idea. Especially since she decided to take a short cut back and ran into a bear. And not even any normal bear. Of course it had to be a Youkai Bear. A very pissed-off and hungry Youkai Bear.
The bear had been goring on a deer… or something. She couldn't really tell. It just looked like a hunk of ripped, bloody meat. It had had it's back to her and she had figured that she could just sneak off without it noticing her. Oh, how wrong she had been. It had slowed its movements and stood up on its hind legs before turning to face her.
He had smiled grisly at her, which was more like a malicious bearing of very pointed teeth. “Lets play,” He had said, “I'll give you a head start.”
And now she was on the run. From a demonic bear. The icing on her cake. The chocolate in her cookie. And the frosting on her muffin. Oh, joys, life couldn't get any better than this… And if sarcasm could kill, that stupid Youkai Bear back there would be toast.
But it couldn't… unfortunately.
He had given her less than a five-minute head start to get as far away from him as she possible could before he would begin to pursue her. Which sucked. Because, unfortunately, that wasn't as much of a head start as she thought it was. Mostly because she always seemed to forget that Youkai could run much, much faster than a human. And this particular demon seemed to be insanely fast.
But Kagome decided that this didn't mean that her day was ruined. Just her night. Which was okay, because she'd rather have a good day and a bad night instead of the other way around. And she also decided that it was her own fault that her night was bad, merely because of the fact that she decided that she needed to wander around Inuyasha's Forest unprotected. It really wasn't the smartest thing that she'd ever done. And trying to be downright optimistic in the face of death isn't as easy as it sounds… Nonetheless, her reckless mistake led to this moment, to where she was now. Dodging trees and jumping brush and hoping to KAMI that she doesn't trip and fall flat on her face because, somehow, she knew for a fact that if that happened she'd be caught. She'd be dead.
Not to mention that her backpack was long ago discarded when the chase first began. Dimly, she wondered if she'd be able to find the stupid bag if she survived this. After all, she did have some pretty important stuff in there.
She could hear the Youkai crashing through the trees behind her. The sound of splintering wood and crunching was catching up with her much too quickly for her taste. She needed to figure out how to protect herself. How to get some help. And fast. This Bear Youkai certainly wasn't going to wait until she had someone to help her kill it.
For a moment, Kagome mused about stopping the Youkai dead in his tracks by forming a T with her hands and yelling “TIME OUT!” Then sitting down and patting the ground next to her, “I need a breather.”
Then the tree line broke and she could see the village. She took in as deep of a breath as she could manage and screamed for all she was worth, “INUYASHA!”
Nothing happened. She panicked and simply screamed. The Youkai was on her. He grabbed her by the back of her shirt and pulled, effectively throwing her behind him. In fact, it seemed almost as if he hadn't meant to throw her so far. She had been about seven yards away from the edge of the forest… now she was two. Two feet away from the tree line.
Then she struggled to her feet only to tumble back down to the ground in a desperate attempt to avoid a huge clawed hand that was precariously close to hitting her in the face. With the force behind that, she was fairly certain that it would've knocked the head off her shoulders.
She screamed again, as loud as she possibly could.
Then came the sound almost like wind. The sighing of cloth. The flash of red. The glint of a blade. It happened so fast that she wasn't sure if it'd happened at all. But the very dead Bear Youkai at his feet and his bloody sword and hands made it apparent that it'd happened. It'd been real. She was shaking with the after affects of her adrenaline rush. Soon, she'd been too tired to function at all. She struggled to her feet and looked over at him. He'd saved her life… again.
He turned to her then, head slightly tilted to the side and the dead Youkai's blood smeared across his face. He wiped the blade on the side of the Bear Youkai and sheathed it before walking over to her. Blood was almost artistically splattered on his hands and across his face and neck, little spots of blood marring his white hair here and there. Gold eyes softly glowing in the moonlight as he fixed her with a steady stare.
He was beautiful and scary. But she was too tired and shaken to appreciate the look he was giving her… maybe that was the problem with their relationship. Maybe they tried to show affection for each other at the wrong moments. Maybe their timing is simply horrible.
“My bag is… there still…” She motioned to his forest.
He simply nodded and grabbed her hand, leading her to the Bone Eater Well. He'd go and get it for her once he saw her safe. They silently jumped through the well. He got her to her house and she bathed and went to bed. And he tucked her in like his mother used to do for him, though she had already fallen to sleep, and then he headed back out and got her bag for her. Her atrocious, bright yellow bag. He left it at the foot of her bed as she slept and dreamt of better days.
