Between Darkness and Light
Chapter 19: When the Sun Sets…
By Cataluna
Inuyasha knew the exact moment when she had fallen… the arm around his waist had gradually loosened as her mind became suspended and her body began to rejuvenate itself. He held his breath to still the muscles on his lap before moving carefully to put a pillow in their place.
A soft whimper sounded with immediate displeasure at the lose of his warmth -- and for a brief moment, she seemed dead set on regaining it, her hand reaching and seeking desperately in his direction -- before she finally resettled, barreling the side of her face to the pillow. Relief mixed with a bit of arrogance made apparent on his smile as she continued to be fast asleep, obviously still worn-out from their earlier "activities."
He needed to reach Miroku, but his cell phone was missing and he had forgotten the bouzo's number. The cabin was nearly torn apart in his search for it. Finally, he decided to try the redial button on the main phone, praying that Miroku was the last person Kagome had called.
Inuyasha never thought he would be so glad to hear that bastard's voice, though for some strange reason, Miroku sounded even more annoyingly cheerful and spirited than usual as soon as he'd realized who he was speaking with. Everything Inuyasha said was retorted with a mischief-tainted response that probably held some kind of sick innuendo. He didn't have time for that, and for once, chose to ignore his blabbering instead of losing his temper.
The call ended with Miroku promising to arrive with Sango as quickly as possible. `Just a little longer…' Inuyasha repeated to himself as he paced aimlessly around the perimeter of the living room, before allowing his feet to lead him back inside the bedroom. He picked up his shirt from the foot of the bed and fitted his arms inside the sleeves as he stationed himself by the window next to their bed.
The sun was particularly blinding today, but still glorious nonetheless, despite how he had to squint hard to peer through the blinds. `At least I don't have to worry about bursting into flames,' he gladly reminded himself as he finished buttoning up his shirt. His ears caught the sound of engine running and tires rolling across pebbles from less than a mile away, and his hands tensed on the last button, until simple logic bluntly reminded him that vampires didn't particularly like traveling outside during the day.
At the sight of Miroku's car coming up the path, he turned away from the window and kneeled next to the bed, forearms resting lightly on the mattress. "I'll be back soon," Inuyasha whispered, letting the back of one hand skim across the side of her face, his knuckles lingering on her chin. "Until then, Kagome… sleep."
She sighed softly in subconscious comprehension and was rewarded with a gentle press to her lips.
~*~*~*~
Miroku shut down the engine and took the key out of the ignition. Right now, he wanted to bang his head against the steering wheel over and over again for agreeing to this. In front of them stood an old building in the deserted part of the city, completely abandoned and a perfect nest for all sort of evil monsters. A heavy sigh whooshed out from his lungs; he unclasped his seat belt and tucked his key safely inside his pocket, before turning to the hanyou by his side. "Don't you think that coming back here now is a bit soon? Maybe you should wait a couple more days until you're back to 100 percent."
Inuyasha responded with a snort that sounded even more arrogant than usual, his knuckles cracking as he flexed his fingers. "I am perfectly fine," he replied confidently, then swung open the passenger-side door, inviting a breath of fresh air into the interior of Miroku's car. "I owe that wimp-ass bastard a visit."
Miroku reluctantly stepped out and followed him to the back of the car. He popped open the trunk to reveal an assortment of weapons Inuyasha had rudely requested for him to bring. At the bright glimmering of their sharp edges, he reminded himself that this was a mistake. "You know, we're basically walking into the lion's den. Just because it's daylight doesn't mean they can't fight inside the building. This time there may not be a giant ball of energy to save your ass and-"
"This time I'm prepared, and I will not be distracted," Inuyasha interrupted as he randomly selected one of the handles that was sticking out from the pile, nodding with approval at the double-bladed ax attached to the other end. It was one of his favorite, a rare weapon he had picked up on a trip to India, but seldom used.
Inuyasha made several practice swings. The handle was easy to grip and its weight was almost unnoticeable; it would serve as an extension of his arm instead of an object he was holding. Careful not to cut himself, he ran his thumb down the side of each blade, checking for its sharpness. He frowned when he noticed that Miroku was just standing there, doing nothing. "Arm yourself. I didn't ask you here for a lecture.
Miroku sighed and grabbed a small crossbow along with several stakes from a large canvass bag. "I don't know why I let you talk me into doing things like this. I am a scholar, not a fighter."
"And I don't know why you're always playing that bull-shit scholar card. You were a good fighter and you still are."
"You know that I can't go back to that life anymore, Inuyasha. I can help you and go patrolling with you sometimes… but I'm not going to do this for fun or vengeance," he finally responded only to find that Inuyasha had stopped listening and was already prowling around the outside of the building, searching for a discreet entrance.
A bit annoyed, Miroku slammed the trunk shut and closed his eyes in a silent prayer for patience before following. Since meeting Kagome, Inuyasha seemed to have forgotten just how much fighting had cost him. Speaking of the slayer, he caught up with Inuyasha, "Won't Kagome be worried when she wakes up?"
Startled by his question, Inuyasha paused in the midst of testing out the strength of the iron bars in front of one window. The metal molded into the imprint of his hand as he forced out his answer through clenched teeth, "She won't."
"You planted a suggestion," Miroku said as more of a statement than a question, disappointed. "I thought you said you'll never do something that-"
Inuyasha whipped around in a blur of silver, eyes flashing and lips pulling back into an angry snarl. "I had to," he spat, his nostrils flaring as he inhaled repeatedly to calm his anger. "And will you just shut the fuck up already? You want everyone to know we're here?" It was true that he had planted a suggestion in her mind, and he was feeling guilty enough about it, even though it was for her own good.
Everything he did, every action he took was for her and to protect their future. She wouldn't have allowed him back here, and if she did, she would have insisted on coming along with him. Kagome was a great fighter, and had made huge improvement since he had first met her, but she was his liability. He couldn't fight Kouga properly when he had to worry about her. "Now help me find a way in."
They circled around the building a couple more times. Everything seemed to be blocked up with either wooden boards or was wire meshed; there was no way they could get in there quietly. Last time he was here, he wasn't exactly in his right state of mind and had entered through the front entrance, announcing his arrival by immediately killing two of the watch. He smiled; they were quite a bunch of screamers.
Inuyasha's smile faded as they passed by the same tree for the third time. One thing he was not good at was being patient, especially when his pride was at stake. He felt that he had waited long enough to fight Kouga again, despite the fact that he was unconscious for the larger part of it. There was no way in hell that he was letting the wimp think that he was too chicken to come back.
"Oh fuck it."
Surprise or not, they were getting in. He didn't even bother asking for Miroku's opinion before landing two swift kicks to the center of one of the boards. It splintered, and he broke through what was left with his arm for an easier entry. Shrugging off Miroku's cursing at his rashness, he thoroughly swept the dark opening for hidden guards. "Get ready," Inuyasha called out to his friend before leaping inside, landing lightly in a squat with one hand on the ground for balance on what was left of the wooden barricade.
He rose to his feet quickly to move out of Miroku's way, but nearly keeled over when his nose finally detected the nauseating scent that was swarming in this room. "The hell!" He shook his head violently as if to clear his nose of the smell, finding it to be useless.
Miroku jumped in after him; his cursing and complaining came to a sudden halt when he too caught a whiff of the powerful odor, and immediately lifting his sleeves to cover his nose. "Shit! What the fuck is that?"
"Vampire blood," he replied grimly. It was a smell that no one could forget, especially in such large quantity. He crossed the room and opened the door, "Let's go."
Inuyasha held his breath and moved swiftly, looking back every so often to make certain that his friend was still behind him. Room after room and hallway after hallway, the ambush he had been expecting and practically craving for never came. The place stood silent except for the echoing of their own footsteps. It was either desertion or total annihilation.
Their question was answered near the top floor where Kagome was held. Bodies were littered all around; some were in chopped pieces while others had began a rapid stage of decay, leaving their eyes sunken and their bones bared with melted flesh forming puddles around them. Instead of rejoicing, Inuyasha became more alert than ever, wondering who was powerful enough to do such a thing.
Inuyasha tore his gaze off the floor to focus on the last room at the end of the hall; the grip on his ax tightened, his nose twitching uncontrollably. The horrid stench of vampire blood surrounded him, and for the first time, he hesitated in taking another step forward.
The door knob turned easily under his hand, but a sharp click from behind prompted him to halt and glance over his shoulder. Miroku looked up from the crossbow he was preparing in his hand and nodded for him to continue, his jaw also set firm in anticipation.
Inuyasha opened the door carefully, and grimaced at the sight before him, his determined steps faltering into a complete stop.
Whoever did this was sick, insanely sick. The rage that was left behind was unavoidable; its tendril quickly sipping up his nostrils like poison. He closed his mouth and swallowed his surprise. And the blood… the blood was everywhere. He could hear Miroku giving in by the corner of the room, the sound of liquid hitting hard floor and splashing against the liquid that was already there. Kouga was hung naked on the wall directly in front of him, crucified with his legs and arms spread like a cross and wooden stakes holding each limb in place.
It was a practice that was designed to produce a slow death with maximum pain and suffering. If Kouga was human, he would have suffered from slow suffocation. The weight of his body, pulling down on outstretched arms and shoulders, would keep the chest area in an inhalation state, making exhalation impossible. It was also one of the cleanest methods, though this was obviously not what that person had in mind. Each visible cut on his body was oozing green, poisoned to prevent proper healing. He or she was after pain, not death.
Blood was dripping freely from Kouga's groin -- or the lack of it -- making the ground in front of him wet and slippery. Inuyasha nearly winced in sympathy for the vampire before remembering his true purpose for being here. Revenge. Fighting against the churning in his stomach that Miroku had succumbed to, he crossed the room swiftly and was in front of his current focus of hatred in four large steps.
His nose twitched as it caught the scent of something that smelled vaguely familiar -- the smell of lavender and earth. `A woman. All this because of a woman…' he concluded with an unbelieving snort that caused the unconscious vampire to stir slightly. "Wake up Kouga," Inuyasha demanded with a growl.
Kouga's eyes opened slowly, and with strenuous effort, lifted his chin from his chest. A spark of hope flickered in his dull eyes when he finally realized who he was, and what he had probably came here to do. "K-kill me…" Kouga cried out hoarsely, head dropping down in shame. It must have taken everything left in him to say that, to plead for a "lowly hanyou" to end his life.
"Gladly," he twisted the stake that was holding up Kouga's left arm, smiling in dark satisfaction when his head slammed back against the wall, and an agonizing scream sounded from his throat. "You shouldn't have fucking messed with what was mine," he hissed lowly into his ear and whipped out a stake from his jacket, plunging it hard into Kouga's thigh, careful to avoid hitting the femur. Kouga's eyes widened and his mouth opened dumbly; this time the bastard couldn't even scream.
"Stop it Inuyasha."
"Stay out of this Miroku," he commanded, cold eyes casting back over his shoulder briefly to ensure that Miroku wasn't foolish enough to stop him. "This is none of your business… and since someone has already beaten me to this, I get to make him scream just a little more." He waited for Miroku to interject further but was glad to hear only silence.
Refocusing on the matters at hand, Inuyasha removed the stake from Kouga's thigh slowly and sunk it back inside once again, delighting in the sound of flesh ripping. "How does it feel, Kouga? How does it feel to know that you'll never experience the feel of her body withering beneath yours and even if she's willing to go with you," voice filled with absolute menace, he smiled cruelly and let his steady gaze drift to the nailed appendage beside Kouga head, "You'll have nothing to-"
"Inuyasha! That's enough; we're wasting our time here."
This time it looked like Miroku looked disgusted enough to step in. There was a time when he would have stood right beside him, helping with the interrogation. `But ever since…' With a heavy sigh, he released his hold on the stake and took a small step backward. He didn't feel like getting into a fight over this with his friend. "Tell me who did this." He still needed to know if there was a new evil in town, someone who might be even more ruthless than Naraku.
Kouga shook his head limply; opening and closing his mouth in an indecisive manner before letting it stay shut. "I-I can't…"
Inuyasha fist ran straight through the wall, and plaster fell like snow to the floor. It would be a waste of time to continue asking. Whoever did this was obviously powerful enough to influence his decision even near-death. He pulled his fist back and turned around, gesturing for Miroku to follow as he walked away.
Surprised by his action, "You're not going to kill him?"
Inuyasha dusted the plaster from his sleeve. "He deserves to suffer." Right now his priority lied in finding Naraku and getting the jewel. Whoever this person was did him a favor, and if she happened to be a new threat, they would take care of it. What needed to be taken care of was done; his only regret was that Kouga had no more blood for him to bleed.
~*~*~*~
"Uh huh," she twisted the cord around in an idle manner, letting it spiral tight around the length of her index finger. She was acutely aware of a pair of golden eyes watching her intently from the entrance to the kitchen, his back against the doorway and his arms folded across his chest, listening to her every word.
She purposely turned her back on him and lowered her volume, not caring that it was a futile effort against his hearing. She was still a little annoyed at him for not telling her where he and Miroku had gone while she was asleep. All she knew was that he had came back looking a little less pissed than usual.
After a few more "yea" and "uh huh," she ended the phone call with a "love you too, can't wait to see you" and carefully hanged the phone back on its receiver.
Smiling and humming slightly to herself, she moved in front of the sink to refill her glass with water, nearly dropping the glass when she felt strong arms snake around her waist and hot breath grazing the fine hair on her neck. She had almost forgotten he was there, though now he was clearly making his presence known.
"What was that all about?" he nuzzled her neck, strands of silver falling over her shoulder to mix with her own. He continued as her hands covered his own, pulling him in closer, and her head dropped comfortably back on his shoulder with a soft sigh, "Who got you so happy?"
"Well…" Her eyes gleamed brightly as an idea formed in her mind - a splendid way for her to get back at him for keeping things from her. She uncovered his hands and turned around, looping her slender arms around his neck. His eyes half-closed as her fingers massaged his scalp and tangled themselves in his mane. She stood on tiptoes to match his height and barely kissed him at the very corner of his mouth. "A friend," she whispered. "A male friend," she added on a sly note, letting her lips wickedly brushed against his with each word.
His hold on her tightened immensely, gentle grip becoming iron shackles, and she could feel their bodies vibrating from a deep growl in his throat. Leaning forward, his eyes turning cold from restrained anger, "He won't be for long,"
Kagome jumped and yelped simultaneously, startled by a painful nip at the end of her nose. Eyes watering and her hand pawing protectively over her nose, she managed a stern glare at the hanyou. "You jerk! Why did you do that for?"
He ignored her question, for his lips had already began to occupy themselves on her the line of her neck; the tip of his tongue tracing a wet circle in a domineering manner at the dark bruise he had created this morning.
Realization hit her forcefully. She swallowed and forced her eyes to flutter open, ignoring the sudden rush of heat that was growing hotter in her stomach. "Inuyasha… you would kill him?"
Annoyed, Inuyasha clamped down hard on his mark at her continued questioning, his tongue gently flickering at the tender skin his teeth held in between, before releasing her. "In a heartbeat," he growled darkly, and she reacted with an involuntary tremble, strangely excited by the thought. "You're mine, Kagome, and will always be mine… ever since I first lay eyes on you. I will kill anyone who tries to come between us."
`Kill?' Kagome looked up at him with widening eyes at his declaration, and her heels dropped weakly to the floor. He stared wordlessly back at her; his height added to the intimidating glint in his eyes. `He's completely serious about this, and I was just kidding.' she realized, but at the same time knew she shouldn't be at all surprised by his jealous nature since he had gotten mad enough just from seeing her dance with Hojo.
He frightened her; the reddish glint in his eyes reminded her of this morning when for a split second, she didn't even recognize the man laying on top of her. Love had made her eager to pass it off as a moment of insanity, but now she was afraid that these moments would start to become more frequent. Was this brought on by his injury or from their lovemaking? Perhaps it was too soon… perhaps they should have waited-
`No!'
Without realizing what she was doing, she was once again on her tiptoes, her hands squeezing his arms as she bit hard on his throat, startling Inuyasha and causing him to growl softly in approval. The sudden vibration from his throat caused her to release him immediately, and her cheeks darkened in mortification.
Bewildered, she absently traced her teeth with her tongue while staring at the prominent bite mark. `Why did I do that?' Her hand moved from the back of his neck to touch the reddening mark in an apologetic manner. "I'm sorry Inuyasha. I didn't mean to do that… And it wasn't even a boy, it was my mom," she confessed as she peered cautiously up at him and was pleased to see that his eyes were once again the color of pure gold, and a tiny smile was very much evident on his face.
Holding her hand in place against his neck, Inuyasha released a quiet chuckle and tenderly moved his cheek once, twice against her own, before drawing back to look at her. "Your mom?" he repeated.
Kagome nodded, dumbfounded by the fact that he didn't seem to remember what he was doing and what he was saying. He was like two different people. She would have to ask Kaede or Miroku about his weird mood swing at first chance. Pushing her worries aside, she smiled brightly, "Mama's feeling a lot better now, being away from Tokyo really helped. She's coming home this Saturday, Inuyasha. I want you to meet her, and she wants to meet you too."
"Meet her? Meet me?" he stammered, his brows furrowed in absolute confusion.
"Yea, don't you want to-?"
"Of course I do," Inuyasha assured her quickly to prevent any possible misunderstanding. Seeing that her mouth was opening to give further questioning, he dipped his head down to silence her with a passionate kiss that left her lids heavy, and both of them gasping for air.
Breaking off their kiss, he rubbed the back of his head and smiled in an awkward manner as she attempted to calm her thudding heart. "What if she doesn't like me?"
`This coming from a guy who would prefer to walk around the house naked,' she mused. "Well I told her about you, and gods know why, she really wants to meet you.
Inuyasha relaxed noticeably, his jaws no longer clenched tight with tension. "Oh yea? What did you say to her?"
"I told her that you are rude, have a bad temper and a potty-mouth. And not very good looking."
He laughed loudly and grabbed her hips, pulling her tight against him. "Liar," he scolded, his palm connecting soundly with the flesh of her rear.
"Inuyasha!"
A smirk played at the corner of his lips, "Kagome, Kagome... ," he taunted with each shake of his head, "I thought I've told you that all liars need a good spankin'"
She squealed and moved away quickly before he could "spank" her again.
Still laughing, he picked her up and spun her around, before pulling her back towards him for another kiss. Her eyes fluttered shut as his lips neared hers, and her hands clenched and unclenched his shoulders. `Gods, I love him…'
"Hey will you guys knock it off. We just had dinner you know?"
They groaned simultaneously at Miroku's untimely interruption. Inuyasha placed her carefully back on her feet and turned to glare at the source of his annoyance. "Shut your face Miroku and go hit on Sango or something."
"I was," Miroku mumbled to the floor and pointed to the telltale handprint on his cheek.
Kagome shook her head in disappointment, still unable to understand Miroku's reasons for his action. From what she could tell, he really did like Sango and vice versa. His violet eyes never seemed to stray far from the exterminator, then neither did his infamous hands. Old habits died hard; he might have slept with many women, but he still did not know the way to a girl's heart. "Miroku, you really need to realize that Sango is different. You should treat her differently."
"Different?" he repeated slowly, treating it like it was a foreign word.
"You know…" She picked at her nails, wondering how she could possibly explain such a simple concept to him without calling him an idiot or a pervert.
Inuyasha filled in the rest for her, "Let me put it into simple terms that even you should understand: less molesting and more talking, bouzo."
"But I-"
"And I pray to gods that you're not hitting on other girls right in front of her face. No girl, no matter how secure, likes that," Kagome added.
Miroku smiled sheepishly. "Thank you Kagome, I will be eternally grateful for your advice," he reached out to hug her but the sound of a dangerous growl coming from Inuyasha's throat caused him to freeze. One large handprint on his face was enough, he didn't need black eyes and a broken nose too; he decided to shake her hand instead.
They stood there in silence for a while, until Inuyasha lost his patience. "What do you want, bastard? If there's nothing, you should leave."
"Inuyasha, I'm hurt that you want me to leave so soon," Miroku replied with his hand placed mockingly over his heart.
"I had to see your ugly face for practically the entire day. Now why don't you get the fuck out of my apartment and take Sango with you. We'll meet you tonight at around nine."
~*~*~*~
Kagome smiled as she quietly observed the pair walking in front of her. Miroku seemed to be taking her advice to the heart and hadn't flirted or groped a single girl for the entire night. His good behavior was strangely distracting, causing the normally calm Sango to be more jumpy than usual, even going as far as deliberately giving him the chance to grope her on several occasions. Despite the temptations, his hands had remained firmly by his sides.
Even more distracting were the girls in tiny dresses who seemed to be everywhere tonight. Kagome sighed in exasperation and glanced down at her own outfit, which consisted of a sleek leather jacket and a sparkling red top. The outfit was nice and very practical - helping her blend in and allowing for wide movements without the risk of her boobs popping out of place - but was definitely not what she would considered to be sexy.
Rather than taking her place along side of Inuyasha, she was forced to walk at the rear of the group because of a stupid promise that she and Inuyasha had made to each other before leaving -- while patrolling, they would give no sign of involvement that went beyond friendship. It was logical. It was professional. It…
Sucked.
She folded her arms across her chest and held back the growl in her throat when another girl deliberately brushed against her boyfriend while passing by. `Get away from my man!' she wanted to scream, but kept quiet, though her eyes spoke in angry volume when the girl passed her by. At least Inuyasha knew better than to pay any heed to their blatant flirtation, and was treating them like roaches. `I just wish that we don't have to hide this, then-'
"Kagome…"
Her name, carried softly by the light evening breeze, reached her ears, prompting her to turn around in expectation. When she saw that no one was there, she stopped completely, eyes squinting to search the crowd for a familiar face. There were none, only random passersby. She faced the front again to find everyone had stopped and was watching her intently.
Sango was the first to speak, her head tilted slightly in concern for her new friend, "Kagome-chan, are you alright?"
"Yea," she replied quickly while her head turned to glance over her shoulder again. "I just… I just thought that I heard something," confusion caused her to stammer awkwardly as her mind tried to think of words that would describe the eerie-sounding voice she had just heard, a voice she could not dismiss and a voice that was strangely familiar. She ran her fingers through the length of her ponytail, lightly grabbing at the tip before letting go, her ears trained for the faintest repetition of her name. "Did you guys hear anything…?"
They all paused briefly, all trying hard to listen for the phantom voice, but even Inuyasha had to shake his head. "Sometimes the wind can play tricks with your mind," he explained. Seeing the uncertainty that was still clear on her face, he took a small step towards her, hand reaching out awkwardly to comfort, but drew back into a fist when he remembered their promise. Her heart warmed at his concern, and she wished that he was able to hold her too.
"What exactly did you hear?"
"My name."
"I'm sure it's just the wind, Kagome," Miroku supplied eagerly, wanting to calm her agitation. "Or nerves from being out of action."
Kagome nodded and managed a bright smile while continuing her discreet search for the source. She could have sworn that she had heard something, but they were probably right. `I guess it really is just the wind…' Her face wore a sheepish grin that emphasized her embarrassment, "I'm sorry for making a big deal about this, guys," she apologized, wishing that she could be as calm and steady as the rest of them. She might be the slayer, but in comparison, she lacked the experience. "I didn't mean to-" the smile dropped from her face as a familiar pulse began to snake down her back.
Spotting the sudden frown on her face and the resting of hand on her lower back, Inuyasha caught her eyes, and mouthed, "Are you alright?"
Gesturing an "okay" with her hand, she answered with a small pant, "I'll be fine. Just give me a second." The pain wasn't as intense as it had been at the beginning, but it did make her stumble a little. Kaede had said that she just needed to get used to her new senses, then it would be about as painful as a static shock. Eyes sliding shut, she drew in a deep breath and released it, slowly relaxing each of her muscles while searching for the source of her discomfort.
"She has the ability to sense vampires," Miroku filled in for Sango.
"Oh yes, I've heard of it, but I never knew that it can be painful."
Her eyes reopened to the concerned stares of her friends, "It's only painful when there are a lot of them." She stole a quick glance at Inuyasha, who looked just about ready to run over and hug her, then pointed in the opposite direction. "It's coming from over there."
Her senses led them to the park, where a group of high school kids had unfortunately decided to throw a party.
The vampires were everywhere, feeding and killing, no longer bothering to be discreet. Some were so disgustingly drunk on blood that they could barely move, couldn't even raise a hand to defend themselves when she drove her stake straight through their heats. Others were merely playing a game of cat and mouse with their victims, biting them shallowly then letting them run before recapturing them again. It was sickening; the old her probably would throw up at the sight.
She heard a scream from behind her and sighed. It was going to be a long night.
